Diana : Surprisingly Im so tall, Thank you very much for your very kind introduction of professor Xiao.

I really appreciate and Id like to express my appreciation that including Jewish friendship between our two nations and the special opportunity to talk to you today. I like you to know thank I deeply value the times between America and Taiwan and thank you very much for the invitation to be here and may continue to strengthen the bone between your charitable sectors and ours across the Pacific. Although were separated by ten thousands kilometers of open water, our sectors have very much in common. The NGO committees in Taiwan and America for example are both dedicated to improving quality of life. As voluntary organizations, those characters enjoy the freedom to do so in a thousand different ways. Conducting lives saved experiments, supporting the work of paintings and sculptures, running student exchanges and the exchanging programs, providing food and housing or helping battered women reclaim their lives which are part of my own early experience in the Non Profit Committee. What I find some compelling about the rainbow of missions is letting in the right circumstances. Many of them are mutually really forcing, consider for instance what it means to secure a childs future. Imagine right now that the deepest research make possible by the Formosa Cancer Foundation ,Taiwan oncology society and other entity succeed one day and promising doctors discover the cure of the cancer, the number one cause of death in this nation since 1982. Now imagine a young girl in Taipei who has cancer. Thanks to the new cure, she is able to avoid its ravaging effects. Her death sentence has been converted into a chance of a successful and fulfilling life. Or hasnt? If the only investment made in that child were the cure of the cancer, what kind of life would she have? Would she have the opportunity to attend the decent school? Would she have access to drink clean water, clean playground and the exposure to beautiful art and music? And later on will she have a job (for her)? Would she have a chance to earn well enough to help support her family?

As essential as curing cancer will be, it could still be by a first step in a chain of conditions. Each connected to one and other and each one could promote her to strive. Saving a life as great accomplishment as it is, is not the same as securing the future. Thats what I like to talk about today. Leaders in the NGO community with courage and vision to build NGOs that thrive in the 21st century to secure the future for the people we serve. I believe we need to cultivate organizations: dare to change, invest people, and measure resolved. With title might remarks is leading and serving NGO communities and American perspective. My reflection stand from my professional experience is on working in the US non-profit center for several decades. Because I grew up in South Africa, Im aware of the respecting culture differences. One of my causes for except of business practice in one country might be proceed as inappropriate even offensive in another. I remind myself of this by mentoring the following: Shaking your hands horizontally means no in many countries but yes in India. Giving someone a thumbs up means everything is ok left in American and Europe but it is offensive in the Middle East. In and Mediterranean and Africa its acceptable to arrive 30 minutes late for a dinner at a friends home but the host in Germany or Switzerland will find such behavior be extremely rude. With that say, its also true that they are some universal qualities that transcend in a culture and conditions. Even as I travel around the United State to places inhabited by people with experiences and backgrounds that could not be more different than my own, I ask them to think hard about their reactions to the new ideas especially if they find themselves doubtful and defensive. Perhaps its not a culture difference but rather describe that my con draw a unfamiliar way to doing things the great French novelist Marcel Proust remind us: The real voyage to discovery consists not in seeking new landscape but having new eyes. In my remarks I will draw the example from united state charitable sector as a way to provide a window into a merging chance. I encourage you to adapt them to your organization to lead circumstances. I respectfully summit to you that only you are in the best position to do so. I offer my thoughts today out of sincere desire to share what Ive learned of leading and serving the NGO community in America.
