OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

Logistics refers to designing and managing of a system in order to control the flow of material. Supply Chain is a larger concept to include manufacturer, supplier, transporter, warehouses, retailers, and customers. ` Transportation is an essential and major sub-function of logistics and supply chain management. The road freight volume in India grew at a CAGR of 9.06 percent during the period 1950-51 to 2007-08. Corresponding rail freight volume grew at a CAGR of 4.46 percent; much less than the 7.35 percent CAGR of GDP during the period. Freight transportation by rail accounted for about 1.1% of GDP i.e. $ 13-14 billion in the year 2008 against 4.5-5% of GDP i.e. $ 55-60 billion in case of freight transportation by road. Rail share in freight traffic in the country has come down from 86% in 1950-51 to about 35% during 2008-09. There is an urgent need for Railway Traffic officers to adapt themselves to the changing economic environment and to move IR forward from purely transport business model to a total logistics solutions provider orginazation.
