Symmetry with Style

HomeStyle Hacienda

After 35 years living in some of the worlds most exotic cities, Jack and Judy decided to move back to California. They found an idyllic property situated in Carmel Valley and opted to build their dream home from the ground up. Right after we acquired the land in 2006, Jack retired and we bought a co-op apartment in San Francisco, recalls Judy. We wanted to be close enough so that I could be involved in the design, construction and dcor of our new home. The couple moved into their distinctively elegant 6,800-squarefoot hacienda-style home in 2008. We wanted to be respectful of the area and a Spanish hacienda style really complemented the land, Jack adds. For me, this symmetrical and balanced style creates a peaceful environment, adds Judy. The design of the home was very much a handson collaboration with architect Werner Maasen of Hart Howerton, San Francisco, Bob Lis of RJL Construction and us, says Judy. Werner really listened to us and translated our vision into a plan. Bob and his team made the plan a reality. The hacienda design more than afforded Judy the symmetry she sought. The home is built around a central courtyard. The left side is mirrored by the right with the front entry and the living room, dining room and Jacks den in the center. The second you step through the door, you can look all the way through the living room to the amazing views, marvels Judy. Also in the quest of balance, Jack and Judy opted to make the right side the noisy side with the kitchen, family room and laundry room. Its counterpart, the quiet side, includes all the bedrooms. All the main living areas, including the bedrooms, open onto a patio, courtyard or beautiful view. The floor plan flows from the inside to the outside beautifully, she adds.

This well-laid-out home is filled with light that streams in through the artful and bountiful windows. The beautiful doors and windows definitely help carry out the style of the home, says Judy. Werner designed the placement and configuration of the windows and doors, opting for an aged look to create the appearance of a century-old abode. After touring the factory and showroom and meeting with co-owner Jack Topalian, Brothers Custom Windows & Doors was selected to engineer, manufacture and factory-finish the homes entry way, exterior doors and all of the windows. Brothers Custom Windows & Doors, based in San Carlos, has crafted windows and doors for some of the Monterey Peninsula areas most distinctive homes. One such residence was near Jack and Judys acreage. They partnered with us to fabricate windows and doors in a way that brought their vision to life, says Jack Topalian, President of Brothers which he owns and operates with brother and business partner George Topalian.

To best achieve the perfect appearance, we built the windows and doors out of cedar then sandblasted them to achieve a specific finish, explains George Topalian. The main entry door was crafted of mahogany and distressed to achieve a look all its own. They wanted it to have a substantial, exotic look. It was a true collaboration and a delight to work with this team. Brothers also used their expertise to ensure that the windows and doors would not only look great, but also function properly for many years to come. The intent was that the house appear like it was built 100 years ago, adds Jack Topalian. Theres a lot of engineering and design that goes into creating that look. Christine Sorensen of A French Touch in Pacific Grove put the finishing touches on the homes interior with masterful faux finishes and charming hand-painted details. The softness of the colors and the delicate yet distinctive murals brought all the elements of the dcor into harmony, Judy says.

It was such a joy working with Jack and Judy, says Bob. One reflection of their warm and caring natures was the thank you party they threw for all of us who worked on the project. More than 125 subcontractors and their family members came, and Jack and Judy made us all feel like family. Everyone toured the house so they could see how their work fit with everyone elses, says Judy. The indoor/outdoor nature of the homes design really came in handy for that party. We feel so blessed to have this beautiful home to share with family and friends. And to have had such a smooth, easy, joyful construction process. Wed do it all again! Please see page 111 for resources for this home.
