Material testing manual Page 1 of 1 Document title : Field testing of cement This is an approved document Doc No : MTM 101 Issue No : 02.00 Effective date: 01.08.2008

AIM: PROCEDURE:

To determine the quality of cement by simple field tests.

The total number of bags received and its grade shall be verified. One bag out of the consignment will be chosen at random and the following checks/tests done.

The date of manufacture shall be checked as printed on the bag. This shall not be more than 30 days old.

Check for presence of lumps. Good fresh cement should not have any lumps. Thrust one hand into the cement bag. It should give a cool feeling. A pinch of cement thrown into a bucket of water shall float for sometime before the particles start to sink.

Make a stiff paste out of 100gms of cement and a little water. Pat a small cake from the paste with sharp edges. Place it on a plate and slowly immerse in a bucket of water and leave for 24 hours. The cake should retain the original shape and should have set and attained some strength.

Color of cement should normally be greenish grey. A pinch of cement when felt between the fingers should give a smooth and not a gritty feeling.

If the sample of cement satisfies the above mentioned field tests it may be concluded that the cement is not bad. But this alone cannot be the criteria for either acceptance or rejection of cement. Further laboratory tests are to be done to confirm the IS requirements of the Indian Standard Specifications with respect to its physical and chemical properties.

Material testing manual Page 1 of 1 Document title : Standard consistency of cement This is an approved document Doc No : MTM 301 Issue No : 02.00 Effective date: 01.08.2008

AIM: consistency APPARATUS:

To find out the percentage of water required to produce a cement paste of standard

Vicat apparatus and a plunger of 10mm dia. STANDARD CONSISTENCY: Standard Consistency of cement paste is defined as that consistency which will permit a Vicat plunger having 10mm dia and 50 mm length to penetrate upto 5 to 7 mm from the bottom of the Vicat mould. PROCEDURE: Take 500g of cement and prepare a paste with (24% by weight of cement) water for first trial. The paste must be prepared in a standard manner and filled into a Vicat mould within 3-5 minutes. The plunger is attached and brought down to touch the surface of the paste and quickly released allowing it to sink into the paste by its own weight. Take the reading by noting the depth of penetration of plunger. Conduct a second trial with 25% of water. Similarly conduct trials with higher W/C ratios till such time the plunger penetrates upto 33-35 mm from top of Vicat mould. This percentage of water is required to produce cement paste of standard consistency and is denoted as P. Normally the standard consistency of cement is generally in the range of 27-30%.

Material testing manual Page 1 of 1 Document title : Setting time of cement This is an approved document Doc No : MTM 401 Issue No : 02.00 Effective date: 01.08.2008

AIM: APPARATUS:

To determine the initial and final setting time of cement.

Vicat Apparatus. PROCEDURE: Take 500gms of cement sample and gauge it with 0.85 times the water required to produce cement paste of standard consistency (0.85P). The paste shall be filled into the Vicat mould in specified manner within 3-5 minutes. Start the stop watch the moment water is added to cement. INITIAL SETTING TIME: Lower the needle gently and bring it in contact with the surface of the test block and quickly release. Allow it to penetrate into the test block. In the beginning, the needle will completely pierce through the test block. But after some time when the paste starts losing its plasticity, the needle will penetrate only to a depth of 33-35 mm from top of the mould. The period between the time when water is added to the cement and the time at which the needle fails to pierce the test block by 5+0.5mm is taken as initial setting time. FINAL SETTING TIME: Replace the needle used for initial setting time of the Vicat Apparatus by a circular attachment with a diameter of 10mm. The cement shall be considered as finally set when upon lowering the attachment gently cover the surface of the test block, the center needle makes an impression, while the circular cutting edge of the attachment fails to do so..

SETTING TIME OF CEMENT (IS 269) Initial Setting time not less than Final Setting time not more than 30 minutes 600 minutes

AIM: APPARATUS:

To determine the compressive strength of cement.

7.06 cm Cube Moulds, Mixing pan, Trowel, Measuring jar, Tamping rod, Compression testing machine. PROCEDURE: Take 200gms of cement and 600gms of sand (i.e. ratio of cement to sand 1:3). Out of 3 parts of sand, one part should pass through 2 mm sieve and retained on 1mm sieve, second part should pass through 1 mm sieve, and retained on 500 micron sieve and third part should pass through 500 micron and retained on 90 micron sieve ( each part consists of 200gms). Cement and sand are dry mixed using trowel in a tray and then add water of quantity P/4+3.0% of combined weight of cement and sand and mix the three ingredients thoroughly until the mixture is of uniform colour. The time of mixing should not be less than 3 minutes nor more than 4 minutes. Immediately after mixing, the mortar is filled into mould in three layers, each layer being tamped 25 times using 10mm diameter tamping rod. After 24 hours the cubes are demoulded and immersed in clean fresh water until taken for testing. (P - denotes percentage of water required to produce cement paste of standard consistency)

As per IS 8112 and IS 12269 the compressive strength of 43 grade and 53 grade cement should be 43 N/mm2 and 53 N/mm2 respectively. Make sure Ennore Sand is used for conducting this test.

Material testing manual Page 1 of 1 Document title : Actual bulking This is an approved document Doc No : MTM 601 Issue No : 02.00 Effective date: 01.08.2008

AIM: APPARATUS:

To determine the actual bulking of sand by a simple field test.

Glass measuring jar. PROCEDURE: A sample of moist fine aggregate is filled into a measuring cylinder in the normal manner. Level of sand in the jar h1 is noted down. Water is poured into measuring jar till the sand is completely inundated and shaken well. Since the volume of the saturated sand is the same as that of the dry sand, the inundated sand completely offsets the bulking effect. The level of the sand h2 is noted down. h1-h2 shows the bulking of the sample of sand. Percentage of Bulking = (h1-h2) * 100 h2 The percentage of bulking so found out is employed for correcting the volume of fine aggregates used. This can be considered as one of the important method of field control to produce quality concrete.

AIM: APPARATUS:

To determine the silt content in the fine aggregate.

Glass measuring jar. PROCEDURE: Measuring jar is half filled with the test sample. Water is added to the jar upto 3/4th of its full capacity. The jar with the liquid is completely shaken so that all the clay and silt particles get mixed with water and then the whole jar is kept in an undisturbed condition. After a certain time interval, the thickness of the layer of clay and silt standing over the fine aggregate particles will give a fair idea of the percentage of clay and silt content in the sample of aggregate under test. IS 383 1970 specifies that the clay and silt content should not exceed 7%.

AIM: To determine the particle size distributions of fine aggregates by conducting dry sieve analysis. APPARATUS: Set of IS Sieves, Balance PROCEDURE: Fineness modulus is a ready index of coarseness or fineness of the material. Fineness modulus is an empirical factor obtained by adding the cumulative percentages of aggregate retained on each of the standard sieves ranging from 4.75mm to 150 micron and dividing this by 100. The larger the figure, the coarser is the material. The air-dried sample is weighed and successfully sieved as the appropriate sieve starting with the largest. Each sieve is taken separately and sieved for a period not less than 2 minutes. After the completion of sieving, the material retained in each sieve is weighted. The observations are entered in the tabular column. The following limits are taken as guideline (Source: Concrete Technology by M.S.Shetty). Material testing manual Page 2 of 2 Document title : Sieve analysis for the fine aggregates This is an approved document Doc No : MTM 801 Issue No : 02.00 Effective date: 01.08.2008

As per grading limits of IS: 383 1970, the fine aggregate grading becomes progressively finer i.e. from grading zone 1 to 5. It is recommended that fine aggregate conforming to grading zone IV should not be used for RCC unless tests have been made to ascertain the suitability of proposed mix proportions. IS 383 1970 specifies the following limits Type of Sand Fine Sand Medium Sand Coarse Sand Fineness Modulus 2.2 2.6 2.6 2.9 2.9 3.2

Sand having a fineness modulus more than 3.2 will be unsuitable for making satisfactory concrete. In such a case the sand will be rejected for concreting. The sand if it is not able to be rejected, the same can be used for leveling bed or PCC works, Packing, Soling etc.

AIM: APPARATUS:

To determine the compressive strength of concrete cube.

Compressive Testing Machine. PROCEDURE: The cubes are cast in the standard ( 15cmx15cmx15cm ) inlayers of 5cm. Each layer is tamped using 16mm diameter, 60cm long tamping rod, 35 strokes. The cubes are demoulded after 24 hours and cured properly by covering with hesain cloth. The specimen is placed in the compression testing machine in such a way that the cast face is in contact with the platens of the testing machine, i.e. the position of the cube when tested is at right angles to that as cast. Load is applied on the cube at a rate of 15 N/mm2/minute and the load at which cube fails is noted. Cubes are tested for 3rd,7th and 28th day strength. As per IS 456, 28th day compressive strength is the only criteria for acceptance or rejection of concrete. The 28 days strength for various grades of concrete as per IS 456, Table 2, page 25 is as follows: Specified characteristics compressive strength at 28 days (N/mm2) 10 15 20 25

Grade designation M10 M15 M20 M25

In case of doubt regarding the grade of concrete used, either due to poor workmanship or based on results of cube strength tests, further action shall be taken based on the codal provision given in clause 16 of IS - 456.

AIM: APPARATUS:

To measure the workability of concrete.

Slump Cone, Tamping Rod (16mm dia, 0.6m Long) trowel. PROCEDURE: The internal surface of the mould is thoroughly cleaned and free from moisture and any old set concrete before commencing the test. The mould is placed on a smooth, horizontal, rigid and non-absorbent surface. The mould is then filled in four layers, each approximately of the height of the mould. Each layer is tamped 25 times by the tamping rod taking care to distribute the strokes evenly over the cross section. After the top layer has been tamped, the concrete is struck off level with a trowel and tamping rod. The mould is removed from the concrete immediately by raising it slowly and carefully in a vertical direction. This allows the concrete to subside. This subsidence is referred as slump of concrete. The difference in level between the height of the mould and that of the highest point of the subsided concrete is measured. This difference in height in mm is taken as slump of concrete. Following table indicates the various degree of workability. DEGREE OF WORKABILITY VERY LOW LOW SLUMP IN MM 0-25 25-50 USE FOR WHICH CONCRETE IS SUITABLE Roads vibrated by power operated machines Roads vibrated by hand operated machines.
