Sunday, October 7th Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost Lectionary 27 Holy Communion Now the Feast

INTRODUCTION Today's gospel combines a saying that makes many of us uncomfortable with a story we find comforting. Jesus' saying on divorce is another of his rejections of human legislation in favor of the original intent of God's law. Jesus' rebuke of the disciples who are fending off the children should challenge us as well. What does it mean to receive the kingdom of God as a child does? CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP PRELUDE Chorale Fantasia on For the Beauty of the Earth Wells

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the holy Trinity, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, whose name is majestic in all the earth, who rescues and heals in every time of trouble, who does all things well. Amen. Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. You are invited to kneel or be seated as you are able Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. Steadfast and saving God, have mercy on us. In so many ways we cause or suffer brokenness: envy, ambition, conflict, boasting, hard hearts, lashing tongues, dishonor for the poor. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peacemaking, the sheaves of wisdom and justice; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. God the Father sent Jesus, the Son of God, so that you could receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Continue to pray for one another; care for those who are wandering; and seek the good, that you may live. Hear this word from Christ himself, in the power of the Holy Spirit: God's love is healing balm for your wounds. Your transgressions are forgiven, in the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. You are invited to please stand as we sing: GATHERING SONG: For the Beauty of the Earth (ELW879)

PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW Eternal God, without your grace no promise is sure. Strengthen all who are married with faithfulness, peace, kindness, gentleness, and all other gifts of your Spirit, so that they may fulfill the vows they have made. Bless also those whose marriages have ended through divorce. As you always embrace those who are broken, move your Church to welcome and comfort those whose relationships have been broken. Overcome bitterness with hope, hatred with understanding and acceptance, and injury with healing, through the one who overcame death and the grave and who gives us new life, Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

GREETING The grace given to us in Christ Jesus, the power of God who calls us with a holy calling, and the help of the Holy Spirit living in us be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Kyrie (ELW 157)

HYMN OF PRAISE: Now the Feast and Celebration

him for no reason." 4Then Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin! All that people have they will give to save their lives. 5But stretch out your hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face." 6The LORD said to Satan, "Very well, he is in your power; only spare his life." 7 So Satan went out from the presence of the LORD, and inflicted loathsome sores on Job from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. 8 Job took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes. 9 Then his wife said to him, "Do you still persist in your integrity? Curse God, and die." 10But he said to her, "You speak as any foolish woman would speak. Shall we receive the good at the hand of God, and not receive the bad?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Psalm 8 PRAYER OF THE DAY Sovereign God, you have created us to live in loving community with one another. Form us for life that is faithful and steadfast, and teach us to trust like little children, that we may reflect the image of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated CHILDRENS MESSAGE FIRST READING: Job 1:1; 2:110 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil One day the heavenly beings came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD. 2The LORD said to Satan, "Where have you come from?" Satan answered the LORD, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it." 3The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job? There is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man who fears God and turns away from evil. He still persists in his integrity, although you incited me against him, to destroy

Refrain:

Tone:

O | LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in | all the earth! 2 you whose glory is chanted above the heavens out of the mouths of in- | fants and children; you have set up a fortress against your enemies, to silence the foe | and avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work | of your fingers, the moon and the stars you have set | in their courses, 4 what are mere mortals that you should be mind- | ful of them, human beings that you should | care for them? R
5

Yet you have made them little less | than divine; with glory and hon- | or you crown them. 6 You have made them rule over the works | of your hands; you have put all things un- | der their feet:

all | flocks and cattle, even the wild beasts | of the field, 8 the birds of the air, the fish | of the sea, and whatever passes along the paths | of the sea. 9 | O LORD our Lord, how majestic is your name in | all the earth! R SECOND READING: Hebrews 1:14; 2:512 Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, 2but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds. 3He is the reflection of God's glory and the exact imprint of God's very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs .5Now God did not subject the coming world, about which we are speaking, to angels. 6But someone has testified somewhere, "What are human beings that you are mindful of them, or mortals, that you care for them? 7 You have made them for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned them with glory and honor, 8 subjecting all things under their feet." Now in subjecting all things to them, God left nothing outside their control. As it is, we do not yet see everything in subjection to them, 9but we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 It was fitting that God, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many children to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, 12saying, "I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters, in the midst of the congregation I will praise you." The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We invite you to please stand

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (sung twice)

GOSPEL: Mark 10:216 The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.
2

Some Pharisees came, and to test him they asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?" 3He answered them, "What did Moses command you?" 4 They said, "Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of dismissal and to divorce her." 5But Jesus said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. 6But from the beginning of creation, 'God made them male and female.' 7'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8and the two shall become one flesh.' So they are no longer two, but one flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." 10 Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this 11 matter. He said to them, "Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery against her; 12and if she divorces her husband and marries another, she commits adultery." 13 People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15 Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it." 16And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

HYMN OF THE DAY: God, When Human Bonds Are Broken (ELW 603) APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION As disciples of Christ Jesus called to love and serve all people, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. You are invited to kneel or sit as you are able Each petition ends with: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Hear our prayers, faithful God, and renew us by your Spirit, that we may joyfully love and serve you and one another, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.
