MESH NO. AND MESH SIZE Woven mesh products are generally indicated by a number, which can sometimes give rise to misunderstandings. We and all the English-speaking countries use this to refer to mesh, i.e. the number of apertures (mesh count) per English inch (25.4mm) measured from the centre of a wire.

To ascertain the mesh no. of a particular product, then, we measure from the centre of a wire to a point one inch distant and count the number of apertures. When measuring the mesh nos. of fine and ultrafine wire cloth we use a magnifying glass. Depending on the fineness we count the number of apertures per inch, inch or inch (in the latter two cases the number has to be multiplied by 2 or 4 respectively, of course). The number of apertures needs to be counted in both directions (both warp and weft) as these sometimes differ. WIRE DIAMETER To ascertain the diameter of a wire we use a micrometer if possible, enabling us to measure with great precision down to a fraction of a millimetre. Here too the diameter of both the warp and weft wires needs to be measured, as these can differ. The warp wires are the ones running lengthways along the roll; the weft wires are the ones running across the roll. Once both the mesh no. and wire diameter are known, the mesh size and permeability of any type of woven wire product can be computed. D = wire diameter L = aperture between the wires Mesh size = 25.4/No. D Permeability (%) = 100 x L/(L+D) SELVEDGE This term denotes the side edge formed by the weft wire forming a loop around the outermost warp wire (see photo).

WEIGHT OF WOVEN WIRE PRODUCT Nowadays the weight per square metre of woven wire product is hardly ever stated. In a few cases this is important, however, so for the sake of completeness we give the formula for calculating the theoretical weight of any type of woven wire product. In the case of iron mesh this is: D x D x M x 0.488 Example: iron mesh, No. 4, 1.2mm wire 1.2 x 1.2 x 4 x 0.488 = 2.81 kg per square metre To calculate the weight of a woven wire product in a material other than iron, multiply the result obtained for iron with the following factors: Aluminium (pure) Aluminium (56-S) 0.347 0.342

Brass (70/30 alloy) Tombach (80/20 alloy) Bronze (CuSn6) Nickel Stainless steel (AISI 304/316) Monel Copper (E-Cu)

SPECIFICATION When placing an order or requesting a quotation for woven wire and sieves please include a full specification, stating the following particulars: Mesh no. or mesh size Wire diameter in millimetres or microns Material from which the product should be made Quantity required, i.e. number of rolls or panels and length and width of each roll or panel. QUANTITY We keep stocks of some types of woven wire which are regularly ordered in standard widths (usually 1000mm). A list of these specifications is given here. Non-standard types and widths are made solely to order. Dinxperlo has an international reputation for its expertise and high-quality specialist woven wire products. Dinxperlo produces woven wire in all mesh sizes, from extremely coarse to ultrafine, and in every weavable metal. The result is a wide variety of woven wire products, making it impossible to keep stocks of every type. We keep stocks of the ones that are most in demand. When weaving mesh, the warp and weft wires cross in an alternately pattern. There are a number of weaves for woven wire products. The simplest pattern is known in English as plain weave because of its simplicity: each wire passes in turn under and over another wire, the wire diameters are usually the same in both directions and the mesh apertures are either square or rectangular. Dinxperlo produces woven wire with mesh sizes from 5 microns to 25mm and wire diameters from 20 microns to 4.0mm. Plain weave mesh has very good sieving properties. Another type of weave is known as Dutch weave: there is a plain Dutch weave and a Dutch twill weave. For more information on Dutch weave see the section on Dutch Weave Filter Cloth. Dinxperlo has a large department with machines designed specially to produce ultrafine woven wire. We are an ISO-9001-2000 certified company that can help you keep your production at a consistent high quality level. The stock woven wire products are made from wire of the following materials in particular: Uncoated iron Uncoated iron (product subsequently hot dip galvanized) Galvanized iron Brass Bronze

Monel Spring steel Aluminium Stainless steel Heat-proof steel Galfan Special runs can be supplied in the materials required; a few examples: Polypropylene Polyester Copper Inconel Incoloy Tungstun Some materials can be specially treated to improve quality. The treatments available at Dinxperlo include: Galvanising: improvements resulting from galvanising include: It protects corrodible materials (e.g. iron) against atmospheric corrosion; the most common product is galvanized iron mesh. It reinforces the mesh by creating a kind of weld at the intersections of the wires. Epoxy-coating: applying a coating of epoxy material: This protects the woven wire product against atmospheric corrosion and above all against the effects of additives in hydraulic fluids. It brightens up the appearance with different colours. It reinforces the mesh by creating a kind of weld at the intersections of the wires. Cleaning: washing or ultrasonic cleaning of products: Used as pre-treatment before e.g. epoxy-coating To remove contaminants from products, e.g. for filtration applications Degreasing Annealing: heating the material until it starts to glow: This removes the hardness in the product caused by the weaving process, making the material more deformable.
