As with most military vehicles, the stated weight carrying and load bearing capabilities are most likely very underrated.

This type of tractor would commonly be found in engineering and transportation units for use in moving equipment such as dozers, graders, cranes, and excavators. It can also be used to transport lighter armored vehicles such as M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicles and M113 Armored Personnel Carriers. Heavier armored vehicles, like main battle tanks, would be considered too heavy for this vehicle to transport. In addition, this tractor can also pull a 6000 gallon water distribution semitrailer for use in road and building construction, dust control, water transportation, and as an auxiliary firefighting system. This particular truck is shown as a vehicle from the Forward Support Company (FSC) of the 253rd Engineer Battalion, Arizona Army National Guard. This truck was purchased out of government service from Barstow, California in 2010. It was used as a training vehicle by Northrop Grumman at the National Training Center (NTC) at Fort Irwin in California. In its use there, it was upgraded with an automatic transmission and an air ride cab suspension. The automatic transmission in this vehicle is the same as in the decades newer M916A3 Tractor. It can start and climb a 25% grade with full payload in both forward and reverse directions and can operate on a side slope of up to 10% where adequate traction is available. The truck can be placed in 6x6 configuration, supplying motive power to the front axle and locking the driveline together via the transfer case. The Detroit lockers in the rear axles deliver equal power to both sides of the rear axles for maximum traction. The 45,000 lb winch on the rear of the vehicle is used to pull the folding gooseneck M870 trailer up onto the tractors fifth wheel, making use of the roller and ramps at the rear. It is also used to pull loads or disabled vehicles up onto the trailer. The winch can also be used to recover the tractor should it become stuck or mired.
