Linguistic tasks the student can complete upon completion of this level
Pronounce most letters properly, with frequent difficulty in pronouncing the guttural letters. Exchange greeting using very common expressions such as "good morning," "welcome," "please," etc. Use basic verbs in the first person: I want, I go, I ate - in the present or past tense, with mistakes. Provide questions and answers about basic information such as time, place, number etc., or personal data such as name, age and nationality (necessary information when traveling or shopping). Introduce oneself with greater details. Discuss hobbies, relationships with family members, etc. Enter a dialogue regarding daily life on the level of discussing activities in which they partake, family and work, while utilizing verb tenses with greater competence. Function living in an Arabic speaking country, being able to make an appointment over the phone or provide a succinct idea about a topic in which he/she is not specialized, while still requiring assistance in performing some tasks, such as filling out forms etc. Extract basic information from reading a newspaper or listening to the news, though they may be accompanied by pictures, such as: a plane exploded, 10 people died, etc. Provide a simple place description. Write a coherent personal or short official letter. Participate actively in daily social interactions, though with limited participation in unfamiliar official or social situations. Have a general understanding of the main ideas in subject-specific materials that are heard or read such as the sciences, economics and politics. Prepare a written or oral address regarding a subject of importance to the language learner. In this presentation he/she delves into the details of the subject, such as a literary analysis or a theoretical discussion of his/her field of specialization. Utilize varied vocabulary to communicate the meaning. Pronounce words properly. Connect sentences and ideas in paragraphs. Recognize the writer's intentions, and draw conclusions by reading between the lines. Comprehend a large number of vocabulary words, synonyms, antonyms, colocations and connectors, and use some of them in appropriate contexts. Delve into details and produce written speeches of a narrative and descriptive nature.

Hold deep conversations on a variety of topics, make reasoned arguments, cite evidence and give advice and criticism. Express feelings and opinions in an eloquent and detailed manner. Produce an oral or written speech on detailed topics that are of wide relevance, such as geography and the sciences. Utilize a rich linguistic and cultural knowledge base in order to understand artistic and intellectual works the implications of which are deeply rooted within the Arab Identity. Give lectures on a wide variety of topics under difficult circumstances, while speaking fluently without stumbling. Produce sophisticated reports and research papers. Employ a thorough cultural knowledge base so as to understand and produce social criticism and veiled sarcasm. Carry out tasks that require the utmost linguistic accuracy.

Classical Arabic Level Six

Level Seven & above

Level six is roughly comparable to levels B2 or UNIcert II (according to the European language reference standard ) or ACTFL Advanced Mid /ILR 2+ (according to the American language reference standard). More advanced courses in Classical Arabic can be custom tailored to the needs of advanced students.

Colloquial Arabic (Dialect) Levels 1 & 2

This course is intended to build proficiency in the dialect of the Levant. Levantine Dialect encompasses Syrian, Lebanese, Palestinian and Jordanian dialects, all of which are touched on in the course for the purposes of building content comprehension of a range of speakers. However the course is taught with a strong emphasis on Syrian Dialect in specific to provide the student a natural and coherent individual dialect when speaking. Course method includes listening comprehension, differentiation between the grammars of Dialect and Classical Arabic, conversation strategies (linguistic and cultural), and vocabulary building. A structured Dialect text book is employed for reference regarding dialect grammar and vocabulary taken as well. The course assumes knowledge of Arabic script and Modern Standard Arabic grammatical structure. It is designed to enable students to communicate actively and appropriately on a wide range of topics. Prerequisite: equivalent of Classcal Arabic Level Three (as outlined above).
