Twenty- sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30th 2012

There are not many 12 year olds who would spend an entire Saturday at a barber shop with a table set up for information about the Cascade Aids project. When all was counted, in the end, he raised $8,847.00. His fourth year total has been more than $20,000 for the AIDS Walk Portland. And in the last two years, he has had more than 8,000 blog hits (people reading about HIV and his motto: Be Smart. Get Tested. Have Safe Behaviors.) This is something he believes in as he wants to make a positive difference in peoples lives. He is an inspiration to all of us as one person CAN make a difference. Congratulations!!!! Keep in mind Alazar is 12, and out-raised all the adults. Part of his success was due to his blog: www.ateamfund.org and the other part was just plain hard work and keeping this at the forefront of his activities for an ENTIRE YEAR.

PASTORAL CORNER RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

In a test of our shared humanity as children of God, and an imperative for peace and the common good of the whole human family, we Catholics are called by Gods love to advocate for religious freedom of all people of all faiths. When religious freedom is acknowledged, the dignity of the human person is respected at its root because we are all created in the image and likeness of God. (Imago Dei) Religious freedom is a value in its own right because it frees up individuals and communities to pursue ultimate truths. To hold this freedom dear for not only ourselves, but for all people, is a challenge of our maturity in Christ, and as a faith community. And it is a challenge to us as Americans and citizens of a powerful democracy to take as a special responsibility to promote religious freedom for our brothers and sisters in all nations and of all religious traditions. We must advocate with our political leaders to make religious freedom a central feature of U.S. foreign policy. Around the world 150,000 Christians are killed for their faith every year. In the Middle East, Christians are

fleeing violence and persecution in a massive exodus. They are leaving countries where Christianity has not only flourished, but in many cases took root 2000 years ago in the first spread of Christianity. They have been there longer than the Islamic community. Not only Christians are being persecuted, though. other minority religious communities are also disrespected and being driven out, including various Muslim minorities. Christians who speak out for religious freedom for all people, because of their pursuit of the truth, live in fear or are martyred in an insult to God and human dignity. This cannot be allowed to stand. As believers who know the value and dignity of every human person. We must find ways to hold out political and economic leaders to account for allowing human beings to take second place to other values. And among the freedoms that stand in the first rank for us to defend, religious freedom stands at the top. We must insist that we be informed ourselves, and that our leaders be informed of the dangers to the human community that flow from ignoring this basic human right. We Catholics can also take further concrete steps by supporting Catholic Relief Services who reach out to people of all faiths who are suffering. Fr. Jim McCauley, CSP
