Migrate to IBM Tivoli Workload Automation easily and confidently

IT organizations are increasingly adopting workload automation to improve business flexibility, SLA management, resource virtualization, and cost control. They are also shifting more of the production workload from traditional data center infrastructures to the cloud. It is no surprise that many organizations are planning to reengineer or replace their batch workload automation to address new challenges. Gartner inquiries continue to reflect that 70% of the business processes within organizations are near real time or batch. Workload automation solutions continue to evolve to support this environment, as the IT application and platform landscape evolves toward providing a foundation for accelerating business change in onpremises and cloud environments. Since 2008, job-scheduling solutions are increasingly moving toward workload automation, reflecting the changing demands of moving from a largely static batch-processing environment to a more dynamic, policy-driven automation platform. This platform provides policy-driven automation services to multiple applications. The IBM Tivoli Workload Automation family of products helps IT deliver on these requirements. To help simplify workload management for both distributed and mainframe environments, Tivoli Workload Automation offers centralized, end-to-end automation across the workload spectrum. An intuitive interface and graphical views empower development and operational teams to collaborate and quickly solve complex problems. Over 2,000 organizations around the world utilize Tivoli Workload Automation to provide the backbone for automated workload management and monitoring. In this document, you learn how IBM can transform your batch workload automation from a static, platform-based view of production workloads to a flexible, service-driven environment. IBM Tivoli Workload Automation includes both calendar and event-based workload automation and workload balancing.

IBM Tivoli Workload Automation implementations

IBMs software migration teams offer exceptional expertise and tools for simplifying and modernizing software environments. Your organization can achieve significant savings while extending its infrastructure to support advanced workloads. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas achieved significant improvements by working with the IBM Software Migration Team to replace its legacy scheduling software environment with IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler for z/OS. These improvements included: Optimized space utilization and saved administration time with the ability to monitor and manage storage elements from the mainframe environment Reduced costs by improving debugging capabilities and input/output efficiency and decreasing DASD consumption and processing times Policy-driven architecture with finite disk-retention cycles rather than batch-driven management that requires periodic maintenance A fault-tolerant, high-performance solution that satisfies service level agreements (SLAs) Improved overall IT administration and reporting capabilities Increased system security Robust job restart and rerun capabilities

About the practice

The IBM software migration team employs tools that support the migration of many products scheduling workflow definitions to Tivoli Workload Automation, including: Computer Associates CA-7, JobTrac, ESP, Unicenter and AutoSys ASG Cortex-Plan, Zeke BMC Control-M Help/Systems Robot/SCHEDULE Redwood Cronacle UC4 Automation Engine UNIX cron Microsoft Windows Task Scheduler These tools coupled with a proven migration methodology provide a fast and cost efficient conversion.

The five-phase process

A lead migration specialist is assigned to the project at the beginning of the migration. The primary role of the specialist is to ensure that you have smooth and successful migration to IBM Tivoli Workload Automation. The migration is completed in five phases.

Analyze
The first step towards a successful migration is to analyze and assess the job scheduling environment. This phase helps to identify the migration issues unique to a specific environment. During the analysis phase, you determine requirements and establish specific criteria for a

TIVOLI SOFTWARE FROM IBM successful migration. You also establish mapping rules for source scheduling conditions, naming conventions, commands, and other data sources. At the end of the analysis phase, an assessment report is created and delivered to you. The assessment report contains estimates of the resources, time, and cost needed for a successful migration to Tivoli Workload Automation, the proposed Tivoli Workload Automation topology architecture, scheduling object conversion sizings (both automatic and manually converted), and overall project sizings.

Deploy
In this phase, IBM Tivoli Workload Automation is deployed, configured, and tested in a non-production environment. We install and test the migration tools, and test their deployment. This phase completes with a Tivoli Workload Automation environment running and scheduling objects conversion tools installed and ready to use.

Define
As the migration project moves forward, obsolete scheduling objects are removed, and your job scheduling data is filtered through the migration tools. The migration tools minimize the manual effort involved in the conversion process. Testing throughout the process is defined and run. Exception-based workflows that must be managed manually are described during this phase. A pilot workflow is defined for testing purposes, and tests of sample converted data are run. This phase ends with a successful test of converted data.

Act
In this phase, you translate source schedules, definitions, and scripts to Tivoli Workload Automation objects. The converted objects are loaded into the Tivoli Workload Automation database. This conversion can be done incrementally, or all at once. Optionally, job execution can be simulated by Tivoli Workload Automation, running in parallel with the production workloads. Workloads in source and target scheduling tools are bridged, and reported to discover and missing or added workloads. Finally, workload definitions are removed from the source scheduler.

Learn
A review process confirms that all items are complete. Our migration specialist works with your staff to ensure that the actual promotion to Tivoli Workload Automation is uneventful.

4 IBM TIVOLI WORKLOAD AUTOMATION

IBM TIVOLI WORKLOAD AUTOMATION We create a custom regression plan before promoting Tivoli Workload Automation to production, in case unforeseen issues are uncovered. With the regression plan, you can revert to the pre-promotion scheduler while issues are addressed. Product education is a part of any successful migration. We take a modular approach to educating your staff. For staff that requires a broad range of skills using Tivoli Workload Automation, we recommend training session within the first week of the migration. It is suggested that your core scheduling team attend IBM Tivoli Workload Automation training. Our migration specialist helps you determine when additional training might be appropriate.
