Township
discusses
national

By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Tabernacle Sun
The possibility of bringing
members of AmeriCorps to Tab-
ernacle was discussed at the Sept.
24 township committee meeting.
Colonel William Lowe, the
emergency management coordi-
nator, originally brought the idea
of AmeriCorps to the committee.
The members [of Ameri-
Corps] will live in town for a
month or two and do community
projects, said Mayor Richard
Franzen. Colonel Lowe wants
them to come here. We would
house them in the new EMS
building, and theyd help do some
cleaning up at the ball fields,
cemeteries and the Pepper
House.

Township has applied for services
located on 134 New Road, con-
tains multiple rooms that the vol-
unteers would stay in and use as
the headquarters for the duration
of their services.
According to the AmeriCorps
website, AmeriCorps is a national
network of programs that en-
gages more than 70,000 Ameri-
cans each year in intensive serv-
ice to meet critical needs in com-
munities throughout the nation.
AmeriCorps offers several
ways to get involved, from part-
time local service programs to
full-time residential programs.
Members receive guidance and
training so they can make a con-
tribution that suits their talents,
interests and availability.
The township has applied for
their services.
Well find out in two months
or so whether theyll be here or
not, said Franzen.
Additionally, Lowe will be
heading a CERT team-sponsored
event to train emergency re-
sponse teams in the area in an ef-
fort to educate local rescue
squads in large animal rescue.
Its a two-day event. There will
be participants from Bass River,
Tabernacle and Shamong and a
few other towns in the area, said
Franzen. Its to learn how to res-
cue large animals in an emer-
gency situation. There are times
in our town when someones cow
or horse gets loose and they need
to know how to handle it.
In other news, the committee
approved the water management
plan. Additionally, a raffle license
was approved for the Burlington
County Feral Cat Initiative.
According to Franzen, a resi-
dents concern about the age of a
neighbor in the Allenwood sec-
tion of town were addressed.
A resident voiced concern
about another residents
[younger] age possibly living in
the community, and breaking the
townships ordinance stating

F
ewer young adults are living at
home. Why does that matter?
According to economists deci-
phering recently released Census data,
it means that the Great Recession
might be over. For real, this time.
The Associated Press talked to a
number of experts when the data came
out a couple of weeks ago. While none
were turning cartwheels over the state
of the economy, they pointed to a num-
ber of factors that indicate that things
are getting better.
We all know that, technically, the re-
cession ended a few years ago. Yet, we
all see that unemployment remains
high and the housing market has been
really slow to show dramatic improve-
ment.
The new Census data, though, high-
lights a few things that perhaps are
more meaningful when it comes to
measuring economic strength.
One of those factors is the number of
young adults living at home. When
that number goes down, as it did in
2011 to 13.6 percent from 14.2 percent,
its a good thing. The experts The AP
spoke to said the trend indicates more
younger adults are more confident
about finding a job or attending a col-
lege.
There was more good news, too.
More people were moving to new hous-
es and towns. Poverty is slowing, too.
Indeed, one look at the better than 8
percent unemployment rate snuffs any
thought of a red-hot economy. But, if
people are feeling better about the fu-
ture, and acting on those feelings by
getting back into the swing of things,
its not only a good sign, its a true
boost to the economy. They likely will
spend more, for example, which will
help to create jobs.
While Mom and Dad might have
mixed feelings about waving goodbye
to their adult children, they should
know that, according to the experts,
its a good sign. It means that, perhaps,
after years of stagnation and reces-
sion, better economic times are getting
closer.
in our opinion
So long
More parents are waving goodbye to
their adult children, who are leaving the
nest to head out on their own.
According to the experts, thats an indi-
cation that the Great Recession finally
might be over.

Seneca High School will be holding its
first-ever Walk Under the Stars, a Relay for
Life event through the American Cancer
Society on Oct. 12.
At the end of the school year, the Lenape
Regional High School District chooses a
book for One Book, One School for summer
reading program. This past summer, stu-
dents read The Fault in Our Stars, by John
Green, a story about teenagers battling can-
cer and learning about love.
Every school in the district selects one
book, and all students and staff members
need to read the book, said Beth Strittmat-
ter, English department coordinator and co-
chair of One Book, One School said. Its an
emotional story about cancer and two
bright teenagers. Under the tragedy is a
love story.
The New York Times Bestselling book
follows two Indianapolis teenagers, Hazel
Lancaster and Augustus Waters, who meet
at a Cancer Kid and Support Group, and
eventually fall in love.
Everybody in the school reads the one
book. This year we read Our Fault in the
Stars, which discusses cancer. Its an im-
portant topic that affects so many people
that we wanted to open it up for discussion
for the students, said Kathy Donoghue,
media specialist and co-chair of One Book,
One School.
Were looking to promote reading. With
this One Book, One School, students are
more likely to do it because they want to be
part of the discussion, said Donoghue.
Last summer, students and staff read
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
and added a Hunger Games-like competi-
tion into the mix of book-inspired events.
Last year, the Hunger Games was so
popular, we wanted to do it again. We want-
ed to inspire them to do something for oth-
ers, said Donoghue.
Everything is centered around the
book, and we thought this would be some-
thing thats unique, said Strittmatter.
Strittmatter and co-chair Donoghue as a
team with 10 other members, made up of
students and staff, began putting the event
together in the beginning of the year. Since
then, student involvement has been contin-
ually increasing.

Students must stay for full event

Were doing it through the
American Cancer Society, and the
kids are just signing up now, said
Strittmatter. The event is strictly
open to students and faculty, how-
ever donations will be accepted
from parents and members of the
community.
Its just for Seneca people, but
were asking for the support of
parents, family and neighbors of
the kids to give back as well, said
Donoghue. The event will take
place on Oct. 12 from 6 p.m., fol-
lowing the school day, until 6 a.m.
the next morning, with no sleep
in between.
Were going to have a walk-a-
thon outside on the track. Hope-
fully its not too cold, said
Donoghue. We have so many
things planned for the event, in-
cluding arts and crafts, a yoga in-
structor, a kickboxing instructor,
bands and hopefully a bonfire and
so much more. Theyll be busy,
hopefully inspired and raise
money for the American Cancer
Society.
According to a letter sent to stu-
dents, all students and staff who
participate in Walk Under the
Stars will have the option of form-
ing a team. Teams can create their
own names, t-shirts, flags, glow
sticks and banners to promote
their group. Each team will also
be assigned a designated area in-
side the track to set up tents,
lawn chairs, blankets and picnic
items.
Students will not be able to
come and go from the event and
are expected to stay for the full 12
hours, much like a lock-in event.
An additional event inspired by
The Fault in Our Stars will take
place in November, during
Senecas pep rally. Students will
be raising money and donating
their hair.
We have a pep rally, and at the
end were cutting hair and send-
ing it to Pantenes Beautiful
Lengths. Were going to make the
kids that signed up stars through-
out the month of November, said
Donoghue. So far, 40 students have
signed up to cut a minimum of
eight inches of their hair or raise
money and shave their heads.
Members of the staff have signed
up for haircuts and donations, as
well.
Both Donoghue and Strittmat-
ter arent sure of a second walk-a-
thon, but have hopes for a success-
ful first-time event.
We dont know how successful
its going to be, so I guess it de-
pends on how successful were
going to be this year, said
Donoghue Were trying to make
it a spectacular event theyll
find memorable in their school
year.
Were very excited; its a first
time event in our district. The
kids are really looking forward to
the event, Strittmatter said.
Were hoping the kids find a lot
of value in this.

Public invited to view exhibit
the sales to care for patients and
families.
Field of Flowers and Garden
Entrance are on display in loving
memory of my father, Albert G.
Lyons, who died of cancer two
years ago, said artist Larry
Lyons of Woodbury. My family
will never forget the extraordi-
nary care and assistance that a
hospice team in Pennsylvania
provided my father and my fami-
ly. They ensured that his final few
days were comfortable and digni-
fied.
Photographer Susan Carson of
Cinnaminson added, I have been
closely involved with the passing
of two dear friends who died in
the extraordinary care of hospice
caregivers. Hospice provides a
caring and compassionate serv-
ice, comfort and information dur-
ing a very stressful and sad time.
Carson chose Fingers Crossed
for this exhibit because its
cheerful color gives a reminder of
bright times and warm em-
braces.
Samaritan was a kind helper
to my late wife in her final
weeks, said Ralph Berglund of
Medford. He chose to display two
tulip photographs because of the
pleasant and calming feeling they
will give hospice patients and
families.
When Amy Golden proposed
that our camera club provide a
collection of photographs to hang
in the Samaritan Inpatient Hos-
pice Center Art Gallery for the
benefit of the patients families, it
made me think how much my
wife and I would have appreciated
such a display when her 92-year
old mother was going through a
similar fate. Since then, we have
witnessed two more friends pass
away in similar circumstances,
also with nothing like this for
family and friends. I am more
than happy to take part in this
photographic exhibit, said John
Costello of Marlton.
Local artists from the SJCC on
display at the Samaritan Inpa-
tient Hospice Center include:
Amy Golden of Voorhees, Bon-
nie Rovere of Shamong, Denise
Bush of Tabernacle; Elaine
Walsh of Southampton, Frank
Sauerwald of Woodbury, John
Costello of Marlton, Larry Lyons
of Woodbury, Mike Pillows of
Browns Mills, Patricia Worley of
Medford Lakes, Ralph Berglund
of Medford, Reginald Wickham of
Mount Laurel and Susan Carson
of Cinnaminson.
A minimum of 15 percent of
the proceeds of exhibit sales will
benefit Samaritan patients and
families. The public is invited to
view the exhibit seven days a
week from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
South Jersey Camera Club
(SJCC) was organized to promote
the art and science of photogra-
phy. Among its goals is the desire
to unite others in sharing similar
interests, to exchange ideas
and photographic expertise and
to enhance the skills of club
members. The Samaritan Inpa-
tient Hospice Center Gallery is lo-
cated on the second floor of Vir-
tua Memorial, 175 Madison Av-
enue located in Mount Holly.
For more information about
the show or Samaritan Health-
care & Hospice services, please
call (800) 229-8183 or www.Samari-
tanHealthcareNJ.org.
Scout troop working on Silver Award
Girl Scout Troop No. 23953 is
going for Silver!
Girls from Tabernacle Girl
Scout Troop No. 23953 are busy
working on their Silver Award.
The Girl Scout Silver Award is
the highest award a Cadet Girl
Scout can earn. Girls must com-
plete a 50-hour service project
that leaves a lasting impact on the
community.
All girls in Troop No. 23953 are
in eighth grade at Olson Middle
School.
This week at Olson Middle
School, eighth-grade cadet Megan
Rulon worked on her hearing-im-
paired awareness program. She is
bringing attention to people
(specifically children in our
school district) who have hearing
impairments. Megan has made
posters, is teaching some simple
sign language phrases to the stu-
dents and teachers, and has post-
ed the ASL alphabet and posted
pictures for signing the various
subjects including
math, science and art across the
school.
Briana Schmidt and Kelci
Prokapus topic focuses on child-
hood obesity. They are running
an event on Oct. 7 at Pricketts
Mill from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. (rain
date Oct. 14).
Not all children are interested
in organized sports but every
child wants to play. Kids ages 5-12
are welcome to come to the free
event that will consist of organ-
ized games, nutritional facts for
parents, healthy snacks and door
prizes.
For Fire Prevention Week held
Oct. 7 through 13, Cadets Sarah
Ludwig and Caitlin Ludwig are
taking on the issue of having resi-
dents of Tabernacle properly dis-
play their house numbers so re-
sponse teams can easily find the
home in case of an emergency.
They will be speaking at schools
and at the Medford Farms Fire
Company Open House on Oct. 9.
We are so proud of our girls
said Troop Leaders Rose Ludwig
and Leslie Schmidt. They have
been working so hard on these
events and are gaining great lead-
ership skills that they will carry
with them in life. Both Taberna-
cle schools have been so gracious
in helping these girls along the
way. We couldnt have done it
without the help of Dr. Patterson
and Mrs. Grosser in addition to
some of the teachers at the school
as well.
