Mechanical Engineering 3rd Year Information Sheet for Winter 2013 Registration

Greetings from your academic advisor. You will need the following information to make an informed choices for your courses for Winter 2013. You are one year away from graduation; please dont mess it up. Read the following information and follow the instructions. Good luck on your exams. -Dr. B.
CHECK YOUR DEGREE AUDIT! From SIS, you can link to your degree audit, which contains checkmarks for all of the requirements in the program. Theoretically, your degree audit should have a green checkmark beside all of the requirements for years 1, 2, and 3. If it does not, you need to figure out what you are missing. You should have a plan for how to complete your degree requirements by the end of Summer 2013; I can help with that. If you choose to ignore your degree audit, the registrar will have no trouble ignoring your application to graduate next summer. Below are the requirements for semester 7 and 8 in your option program. Check your degree audit to make sure you are registered for the correct option. Then check out your option program below for instructions on Winter 2013 registration. GENERAL PROGRAM OPTION You have 3 required courses and 3 technical electives. Here are the Winter 2013 technical electives that you can choose. (Also note that 2 of your 6 technical electives in 4th year can be replaced by unrestricted electives. These electives can be taken from any department or faculty; the only restriction is that they have a minimum course weight of 3.)

Mechanical Engineering 3rd Year Information Sheet for Winter 2013 Registration Dr. Bowerss advice: DONT CHOOSE AN ELECTIVE BASED SOLELY ON ITS TITLE. Ask the 4th year students about the professors and the course content. They have taken all of these courses, and know all of these professors. They can provide you with a wealth of information on what to take and perhaps what to avoid. 89-331 Thermodynamics & Kinetics of Materials Dont be fooled by the course title; its really just Thermo 3. You finally get to meet other energy terms (Gibbs! and Helmholtz), deal with systems that contain more than 1 component, and calculate energies for reactions. 89-420 Ceramic Materials Its a materials course, but it does discuss aspects of brittle fracture. 89-421 Deformation & Fracture This course fits in well with your Stress Analysis and Design for Failure Prevention courses. It covers 3-D aspects of stress and strain and has a good design project. 89-440 Materials Degradation This course covers wear and corrosion. There will likely be some automotive content because Dr. Northwood works with steels for powertrain components. 89-450 Welding Engineering You will learn about welding, but not how to weld. You will finish with the skill to write welding procedures to meet boiler and pressure vessel code requirements. 92-450 Gas Dynamics Supersonic flow, compressible fluids, shock waves, converging and diverging nozzles with applications in aerospace and automotive. 92-453 Air Conditioning AC is generally a part of the mechnical engineering program. You have had an intro in Applied Thermo, now you get to look at the whole picture for home and factory scale systems. 94-461 Design for Manufacturability This course provides an overview of the manufacturing processes, with an emphasis on aspects that can affect production. All of these concepts are then used to execute designs in CATIA. 94-463 Vehicle Dynamics This course covers dynamics with applications in vehicles. Good for mechanical students who want exposure to vibrations and 3-D mechanics. MATLAB is used. 94-467 Vehicle Thermal Management Applications of fluids and heat transfer for automotive systems like air conditioning and radiators. FINAL NOTES 1. Control Theory is also offered in Fall 2012, in case you need to make up a course in Winter or Summer. 2. In extreme cases where graduation would be delayed otherwise, you can request to take Engineering & Society in Winter 2013 rather than Summer. You must make a very strong case to receive permission to move this course to Winter.
