Journal Writing School Based- Experience (SBE 4/2012) Day 1

During the first day of SBE, we were asked to observe the teaching for classroom skills such as classroom instructional language and questioning techniques. Then, we asked permission from the English Teacher to enter his class while he was teaching. Then, my partner and I entered the one-hour class and we made some video recording and we took some pictures too for our portfolio by using digital camera. The recording is then burned to a CD to make use of the records that we had collected. From my observation, I can observe the way of teaching of English Subject with different environment than before because this time we observed Sekolah Kurang Murid that have not more than 10 pupils in a class. I felt quite surprised when I saw the number of students in the class and I wonder how to teach with fewer students which at least 4-6 pupils in a class. The teacher frequently asked questions to the students and more to teacher-oriented teaching. He used graphic organizer such as table and diagram to ease their understanding in grammar. I realized that he used total physical response method in his teaching method. We asked the English Teacher some questions on his principles of teaching, the techniques used in his teaching, questioning techniques and his strategies for grammatical approach. What had I gained? I gained some experience on how to take care and control the class with fewer numbers of pupils and I find it easier than a large number of pupils. What would I like to change? In my perspective vision, I would like to suggest that the teacher should be well-prepared before teaching and prevents any misconception to occur.

Journal Writing School Based- Experience (SBE 4/2012) Day 2 During the second day of SBE, we seek permission from an English Teacher to observe his role as a teachers role while teaching in class. I wanted to observe how serious he handled the class and attracted their attention. Then, we did some recording with a digital camera to be inserted into our portfolio in a CD. In addition, we wanted to ask him how well he had prepared before he entered the class. To begin with, a learner must seriously take into consideration that learning is a great commitment. Most of the times, it requires hard work in order for it to be a successful procedure. Building up knowledge should be continuous; that is, the learners should consistently study so as not to have any gaps, for the reason that then they will have serious problems in their learning. Naturally, the teacher has to be enthusiastic and make the lesson as interesting as possible so that the students become engaged as well. Teachers need to encourage and remind this and try to engage a number of students when someone asks a question. This is a very good opportunity for the others in class to learn something new, something maybe they had did not think about, or they can even answer the questions themselves. There was a slightly mismatch between the two roles during the lesson. From my observation, there was a student who did not complete his homework. As a learner should spend their time to study and do their homework given. I felt satisfied as I knew the roles of a teacher and learner in a classroom management. It was beyond my expectation because both of them have their own roles in order to achieve successful procedure. What had I gained? I can see the weakness of the English Teacher in that school which was he did not prepared the up-to-date lesson plans for his teaching. What would I like to change? I would like to change the style of teaching of the English Teacher in class and create a comfortable class for the students.

Journal Writing School Based- Experience (SBE 4/2012) Day 3

During the third day of SBE in that school (SK. Rangalau Lama, Tamparuli), my partner and I met the English Teacher to clearly observe all the worksheets that he had provided for the students and we had viewed the students book. The purpose was to determine the level of understanding of the students and body structure of the activities carried out. We had taken some pictures all the stuffs that we gathered from the teacher to be inserted in the portfolio. Then we had a little chit-chat with the teacher to ask about what the school had done so far to improve the English Subject understanding and achievement in the UPSR examination. So far, they had organized English Week and English Campaign and seminar for the UPSR candidates to conquer English knowledge and skills. What had I gained? I gained some information and the progress of improving the English skills in that school. What would I like to change? In my suggestion, the teacher could use different level of difficulty of the questions in the worksheets so the students can face a challenge while doing their homework. The teacher knew how to monitor and managed inappropriate behavior in class. He called the name of his student repeatedly and giving him chance and warning to stop doing the same mistake. Besides, teacher walked around the class to make sure that his students were ready to learn.

Journal Writing School Based- Experience (SBE 4/2012) Day 4

During the fourth day of SBE, we made a review on the UPSR achievement for the past 3 years and we concluded that there was a steadily increased in the achievement even though there had fewer candidates. Then, we discussed about the comparison between the remedial and enrichment activity that we downloaded from the Internet. In that day, we spent the time for discussion for compiling the portfolio and revised the principles of pedagogical primary school teaching and justified the classroom management. I felt very disappointed because I did not get the sample of enrichment and remedial activity from the English Teacher because he did not provide them. Then, my partner and I decided to get those stuffs from the other school around Tuaran. We need the stuffs for our portfolio and to complete the task in our coursework. What had I gained? I had the opportunity to access the school curriculum achievement records and learned to make analysis from the ICT teacher. What would I like to change? In my opinion, I could at least arrange for the meeting between homeroom teacher and parents to discuss about the achievement and behavior of their children in class.

Journal Writing School Based- Experience (SBE 4/2012) Day 5

During the fifth day of SBE, we were about to leave that school as it was the last day in that school. So, our task for the final day was to help decorate the classroom with simple short grammar notes and we had taught the students some topics with them as we referred in the syllabus. We also encourage them to read books, articles or English novel frequently to improve their words vocabulary and skills to in writing an essay. What had I gained? I found it was enjoyed to teach the students and help them in their study. We made a comparison between types of enrichment and remedial activity and analyzed the activity to identify how good the activity provided for the weak student to help them mastering the topics.
