The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, because the Lord has anointed us to proclaim: Ecce Agnus Dei - Behold the Lamb of God; Behold the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Inspired by Luke 4:18 & John 1:29
Vincent was a man of action rather than of theory. The religious spirit he communicated was simple, practical and straightforward. He looked to Christ as his leader and tried to translate the Gospel message into concrete results. Vincent preached to rich and poor alike. He founded hospitals, orphanages, food lines, housing assistance. Letters of St. Vincent de Paul reveal the religious spirit and practical genius of the man. He founded groups of priests, sisters, and lay persons to preach, teach and serve the poor in whom he found Jesus Christ at every turn, even when they were cantankerous. Vincent had a deep devotion to Christ in the Eucharist. This was a devotion that could take Christ forth and find and serve Him in the most needy and most deprived of the Children of God. He died on Sept. 27, 1660, and was canonized a saint in the Roman Catholic Church in 1737. The religious groups he founded continue to carry on his work. Several quotes of St. Vincent: However great the work that God may achieve by an individual, he must not indulge in self-satisfaction. He ought rather to be all the more humbled, seeing himself merely as a tool which God has made use of. We must love our neighbor as being made in the image of God and as an object of His love. Extend your mercy towards others, so that there can be no one in need whom you meet without helping. For what hope is there for us if God should withdraw His Mercy from us? The most powerful weapon to conquer the devil is humility. For, as he does not know at all how to employ it, neither does he know how to defend himself from it. It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible. If a needy person requires medicine or other help during prayer time, do whatever has to be done with peace of mind. Offer the deed to God as your prayer. Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, dedicated to the service of the poor, was established by French university students in 1833, led by the Blessed Frederic Ozanam who was profoundly inspired by St. Vincent. The Society is today present in 132 countries and has over 1,000,000 members that serve the poorest of the poor. We are very proud of our own St. Vincent de Paul Society and the tireless work the do for the poor in our area.

Good Guys in the Bible (October 4)- There are many heroes in our religious tradition, lets take a deeper look at the way they changed the world for the better. In School Hall Vatican II (October 11)- This council of thousands of bishops shaped a new direction in our church. Many things changed including, the language, the mass and structure of our church. In addition, the way we view other faiths, our theology and the purpose of the people in the pews was dramatically updated. This information will dramatically improve your understanding of our faith tradition. In School Hall Grief and Faith Found at the End of Life (October 18)- Understanding how to grieve in times of tragedy is one of the most important healing lessons we can learn, yet in our culture it is seldom taught. This class will also share some stories about finding God in the final moments of life. Please come and listen to the amazing discovery of God in our dying moments.

Dear Parishioners of St. Johns, Thank you so much for your gifts, prayers, and continued support of Alex and our family. Alex is now stable and off of a ventilator. He is still in a coma and has not regained consciousness since the accident on August 18th, but he has made some progress with his reflexes and responses to stimuli. Alex didnt break any bones and all of his cuts are now healed. He has a strong body that heals quickly, but unfortunately the brain heals very slowly. We have hope with Gods help and your continuous support with prayer that Alex will gradually wake up and regain his abilities. Last week, he was released from Central DuPage Hospital pediatric intensive care unit and transferred to Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton. They will work to wake him from his coma and continue his long road of rehabilitation. Thank you again for your continued support during this difficult and challenging time. God Bless You,
-

WHEN YOU HAVE A CAR TO DONATE, YOU AUTO THINKSVDP! When you hear those radio ads encouraging the donation of your used car, please keep in mind that your car will most likely NOT be given to someone who can use it. Such cars are usually sold at auction or dismantled for the resale of their parts. That may serve the profit-purposes of a charitable organization. Yet its not very practical for people who have serious transportation needs, but cant afford to buy a car. On the other hand, when you donate your car to St. Vincent de Paul, once we have determined that it is safe and functional, we put it directly into the hands of a needy person or family, so it can be usedto drive to work, to go on family errands, or to meet the many other practical needs for getting around. We have no paper-work complications. And we have no large management salaries or administrative costs to pay. We simply serve the needy. So when youre ready to surrender your car, keep St. Vincent de Paul first on your list of options. Call 630-293-9755. Well pick up the car and get it into the hands of someone who can really use it.
