INTERFAITH SUMMIT 2012 TENTATIVE SCHEDULE

Friday, 5 October 2012 Opening 09.00-09.30 Session I: "One Family under God: 09.30-10.30 Interfaith Paradigm for the 21st Century"

-New

Globalization has made a dramatic impact on all aspects of life in cities and nations on every continent. Challenges raised by immediate and personal experiences of significant cultural, ethnic and religious differences make it imperative to clarify the principles and values that can form the basis of social cohesion. One Family Under God anchors a new interfaith paradigm that speaks to the essence of our common identity that all people are spiritual beings who share a common origin. This approach has significant implications for addressing the roots of identity-based conflict as well as tapping the creative energy and drive of vibrant interfaith partnerships. 10.30-10.45 COFFEEBREAK 10.45-12.00 Session II: Universal principles as the basis of national cohesion. Most nations today are comprised of populations that are racially, ethnically and religiously diverse. What can be the basis for forging societal cohesion and national identity in a pluralistic society? This session will examine the focus on essential principles as the basis for unity in diversity. Two case studies will be considered USA with its focus on self-evident truths and its motto of e pluribus unum (out of many, one); and Indonesia, which has pursued a national motto of unity in diversity while basing its national philosophy on pancasila, five principles intended to serve as the basis of cohesion in a diverse nation. BREAK Session III: Addressing the roots of identitybased conflict The natural inclination for all people to seek common

identity, such as nationality, ethnic or tribal affiliation, religion, etc., has in many cases become the starting point of conflicts that are identity-based. This session examines One Family Under God as a vision that defines the universal human identity, and considers the implications for resolving identity-based conflict and building societal cohesion. BREAK Session IV: Building Lasting Interfaith Partnerships: Issues of Faith and Action Interfaith efforts to some are essential efforts for collaborative action in a diverse culture. To others in faith communities, however, interfaith efforts can be seen as a threat to the unique position and role of their particular faith. Some also worry that interfaith dialogue and cooperation will eventually blend all religions into a generic mix devoid of passionate faith. This session will examine ways that interfaith partnerships can be built, honoring the unique and distinct traditions of each faith, while finding common causes in the shared principles and values that form the basis of a just and ethical society.

Saturday, 6 October 2012 09.00-10.00 Sessioni V: The Family as Universal Institution: Family Values as The Common Ground for Interfaith Partnership and Action. The family is the fundamental unit of all societies, and the school for the transmission of the virtues and values necessary for good citizens in every nation. This session examines the need to strengthen and protect traditional family values, especially in light of increasingly secular cultural influences, as a unifying common cause for multi-faith action. COFFEEBREAK Session VI: The Call to Service: Faith Leadership and Creating a Culture of Service Service to others offers great potential for learning and personal growth, both for those serving and those being served. Faith leaders can play a significant role, both in encouraging and guiding adherents

toward a lifestyle of service, as well as supporting service learning opportunities that help to build relationships and understanding beyond the typical boundaries that divide us.

Background
Recent history has dimmed the hopes for an era of peace that many envisioned following the end of the Cold War. In the first decade of the new millennium, wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians; insurgency movements in northern India, Pakistan, Mindanao and South Thailand; escalating drug-cartel violence in Mexico; and widespread ethnic warfare in much of Africa have confounded serious and prolonged peacemaking efforts. Significantly, recent decades have also seen the emergence of domestic and international NGOs and faith-based groups that are committed to peacebuilding, postconflict reconstruction, and amelioration of poverty and disease. Motivated by humanitarian concerns and less constrained by national interests than conventional diplomatic efforts, this civil society sector adds vital capacity to the complex task of bringing just and sustainable peace among people traumatized by violence. Global Peace Festival Indonesian Foundation (GPFF) and Indonesia Youth Forum (IYF) will share a new view of interfaith cooperation, calling on religious leaders to move beyond mere tolerance by affirming the universal principles common to all faiths. Our vision of interfaith cooperation begins from the recognition that all people are endowed by the Creator with equal value and therefore share a common spiritual heritage. This is the original source of human rights and human dignity. Because all people have intrinsic value, we aspire to realize a global community of equality and respect. In addition, building a culture of service has been an effective methodology of peacebuilding. In conflict regions such as Kenya, Nepal, and Mindanao, service initiatives engage volunteers from all racial and religious backgrounds to forge bonds of trust and good will. Through service, volunteers gain insight into the realities of life of those traditionally seen as enemies or the other, and in the process often experience personal transformation. In addition, service initiatives

are important to further the realization of the UN Millennium Development Goals intended to uplift the worlds most at-risk populations. Interfaith Summit 2012 also recognizes that the family is the essential foundation in the quest for peace. The family is the soil in which the seed of a childs character germinates and grows. Love within the family enables children to trust, to find value in their lives, to recognize the equal rights of others, and to practice relationships that prepare them to be responsible and productive citizens. To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order,

1. VISION All mankind are One Family under God regardless of race, nationality, religion and culture. 2. MISSION Interfaith Summit 2012 promotes the vision of One Family Under God through building interfaith partnerships, vibrant families, and a culture of service and peace 3. OBJECTIVES a) To build a model of interfaith cooperation and conflict resolution in the Asia Pacific region that will become a model of peace for the world. b) To foster a global culture of peace and service, by engaging youths of the region in community service and volunteer programmes. c) To facilitate interfaith dialogues that lead to deeper cooperation through international conference that brings together leaders of all faiths. d) To propagate the message of peace and create awareness through media and large scale peace celebration that brings together everyone regardless of race, religion and culture.
