T
he term polydipsia
refers to excessive
thirst. We see this as an
increase in the amount of water
being drunk, which, in turn,
usually leads to polyuria, which
means your cat is urinating
more often and at a larger vol-
ume.
These changes may be
very subtle and slowly progres-
sive, or quite obvious. You may
observe an increase in the
amount of wet litter in a cat's
litter box or even accidents
outside the litter box. Some
cats may begin drinking from a
dripping faucet in the sink or
from an open toilet bowl.
However, if you want to deter-
mine exactly how much your
cat is drinking, allow him only
one source of water and sub-
tract the amount left in the
bowl after 24 hours from the
amount you put in originally.
On average, a 10-pounds cat
takes in about 2.5 cups per day.
This includes any water that is
taken in from other sources,
such as canned food.
If you determine that your
pet is drinking excessively or
just think its more than usual,
make an appointment with
your veterinarian because
polyuria and polydipsia (drink-
ing and urinating more) can be
an early sign of a serious dis-
ease. These can include: kidney
failure, diabetes mellitus,
hyperthyroidism (overactive
thyroid), liver disease, elec-
trolyte abnormalities, pyometra
(uterine infection), other less
common endocrine disorders,
and diabetes insipidus.
Several diagnostic tests
may be needed to determine
the cause of your cats polyuria
and polydipsia because many
different diseases can cause
these signs. Any visit to your
vet should begin with a com-
plete medical history and thor-
ough physical examination.
Initial testing may include
measurement of water intake at
home, complete blood count
(CBC), blood chemistry tests
(including electrolytes), urinal-
ysis, urine culture and sensitivi-
ty, thyroid hormone (T4) con-
centration, and abdominal X-
rays or ultrasound.
In older cats, the three
most common disease condi-
tions seen in practice that
cause polyuria and polydipsia
are kidney failure, diabetes
mellitus, and hyperthyroidism.
Diabetes mellitus diagno-
sis is based on high blood glu-
cose concentration and the
presence of glucose, and often
incompletely broken down fat
products called ketones in the
urine. This disease is very treat-
able in the long term. Initial
treatment depends on the
severity and may include hospi-
talization with intensive fluid
and electrolyte therapy in con-
junction with administration of
short-acting insulin, or outpa-
tient management with long-
acting insulin.
Kidney failures diagnosis
is based on serum biochemistry
tests and urinalysis. Treatment
is based on rehydrating the cat,
trying to slow the progression
of the kidney disease by
dietary modification and
treating complications
such as hypertension, nau-
sea, and urinary tract
infection.
Hyperthyroidisms
diagnosis is based on meas-
urement of thyroid hor-
mone concentration via
blood work. Difficult cases
may require specialized
blood tests or imaging.
Treatment consists of drug
therapy or radiation or less
commonly surgery. This dis-
ease is also very treatable in the
long term. Treatment with
radioactive iodine ("I-131")
will require referral to a special-
ty clinic or teaching institution
in your area.
Optimal treatment of any
persistent medical condition
depends on establishing the
correct diagnosis. The symp-
tom group polyuria and poly-
dipsia has many different
potential causes, and it is
important to identify the
underlying cause before begin-
ning treatment. Please visit
your veterinarian as soon as you
notice any changes because
with an early diagnosis you
often get a better outcome.

A
dults who play golf
know just how fun
and frustrating the
game can be. Whether you're a
veteran golfer or someone just
learning the links, golf can be
challenging.
But as exacting as the
game can be, it also can be just
as rewarding, even for kids.
Children who embrace the
game of golf will learn a host of
lessons they can apply in all
facets of life. A humbling game
even for professional golfers,
golf can teach kids lessons in
humility and the value of per-
sistence even when things
aren't going your way.
Golf is also a great way for
parents to get kids off the
couch and outdoors for some
fun in the sun. Instead of
spending summer afternoons
in front of the television, kids
who play golf are out patrolling
pristine golf courses while get-
ting some cardiovascular exer-
cise along the way. Golf can
also strengthen a childs hand-
eye coordination, which can
help them in other activities,
including many different
sports.
Though many people do
not begin playing golf until
theyve reached adulthood, its
never too early for boys and
girls to start learning the game
of golf. Parents of preschoolers
can start their kids off with a
toddler play set. Though its
just a toy, a play set can help
lay a solid foundation for future
golfers. Kids who have
watched Mom and Dad play
golf or practice their swing can
develop their own swings on
their play set.
As kids approach school
age, dont overlook the nearby
putt-putt or miniature golf
range as a valuable teaching
tool. Miniature golf clubs are
small enough for many chil-
dren to use comfortably, and
kids can use miniature golf
courses as a place to put any
lessons or advice on putting to
good use. Whats more, a
miniature golf course is more
than just golf, with creative
courses and other fun activi-
ties, so kids wont feel over-
whelmed with golf.
When kids move on from
preschool to elementary
school, some might want to tag
along with Mom or Dad to the
driving range. You should try
to avoid overwhelming kids
with too much instruction or
information. Instead, keep
things as simple as possible,
teaching them the basic swing
and encouraging them no mat-
ter how quickly they adapt.

As kids enter middle
school and approach high
school, those who are enjoy-
ing the game of golf can take
advantage of the driving
range if they havent already
begun to. A driving range
typically has markers that
indicate the distance of a reg-
ular hole, regardless of which
tee you will play from on an
actual golf course. Kids can
aim for holes at shorter dis-
tances to learn how far their
drives are going. You can
then adjust the lessons you
teach your children based on
how far youngsters can drive
the ball.
As a child gets closer to
high school, you might want
to buy the child his or her
own set of clubs. Look for
inexpensive clubs (often-
times, thrift stores or other
secondhand retailers have
clubs for sale) because grow-
ing children will eventually
grow out of their first set of
clubs. When your child finds
a set of clubs that suits him or
her, teach the proper way to
swing and consider signing up
your son or daughter for les-
sons. Those first few lessons
can prove invaluable, turning
a pastime into a passion kids
will carry with them through-
out their lives.

W
hen people are
asked how much
they pay for elec-
tricity, most have no idea.
But I bet they can tell you
what they paid for their last
tank of gas. Some people
do know what they pay,
but dont think there are
any options.
Remember the blizzard
last Halloween? What caused
most of the power outages in
the Northeast were heavy
snow-laden branches and
trees falling and knocking
down power lines. Whom do
you think is going to pay for
the millions of dollars it took
to repair everything?
What about electricity
failure due to an old grid?
Our electric grid is antiquat-
ed and falling apart in many
areas. It has to be maintained
and rebuilt. Estimates put the
cost at upwards of $5 billion
to accommodate new capaci-
ty and upgrade existing sys-
tems. Whom do you think is
going to pay for that?
Electricity rates are ris-
ing all over the country, but
the details often go unno-
ticed in statements. People
typically just pay what the
bills say they owe. Not like
you have a choice, right?
Wrong!
You do have a choice.
There are many options to
either reduce your consump-
tion or eliminate electric
bills. The obvious choice is
to install solar panels to pro-
duce your own electricity.
You see it everywhere and
probably wonder, Am I
missing out on something?
You can now get solar for no
money down, save from day
one and lock in the cost of
your electricity for 25 years
or more, typically at todays
rates. Current state and fed-
eral incentives make it the
obvious choice to save.
But not every home is
good for solar. And some
towns are downright anti-
solar, passing restrictive ordi-
nances against homeowners
who want to go solar. There
are other choices. LED light-
ing is a great option. While
prices are still high, paybacks
in high usage areas of the
home, such as kitchens and
family rooms can run as low
as two years. They last about
15 times longer than other
bulbs and dont have mercury
in them.
Motion activated light-
ing is another option. If you
have kids who constantly
leave lights on when leav-
ing a room, this
is a great solu-
tion. Activated by
movement, they can be set
to shut off after a defined
period of time.
Smart technology power
strips can be used for a com-
puter system or home the-
ater. They shut down periph-
eral devices when the com-
puter goes into sleep mode or
the home theater system is
turned off. This stops the use
of phantom energy.
Typically, these systems use
an average of $30$50 per
year in phantom energy. At
about $30 each, Smart
Strips pay back in about a
year.
So, you may not know
what you pay for electricity,
but you should know that
you do have a choice!

ftentimes, buying a
home opens up a bot-
tomless pit of opportu-
nities for projects and improve-
ments. While some homeown-
ers engage in different repairs
and fix-ups out of necessity,
many others like to freshen-up
their spaces out of personal
preference instead of need. But
even the most well-intentioned
projects can be waylaid if budg-
ets are tight.
What many homeowners
may not realize is that there are
many ways to make updates
and changes to a home that do
not require a major overhaul or
a large price tag. The following
are seven projects that wont
break the bank.
1. Move around furniture. You
may be able to change the look
of a room without spending any
money. Interior designers know
how to arrange furniture for
maximum appeal, but the aver-
age homeowner can do it, too.
Find a focal point in the room
and angle the furniture toward
it. Dont make the focal point
the television, however. Try
changing the placement of
chairs and sofas. Simply mov-
ing a curio cabinet from one
corner to another may also
make a difference.
2. Add lighting. Lighting at dif-
ferent levels in the room can
create a vibrant impact. Many
homeowners mistakenly put in

a couple of table lamps and
think that will be adequate.
However, properly illuminating
a room means varying the
lighting to create different
moods at different times. Plus,
more light can make a room
feel more welcoming.
3. Add new pillows or drapes.
Changing a few aspects of a
room can give it an entirely
new look. If you want to add a
splash of color but dont know
what to do, think about incor-
porating some new throw pil-
lows or change the curtains.
An accessory here and there in
a bright color also can incorpo-
rate a new hue without it being
overwhelming.
4. Change knobs or small
accents. Give a room a new
look by focusing on the small
details. Switch out cabinet
knobs for something updated
and modern. Take inventory of
wall outlets and light switches
and think about selecting new
ones that coordinate with your
home decor.
5. Use plants. Empty corners or
spots youre not certain how to
fill may benefit from a plant.
Plants are inexpensive ways to
add instant color and visual
appeal to a room. Plus, having
live plants can help improve
indoor air by filtering out con-
taminants. A home with plants
also feels more cozy.
6. Hang new wall art. It may
be time to look at your photos
and artwork and make a few
adjustments. Finding new
prints to hang could instantly
change a rooms ambience.

of money on professional pho-

give us the perfect chance
to upgrade all aspects of a
home's interior, including your
home insulation. Wall insula-
tion may not be as exciting as
visible upgrades, but the latest
products can single-handedly
give you lower fuel costs with
far improved air quality, com-
fort and energy efficiency. In
demand right now, for example,
is a user-friendly method called
Nudura RetroFit Insulation
Technology, a system for filling
foundation walls, inner and
outer walls, as well as flat, or
cathedral ceilings. This do-it-
yourself product is a shiplap sys-
tem of expanded polystyrene
(EPS), which allows large 4 X 8
foot sheets of foam to be
installed without any gaps for
air leakage. Take a look in the
home owner section of
www.nudura.com. Made from
recyclable material, it is easy to
cut, easy to install, and the per-
formance value is up to R-14.
Drywall can then be attached
directly to the embedded fas-
tening strip allowing the elec-
trical wiring to be easily run.
tography, either. Grab your
camera and take a few close-
up shots of flowers or take in a
landscape scenery. Many of
todays home printers can pro-
duce professional-quality
prints in minutes.
7. Try a new coat of paint. After
youve exhausted other
avenues, choosing a new paint
color may be the new look you
desire. Painting is one of the
least expensive yet most dra-
matic methods of changing a
homes interior. With dozens of
hues to choose from, and new
apps that enable you to take
snapshots of things in nature or
in your life and match them up
to a paint color, you will have
scores of opportunities to
explore fresh new colors for
your home.
When you get inspired to
make improvements to the
home but fear how much it may
take out of your wallet, consid-
er inexpensive tricks that can
induce a big wow factor.

T
here are so many dif-
ferent reasons to
throw a party. From
birthdays to bar mitzvahs, the
reasons to celebrate are many.
Some people are seasoned
experts at planning and exe-
cuting the perfect party,
while others are more appre-
hensive about hosting.
However, with a little guid-
ance, anyone can successfully
host a memorable party.
Whether youre plan-
ning an intimate cocktail
party for a few friends or a
large-scale event for a bap-
tism or anniversary, some
simple tips can reduce the
stress involved in being a
party host.
Step 1: Create a budget
Planning the perfect event
starts with establishing a
clear budget. Above all else,
setting a firm budget will help
set limits as to what and how
much you can buy for the
event. It will also then help
you make your lists and
details accordingly.
Be sure to list the main
components of the party first:
including food, beverages and
invitations. Its important to
allocate more of your budget
to those items and use the
remaining funds to decorate
and set the mood.
Step 2: Decide on a location
Knowing where you will be
having your party usually
dictated by how much you can
spend will help pave the way
for other decisions. For exam-
ple, if you are having a party at
a restaurant, all you may need
to handle are providing favors
and bringing a cake. But if you
are renting out a room or hav-
ing the party at home, your
workload will increase. There
are many different places you
can have a party, even some
unconventional locales.
Therefore, if you are coming
up with roadblocks based on
the cost of venues, think out-
side the box. Look to church-
es, restaurant back rooms or
even schools for an empty
room.
Step 3: Make your shopping
list
Once youve established
your budget and location, its
time to make your shopping
list. List all of the foods you
plan to make and then sepa-
rately list the ingredients that
need to go into each recipe.
Purchase the necessary ingre-
dients if you are having
mixed drinks. An easier idea
is to simply offer soft drinks,
wine and beer because guests
can serve themselves. You
can shop for nonperishable
items, like utensils and deco-
rations, early on. Save perish-
able foods for a few days
before the party.
Step 4: Get help
Hosting a party can be a lot
of work, so it can benefit you
to have a friend or family
member lend a hand. Perhaps
he or she can work on party
favors while youre putting
the finishing touches on the
meal or the dessert. If the
budget allows, some people
like to hire a service to wait
on guests and cleans up dur-
ing and after the party. This
