The life of Christ The bloodline Moses to Psalms

Tracking along with a quick overview of Jesus in the Old Testament, working our way to the gospel accounts. We have worked our way to Deut. We followed Moses in the wilderness, and the ROCK that followed them.. as you remember Moses cannot enter in the land but Joshua can.

Its a sad verse but it is telling..

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Joshua 1:1-After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, it came to pass that the LORD spoke to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses assistant, saying:2 Mose My servant is s dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, to the land which I am giving to themthe children of Israel. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The first word of this verse, Now, should be translated And, which connects it with the final chapter of Deuteronomy. And is a connective. The minute a speaker says and, he has to keep talking because and connects something that has gone before with something that is coming. This supports the theory that Deuteronomy 34 was written by Joshua.1 ----------Leaders dont lead forever, even godly leaders like Moses. There comes a time in every ministry when God calls for a new beginning with a new generation and new leadership. Except for Joshua and Caleb, the old generation of Jews had perished during the nations wanderings in the wilderness; and Joshua was commissioned to lead the new generation into a new challenge: entering and conquering the Promised Land. buries His workmen, but His work goes on. 2 God It was God who had chosen Joshua, and everybody in Israel knew that he was their new leader.3 If we would have written this we would have said Moses my servant is dead, lets rap it up and close the doors. Billy Graham- God is going to carry on his work,,,, no one is indispensable. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------Joshua, Cross the Jordan, looking over into Jericho Joshua 5:13-15 Joshua has moved the troops for the coming battle, There are times when each of us must get alone with God in a special way. Usually those times come just before a big decision in our lives. Joshua went to a hill overlooking Jericho and began to contemplate the conquest of that great fortress city. As he was there alone communing with God and planning strategy To spend time alone with God, so important as a Christian. 1J. There are times when each of us must get alone with God in a special way. Usually those times come just before a big decision in our lives. Joshua went to a hill overlooking Jericho and began to contemplate the conquest of that great fortress city. As he was there alone communing with God and planning strategy4 Right before a big decision, when you are up against the wall,, that is were Joshua is, he was told to cross over the Jordan, he did, he knows that he is facing a fight and the Jordan has just refilled behind him he has not place to turn but to God , If God is not in this he is in big trouble.. It seemed obvious that the next step would be the capture of Jericho. But since no divine message of instruction had yet come to Joshua (as before the crossing of the Jordan), he went out to reconnoiter the seemingly impregnable city. Was Joshua perplexed as he viewed the secure walls of Jericho? The spies reported at Kadesh Barnea that the cities of Canaan were "large, with walls up to the sky" (Deut. 1:28). Despite Joshuas long military experience he had never led an attack on a fortified city that was prepared for a long siege. In fact, of all the walled cities in Palestine, Jericho was probably the most invincible. There was also the question of armaments. Israels army had no siege engines, no battering rams, no catapults, and no moving towers. Their only weapons were slings, arrows, and spearswhich were like straws against the walls of Jericho. Joshua knew the battle of Jericho must be won because, now that they had crossed the Jordan, Israels troops had no place to which they could retreat. Further, they could not bypass the city because that would leave their women, children, goods, and cattle at Gilgal exposed to certain destruction.5

I have been to the site of Jericho many times, today as you look at Jericho, you see a "TELL" there is a retaining wall around the base. That wall is 12-15ft. high, on top of that are mudbrick was 6ft thick and about 20-26ft high, as parts of the wall while you are standing at the base it is total about 46ft. higher than a 4 story building.. they found homes on top of this and there is a section that did not fall down,,,, Rahab,,,, above that was another mud brick wall that was also 20-26ft high.. how you going to get past all this. The walls fell out..6 Joshua 6:20 20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city. The falls fell and they ran up the ramp that it created, straight into the city, it made a perfect ramp.. then it says that .. Joshua 6:24 24 But they burned the city and all that was in it with fire. Only the silver and gold, and the vessels of bronze and iron, they put into the treasury of the house of the LORD. What you see today without looking very hard to a huge burn layer.. Within the upper wall was an area of approximately six acres, while the total area of the upper city and fortification system was 50% larger, or about nine acres. Based on the archaeologists rule of thumb of 200 persons per acre, the population of the upper city would have been about 1,200. However, from excavations carried out by a German team in the first decade of this century, we know that people were also living on the embankment between the upper and lower city walls. In addition, those Canaanites living in surrounding villages would have fled to Jericho for safety. Thus, we can assume that there were several thousand people inside the walls when the Israelites came against the city.7 ---------Joshua going out the night before to survey the city, and there he meets someone. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, You for us or for our adversaries? Are -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Whos side are you on ??

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------14 So He said, but as Commander of the army of the LORD I have now come. And No, Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped, and said to Him, What does my Lord say to His servant? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------No... its not who's side am I on, its who side are you on.. GOD IS ON OUR SIDE.. I am no Gods side. There is a big difference. It is reported that Abraham Lincoln once stated: do not boast that God is on my side, I I humbly pray that I am on Gods side.8 --------He did not come to HELP but to LEAD. Without Me you can do nothing (John 15:5). -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15 Then the Commander of the LORDs army said to Joshua, Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy. And Joshua did so. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Loose thy shoe from off thy foot ... The practice of putting them off before entering a temple, a palace, or even the private apartments of a house, was, and is universal in the East. The rationale of it being that the shoes or sandals have dust or dirt attaching to them. this is NO ordinary angel He is called LORD (or, Yahweh) in Jos.6:2 ( there is no chapter breaks in the original ) --------------------------------------This cannot be a ordinary Angel .. ANGELS ARE NOT TO BE WORSHIPPED If this was simply an angel, Joshua might have been rebuked. Revelation 22:8-9 8 Now I, John, saw and heard these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel who showed me these things.9 Then he said to me,

This quote is all over the internet , I can not find its origin. But it's a good quote

that you do not do that. For I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren the See prophets, and of those who keep the words of this book. Worship God. But when Joshua worships Him, he is only told that he should take off his shoes because he's on holy ground. (Exod. 3:5).

Christ in JoshuaAlthough there are no direct messianic prophecies in the book, Joshua is clearly a type of Christ. His name Yeshua ( Yahweh Is Salvation) is the Hebrew equivalent of the name Jesus. In his role of triumphantly leading his people into their possessions, he foreshadows the One who will bring many sons to glory (Heb. 2:10). Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ (2 Cor. 2:14; see Rom. 8:37). Joshua succeeds Moses and wins the victory unreached by Moses. Christ will succeed the Mosaic Law and win the victory unreachable by the Law (see John 1:17; Rom. 8:24; Gal. 3:2325; Heb. 7:1819). Commander of the army of the LORD (5:1315) met by Joshua is evidently a The preincarnate appearance of Christ (cf. 5:15 with Ex. 3:5). Rahabs scarlet cord (2:21) portrays safety through the blood (Heb. 9:1922); and amazingly, this gentile woman is found in Christs genealogy (Matt. 1:5).9

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------AGAIN WE ARE ONLY HITTING THE HIGHLIGHTS. Moving past Joshua, Judges there is a man named Manoah, his wife was barren, we find his story in Judges 13, he meets the Angel of the Lord.. whos name is wonderful or at least the Angels says its is wonderful. They would have a son,, Samson.. -----------RUTH- Kinsman redeemer - beautiful picture of JESUS ----------9

In the psalms there are those known as the messianic Psalms. They point to Jesus.. For sake of time I want to look at 3 of these in order.. -------------------------------------------Psalm 22 To the chief Musician upon Aijeleth Shahar, A Psalm of David. Aijeleth ayeleth doe, deer, hind Shahar shachar dawn Lit., upon the hind of the dawn. Probably the name of a tune. The psalm is typical of the sufferings of Messiah and is one of the most quoted psalms in the NT. Keep in mind this Psalm was written by David, somewhere around 1,000 BC.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me? Why are You so far from helping Me, And from the words of My groaning? -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------forsaken azab (Qal) to leave; to depart from, leave behind, leave, let alone; to leave, abandon, forsake, neglect This is the line that Jesus spoke while hanging on the cross.

(Mat 27:45-50 KJV) Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. {46} And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? {47} Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. {48} And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. {49} The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him. {50} Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. Some of the people around the cross heard Jesus speak these words, but apparently some of them didnt understand too clearly what He was saying. Why was Jesus saying this? First I believe Jesus was calling attention to Psalm 22. A synagogue leader would tell the congregation which song they were to sing by calling out the first line of the Psalm. I believe that in a way, Jesus was telling the people around Him to check out Psalm 22.

Secondly Jesus was fulfilling the prophecies written of in Psalm 22, including this first line, being forsaken of God. It was while on the cross that God the Father was pouring out the sins of the world upon His on Son so that His Son could pay the price for these sins. (Isa 53:4-6 KJV) Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. {5} But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. {6} All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Jesus had known close intimate fellowship with God from since eternity past. (John 1:1-2 KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2} The same was in the beginning with God. As Jesus hung on the cross and God heaped our sins upon Jesus, Jesus experienced for the first time what it meant to be forsaken by God as God turned His back on the Son due to our sin. The most poignant verse in the entire psalm is the first, and this is also the most disturbing section. For here the suffering One cries out to God, believing that he has been forsaken by him, asking why he has been forsaken, and asserting that God is silent. He receives no answer. The idea that Jesus could be forsaken by God has been so disturbing to so many people that various theories have been invented to explain it. Some have supposed that Jesus was referring to the psalm only to call attention to it, as if to say that what he was suffering was what the psalm describes. Others have argued that Jesus felt forsaken, when in fact he was not. In the final outcome, of course, Jesus was not forsaken. This is what the psalm as a whole shows. Besides, we know that the crucifixion was followed by the resurrection. All this aside, however, I do not hesitate to say that, according to the teaching of the New Testament, Jesus was indeed forsaken by God while he bore the sin of his people on the cross. This is the very essence of the atonementJesus bearing our hell in order that we might share his heaven. To be forsaken means to have the light of Gods countenance and the sense of his presence eclipsed, which is what happened to Jesus as he bore the wrath of God against sin for us. How could this happen? How could one member of the eternal Trinity turn his back on another member of the Trinity? I do not know. I cannot explain it. But I believe that this is what the Bible teaches, so great was the love of God for us and so great was the price Jesus willingly paid to save us from our iniquities.11

Boice, J. M. (2005). Psalms (Pbk. ed.) (193194). Grand Rapids, Mich.: Baker Books. 9

-----------------------------He understands When you sin and experience guilt Jesus understands. Though He never sinned, Hes experienced guilt, the guilt of the world. Not just the guilt of one particular sin. Not just the guilt of ten years of backsliding. Not just the guilt of your entire life. Hes experienced the heaviness of the whole worlds sins. Hes experienced what it means to be cut off from God. When you feel alone Jesus understands. For His entire life, Jesus knew what it was to have intimate fellowship with the Father. He knew He was never alone. Yet at that moment when the Father turned His back on Jesus, Jesus experienced complete, total loneliness. His disciples had all fled from Him and now even the Father turned His back. (Heb 4:15-16 NLT) This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same temptations we do, yet he did not sin. {16} So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2 O My God, I cry in the daytime, but You do not hear; And in the night season, and am not silent. 3 But You are holy, Enthroned in the praises of Israel. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This was not the cry of a complaining servant but the sob of a broken-hearted child asking, Where is my father when I need him? As David prayed for help, he wondered why God didnt answer him. After all, He was a God of compassion who was concerned about His people, and He was a holy God who practiced justice. Even more, Israel was Gods special covenant nation, and He was e nthroned upon the praises of Israel (v. 3, NASB; see 80:1; 99:1; Isa. 66:12). Only Israel had Gods divine law and could worship Him in a way acceptable to Him (John 4:2124). Many times in the past, the Lord had kept His covenant promises to Israel and fought battles, so why was He distant now? Compassion, justice, and the sacred covenant were strong arguments for Gods interventionbut He was silent.12 Where are you God when it hurts,, he would say to us. I AM RIGHT HERE WITH YOU AND FOR YOU... inhabitest yashab to dwell, remain, sit, abide (Psa 22:3 NLT) Yet you are holy. The praises of Israel surround your throne. Wiersbe, W. W. (2004). (Psa 22:3 NASB) Yet Thou art holy, O Thou who art enthroned upon the praises of Israel. ----------------------------------------------Presence in Praise It may be that this phrase praises of Israel is just a figure of speech for the the sanctuary, where Israel praised the Lord. But I wonder if there isnt a literal sense to this as well. I believe there is a sense in which Gods presence is especially evident when we praise Him. Jesus said, (John 4:23-24 KJV) But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. {24} God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. God is actually looking for people who are going to give Him worship in spirit and in truth. James wrote, (James 4:8a KJV) Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. I think that if you are truly seeking to give God honor and praise, you will find yourself very close to Him. ------------

Our friend Russ taff sings Praise the lord When you're up against a struggle That's shattered all your dreams And your hopes been cruely crushed By Satan's manifested schemes. And you feel the urge within you To submit to earthyly fears Don't let the faith your standing in Seem to disappear 11

CHORUS: Praise the Lord.He will work for those who praise him Praise the Lord. For our God inhabits praisee. Praise the Lord. And those chains that seem to bind you Serve only to remind you. As they fall powerless behind you. When you praise him. Satan is a liar and he wants to make us think That we are paupers, when we know ourselves We're children of the king. So lift up the mighty shield of faith For the battle must be won Remember Jesus Christ has risen So the works already done. --Praise HIM when you dont want to. Praise him when you cant. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4 Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them.5 They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------But listen again! The Savior is still speaking to His Father, reminding Him that the patriarchs were never forsaken. Their believing cries for help never went unanswered. Not once were they disappointed when they cried for deliverance. In spite of their sin and waywardness, God never had occasion to forsake them. That sentence was reserved for the spotless Lamb of God!13 God can be trusted, even in the storm. In fact GOD PUSHES US INTO STORMS.. We will see this when we go to the life of Christ. Jesus tells them to get into a boat and then without them, alto he is with them , watching them as a loving father, he sends them right into a storm. This is the only place some lessons can be taught. Trust in despair Even though the Psalmist is describing this horrendous difficulty, he seems to be struggling to still trust God.

MacDonald, W., & Farstad, A. (1997). Believer's Bible Commentary : Old and New Testaments. Nashville: Thomas Nelson. 12

13

I think this is the essence of faith, to be able to trust God in the darkest moments, at the times that seem to make the least sense. (Heb 11:1 NLT) What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see. Faith is what pleases God (Heb. 11:6). We need to learn to trust Him. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------But I am a worm, and no man; A reproach of men, and despised by the people. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6

worm towla worm, scarlet stuff, crimson; the worm "coccus ilicis" David lamented the fact that men despised him. He felt like a worm, worthless, defenseless, and treated with utter contempt. They hurled insults at him 14 Feeling totally helpless, -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7 All those who see Me ridicule Me; They shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A mocking gesture, similar to stick out the tongue. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8 trusted in the LORD, let Him rescue Him; Let Him deliver Him, since He delights in He Him! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------he delighted in him. Again, on the cross, (Mat 27:39-43 KJV) And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, {40} And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. {41} Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, {42} He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. {43} He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. Some might say that Jesus tried to fulfill the prophecies of the Old Testament, but how could a person control what their enemies would say at their death?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------9 But You are He who took Me out of the womb; You made Me trust while on My mothers breasts.10 I was cast upon You from birth. From My mothers womb You have been My God. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The psalmists confidence was drawn from his training as a child. From the very beginning he was trained to trust in the Lord, who had brought him out of the womb. All his life the Lord had been his God. There is an implication here regarding abortion. These are Jesus thoughts, and He felt a connection with God even while in Marys womb.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------11 Be not far from Me, For trouble is near; For there is none to help. 12 Many bulls have surrounded Me; Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled Me. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Vs-11-21 On the cross Bashan is the area on the eastern side of the Jordan to the north, where the two and a half tribes settled as Joshua conquered the land. It was a place known for being good for cattle grazing, a place for fat herds. This is referring to the people that surrounded Jesus on the cross. Many of the hate-filled crowd at Calvary were Israelites. Christ likens them here to strong bulls of Bashan and to a raging and roaring lion. The district of Bashan, east of the Jordan, was known for its rich pasture-land and for its strong, well-fattened animals. Amos later referred to the luxury-loving Israelites as cows of Bashan (Amos 4:1). When Christ speaks here of bulls of Bashan, He is referring to His own fellow countrymen, who were even then waiting to close in for the kill. They were not only like goring bulls but also like ravening and roaring lions. The Messiah of Israel had come, and they were pouncing on Him like lions on a lamb!15 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------13 They gape at Me with their mouths, Like a raging and roaring lion. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------While Jesus hung on the cross He had to endure the taunts of His enemies.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------14 I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------One of the effects of crucifixion was knocking the bones out of joint as the vertical post was raised and dropped into its hole. Also at the crucifixion: (John 19:33-34 KJV) But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: {34} But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water. The piercing of a person's side with a spear was a way of certifying whether or not the person was alive or not. The blood and water were proof that death had occurred. Some people claim that Jesus never died in the first place, but simply fainted on the cross, and was revived in the tomb. This is called the "swoon" theory. But take note: The trained Roman executioners, on their first observation thought He was dead. The blood and water proved He was dead. Samuel Houghton, M.D., the great physiologist from the University of Dublin, relates his view on the physical cause of Christ's death: "Repeated observations and experiments made upon men and animals have led me to the following results "it would occur in a crucified person, who had died upon the cross from rupture of the heart There remains, therefore, no supposition possible to explain the recorded phenomenon except the combination of the crucifixion and rupture of the heart. He died from a broken heart. 16 -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd, And My tongue clings to My jaws; You have brought Me to the dust of death. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Thirst was another byproduct of crucifixion. Several of the gospels record Jesus saying He was thirsty and they gave him vinegar to drink.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------16 For dogs have surrounded Me; The congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------This was written about 1000 years before Jesus.. Before Crucifixion was invented.

The death penalty for the Jews at that time in their history was stoning to death. This continued all the way up until the time of Christ. Crucifixion was a Roman and Grecian custom, but the Roman and Grecian empires were not in existence in Davids time (1,000 BC). It was not even in existence as a punishment anywhere in the whole world until hundreds of years after this prophecy. In fact, if Jesus had come to Jerusalem just 100 years earlier, crucifixion would not have yet have been an option in Palestine, as Josh McDowell tells us: Crucifixion was unknown in Jewish criminal law 17

The Encyclopedia Americana records: history of crucifixion as a mode of The punishment for crime must be studied as a part of the Roman system of jurisprudence... The Hebrews, for example, adopted or accepted it only under Roman compulsion: under their own system, before Palestine became Roman territory, they inflicted the death penalty by stoning 18

So how did this Roman system of punishment come to Palestine? It occurred when Pompey and his Roman legions finally brought the Judean capital under their control in 63 BC. 63 BC, Pompeys legions cut their way into the In Judean capital. Palestine became a Roman province, though nominally a puppet Jewish dynasty survived 19

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------22 I will declare Your name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Its as if the ordeal is now over. The tone now switches to praise. IT IS FINISHED !!! -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------23 You who fear the LORD, praise Him! All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him, And fear Him, all you offspring of Israel! 24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Even though Jesus bore our sins and for a moment experienced Gods abandonment, it was only for a moment. The Father never stopped loving the Son. Neither does God abhor you. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------25 My praise shall be of You in the great assembly; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him. 26 The poor shall eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the LORD. Let your heart live forever! 27 All the ends of the world Shall remember and turn to the LORD, And all the families of the nations Shall worship before You. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jesus died for the whole world. Even us Gentiles would turn to the Lord. Because of what he has done on the cross , things will never be the same again . -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------28 For the kingdom is the LORDs, And He rules over the nations. 29 All the prosperous of the earth Shall eat and worship; All those who go down to the dust Shall bow before Him, Even he who cannot keep himself alive. 30 A posterity shall serve Him. It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation, They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born, That He has done this. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------I think these last two verses may even be talking about us, a seed to come that shall serve Him, a people who will tell others what God has done.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------Psalm 23 Now keeping in the idea of the life of Christ.. Ps. 22 his crucifixion Ps 23 in the grave Ps 24 resurrection We understand David and context of this psalm.. Psalm 23 A Psalm of David. 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His names sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the LORD Forever.

Psalm 24 A Psalm of David. 1 The earth is the LORDs, and all its fullness, The world and those who dwell therein. 2 For He has founded it upon the seas, And established it upon the waters. 3 Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD? Or who may stand in His holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive blessing from the LORD, And righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is Jacob, the generation of those who seek Him, Who seek Your face. Selah7 Lift up your heads, O you gates! And be lifted up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates! Lift up, you everlasting doors! And the King of glory shall come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Isa. 52-53 In the book of Isaiah there are a group passages called "the suffering songs. " Isaiah 42:1-7, 49:1-6, 50:4-9, 52:13-53:12 Isaiah 52:13-53:12 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------19

13 Behold, My Servant shall deal prudently; He shall be exalted and extolled and be very high. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------in the Targum, are the Aramaic Translations of Hebrew manuscript 2nd Century BC "behold my servant 'the messiah' shall prosper" this is speaking of the messiah that would come, alto now with the coming of Jesus some would try to make this the nations of Israel but it would violate the text.. this is a person not a nation The messianic interpretation of Isaiah 53 was held by Jewish rabbis till the twelfth century. After that, Jewish scholars started interpreting the passage as a description of the sufferings of the nation of Israel. But how could Israel die for the sins of Israel? (v. 8) And who declared that Israel was innocent of sin and therefore had suffered unjustly? (v. 9) No, the prophet wrote about an innocent individual, not a guilty nation. He made it crystal clear that this individual died for the sins of the guilty so that the guilty might go free. The Servant that Isaiah describes is the Messiah; and the New Testament affirms that this Servant-Messiah is Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of God (Matt. 8:17; Mark 15:28; Luke 22:37; John 12:38; Acts 8:2740; 1 Peter 2:2124). Isaiah 53 is quoted or alluded to in the New Testament more frequently than any other Old Testament chapter. The index of quotations in the appendix of my Greek New Testament gives at least forty-one different citations, and this may not be all of them. The fifteen verses that comprise the fourth Servant Song fall into five stanzas of three verses each, and each of these stanzas reveals an important truth about the Servant and what He accomplished for us.21

52:13. Two important points are made in this verse: the Servant will act wisely, doing what the Lord wants Him to do, and He will be . . . highly exalted. His being lifted up refers not to the kind of death He died on the cross, but to His being exalted at Gods right hand (Phil. 2:9; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2; 1 Peter 3:22).22 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------14 Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men; -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------21

If we take these verses in their chronological order, we see that people were shocked by His appearance (52:14), His exaltation (v. 13), and His message (v. 15). We have here our Lords suffering and death, His resurrection and ascension, and the worldwide proclamation of the Gospel. When he said he was the manna, that is who he was, WHAT IS IT.. Pilate asked him,,,,, where are you from Jn. 19:9 ----------------------------Startled at the Servants appearance (Isa. 52:14). They shall see My Servant beaten and bloodied, so disfigured one would scarcely know it was a person standing there (TLB). disfigured did He look that He seemed no longer human (JB). So

When you consider all that Jesus endured physically between the time of His arrest and His crucifixion, it is no wonder He no longer looked like a man. Not only were His legal rights taken from Him, including the right of a fair trial, but His human rights were taken from Him, so that He was not even treated like a person, let alone a Jewish citizen. 1-When He was questioned before Annas, Jesus was slapped by an officer (John 18:22). 2-At the hearing before Caiaphas, He was spat upon, slapped, and beaten on the head with fists (Matt. 26:67; Mark 14:65; Luke 22:63). 3-Pilate scourged Him (John 19:1; Matt. 27:26; Mark 15:15), 4- his soldiers beat Him (John 19:3). Prophecy Isaiah 50:6 6 I gave My back to those who struck Me, And My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard; I did not hide My face from shame and spitting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------15 So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The word translated sprinkle in Isaiah 52:15 can be translated startle, but most likely it refers to the ceremonial cleansing that was an important part of the Mosaic sacrificial system (Lev. 14:17, 16; 16:1415; Num. 8:7). While the sprinkling of blood, water, and oil did not take away sins, it did make the recipient ceremonially clean and accepted before God. Because of the sacrifice of Christ, we can tell all the nations that forgiveness and redemption are offered free to all who will receive Him (1 Peter 1:12). 1 Peter 1:1-2 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, 1 To the pilgrims of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied. In the Old Testament, the blood was to be sprinkled Ex 24 and Heb, 9 on Moses and the people.. the Blood, reminder that there must be a sacrifice for sin.. God sees the blood , it washes away my sin. Ephesians 2:13 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 1 John 1:7 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Revelation 1:5 5 and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Who has believed our report? 1 And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant, And as a root out of dry ground. He has no form or comeliness; And when we see Him, There is no beauty that we should desire Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a tender shoot (i.e., coming from Davids line; cf. 11:1)23 Isaiah 11.
1

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2 The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, ]------------------------------------There is quite a contrast between the arm of the Lord, which speaks of mighty power, and a root out of a dry ground, which is an image of humiliation and weakness. When God made the universe, He used His fingers (Ps. 8:3); and when He delivered Israel from Egypt, it was by His strong hand (Ex. 13:3). But to save lost sinners, He had to bare His mighty arm! Yet people still refuse to believe this great demonstration of Gods power (Rom. 1:16; John 12:3740). The Servant is God, and yet He becomes human and grows up! The Child is bornthat is His humanity; the Son is giventhat is His deity (Isa. 9:6). In writing about Israels future, Isaiah has already used the image of a tree: Messiah is the Branch of the Lord (4:2); the remnant is like the stumps of trees chopped down (6:13); the proud nations will be hewn down like trees, but out of Davids seemingly dead stump, the of Jesse rod will come (10:3311:1). Because Jesus Christ is God, He is the of David; but root because He is man, He is the offspring of David (Rev. 22:16). Israel was not a paradise when Jesus was born; politically and spiritually, it was a wilderness of dry ground. He did not come as a great tree but as a tender plant. He was born in poverty in Bethlehem and grew up in a carpenters shop in despised Nazareth (John 1:4346). Because of His words and works, Jesus attracted great crowds; but nothing about His physical appearance made Him different from any other Jewish man. While few people deliberately try to be unattractive, modern society has made a religion out of physical beauty. It is good to remember that Jesus succeeded without it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; 23Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985. 23

He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------this was expected and foretold by John in his gospel , John 1:11 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------He was wounded, which means p ierced through. His hands and feet were pierced by nails (Ps. 22:16; Luke 24:3940) and His side by a spear (John 19:3137; Zech. 12:10; Rev. 1:7). He was crucified, which was not a Jewish form of execution (John 12:3233; 18:3132). Capital punishment to the Jews meant stoning (Lev. 24:14; Num. 15:3536). If they wanted to further humiliate the victim, they could publicly expose the corpse (Deut. 21:2223), a practice that Peter related to the Crucifixion (Acts 5:30; 10:39; 1 Peter 2:24). On the cross, Jesus Christ was br uised, which means c rushed under the weight of a burden. What was the burden? Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all (Isa. The 53:6; see v. 12; 1:4). Sin is indeed a burden that grows heavier the longer we resist God (Ps. 38:4). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------why did all this pain have to happen, we have gone astray, he went to get us back, to buy us back to bring us home. 1 Peter 2:23-24 23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousnessby whose stripes you were healed.

24

Hebrews 9:28 28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He opened not His mouth; He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, And as a sheep before its shearers is silent, So He opened not His mouth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------He was silent before Caiaphas (Matt. 26:6263), the chief priests and elders (27:12), Pilate (27:14; John 19:9) Herod Antipas (Luke 23:9). He did not speak when the soldiers mocked Him and beat Him (1 Peter 2:2123). This is what impressed the Ethiopian treasurer as he read this passage in Isaiah (Acts 8:2640). cup which My Father hath given Me, shall I not drink it? (John 18:11) The --------------------------------------------The Servant is compared to a lamb (Isa. 53:7), which is one of the frequent symbols of the Savior in Scripture. A lamb died for each Jewish household at Passover (Ex. 12:1 13), and the Servant died for His people, the nation of Israel (Isa. 53:8). Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29, NKJV); and twentyeight times in the Book of Revelation, Jesus Christ is referred to as the Lamb. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8 He was taken from prison and from judgment, And who will declare His generation? For He was cut off from the land of the living; For the transgressions of My people He was stricken. 9 And they made His grave with the wicked But with the rich at His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was any deceit in His mouth. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Vs 9 Joseph laid him in his tomb,,

25

Luke 23:50-54 50 Now behold, there was a man named Joseph, a council member, a good and just man.51 He had not consented to their decision and deed. He was from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who himself was also waiting for the kingdom of God.52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a tomb that was hewn out of the rock, where no one had ever lain before.54 That day was the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand. 11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great, And He shall divide the spoil with the strong, Because He poured out His soul unto death, And He was numbered with the transgressors, And He bore the sin of many, And made intercession for the transgressors. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------again the Targum states there 'then I will apportion unto him the spoil of great nations.. because he was ready to suffer martyrdom..
