ankind has always yearned for something greater than themselves. The heavenly objectsbe it stars, or planets outside our solar systemswere once thought to be unobtainable. However, the human civilization has always found a way to overcome the obstacles that may present themselves. We at EVE uphold this very same principle. Extragalactic Venture Enterprise, or EVE, is the joint project of seven nations who have the same aspiration to explore planets beyond our solar system. By participating in this tour, you would be helping us get closer to our target budget for the extrasolar planet project.

EXTRASOLAR

PLANETS

are planets that lie beyond our solar system. These planets orbit stars, just like our own Earth, but these stars vary from pulsars to white dwarfs. Each of these star systems have their own habitable zones (places where water can exist in liquid form). These habitable zones rely on several other factors such as: variability, stellar flare, and tides.

GLIESE 581-e is a planet (summer

paradise, if you prefer that) which orbits around Gliese 581, an M3V red dwarf star in the constellation of Libra. Enjoy the stunning red dwarf sunrise near the surface of this smoking hot planet as our spaceship sweeps through its intense tidal heating. The smallest extrasolar planet in discovery unfortunately is uninhabitable due to extreme radiation from its sun (not to mention the tidal heating. However, the surface is said to resemble the Earths: rocky. However, Gliese 581-e has no atmosphere, due to its high temperature and stellar flare from its star. Missed the new year sunrise on Earth? Not to worry; Gliese 581-es new year arrives every 3.15 Earth Days!

The team used HARPS (High Accuracy Radial Velocity Planet Searcher) which makes use of the ancient radial velocity technique. Thanks to Radial Velocity the high-precision Technique: echelle spectrograph, A technique in located in our Chile which the orbit headquarters, the Gliese and mass of a 581 system has been wellplanet is detercharacterized. mined by the perturbations The planet Gliese-581 e was the fifth discovered in induced in its parent star's orbit the Gliese-581 system; following its discovery are by its gravity. Gliese 581-f (the furthest in orbit) and Gliese 581-g, (our future candidate for human habitat).

Why the interest?

Earth has become less habitable over the last few centuries. Problems such as overpopulation and depletion of essential resources necessitates the search for a new, sustainable habitat. The Gliese 581 star system is our prime candidate for a new solar system (other than several human colonies throughout the Milky Way). Located only 20.5 lightyears from our Earth, it wont be long until all of us will reside in this new part of Milky Way., the planet Gliese 581-g lying directly in the habitable zone of Gliese 581.
