Augmented Matrices

Augmented Matrices In linear algebra, an augmented matrix is a matrix obtained by appending the columns of two given matrices, usually for the purpose of performing the same elementary row operations on each of the given matrices. The number of solutions to a system of linear equations depends only on the rank of the matrix representing the system and the corresponding augmented matrix. An augmented matrix may also be used to find the inverse of a matrix by combining it with the identity matrix. Gaussian elimination method is completely based on the need of making augmented matrices for a system of Linear Equations. A matrix is said to be augmented if it represents both right and left parts of equation. Rows and columns of an augmented matrix represent the equations and coefficients of variables in each column respectively.

We dont write variables in matrix. Rearranging of equations will be required to bring all similar variables in same column or to write variables and constants separately. This assists in writing the matrix easily. Suppose we have an equation 2x + 4y - 5z = 15 + 4y, we need to rearrange this equation to get a form like 2x + 0y - 5z = 15. Put the coefficients of variables as zero when you dont find any other value like we did in our previous example where coefficients of 'y' are getting canceled. This maintains the Symmetry of equation in a system. To draw a matrix, start with left-side Square bracket, which has symbolic representation given as "[". First write coefficients of variables in rows and columns in a particular fashion according to variables arrangement, with one equation coefficients in one row. Make sure to include any 0 coefficients. This way keeps on writing the equations in tabular form unless you are over with all linear equations in the system. In right hand side form a matrix of n x 1 dimensions. Where, 'n' represents the number of rows matrix will be having and that is equals to number of linear equations in a system. Close augmented matrix with a symbol on right - hand side that is enclosing it with a square bracket: "]". It is important to note that the path we took to get the augmented matrices in this example into the final form is not the only path that we could have used. There are many different paths that we could have gone down.

All the paths would have arrived at the same final augmented matrix however so we should always choose the path that we feel is the easiest path. Note as well that different people may well feel that different paths are easier and so may well solve the systems differently. They will get the same solution however. For two equations and two unknowns this process is probably a little more complicated than just the straight forward solution process we used in the first section of this chapter. This process does start becoming useful when we start looking at larger systems. So, lets take a look at a couple of systems with three equations in them.
