Grade 4 Weekly Planning. Week 4 - Quarter 1. Sunday 23rd Thursday 27th September 2012.

Transdisciplinary Theme: An inquiry into the Central Idea: The learner profile is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the nature of the self; beliefs and values; personal, work/habits of a school community physical, mental, social and spiritual health; Lines of Inquiry: human relationships including families, friends, - Why and how the learner profile was developed communities, and cultures; rights and - How I connect to the learner profile responsibilities; what it means to be human. - How I can use the attributes to be successful at school/guide my learning Literacy: Writing: To reinforce: 1. How to use the correct punctuation marks in a sentence. (Capital letters, full stop, question mark and exclamation mark.) 2. To know that a noun is the name of a person, place or thing and to know the difference between a common and proper noun. 3. To know that a verb is an action word and be able to recognize a verb in a sentence. Learning Objectives: 1. To be able to write good sentences for their UOI skit. (amount depends on the individual groups and ability.) 2. Be able to research, reflect and revise their work. Standard for writing: (to be used throughout the Learner Profile UOI topic.) a) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline specific tasks, purposes and audiences. Pg. 95-99 Differentiated groups. 1.8: Readiness: Identifying a Regular Hexagon(Math Masters pg. 31) Extension: Creating 6-point designs ( Math Masters pg. 32) 1.9: Use mixed ability pairing to create cheat sheets 2.2: Readiness: Play Name that Number SRB pg. 254 Extension: Solving pan-Balance Problems (Math Masters pg. 44) 2.3: Readiness: Watch BrainPop Jr. Video = Place value ones to thousands (if you need a login & password email me) Extension: Solving Number-Grid Puzzles (Math Masters pg. 46) Science LO Expose students to a simple experiment and introduce them to the concepts of keeping a record, providing evidence and measurement.

Resources: Experiment sheets, salt, lots of cups/ two large clear containers for whole class activity, spoon, hot water. By guiding students through a simple experiment (dissolving salt in water of varying temperatures) students explore the importance of record taking. Differentiation: Lower ability students will be paired with students capable of completing the assignment. Teacher supervision and assistance to be given as needed. Higher level students will be encouraged to fully explain what they observe and asked to provide conclusions.

Standard: Basic inquiry Skills

Each teacher will help their groups of children to write their skit using the above guidelines.

Unit of Inquiry Continued from last week Lesson 3 students put finishing touches on performance and perform their skit to the class. Class selects the best one. Students are to perform the skits to other grade assemblies in the following week.

Specialist (Major Focus):

Reading Complete reading assessments Separate students into groups and begin choral reading activities. Choral readings highlighting nouns and verbs within the reading. Also identify any learner profile attributes that are displayed. Teacher introduces concepts of Central Idea and supporting detail; Students are asked to write about the central idea of their stories and include any supporting

detail. Ie: The main topic of The Toy Party was ______ The supporting detail was ______________ _________________ Differentiation: Lower ability students will be using a lower leveled reader for their activity and expected to provide perhaps one or two supporting details. Teacher supervision and assistance to be given as needed. Higher level students will be reading higher leveled readers and expected to produce several different supporting details Assessment: Students will be provided with an appropriately leveled reader, which they will read quietly and then identify the central idea and the supporting details. Out of 5 1 mark for central idea and 4 for supporting details. Standard: Determine a theme of a story from details in the text, summarize the text.
