Standard question 1
Minimum number of wins needed to qualify for the next round? Logic : Allow the top 3 seeded teams to win as many matches as possible. Of the remaining 5 teams, find the mean of their number of wins. Top 3 teams : 7,6,5 games respectively Last 5 teams : (4+3+2+1+0)/5= 2 games each
Standard question 2
Minimum number of wins needed to guarantee qualification for the next round? Logic : here, take the mean of the 5 best teams. (7+6+5+4+3)/5=5. So, there can be 5 teams with 5 wins each and one may have to sit out. Hence the minimum needed to guarantee a place in knock out would be 6!!
Minimum number of matches a team must win in order to have a chance of qualifying?
If top x teams are to qualify for the next round, we would take top x-1 teams and try to make them win as many matches as possible. The objective is to maximise the top teams and minimise the weaker teams. Second step would be to distribute the remaining points equally/as equal as possible. So, here make the first team win all 7 matches. Remaining matches are 21 to be divided into 7 teams, so 3 wins each. A7, B3, C3, D3, E3, F3, G3, H3. Now any of the teams from B-H has an equal chance of qualifying for the next round.
Standard Question 1
Total number of matches?? 64+32+16+8+4+2+1 = 127 Trick: In a knock out tournament, the total number of matches to find the winner would be always number of players -1. So, 128-1= 127
Standard Question 2
Who will play match 3 and match 45 in Round 1? 1-128, .., 3-126, ..45-84, 64-65 Trick : The sum of the seeds in the round would always be of the nature 2^n+1( if the total number of players are 2^n, which will generally be the case)
Standard Questions 3
Who will play seed 35 in the Round 2 if there has been no upsets? Round 2: 64 players, the players sum = 65 Therefore: 65-35 = 30. Seed number 30 and 35 would play the game together in Round 2.
Standard Question 4
Who will meet seed 68 in QF, if seed 5 lost in the Pre QF and there were no other upsets? Seed 68 is in QF, therefore he has defeated seed 61 in R1. 61 would have played 4 in Round2. Now 68 plays against 4 and defeats him as well. QF opponent for 4(68 would be playing with him) is 9-4=5. 5, though, had an upset in QF where his opponent was 12. So, 68 plays against 12 in the QF.
The Chessboard
Number of a*b squares on a chessboard = (9-a)^2 Number of squares = 1^2+2^2+..8^2= 204 Total Number of rectangles = n^3 upto 8 = 1296 Therefore, pure rectangles = ??
Coin/Stick Games
