It doesnt take them long to ditch cardigans and denim for haute couture. Costume designer Caroline Duncan, raised on the Upper East Side, didnt have to look far for inspiration. She drew on the elegant, understated fashions paraded at upscale events at the Met and the New York Public Library. The best-dressed character is Olivia Doran, a wealthy and manipulative society wife, played by Vanessa Williams. She is a benefactress who drips sophistication and has a European simplicity to her style, explains Duncan. Her image is always immaculate. Much of the action takes place at night, and Williams appears in sleek evening gowns by the likes of Roland Mouret and Oscar de la Renta. Leah Chernikoff, executive editor of the Web site Fashionista, says many New York designers feature this more conservative, uptown look in their fall collections because of the demand from a certain class of woman. Ladies-wholunch are such a powerful market, says Chernikoff. Redbooks Slater offers some budget suggestions. You are going to find versions of the ultra-flattering Roland Mouret sheath dress at places like LK Bennett, Ann Taylor, J.Crew and Boden, which almost every Asymmetrical necklines like the one Olivia favors were spotted at Roland woman is going to look good in.

VEGAS

Tuesdays, 10 p.m., on CBS The fast-action drama about corruption, justice and the mob in 60s Las Vegas premiered on Tuesday, but its already got fashionistas aflutter. Vegas is exciting, says Slater of Redbook. Of all the new TV shows for fall, it has the best chance of creating a buzz. The lead female characters Carrie-Anne Moss as a 40-something district attorney and Sarah Jones as the sassy young daughter of a mobster wear an impressive range of retro outfits that channel the Nancy Sinatra-meets-Brigitte Bardot look. We raided vintage stores in Santa Fe [where the pilot was shot] and here in Los Angeles where were filming the series, explains Vegas costume designer Kathleen Detoro. Its been relatively easy to find classic pieces like woolen knit dresses, pencil skirts and light jackets. Hourglass silhouettes are everywhere in the show, as well as pretty collars with intricate beading. The actresses love the wardrobe because it puts them even more into their character, says Detoro. The skirts are so slim, you have to carry yourself in a certain way. Take a leaf out of Detoros book and rummage through vintage shops. Beacons Closet in Brooklyn and Cheap Jacks in Manhattan are prime hunting grounds for retrofreaks. Or check out Etsy, which is a go-to online spot for vintage togs. Detoro says she bought 50 percent of the shows wardrobe from the site from dainty gloves to pillbox hats.

MADE IN JERSEY
Premieres Friday, 9 p.m., on CBS With her brightly colored jackets and cute flirty skirts, Made in Jersey heroine Martina Garretti shakes up the white-collar world of her snooty Manhattan law firm. The other female attorneys play it safe in more muted tones, but the straight-talking former Trenton DA staffer takes pride in her funkier image. Stephanie Maslansky, costume designer for the prime-time series, certainly enjoyed putting together Martinas look on Janet Montgomery, the British actress who plays the role. Martina is the underdog, the fish out of water whose fashion sense is very different from most New York City lawyers, Maslansky says. We created this whole image, which stems from her innate Jersey style. Maslansky purchased bright, nipped-in jackets and sweet printed blouses from stores such as Ann Taylor, J.Crew and Theory. Her clothes have a feminine but tomboy flavor, she explains. Theyre [massmarket] lines because this is the characters price point.
