Look up....
We would all like more space in our homes and with houses in the UK getting smaller, space is at a premium. But what if there was an affordable way to create more space in our homes? A simple solution for all those people fed up of living among clutter and one that doesnt require planning permission or any major structural building work. For most, the loft is a dark and dingy place visited seasonally; once to dig out the Christmas decorations and then again to bring down the holiday suitcases. A precarious scramble across dusty beams, torch in hand; grabbing whats needed then clambering back past boxes filled with long-forgotten belongings. But that dark and dingy place is worth thousands. In fact, it takes up a third of the floor space in an average home. So shouldnt you be making the most of it? And thats where More Than Loft Ladders (MTLL) comes in. Founded in Bolton over five years ago, MTLL specialises in generating space by making the loft easily accessible. And thats all it does. Its not a generic building company, and its not jack-of-all-trades. MTLL only installs loft hatches, ladders, boarding, lighting and insulation. Its what the company does all day, every day, using qualified local installers who are reliable, tidy and efficient. The latest MTLL franchisee to open covers Crewe and Chester and is run by skilled tradesman, Adam Shepherd...Our average job is about

Install a loft ladder and make more use of your loft!

Heres a great way to make more storage space...

290 and only takes a few hours to complete, says Adam. And for that, customers get a modern two section aluminium ladder 50sq ft of boarding and a light to make the space safe and secure. The price customers are quoted is the price they will pay, with no additional call out or credit card charges. More Than Loft Ladders is already a trusted name in the north west with over 2,500 successful installations, and I really wanted to bring it here to Cheshire...Its such a great and cost effective way for people to gain the extra space they need, added Adam. A Chester & Wirral business owner is making the blindingly obvious claim that window Blinds, Shutters & Curtains have a big part to play in the fight against rising energy bills over the coming months as autumn & winter approach. Marc McQuilliam from Apollo Blinds believes that homeowners dont recognise the full energy-saving capabilities of window blinds, shutters & curtains because they often regard them as more decorative items and forget they are a great weapon in the fight against heat loss escaping through windows.

Blindingly obvious way to keep warm this winter

6 Tel 01244 350398

Advertisement feature www.hooleroundabout.com

He is keen to point out the importance of closing blinds and shutters to stop heat escaping through windows, then drawing your curtains across to make a massive difference to your home.

I know its a very simple message, but one that a lot of homeowners dont always heed and its astounding the amount of heat loss that can be prevented by diligently drawing blinds and closing shutters, said Marc who owns Apollo Blinds Chester & Wirral (which has a new showroom in Handbridge Chester).

Marc points to a study done in Edinburgh which used thermal images of random homes in the city to demonstrate how much heat is lost through windows.

Duette blinds are a modern take on pleated blinds and have a patented double-walled honeycomb design which allows them to form air pockets that give them energy-saving properties. They can reduce the amount of heat that escapes through windows by a third during the winter and are also one of the best blackout blinds on the market, as there are no stitching holes for light to penetrate through. Then there are shutters which come into their own during the winter months providing privacy and excellent energy-saving properties. As well as the traditional wooden ones, there is a new collection of attractive vinyl shutters which are superb at keeping heat in. While the focus is quite rightly on energy saving, Marc also says that blinds, shutters and curtain look stunning as well. As well as performing a vital function, blinds, shutters and curtains also look gorgeous with stunning fabrics and wood finishes which can set any room off a treat, he said.

Blinds and curtains can act as an all-important physical barrier in preventing heat escaping through windows and should be drawn at every opportunity during the winter months.

In the news
Neighbours upset over plans for hostel for the homeless near Hoole
PLANS to put a homelessness hostel near Hoole have been met with big opposition. Cheshire West and Chester Council wants to locate the 36-bed facility at Richmond Court, in Boughton. The council has decided to launch a threemonth consultation following concerns among local residents on both sides of the canal. Residents will have the opportunity to find out more about the Councils approach to homelessness and the services to be provided at the new centre. The consultation will also provide information and seek views on building design, security and how services will be managed. In addition to a range of written information there will be literature, local drop-in sessions, opportunities for study visits and other events run by the consultation team throughout the 12-week period. Cllr Brenda Dowding said: When setting out our vision for the new service we were looking to put each individual at the heart of provision, increasing and tailoring support to help more people permanently back into settled accommodation. The accommodation includes bringing Richmond Court into use as a modern centre that will provide high quality, wellmanaged services based on a clear understanding of the problems, needs and aspirations of people who suffer homelessness. It is clearly essential that information about the services to be provided from the centre, and issues concerning building design, service management and the role of Richmond Court in the local community, should be fully understood and accepted by all involved. We hope residents will get involved and have their say on all aspects of this project - which has been set up to change the way we work with this vulnerable client group for the better. The consultation will be fully documented in a report, which will be published as a public document.

m 1 in 3 people aged over 65 will die with some form of dementia m There are 821,884 people living in UK with dementia m Dementia costs the UK 23 billion per year twice that of cancer. m 163,000 new cases of dementia occur in England and Wales each year - one every 3.2 minutes. m Caring for each person with dementia has an economic impact of 27,647 per year: more than the UK median salary (24,700). By contrast, for people with cancer the figure is 5,999, stroke 4,770 and heart disease 3,455 per year. (www.alzheimers.org)

y interest began in the 1980s working with the elderly especially those with differing types of dementia and I began researching into this fascinating disease at Keele University (Dementia is a term describing forms of cognitive impairment including memory loss, decline in judgement and changes in personality and mood; Alzheimers is the most common type of dementia.)

14 Tel 01244 350398

Dr Mary Fisher-Morris lives in Hoole and is a Chartered Psychologist with a specialist interest in Alzheimers disease.
m Often because the person themselves recognises things are not right, they become increasingly anxious. Only 43% of people with dementia actually are diagnosed, and it remains a growing and significant problem. If its undiagnosed it cant be treated, and untreated people are not having the best care. The new drugs certainly seem to have the potential to delay some of the symptoms and improve daily living substantially (www.nice.org.uk). With this in mind I focused on developing Memcheck and combined a battery of internationally approved and validated tests to accurately measure individual memory performance. Included in this assessment is the innovative CANTABmobile (recently in national press) which has been developed by Cambridge Cognition to sensitively detect the very early stages of memory impairment.

Some facts about Dementia

Early detection

Very early on in Alzheimers disease its the memory that gives the first indication that things may be going wrong. As short term memory is crucial for learning and understanding new information, glitches with this create problems in normal daily life. People often notice difficulties with reading and remembering facts; they often repeat things asking questions over and over again; appointments are missed, peoples names forgotten, handbags, phones and other personal items lost; soon family members may begin to notice the person ism Taking longer to accomplish daily tasks and looking after themselves. m Having trouble handling money & forgetting to pay bills. m Demonstrating poor judgement when dealing with people and situations- unable to act independently and tending to withdraw from social situations. m There are often mood & personality changesthe person may become aggressive, depressed or withdrawn.

National Department of Health guidance emphasises the crucial importance of early diagnosis and commencement of support and treatment to maximise quality of life. You can now do this by booking an appointment at Memcheck to determine your actual baseline performance. And remember, your results can also reassure you of perfect memory health for your age- and give you advice on how to maintain good cognitive wellbeing.

The whole philosophy of Memcheck Memory Clinic is to encourage people to take control, determine and maximise their own personal cognitive function in order to achieve their full potential. Your memory records what youve done in life, your unique and very individual differences.your experiences. loves and disappointments.. In short, it determines WHO you are; appreciate and nurture it. Remember Total Body Fitness includes Brain Health.

Vandals condemned after

ALExAnDRA Park and the nearby Coronation Playing Fields in Hoole have been the subject of a sustained vandal attack over a recent 14 day period.
The football changing rooms at Coronation Fields were targeted when vandals broke in through the roof using an axe. There was considerable damage to the roof and inside the building, with toilets, wash basins and showers damaged. Only last year Cheshire West and Chester Council funded a 10,000 refurbishment scheme after a similar attack. The Chester and District Football League is helping to put right the recent vandalism whilst the roof has been repaired by the Council. Confronted In Alexandra Park toilets were damaged. A cistern was ripped off a wall, handles removed from toilets, one toilet bowl lifted off its fittings and excrement was smeared on the walls of the gents toilets. One vandal continued to smash a sink drainage pipe when he was confronted by a park user.

Excrement was smeared on the walls of the gents toilets

The toilets have now been refurbished by the Council. The Veterans Hut door had been boarded up because it had been smashed, as well as the windows, and vandals gained entry by breaking through a wall. The Council is working with Police and also Council patrols have been stepped up in the park at night. Councillor Stuart Parker, Executive Member for Culture and Recreation said: This wide spread destruction has left many people who use the Park and Coronation Playing Fields angry and heartbroken. Why carry out such senseless acts? The vandals have got to remember that they are hurting their own community who are now suffering because of their wanton actions. If anyone has information they should contact Police as quickly as possible. Police Inspector Kevin Chambers said: Cheshire Police will not tolerate mindless acts of vandalism such as this. We understand that antisocial behaviour and vandalism can have a profound effect upon our communities and residents, and we will do all we can to act on reports of such criminality and gather an intelligence picture to bring to justice those who commit this type of offence.

er attacks in Hoole parks

Local Councillor Alex Black said: This destruction has got to stop and if park users see anything suspicious they should immediately call Police because this trail of destruction must come to an end. The toilets were left in a disgusting state of disrepair. They have now been put right but sadly for now can only be used by organised groups, such as bowls players, who will be given keys so that they can use the facilities. Pride Added local Councillor Bob Thompson: This sustained attack has affected everyone who takes pride in and enjoys this wonderful park and nearby Coronation Playing Fields. It is extremely sad that the Veterans Hut has been a target for the vandalism. And it is not only the smashed windows and graffiti outside - they were determined to get inside the building as well. And it must not be forgotten that the Councils repair bill will ultimately be paid by Council taxpayers. Members of the Chester and District Football League are rallying round to help repair the changing rooms. Paul Graham, Secretary of Chester and District Football League said: The damage is absolutely appalling and totally mindless. League members are working together to repair the inside of the Coronation Playing

Fields building. Some of our members are plumbers and builders in their day jobs, so we have the skills needed to make sure the changing rooms are up and running in the next few weeks. Added Councillor Parker: This is a great example of the Council and the community working together to defeat the vandals. Hoole is a fantastic place to enjoy all sorts of sports and is well loved by residents of all ages. I am really pleased that the community has rallied round and we need to make it clear to the minority who have carried out this vandalism that this is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Pictures show the state of the vandalised toilets (left) and Greenspace ranger Andy James outside the toilets (above)

It is estimated that more than 20,000 pensioners were forced to sell their homes to pay for care in 2010 (Source: The Telegraph, November 2010) and that number could be on the increase given rising care costs. In most cases this includes the value of any property owned. However, there are circumstances in which the family home is ignored: if you have a spouse or relative aged 60 or over still living in the home it will not be included within the local authoritys financial assessment. It should also be ignored if your care needs are classed as temporary. In addition, if your other assets, excluding the home, are less than 23,250, then you should not be charged for the first 12 weeks. Those in this situation can request that a legal charge is put on their home rather than selling it upfront. For many people the self-funding route is going to be their only option. It is a worrying prospect as the cost of care can quickly add-up and eat into your savings. On average, someone who requires care in a residential care home will pay 524 per week, and for a nursing care home 722 per week, a huge ongoing amount to find at any age, let alone in later years. However, these are averages across local authority funded and self funded care, many self funders will pay much more than these averages.

Some people do get state help. Depending on your income you may get state help, although a person who owns his or her home is likely to fail the local authority means test and be deemed a self-funder. In England, this threshold is 23,250 which has been frozen until 2013.

It doesnt take much to work out that you wouldnt have to be in a care home for too long before you or your family had spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on paying fees. In the past, pre-funded care insurance plans were an option aimed at those who think they might need to go into care in the future. But as it stands not one UK insurer provides pre-funded insurance today with the last provider exiting the market in 2010, citing lack of demand. This can provide some certainty for people moving into care, as they know their fees will be guaranteed to be paid for life; their money will not run out and they will not have to move into a local authority-run home later. There is also the reassurance that whatever is left from the sale of the Instead, perhaps the most popular option for paying for long-term care is an immediate care annuity, which pays a tax free fixed income for life, provided that it is paid directly to the care home provider.

home, once the annuity has been bought, can be left to the next generation. You could try to fund care fees out of regular income if you have the means to do so. For starters, if you are going into care and have no dependants, then your own property could be rented out and the rent used to offset the fees. Alternatively, with careful planning you could build an investment portfolio designed to pay an income without taking undue risk. You will need expert help because it is crucial that your capital is protected to a large degree. Again, just be aware that several years fees could quickly add up, so the balance and diversification of assets will have to be just right.

We are all expected to live longer but while that is good news it is likely to mean that more people will need to consider care fees not just for themselves, but also for their parents. It is an issue that many baby boomers are dealing with at this very moment and it is an issue that is unlikely to disappear.

What was your favourite moment? Local gymnast Beth achieving her bronze? Our rowers dominating the medals? andy Murray achieving the gold or Jessica Ennis showing us what it is to be an all round star athlete? there were so many moments for Britons to feel proud and that was before we even considered the tens of thousands of volunteers!
I was in London at the start of the Olympics and there were volunteers on street corners literally giving out free bottles of water! It was amazing! Britain was bathed in feelings of joy and pride and we all remembered what It was like to wake up and feel good to be alive! When we are lit up by something that inspires us and that is bigger than our own personal ego ,we step into the possibility of miracles. It is no longer about us. It is about the bigger picture. It is about the surge of joy in our hearts. We start to make decisions from our heart not our head. Each successful athlete followed the calling in their heart, the spark of a dream, to be there. As other youngsters were out on the town having fun, they would be in the gym or on the river training hard. There might have been times when they didnt feel like it. There are always times when we wake up in the morning and dont feel like going to work or pushing ourselves to do that bit more. If you are doing it just for yourself then its tough. But if you are coming from an inspired place, it is so much easier.

If you want to earn more money, you can do it the hard way by simply working hard and focussing on the personal wealth youll achieve. Or you could widen your perspective a little and do it for your family and loved ones. On that note, I always recommend that you keep a picture of them on your work desk. However , if you really want to attract lots of money then you need to shift your focus entirely. Recognise that money is simply an exchange of value. Instead of looking at what you can get , look at what value you can give to others. What is your gift? Why were you born on this earth? What would you like to leave as your legacy. Our Olympian athletes have left a powerful legacy for the next generation. Our role is to keep that spirit alive and the best way you can do that personally is to follow your own dream, irrespective of others. In the words of Nike, Just do it!. l Marie-Claire Carlyle coaches people to find their personal direction and to achieve their full potential . She is author of how to become a Money Magnet! Carla strikes gold in transplant games

TWiCE-kidney-transplanted Hoole resident Carla Phillips, 41, has taken five medals in this years British Transplant Games held in Kent. Carla, who suffered a stroke three years ago and received her second kidney transplant a year later in 2010, won medals, including two golds, in archery, swimming, track and ten pin bowling, for her team from the Royal Liverpool Hospital, which is a renal transplant centre for much of the North West and North Wales. The British Transplant Games took place between the Olympics and Paralympics and attracted competitors from all over the UK, every one of whom has received a solid organ transplant. The games take place annually and are open to competitors of all ages, from 5 85. Events include track and field, swimming, cycling, archery and racquet sports. The opening ceremony, which took place at Rochester Cathedral was a chance to remember those who donated organs so that others may live. Carla says, Without people signing the organ donation register, many of us would not be here, its a great chance for us to show the benefits of organ donation and pay respect to those who gave us the gift of life. The Royal Liverpool Hospital Transplant team comprises of people from all walks of life, and all ages, who have had kidney transplants, explains Carla, who is also an advocate for the UK transplant charity Live Life then Give Life, Every member of the team has an amazing story of survival and a second chance at life. We fund raise together all year round to raise enough money to get us all to the games, and we are very much like a family. Every competitor is an inspiration, we have three members who carried the Olympic torch this year and two of our members have OBEs, we are very much about living life to the full with the incredible gift weve been given. I decided to join the team because I wanted a way to keep fit and I was already an archer, so I thought, why not? Its a wonderful motivation for keeping as fit as possible, and because people with good muscle mass and a healthy lifestyle keep their transplants longer, I really had nothing to lose! The medals were a bonus!

an honest mistake
iT started late afternoon on Saturday. i had woken a little more fragile than normal, managed to cook a full English breakfast and see everybody off safely before collapsing on the bed while trying to remove my socks. My significantly more fragile significant other woke me by dropping something close to the bed in an effort not to make any noise en route to the window. What are you doing? I ask, trying to appear fresh and revived from my siesta. It sounds like an electric screwdriver I was not quite sure how to respond to this and so I lay there awaiting an update on the backyard proceedings. The live feed was buffering. What is it? I asked, caving in to the anticipation. Its an electric screwdriver. What, just sitting there in the backyard screwing itself? Theyre putting up a bracket for a hanging basket. Who are? The people that back on to us, not quite opposite. Two down on the other side. Apparently that is the end of the broadcast and no more is said. A significant amount of time passed without conversation. I was feeling less fragile so get up to look out of the window. The lady who moved in across the back to us (2 down as already reported) had already hung the basket planted up with young plants and was in the process of watering them. What is?

Its smaller than I expected I said as I surveyed her progress. The bracket and the thing... It appeared that I had lost my ability to articulate along with the last few hours of our Cheese and Wine evening. Have they finished hanging it? Yeah. What have they hung from it? A cat! What do you think? Patience seemingly lost somewhere along the way too. As the basket filled up with water the top of the bracket came away from the wall and tipped its contents all over the lady as she reached up with the watering can.

A very British misunderstanding

As the feeling gradually came back to my limbs I was surprised at how little I was suffering compared to the others. A text message confirmed that they had got home safely. The bottles in the recycling clattered as a load reminder of but I was on a roll. By the time Id avoided the X Factor, I was firing on all cylinders. I took a wander into Hoole and broke the Cheese addiction with a bag of chips and a pie. As I began happily devouring my supper, I noticed a bloke crossing over the road. Id spoken to him before but only polite hellos and what happened to the summers. I waited to repeat the protocol rather than appearing rude and shovelling chips into my mouth as I made

off down Faulkner Street but he had not seen me and headed towards the orange glow of Sainsburys where promptly bumped into two women walking out. They were attractive and dressed for a night out and certainly caught the blokes attention. He apologised, smiled broadly and stepped to one side to allow them to pass. I noticed he wasnt as steady on his feet as I remembered him to be and he simply stood there swaying slightly rather than walking on into the store. The women laughed and thanked him flashing bright smiles and sparkling eyes. There was a hint of recognition in the look on the blonde womans face. Weve met before havent we! She stated rather than questioned. The bloke was obviously under the impression that this was a chat up line. He shifted his weight, puffed out his chest and cracked a broad smile. He was practically glowing. Have we? He said, full of charm and confidence. Yeah, a long time ago. She said. I think you could possibly be the father of one of my kids! She did not laugh, wink or give any other indication that she was pulling his leg. The look of sheer panic that now took over was amazing. The colour drained from his face and he even positioned himself so that he was covering that certain part of his anatomy that would have contributed to such a claim, should the claim have been true. I dont think so. He managed to state amid a mumbled response of varying denial but his expression was one of reflection and having lost the last few hours of my own previous

evening I felt a sense of empathy for the man. To add to his sudden sobering circumstances, the woman appeared to be further confirming her statement. She was trying to work out the date that they met. She was puzzling on whether it was last October or possibly closer to Christmas. Its Alan isnt it? She said and held out her hand to shake it. I watched the blokes legs weaken beneath him and gathered that she was correct. Alan took her hand limply and stared at her some more before taking a sharp intake of breath. You dont remember me do you? She said which appeared to further disable him. Hed put his hands in his pockets and was twisting them deeper as he tried to convince her that she was mistaken. He was happily married. He showed her the ring and it was at this part the woman threw back her head and laughed. Was this all a joke? If so, as much as I admired her brilliance in the delivery of such a brush off and had enjoyed being part of the audience, I also realised it was cruel thing to do. The man looked haunted. His eyes were wide. He showed physical signs of trauma. I was your daughters reception teacher! She was one of my kids last year The relief enveloped him. Embarrassed he apologised. She too apologised and they suddenly became very British about the misunderstanding. I put my empty chip wrapper in the bin beside them and headed home thanking the powers that I lived here in Hoole, able to observe such a rich soap opera of comical genius in the things that surround me.

HOOLE RANGERS FC

Striker shortage brings fine start to a halt

HooLE Rangers FC started the new season really well, winning their first two league games against Crossways and Shaftsbury youth, followed by a first round victory in the Tom Gerraghty cup against Premier league side, Raby Villa. However, our excellent start came to an abrupt end with a Challenge cup defeat against Division 1 side Lodge Bar, losing the game by 2-1 and brought about by our inability to score despite the many chances we created. This was followed by a decent performance and 1-1 league draw away against a very strong Levers side, a result achieved despite being without three of our regular strikers. The games and results so far give us confidence that we have a team capable of challenging for honours this season, but we know that the standard in Chester and District League is improving every year so we really need to play to our potential in every game. Seconds The 2nd team are in Division 1, which once again, boasts a very strong group of teams this year. The unfortunate thing about being a reserve side is that the 1st team pillage their players when they are short, and during August and early September, the number of players on holiday is always high. With significantly weakened sides, they started their league campaign with a defeat against title favourites Lache, followed by a creditable draw against HalfwayHouse Celtic. Their following 2 cup matches also ended in very disappointing defeats, so after four games, the results have not been what we had expected after the very good pre-season. We have had at least six regular players missing every week so far this season, so we are still confident that once we get to full squads each week, the first team will continue with the string of good results, and the reserves will start to turn things around and become the very competitive side we know they are capable of being. Changing rooms We are still working on the changing room plans, but as with all activities of this kind, minor delays have been experienced getting the initial approvals from all stakeholders. While this can be frustrating, it is really important as it will help once we have planning permission, and are looking for approvals and funding to execute the project . As always, we are looking for sponsors this season, helping fund items such as tracksuits, match balls, match fees etc. or maybe helping with the changing room refurbishment project. If any individuals or businesses are interested in working with a very ambitious local football club, please contact me on the e-mail or mobile number given below Training to-date has been held at New Scene on a Monday night, however as the nights draw in, we will once again move to the all weather pitches at Blacon High school. If any new players want to join the club with a view to playing this season, please contact me on mobile / e-mail below and I will advise how you can get involved.

AUTUMN DELIGHTS
GarDEninG By JanEt hEath
OCtOBEr is the month when plants start to die back and it is more difficult to keep the flowering interest going. the shrubby Ceratostigma plumbaginoides or Ceratostigma willmottianum, have blue flowers over a long period into autumn. they are suitable for a sunny position and grow to 18ins (45cm) tall. they form a rounded bush and often have reddish foliage in late autumn before the leaves drop.
Sedum spectabile is great value if you like their fleshy, rubbery leaves and flat heads of pink to dark red flowers that are loved by bees in autumn. They enjoy a sunny position and seem to put up with soil types ranging from well drained to heavier clay. The seed heads last well into winter and look lovely with frost on them. I love the stunning flowers of Passiflora caerula, the Passion Flower and wish I could find the right place for it in my garden. This

lovely climber will flower well into autumn. However it likes a moisture retentive well drained soil in a sunny sheltered situation which can be difficult to provide. Growing it next to a sunny wall seems ideal provided you keep the roots watered and avoid windy or frosty areas. The Kaffir Lily or Schizostylis coccinea is easy to grow if your soil is on the moist side and will flower into November. This perennial has grassy leaves and tall stems of pink to red flowers. It is not too late to finish cutting hedges before winter and shortening long stems of shrubs that may be susceptible to wind damage like roses and buddleia. If you want to plant evergreen shrubs, September and early October are good months to do so as their water supply is more reliable so the newly planted shrubs will not dry out. The soil will be warm after the summer so roots will grow away setting the plants up for next year. Perennials like Geraniums, Hostas and Hemerocallis can be divided in autumn but cut back the foliage so the plants concentrate on developing roots before winter.

By thE rEV anDy GLOVEr AFTER an amazing summer of sport watching the Olympics and the Paralympics and just when we thought that every kind of modern sporting parable in the book had been exhausted Andy Murray popped up in the early hours of September 10th to break the habit of a British lifetime and seal a grand slam mens tennis title. Murrays extraordinary summer and his admirable and absolute persistence after being so near and yet so far from that first elusive grand slam stands out as remarkable. It is surely the icing on an already well decorated summer cake of sport. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again are the lyrics of a Dorothy Fields song from the last century. The idea is lovely and admirable but we all know that such determination and patience, particularly from a starting point of disappointment, or even defeat, is far from easy. And of course persistence can have its dark side. How many of those shady Shakespearean characters come to mind when, like Iago for instance, their persistence towards evil, motivated by sinfulness, knows no bounds? Andy Glover has lived in Hoole with his wife Sue for 22 years. Andy began at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, as Youth Pastor, before becoming the Pastor and now Team Leader.

But Andy Murray has displayed positive persistence over quite a time now and we know that such strength of character is reliant on much more than physical development. Time and again, in both the Olympics and Paralympics, we saw the same thing: athletes called on to develop an inner strength as part of their daily training regimes. Athletes find this in a variety of ways.

Over many centuries many of the great Christian spiritual writers, the Church Fathers in particular, regarded their inner strength as being inspired both from the great prayers of the Old Testament Lord let me never give in, give up, give way and from the teaching of Jesus himself. It is not difficult to sum up the Christian Gospel as an essay in the kind of persistence, which sees us believing that we can overcome all obstacles if we have such faith whatever is put in our way. It was Pope Gregory who suggested that persistence is essential if any good is to come of our lives: as the voice of truth tells us he writes whoever perseveres to the end will be saved. St Paul also love the theme of persistence, when he gleaned that some of the Early Churches were slacking in keeping going a discipline of hard work and dedication. His advice, when writing to the Church at Galatia, was that when we are at the point of giving up on something or someone there are three things to remember: First, dont get tired. Secondly, Dont ever give up. And most important of all: You will then, through persistence, reap your true reward. Surely these are the characteristics we want to instil into our children and young people, all to often it can seem that life is to be delivered up on a plate and fame and celebrity life is just about getting yourself in the right place at the right time. We can all have the attitude that life owes us something but the shining example of our athletics and in particular the Paralympics athletics demonstrates that if we are willing to work hard, persist in following our dreams and never give up it is just possible that we can achieve our dreams. As the nights draw in and the summer becomes a distant memory lets us recommit ourselves to these characteristics and apply ourselves in preserving and never giving up so that we too can see our own personal dreams begin to become realities.
