THE CALL TO EXPOSITORY PREACHING


Objectives: By the end of this session you should be able to... 1. List four (4) reasons preaching is generally looked down on today. 2. Biblical Models of the Preacher A. Old Testament 1. AUTHORITATIVE proclamation BY A CHOSEN REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD! C. Modern definitions of preaching: "The communication of God's message through a chosen personality to meet human need and elicit life change." (from Blackwood, Broadus, Baumann) J. I. Packer defines preaching as verbal communication of which the following things are true: 1. Content Gods message to man, presented as such. 2. Purpose to inform, persuade, and call forth an appropriate response to the God whose message and instruction are being delivered. 3. Perspective always applicatory. That is it is always aimed at changing lives and addressing life issues. It seeks to bring the truth of God and His word to bear on the life of the hearer. 4. Authority Preaching Gods Words with human lips. There is to be a Divine authority both in the content and the manner of my preaching. It is an authority that flows through the preacher as he himself lives a life of submission and service under the authority of the Word and the God of the Word. 5. Power/Presence Preaching effects an encounter not simply with truth, but with God Himself. It mediates both Christs power and His presence to those who hear the message. Preaching is to be God-centered in its viewpoint. Christcentered in its substance, life-centered in its focus and lifechanging in its thrust. (Packer, 10) II. Reasons Why We Must Preach the Word (Stott 92-133) A. A conviction about God (Theology) 1. He is the Infinite/Personal Creator Who communicates with mankind! (Ex 33:11; Mt 11:25; Jn 17:6)

2. He expresses Himself most specifically through Christ, the Word (Jn 1:1, 14-18) and through scripture, the Word (II Pet 1:20). 3. He is a missionary God, caring for all people, using His people as his messengers. (I Tim 2:7; II Pet 3:9; Romans 10:14,15) B. A conviction about Scripture (Bibliology) 1. It is the Word of God, not the mere word of man. (IITim 3:16,17) 2. It is timeless, true, authoritative, and reliable. (Ps 119:89) 3. It changes people's lives (Heb 4:12; I Thess 2:13) C. A conviction about people (Anthropology) 1. They are lost apart from God's Word. (Rom 10:13-15) 2. They are facing eternity, their decisions affect their destiny. (Jn 3:16-18) 3. They will be most fulfilled when they listen and obey God's word. (Duet 28; Jn 15:10,11) D. A clear command that we must "preach the Word". "In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage - with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry." (II Timothy 4:1-5 NIV) The ministry of preaching: 1. It is a solemn charge - in the presence of God and Christ.

2. It is an unwavering command - "preach the Word" at all times, whether good times or bad times. 3. It involves correction, rebuke, encouragement. 4. It requires great patience and careful instruction. 5. It necessitates faithfulness in the midst of apostasy. 6. It demands a steady attitude and the endurance of hardship. III. Our Philosophy of Preaching - Expository Preaching A: Expository Preaching Defined: "Expository preaching is the communication of a biblical concept, derived from and transmitted through a historical, grammatical, and literary study of a passage in its context, which the Holy Spirit first applies to the personality and experience of the preacher, then through him to his hearers." Haddon Robinson in Biblical Preaching (p. 20) "Expository preaching at its core is more a philosophy than a method. 'Do you, as a preacher, endeavor to bend your thought to the Scriptures, or do you use the Scriptures to support your thought?' " Haddon Robinson in Biblical Preaching (p. 20,21) "Preaching is not exposition only but communication, not just the exegesis of a text but the conveying of a God-given message to living people who need to hear it.... It is across this broad and deep divide of two thousand years of changing culture (more still in the case of the Old Testament) that Christian communicators have to throw bridges. Our task is to enable God's revealed truth to flow out of the Scriptures into the lives of the men and women of today." John Stott in Between Two Worlds (pp. 137,138) B: Common Characteristics of Expository Preaching (Borden pgs. 6364)

1. An expository sermon contains a clear statement of the primary biblical idea that is legitimately derived from the text. Normally this idea is developed from one single passage (paragraph or unit of thought), but can come from several passages as long as they clearly develop the same biblical idea. 2. The structure of the sermon must be consistent with the structure of the text. Thus the text governs the sermon. 3. The sermon must be relevant to listeners. It is not an exegetical lecture but an integration of biblical truth with real life. 4. Expository sermons are like a jigsaw puzzle. The idea, outline, applications, illustrations, and assertions must fit with each other as well as with the context and intent of the biblical text. C. Benefits of Expository Preaching 1. For the Preacher a. Expository preaching feeds the soul of the preacher because he is forced to dig deeply into the Word. b. Expository preaching forces the preacher to prepare his sermons well for it causes the preacher to wrestle with the text before he preaches it. c. Expository preaching increases a preachers authority for he is more confident when he preaches that he is preaching the Word of God and not just his own ideas about God. d. Expository preaching is a natural way to proclaim the whole counsel of God and not just the preachers favorite messages and themes. e. Expository preaching helps alleviate the time consuming search for a sermon text since usually the preacher will be preaching through whole books of the bible. 2. For the Listener a. Expository preaching trains the congregation to think contextually. b. Expository preaching shows the listener how to probe deeper into a biblical text to understand the intended purpose of the text and then to make legitimate applications to his life. c. Expository preaching helps the listener remember a biblical text longer since the sermon focuses on one text and one main theme from the text.
