Challenges In Horticulture Production & Exports:

High Demand but Perishable product hence short life span

Export requires numerous documentations / certifications depending on country.

Export Documentation & initial registration process and later traceability charts required by importers are time consuming and tedious, making farmers and many exporters hesitant.

EG: SEDEX/EGMARK/ISO/GLOBALGAP.

Information/Data not available on product availability, traceability for fertilizer schedules, harvesting time, maturity indexes affecting % of export and revenue (foreign exchange)

Challenges In Horticulture Production & Exports (cont’d)

Infrastructure in terms of cooling shed, cold storages, Refer Vans for Internal transport from Farm to Pack-house.

Irregular Power supply, power shortage leading Load shedding for 12 hours plus, affecting water supply to crops at the same time storage conditions thus affecting overall quality as well high wastage /spoilage %

Labor Oriented Sector which needs training for Pre-harvest processes, Harvesting, Handling of crop and Storage

Initiatives Conducted.

After attending expert group meeting in Jan 2009 in Bangkok got inspired and started pilot project with the APEDA and Krushi Vibhag ( Agriculture department) for data harmonization mostly pomegranates to start. In this subject we conducted seminars and meetings for pomegranate growers in there respective areas (Pomegranate growing pocket). Main task was to register grower on line with details of his farm size, crop cycle, harvest season, fertilizer spraying timings and more. This system has been for Export promotion now which is being upgraded regularly is seen working satisfactory.

BENEFITS

1. Growers and Exporters are saving time, in identifying each other at the same time documentation process. 2. This data has helped the exporter understand availability of fruit, Grade wise in different Pockets of the country through year/ season, helping exports more scientifically.

3. Easy to trace the origin of the produce and in case

BENEFITS (Cont’d)

5. Boost in exports helped increase foreign revenue. This

helped the farmers earnings go up in multiples helping his family have different standing in Society and It has also helped local industry like the fertilizer companies, packaging companies, logistic companies grow their business quantity and quality wise.

6. Helping farmers to plan next crop timing as well improvise production Scientifically as buyers supported farmers as well demanded quality.

7. As the

importance is realized of the data being available

24/7 online for various local and international institutions

serving mutual benefit, the government and some private bodies are coming forward to implement these systems on bigger platforms, with other horticulture/agro which can be implemented statewide.

8. Processed food industries have come forward to

9

BENEFITS (cont’d)

8. Processed food industries have come forward to manufacture products like juice, jams, Pomo Kernels , dehydrated products and like helping in employment in rural areas.

Latest findings/observations

1. Export share of the focused product has gone up by considerably

2. Scientific, Planned and organized farming came into larger existence as per demand and supply position in International & Local Markets.

3. Farmers living standard improved considerably as getting directly monitory benefits

4. Production level quality and traceability improved.

5. 9 to 10 month of production has been possible as export and local demand has developed.

6. Very important is saving valuable time at various levels of export.

7. Increase of Employment opportunities in rural areas.

Obstacles faced by private sector

Basic Infrastructure cool chain management

a. Transport (Local transport, loading/ unloading)

b. Cold storage (poor post-harvesting tech )

c. Process (Washing, Waxing)

d. Packaging.

Non availability of online documentation process

Poor training for labors as well as growers

Raising the level of productivity and quality standard to international demand

Obstacles faced by private sector …Cont

Developed countries prefer high end packaging, which involves high cost. Hence this may not be feasible for small volume growers

Data Harmonization is done at a negligible scale, which needs to be highly developed for major products which are exported

Easy access to data of trends in detailing Online statistics, current trades, past trades details could help to analyze the Source & destination for all products
