2012-2013 Calendar

Theme of the Year:

The logo of the Year of Faith is composed of a square, bordered field on which a boat, symbolizing the Church, is represented as sailing on waves. The main mast of the boat is a cross and the sails are composed of the trigram of Christ (IHS). The background to the sails is a sun which, associated with the trigram, refers also to the Eucharist.

Liturgical Year Color Key

This calendar is color coded according to the Liturgical Calendar, indicating various Liturgical Seasons and Feasts.

Pentecost / Martyrs Feast Days / Liturgical Feasts

The color red on the Liturgical Calendar indicates the Memorials and Feast Days of certain Holy Martyrs who gave their lives because of their belief in Christ. Red also indicates the celebration of Palm Sunday, Good Friday and Pentecost.

Ordinary Time
Ordinary Time begins after the feast of the Baptism of the Lord, after the Christmas Season, and is celebrated until Ash Wednesday. The season is continued after Corpus Christi, and lasts until the feast of Christ the King, before Advent. Many various Feasts, Solemnities and Memorials of the Lord and of Saints are celebrated throughout Ordinary Time. Far from being ordinary, Ordinary Time can be a special time of growth in our relationships with Christ and His Church.

Advent
The Season of Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and lasts through the afternoon of Christmas Eve. The word Advent means coming and we prepare and await, during this season, both for the celebration of Jesus Christs coming at Christmas, as well as for His coming again.

Lent
The Season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts for six weeks, ending just before the Paschal Triduum and the celebration of the Lords Supper on Holy Thursday. Lent is a season of penance and is characterized by the practice of almsgiving, fasting and prayer.

Easter / Christmas / Memorials of the Lord and of Saints

On the Liturgical Calendar, the color white indicates the Season of Christmas, the Season of Easter, important Solemnities, and the celebration of various memorials of the Lord and of certain saints.

What are Solemnities, Feasts, and Memorials?

Celebrations, according to the importance assigned to them, are hence distinguished one from another and termed: Solemnity, Feast, Memorial. Solemnities are counted among the most important days The celebration of the two greatest Solemnities, Easter and the Nativity, is extended over eight days. Other Solemnities include the celebrations of Christ the King and of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Feasts generally refer to more universally important Saints, such are the Evangelists, or to celebrations regarding the life of Christ, such as His Presentation at the Temple as a child (February 2nd). Memorials tend to refer to saints of more specific importance - such as to a specific country, region or religious order. While the celebration of these memorials during the weekday Mass is often optional, they are listed in this calendar for the purpose of personal devotion and to encourage your family to learn about them and grow in holiness with these remarkable men and women, our brothers and sisters in the faith.
Quotes from the Apostolic Letter Motu Proprio Approval of the Universal Norms on the Liturgical Year and the new General Roman Calendar by Pope Paul VI.

Memory Challenge of the Year

Learn the 73 books of the Bible! Each member of our Family Formation families (adults included!) is invited to memorize the names of all 73 books of the Bible. You will be receiving an audio in October that will provide an unforgettable tune to help in your memorization. Opportunities will be provided each month for people to recite them at any time during the year, and anyone who is able to do it will receive a certificate of accomplishment and their name posted on the bulletin board for everyone to see!
