Both: The Gateways to the Outside World Bianca: How the Eyes and Brain are connected Amy:

By Amy & Bianca How do the eyes send images to the brain slide Bianca: How do your Eyes send Images to the Brain Amy: Your eyes take in light energy around you. What that means is whatever your eyes see is focused to the back of your eye where your sensory receptors are. Your sensory receptors are located in your retina (points to retina in eye diagram) Bianca: Your sensory receptors give off a chemical reaction that turns the light energy into neural signals so the images you have seen can be sent to your brain. Amy: The neural signals get to your brain through the optic nerve in the back of your eye. (points to optic nerve in eye diagram) Occipital lobe slide Bianca: What is the Occipital Lobe? Amy: The Occipital Lobe is in the back of your brain and it controls your vision and how you interpret images. Bianca: It contains your Primary Visual Cortex, which rst processes the images you take in and send them to different levels of the Association of Visual Cortexes also in your occipital lobe. Connections slide Amy: What are some connections between the Eyes and Brain? Bianca: Your eyes take in your visual surroundings and send them to your brain Amy: Whatever you see goes to the brain and become memories and when your see other thing later in life they could remind d you of things that had happened before Bianca: For example, if you see something familiar like a cookie it could remind you of baking cookies with your friend because when you look at things your brain could recall certain images that you have seen seen before because your brain takes those images into memory. If it is Damaged slide Amy: If your Occipital Lobe or Eyes are Damaged Bianca: If your Primary Visual Cortex inside of your Occipital Lobe is damaged it could cause blindness

Amy: If the association of visual cortexes is damaged it could cause agnosia, which is when you could tell what shape something is but not what color it is Bianca: If your eyes develop cataracts, you can become blind because of the overlapping opaque,non-see-through, tissue

Blindness Slide Bianca: Blindness Amy: To be blind is to not be able to see. This means that basically that your eyes are not working correctly and you cannot see anything around you Bianca: Blindness is caused by things like cataracts, which is when opaque, nontransparent tissue, covers your eye, macular disease, when the macula, which helps your eyes understand visual details correctly, is diseased, and Retinitis pigmentosa, which starts off when you are young and develops more when you are an adult. it starts off with not being able to see at night and then it gets worse and worse and worse. Amy: Another way you could become blind is if you have Macular disease, which is when the macula, which helps your eyes understand visual details correctly, can also cause blindness. Accidents are another way to cause blindness. Getting hit with a sharp object in the eye or having to much exposure to chemicals when you dont have protective glasses on are all situations where you can become blind during an accident. Ways to Cure Blindness and How to cope with it slide Amy: Ways to Cure Blindness and How to Cope with Blindness Bianca: There are lots of ways to cure blindness for example, Amy: You could have eye transplants Bianca: You could have a special type of surgery Amy: You could use special eye medicines Bianca: You could inject your retina with a special gene but it only works with some people Amy: Some ways to cope with blindness are: Bianca: You could use sound Amy: You could use guide dogs. Bianca: You could use touch. Amy:There isnt an exact way to cure blindness but scientists are still working on nding an exact cure t for everybody
