Lesson Topic: United States Government Grade level: 3 Length of lesson: 5 lesson days- 10 days to complete total project

Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard(s):

SS3CG1 The student will explain the importance of the basic principles that provide the foundation of a republican form of government. a. Explain why in the United States there is a separation of power between branches of government and levels of government. b. Name the three levels of government (national, state, local) and the three branches in each (executive, legislative, judicial), including the names of the legislative branch (Congress, General Assembly, county commission or city council). c. State an example of the responsibilities of each level and branch of government.
Understanding (s)/goals Students will understand: That the United States has three branches of governments and that each branch has specific duties. The students will understand that there are three levels of government and each level has three branches. The students will be able to name the three levels of government and the three branches in each level. The students will also be able to tell what the responsibilities of each level of government are. Essential Question(s): What are the three levels of government? What are the three branches of government? What are the responsibilities of each level and branch of government? Why are there three branches and levels of government?

Student objectives (outcomes): Students will be able to: Correctly identify the three levels and branches of government, the responsibilities of each level and branch, and what the separation of powers is. Students will be able to create a visual representation using a Web 2.0 tools with facts about the name, responsibilities, and reason for each branch and level of the United States government.

Stage 2 Assessment Performance Task(s): Other Goal: Your goal is to help your fellow classmates name the levels and branches

Evidence Evidence: Test Self-Assessment and ReflectionStudents will write a reflection

of the United States government and describe the roles and responsibilities of each level and branch. Role: You are a researcher finding out information and creating a visual using a Web 2.0 tool to explain the information you have learned for your classmates. Audience: Classmates Situation: You have to find and present facts to your fellow classmates using a Web 2.0 tool, telling them about the three levels and branches of the United States government and their responsibilities. Product Performance and Purpose: The goal is for students to create a visual representation using a Web 2.0 tool describing the three branches and levels of United States government and the responsibilities of each level and branch. Standards and Criteria for Success: Your visual needs to include 3 facts about each branch and each level of the United States government. Students may create a tree map, chart, tree with braches, or PowerPoint to present their researched information.

Day 2: Introduce Lesson Review the three branches of National Government Watch Video Podcast over State Government Complete tree map of three branches of state government Close the lesson with a recap of the three branches of state government and the responsibilities of each branch

Day 3: Introduce Lesson Review the Three branches of National and State Government and the Responsibilities of each branch Watch video podcast on local government Create a tree map over the three branches of local government and the responsibilities of each branch Review the branches and responsibilities of local government Day 4: Discuss the different Web 2.0 tools that the students can use to create their visuals Students will work on their Web 2.0 visual. Complete Study guide Day 5: Test over unit Days 5-10 Students work on Web 2.0 visuals. Day 10- Students turn in and present Web 2.0 visuals

Follow up- Students will be tested over this knowledge on the CRCT in the spring
