INTRODUCTION
The hot water and steam coil accessories provide draw-thru heat sources for OMNIZONE 50BR,BZ 5 ton to 12 ton packaged units. The coils are mounted directly in the return air and front of the cooling coil internal to the unit. This heating coil accessory is not recommended for units with the 100% rear return option, use a field-fabricated coil for this option. The coils on the OMNIZONE 50BR,BZ 15 and 20 ton mount internal but mount on the discharge side of the cooling coil. They may be used with any return or discharge arrangement. The 50BY coils mount external to the unit where the filter track is attached on the unit return air connection. See Table 1 for accessory kit weight and contents.

PRE-INSTALLATION Complete Pre-Installation Checks Remove accessory packaging and inspect shipment for damage. File claim with shipping company if accessory is damaged or incomplete.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Installing, starting up, and servicing air-conditioning equipment can be hazardous due to system pressures, electrical components, and equipment location. Only trained, qualified installers and service mechanics should install, start-up, and service this equipment. When working on the equipment, observe precautions in the literature and on tags, stickers, and labels attached to the equipment. Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses and work gloves. Keep quenching cloth and fire extinguisher nearby when brazing. Use care in handling, rigging, and setting bulky equipment. ELECTRIC SHOCK HAZARD To avoid the possibility of electrical shock, open and tag all disconnects before installing this equipment.

Check Unit Clearance Provide sufficient space for

airflow clearance and servicing accessory after it is mounted in unit. The base unit minimum clearances for front, sides and rear of unit also apply to the hot water and steam coils. Coils on the 50BY units and on 50BR,BZ016 and 024 may need to be installed before the unit is moved into final position. Check job clearances and install coils before final placement if necessary.

INSTALLATION Installation of Steam or Hot Water Coils on 50BR,BZ006-014 (See Fig. 1-4)
1. Remove return air grille, filters and small panel above the grilles from the front of the unit. 2. Mark locations of steam or hot water piping penetrations on cabinet per dimension on drawings (Fig. 1,2,3 or 4). Use hole saw or similar to cut two holes for piping penetrations through right side panel of unit. Holes should be 1/2 in. larger than pipe size in diameter. Remove or file burrs from edges of holes.

PIPING RECOMMENDATIONS Water Coils Refer to Fig. 10.

1. Piping should be in accordance with accepted industry standards and all components rated for the system pressure expected. 2. Coils should be piped such that they will drain and a drain and vent provided. 3. Always connect the supply to the bottom of the coil on the air leaving side. Connect the return to the top on the air entering side. 4. Water coils should not be subjected to entering air temperatures below 38 F to prevent coil freeze up. If temperatures over the coil are below this, Glycol or brine solution should be used. Use a solution with the lowest concentration, which meet the coldest air expected. Excess concentration will greatly reduce coil capacity. 5. The return air duct system should be carefully designed to get adequate mixing of the return air and outdoor air streams to prevent cold spots on the coil that could freeze. 6. Two position control valves, modulating control valves or three way control valves may be used to control water flow. Select the valve based on the control valve manufacturers recommendations for size and temperature rating. Select the control valve CV based on pressure drop equal to the coil. 7. Pipe sizes should be selected on the head pressure available from the pump. It is recommended that the velocity not exceed 8 ft per second and that the piping system be designed for approximately a 3-ft of loss per 100 equivalent ft of pipe. 8. Design the piping system to allow for expansion and to minimize vibration between the unit and piping system.

2. Do not reduce the pipe size on the coil return connection. Keep the same size through the dirt loop and make any reduction in the branch to the trap. 3. A vacuum breaker is recommended to prevent condensate from being held up in the coil. Generally the vacuum break is connected between the coil inlet and the return main. If the system has a flooded return main the vacuum breaker should be open to atmosphere and the trap design should allow for venting large quantities of air. 4. Do not let steam flow drip through the coil and do not attempt to have condensate lift when using a two-position or modulating valve. 5. Size traps in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Be sure that the required pressure differential is available. Do not undersize traps. 6. Float and thermostatic or bucket traps are recommended for low pressure steam. On high pressure use bucket traps. Thermostatic traps should only be used for air venting. Bucket traps are recommended for use with ON/OFF control. 7. Locate the trap at least 12 inches below the coil return. 8. If a modulating control valve is used be sure to size the valve properly and do not oversize.

CONTROLS
Several methods of control are possible depending on the heating medium to be used, location and type of thermostatic control and whether or not modulating or ON-OFF type control is used. Figure 13 shows a typical control scheme for ON/OFF hot water heating coil in a 50B series unit. Install heating thermostat or connect to the heating side of an available heating/cooling thermostat so that the unit operates the fan in the desired operation, either continuous or cycling with the heating coil. The thermostat should provide the required connection to activate the fan and the cooling and heating should not be able to be activated simultaneously.

Steam Coils See Fig. 11 and 12.

1. Be sure to provide adequate support for the piping and be sure to design the lines for expansion and vibration.

START-UP
1. Turn on power to the unit. 2. Set fan switch, on unit or on thermostat (depending on control scheme used) to ON position to energize evaporator fan. 3. Turn on water or steam supply to the unit. 4. Set the thermostat to call for heating. 5. Purge air from the coil as flow is established. 6. Check for heating effect at the air outlet. 7. Place thermostat in desired control setting.

is required. A heating coil can be subjected to freezing temperatures by outside air during the winter or by its close proximity to cooling coils during the summer or in cooling operation. Use of a freeze protection thermostat (50BB-900- - -001) is recommend.

Hot Water Coils During winter operation, either the

outside-air supply must be closed off or a minimum water flow must be maintained if freezing outdoor air is admitted. For summer operation, it is recommended that if possible that the hot water coil be closed off, drained, and residual water be blown out. If the residual water can not be blown out, an inhibited glycol antifreeze should be added to the coil.

SERVICE
NOTE: Do not use high-pressure water or air. Damage to fins may result.

Steam Distributing Coils For summer operation,

the same general precautions should be taken for steam coils as for hot water coils. During heating operation, the vacuum-return system is recommended since it helps eliminate any residual condensate from the coil. The steam distribution coils have a significantly reduced possibility of freeze-ups. They are still susceptible to freezing, however, if a minimum steam quantity is not maintained where air over the coil approaches 32 F, or if they are not properly pitched, drained, trapped and controlled. The following points should also be considered for freeze protection of steam distributing coils. 1. In cases where outside air is admitted to the unit, it should be sufficiently mixed with return air before reaching the coil in order to avoid cold spots on the coil. It is important that a minimum steam quantity be maintained when heat is called for to prevent water remaining in the tubes and possibly freezing. The ON-OFF type of steam control is preferred over modulating control where air temperature over the coil approaches 32 F. Make sure that closed outside air dampers are sufficiently sealed to prevent air leakage. Low leak style dampers are recommended. 2. Make sure that the coil is properly pitched, drained, and trapped so that condensate drains out of the coil whenever the control valve shuts off the steam supply.

Cleaning Heating Coils

If proper filtration is maintained in the unit it should not be necessary to clean heating coils. However if the coils become dirty or greasy film forms on the fins. Proper cleaning can restore the coil heating performance. For best results wash coils from discharge side and wash back toward the fan or unit return filters.
