E-JETS NEWS is a publication that presents EMBRAER 170/190 aircraft technical items. This newsletter, compiled by EFTC (EMBRAER Fleet Technical Center), brings the latest developments and shares in-service experience and maintenance tips. It also provides troubleshooting tips to optimize aircraft utilization and efficiency in daily operation. E-JETS NEWS addresses operators concerns with maintenance support and dispatchability of EMBRAER 170/ 190 aircraft. Therefore, this publication is intended for technical departments, such as Engineering and Maintenance. Recipients are encouraged to distribute this newsletter within their organizations. The first issue of EMBRAERs E-JETS NEWS brings you some reviews of technical items and new information intended to keep you updated. NEW EMBRAER Tires

Radial

EMBRAER has recently certified the main radial tire for use as an alternative to the originally certified bias tire to be fitted on the main and nose gears of the EMBRAER 190. The radial and the bias tires were developed to have the same external dimensions and the same speed/ load/ pressure rating. The inflation pressure will also be the same for both tires. Although they have the same external dimensions, the radial and bias tires are designed and manufactured according to different parameters, compounds and materials. The differences in the number of beads coupled with other design features make the radial tire lighter than the bias tire. The table below shows the tire weights. Radial Tire Bias Tire

Radial tire EMBRAER only authorizes the mixing of bias and radial tires in different legs, for example: - Left Hand MLG (Main Landing Gear) with two radial tires and Right Hand MLG with two bias tires, or vice versa. - NLG (Nose Landing Gear) with two radial tires or two bias tires. This configuration will not affect aircraft handling, performance, and brake control system functionality. However, if this recommendation is not followed, damage to the equipment can occur. The radial tire is manufactured by Michelin and the bias tire is manufactured by Dunlop. To request the radial tire, operators should contact Michelin. PIL (Parts Information Letter) 190-320011R00 and 190-32-0012R00 have been issued to include the part number of the tire wheel assembly with the radial tire. For further details, see Service Newsletter (SNL) 190-32-0012. Remark: The radial tires have not been certified for the EMBRAER 195.

On the bias ply tire each ply is at an angle different from 90 degrees to the circumferential line of the tire. On the radial tire the belt plies are wrapped around the bead at an angle of 90 degrees. The pictures below illustrate the difference.

Engine-Driven Pump (EDP) -03 Retrofit


Effectivity: EMB 170 and 190 Retrofit of EDP -03 started in October 2006. All returned EDP will be upgraded to -03. Resources are being allocated and it is expected that the whole fleet will be upgraded within six months. In order to reduce the Turnaround Time (TAT) at

Parker facilities, all returned pumps will not be subjected to the inbound Acceptance Test Procedure (ATP). The pumps will be immediately disassembly for upgrading. Observations of unexpected conditions of components within the pumps will be recorded on the Shop Findings Report that will be prepared for each unit. This will be done until the EDP -03 retrofit is accomplished. However, the outbound ATP, which is more complete than the inbound ATP, will be performed for all units.

Invalid/ Undetermined Data

This new feature allows foreseeing when the PBIT will expire. It is very helpful for planning in advance the appropriate time to perform an Electrical or Hydraulic PBIT, avoiding the PBIT expiration, which generates the FLT CTRL BIT EXPIRED message. This will also avoid flight delays or cancellations

EXPIRED Fly-By-Wire (FBW) Maintenance Function Status does not show OPERATIONAL on CMC page during Control Column Position Rigging.
Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 EMBRAER has received field reports concerning the control column sensor rigging on the CMC (Central Maintenance Computer) page showing a NO STATUS message instead of an OPERATIONAL message on the FBW Maintenance Function during the rigging procedure occurring on the LDI V05 (Loadable Diagnostic Information Version05). A Service Newsletter (SNL) will be issue to informing operators about this scenario, which is present only on the page shown in the figure.

Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 EMBRAER will issue a Service Newsletter (SNL) to advise operators that Primus EPIC Load 17.5 and 4.5 have introduced a new digital PBIT (Power Built-In Test) countdown time readout, showing the remaining hours for both Electrical and Hydraulic PBIT expiration. They are displayed on the upper left side of the Multi Function Displays Flight Controls synoptic page. Also a new CAS (Crew Alerting System) status message FLT CTRL TEST IN PROG was introduced, informing that the electrical PBIT is in progress.

The PBIT remaining hours are displayed starting from 20 and counting down to 0. If the remaining time is greater than or equal to 5, its color will be green, otherwise it will be cyan. An invalid data will be represented by "- -" (double dashes in amber).

The described scenario does not affect the rigging procedure itself and the status message can be disregarded during the rigging procedure. The correction will be reflected on LDI V06 (March 2007).

EMBRAER and the supplier are performing lab tests to assess the behavior of the grease mixture at low temperatures, as well as tests related to water ingress (seals).

EMBRAER 190 Flap Jamming


Effectivity: EMB 190 EMBRAER 190 fleet reported 4 (four) events of flap jamming during approach flight phase, presenting FLAP FAIL message on the CAS (Crew Alerting System) in some of the events. One of the evidences is the flap actuator torque limiter tripped.

Service Bulletins SB170-340007/ SB190-34-0003 Pitot Drain Hole Inspection


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 EMBRAER would like to emphasize that the repetitive inspections indicated in the above-mentioned Services Bulletins are no longer necessary after the installation of new Air Data Smart Probe ADSP-8 (SB170-34-0018-REV01 for EMBRAER 170 and SB 190-34-0008-REV.02 for EMBRAER 190).

FHDB (Fault History Database Nuisance Messages


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 Every time an IBIT (Initial Built-In Test) is started via the CMC, the following message is recorded in the FHDB Maintenance Message report:
Flight Phase Name Maint Msg Name MAINTENANCE <NO MAINT MSG NAME>

It has been observed that aircraft with Loads 17.5 and 4.5 presented the message <NO MAINT MSG NAME> recorded and associated to all flight phases. In all cases the actuators were replaced and the aircraft were dispatched without any further occurrences. The removed actuators were sent to Microtecnica (ITALY) for disassembly and investigation. Some possible contributors to these events were the actuator itself, the cold weather condition, and the mixture of lubricating grease. Although it complied with MIL-PRF-23827C Specification, the grade of grease applied was different from the one defined in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (Aeroshell 33). This is a nuisance message whose root cause is still under investigation. There is no maintenance impact and no action is required.

Multi Control Display Unit (MCDU) Mod B Robustness Enhancement

SNL190-34-0011 to recommend the accomplishment of Honeywell Service Bulletin SB7025725-34-6001 for MCDU mod B, whose improvements would enhance the equipment robustness. As described in the SNLs, there are two possibilities for the mod B application: A) On-wing installation. In this case a Honeywell technical representative should be contacted to assist the modification procedure. B) In a shop visit. The application of SB 7025725-34-6001 needs to be requested by the operator. Units manufactured at Honeywell post Serial Number 0605XXXX already have this modification incorporated.

3900 FH (Flight Hours) that was removed from the EMBRAER 170/175 fleet presented evidence of wear on its shaft. This occurrence led EMBRAER to issue Service Bulletin SB170-36-0004 to replace the LP check valves every 3000 FH. This Service Bulletin was endorsed by an Emergency Airworthiness Directive from the Brazilian Civil Aviation authority (ANAC - Agncia Nacional de Aviao Civil). For the EMBRAER 190 / 195 fleet, SB190-36-0004 has been issued with a similar approach. Nevertheless, as the EMBRAER 190 / 195 has a different engine, EMBRAER and Hamilton Sundstrand, with operators contribution, have conducted a sampling program. This program consisted in removing valves near 1000 FH and 2000 FH in order to find out if wear rates and patterns were indeed the same as the ones observed in EMBRAER 170 / 175 fleet. This sampling program revealed wear on a valve logging 2200 FH, what may indicates a higher wear rate on the valves installed in EMBRAER 190 / 195 aircraft. ANAC has already released an AD (Airworthiness Directive) stating that the replacement of the Right Hand LP Check valve in all EMBRAER 190 / 195 aircraft with more than 1500 FH must be performed within the next 100 FH. SB 170-36-0004 has been revised to comply with the AD text. EMBRAER will soon publish the recommendations for the replacement of the Left Hand LP Check Valve. These recommendations will possibly improve the operation of EMBRAER 190 / 195 aircraft

LDI V05.1 Improvements Available


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 Service Newsletters SNL170-45-0004 and SNL190-45-0004 were issued in December providing information related to the changes that will take effect with the implementation of the LDI V05.1 (Loadable Diagnostic Information Version05.1) database in the EMBRAER 170/ 190 fleet. These improvements will correct the AMS IBITs (Air Management Systems Initial Built-In Test) compatibility with the AMS Black Label 8 version and the inhibition and removal of some maintenance messages that are considered spurious. The related Service Bulletins SB170-450005 and 190-45-0001 will also be issued by December 2006. The LDI V05.1 is already available at AEROChain in the LDI Repository folder. This version is only compatible with Load 17.5 and Load 4.5.

A broken piccolo tube at the welded junction collars in slat 4 was found during the troubleshooting for an A-I WING LEAK message (see following pictures ).

New Fuel Conditioning Unit (FCU) Parker's SB


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 Parker Hannifin has issued new SBs for FCU: Parker Service Bulletin 367-32928-109 (EMBRAER 170/175) Parker Service Bulletin 367-33628-108 (EMBRAER 190/195)

These service bulletins were primarily issued to inform operators of a fix for the dashed fuel quantity indication of the Fuel Conditioning Unit P/N 367-329-002 (EMBRAER 170) and P/N 367-336-001 (EMBRAER 190). This dashed indication occurs during power-up. Operators with questions regarding this service bulletin can contact Parker at the following number: After an initial investigation, the tube manufacturer, Sonaca, informed that the event was due to contaminated weldings at the affected collar. Being so, EMBRAER will issue a Service Bulletin to inspect and, if necessary, replace the ducts. This SB is scheduled for February 2007 and production-line units are already being checked. Ice Detector messages


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 ICE DETECTOR 1(2) FAIL CAS (Crew Alerting System) messages with correlated LH(RH) ICE DETECTOR [Cx] CMC (Central Maintenance Computer) messages have been observed on the fleet FHDBs (Fault History Database). EMBRAER would like to emphasize that these messages are mostly spurious. They are subject to the applicable reset procedures, according to the Pilot's Quick Reference Reset Guide (PQRR) and the Quick Reference Handbook (QRH), or to the Fault Isolation Manual (FIM) in case of unsuccessful reset. Upcoming Load 19 and Black Label 8 will address this issue.

- Creation of FIM tasks for observed faults related to the DLS (Data Loading System). These tasks cover the events that may be observed in the DLS during a software or database upload attempt. - Creation of FIM tasks for CAS (Crew Alerting System) messages that do not have correlated messages nor need maintenance actions. The purpose of these tasks is to explain when these messages may show and make it clear that no maintenance action is necessary.

CF34-10E Thrust reverser (T/R) No-Stow


Effectivity: EMB 190 EMBRAER 190 fleet has experienced some Thrust Reverser no-stow events. One of these T/R was removed and tests were performed to determine the root cause at Middle River Aircraft Systems (MRAS). This investigation is indicating that the probable cause is the combination of friction, rigging, and temperatures effects on the track liner/slider. EMBRAER and GE/ Goodrich have been working on the following: 1. All Operators Letter (AOL) to provide field procedures on T/R no-stow events. It is schedule to be issued on December 2006. 2. Engine Maintenance Manual (EMM), Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM) and Fault Isolation Manual (FIM) improvements: Inspection and troubleshooting procedures revision; Incorporation of actuator rigging checks; Inclusion of track liner inspection and R&R (remove and replace) as required if a no-stow has occurred. The improvements in these manuals will be made available in the next revision scheduled for March 2007. The final solution is the application of dry film lubricants on track liners. Refer to CF34-10E Service Bulletin SB78-0005 Fan Reverser Track Liner Lubrication, nd issued on November 22 , 2006.

Replacement Faucets

Lavatory

Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 EMBRAER would like to inform operators about the issuance of Service Bulletins 170-25-0062 and 190-25-0034.

This SB presents the instructions to replace the forward and aft lavatory faucets with new ones (new Part Number). This solves the previous inservice issues related to faucet internal corrosion.

Fault Isolation Manual (FIM) Highlights


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 FIM revision dated October 31, 2006 brings the following highlights:

Improved potable water fill/ drain switch is available to EMB 170 and 190 aircraft operators (Service Bulletins SB170-380004 and SB190-38-0004). A design change has been made after wear was detected in the field. This could cause difficulties during water tank filling and

draining. The new part is designed with magnetically actuated switches in place of the previous mechanically actuated ones.

Radome Painting Improvements


Effectivity: EMB 170 and EMB 190 EMBRAER 170 and 190 aircraft nose radomes have presented painting peeling off as shown in the following picture:

Improvement on painting scheme was proposed to eliminate previous antistatic and primer layers, then, applying CAAPCOAT antistatic polyurethane rain erosion coating. Also, it was proposed to eliminate diverter painting and install it only after the last Top Coat application.

Field tests have been performed on EMB-145 aircraft to verify the performance of this new painting system. Results show that this new painting system with unpainted diverters over the Top Coat had a good performance. After operators approval, this painting system may be adopted on EMBRAER 170/190 st production line starting from the 1 quarter of 2007.
