The First Step to a Well-Behaved Dog

The first class in our good dog training is getting your dog to pay attention to you. Sounds fun, right? But it has to be the right kind of attention, not the playful and loving kind. We save that for great achievements, which will happen soon. In this class, you teach your dog to listen for communication using your voice, body language and leash. We do this by teaching them to walk well at your side, following your speed. Then they learn to change direction with you eventually without hitting the end of the leash. This interaction has a larger importance. It defines how your dog will interact with you and how much he or she listens and watches you. Simply walking well with its owner builds mutual trust and bonding between you and the pup. It becomes the solid foundation for the rest of the classes so I recommend focusing a lot of attention on this class. In general, be careful to reward good behavior and correct (gently, see sidebar page xx) or ignore bad behavior. While this may sound simple, people have a tendency to feel sorry or nervous when a dog, especially new to them, doesnt respond, so they naturally try to comfort their pet. However, this is the moment to be strong and stay on message rather than picking up and hugging your cutey, even though thats you want to do. Hold out for the bigger reward when the dog does what you want, and you both are excited and proud of it.

Note that different dogs learn at different speeds so much of your success will come from patience, repetition and staying consistently on message. You will see this happening as each class builds on the next one.

The First Heeling Lesson

We start this lesson by repeating the proper leash hold.

Loop goes over your thumb.

Double the leash back and hold the loop so there is slack in the leash between you and the dog.

Dont hold the leash taut. It should have a nice droopy curve to it.

STEP-BY-STEP HEELING CLASS

Like any g ood c you keep r lass there will be a einforcing you and yo lot of repetition so ur dogs n ew skills.

Here is the natural starting position with your proper leash hold. If your dog wont sit by your side, you should stand there for a bit and let the dog wander around on the leash. If you ignore him and dont move, after a while he will sit naturally. Try a light upward tug on the leash to bring his head up which naturally brings his behind down. If he doesnt sit in five minutes, move to a place with fewer distractions, and he should take a seat. When he finally sits, you can move to his side (him on the left) to start.

Make sure the dog is on your left, and you consistently keep the dog on your left for all your walking. (You can keep your dog on your right. Just exchange all the lefts in the instructions to rights. Be consistent whatever side you pick so the dog gets used to where he needs to look.)

Now pat your thigh so it makes a good noise and start walking left foot first (the one nearest him). He will follow the foot and associate the sound with starting to walk.

Always start walking with the foot nearest the dog. For most people this will be the left foot. This gives your dog a visual clue about what he is supposed to do. It is good to take a strong, confident first step and assume in your head that the dog will be following you. A nice long first step gives the dog a solid lead to follow.

Soon, usually in a matter of xx days/tries, your dog will be walking by your side well. Occasionally he or she will forget the drill. Be firm but understanding.
