A Message from the Editor
Hey Key Clubbers! October is filled with many events you don't want to miss out on! One special event is the UNICEF Trick-or-Treat event. In this event, members carry around a small orange box on Halloween, and instead of asking for candy, ask for loose change. This money will be collected and donated to a Tetanus Elimination program. Tetanus is a serious problem in developing countries. When babies contract this illness, they become very sensitive to light and touch. They cannot even bear to be held by their mothers because of the intense pain. That's why Key Club and UNICEF are working together to eliminate maternal and neo-natal Tetanus. One shot is worth less than two dollars and can be used to immunize a mother. This also protects all her future babies from contracting the deadly disease. So if you would like to help these families and enjoy Halloween at the same time, this is the project for you! Key Club will also most likely go trick-or-treating together, so stay tuned for any updates. It is truly amazing how such a small action can so greatly and positively impact the lives of many people around the world.

Presidents Periodical
HELLO PENGUINS! I'd like to formally welcome both our new and old penguins to another exciting year with Fremont High School Key Club! The months of September and October have been filled with numerous events that show the many aspects of Key Club and what it means to be a PURPLE PENGUIN! In late September, we had two of our very own members, Stephen Garcia (c/o 2014) and Sarah Chapiama (aka our spirit chair, also c/o '14), go to Regional Training Conference up at Camp Jones Gulch in La Honda, California. There, they met Key Clubbers from all over Northern California, attended valuable informational workshops, and had the opportunity to hear amazing guest speakers, before ending the night with a cozy campfire and a dance. To cap it all off, they came back with a snazzy tshirt to commemorate a wonderful weekend! This truly amazing event actually happens every year, so keep your eyes peeled for next year's Regional Training Conference. Additionally, we had a wonderful bonding event (which was also a great fundraiser for our club)! 3 Our Fundraising Chair, Alex Siegel, Finally, with membership dues and shirt order forms almost turned in, you are just about ready to be a Key Clubber and Division 34S Purple Penguin! That means you've Fremont Key Newsletter KEY CLUB got to be ready to answer the wonderful bonding event (which was also a great fundraiser for our club)! Our awesome Fundraising Chair, Alex Siegel, arranged a Sunday of Fun (-draising ;D) at Golfland and Panda Express here in Sunnyvale. Thank you to all who came out and supported FHS Key! Hopefully, you met a new penguin buddy, all while playing a round of mini-golf and chowing down some fried rice! Be sure to grab your buddy and attend some of the awesome projects that are coming up, like the Firehouse Pancake Breakfast! PS: I FEEL GOOD! OH, I FEEL SO GOOD! UUUH! (pelvic thrust) I FEEL FINE! ALL OF THE TIME! ABOOGA! ABOOGA! ABOOGA, BOOGA, BOOGA! (Throw your fist over your head and spin in a circle while screaming ABOOGA)

turned in, you are just about ready to answer the infamous question "HOW DO YOU FEEL?!"

Kiwanis Korner
Hey Penguins, how do you feel?! If you think you hear that a lot already, then just wait for Fall Rally North! For Key Clubs, this is the loudest day of the year. Clubs from across Northern California and Nevada gather at Six Flags to show Key Club spirit, raise money for the Pediatric Trauma Program, and of course, have fun. What is the Pediatric Trauma Program? PTP is an important service initiative supported by all the Kiwanis family clubs in California, Nevada and Hawaii. The program is designed to prevent and treat unintentional injuries for children. It's not something you hear about all the time, but in fact, unintentional injury is the #1 cause of death for children under 14 in the U.S. Things like falls and car crashes are considered preventable, and funds raised help provide preventative education, helmets, treatment support and training for doctors to be able to better serve the needs of children. So how do cheering and preventing pediatric trauma come together? At Fall Rally, a portion of the ticket fee benefits PTP, but also, at the spirit rallies, divisions show their pride by bidding on district board members in a huge auction. All the money raised, which surpassed $100,000 last year at both the Northern and Southern rallies, helps children in our district. If you didn't sign up, we have a couple seats left. Just let us know if you would like to join in on the fun! Michelle Berg Kiwanis Advisor

Firefly Run
Hello my Penguins! So in September, I had the opportunity of going to the Firefly Run in San Jose! Neeja, half of our lovely Project Team, did a wonderful job of coordinating this event, and even got some of us free T-Shirts! This run had many other spirited clubs, businesses, and organizations around all running clad in neon lights and crazy costumes. The first 3 runners of the male and female categories even won prizes! Anyways, many of the Key Clubbers, and other high school community service clubs from around the area all gathered to help lead the runner through the dark paths. We also had our flashlights, glow-sticks and music to keep them pumped and running. I encourage all of your to come out and sign up for this event next year since it is a lot of fun! Yours Truly, Sarah Chapiama Spirit Chair The firefly race was extremely fun. When we first arrived there we saw tons of people showing off their costumes and preparing for the run. As we waited for our jobs to begin there were tons of freebies; we got free glow sticks, nail polish and cookies. When the sun finally set and the race was about to begin everyone's costumes lit up and it looked amazing. We headed out towards our post and started guiding the runners where to run. One by one the joggers filed past us and their glow in the dark costumes looked spectacular. After the race was over there was a best dress and other fun contests up on stage. The firefly run is definitely something everyone should go to next year. Connie Ooi Scrapbook Chair

Regional Training Conference (RTC)

Greetings Penguins! Recently, I was able to attend the Regional Training Conference in La Honda. This was a 2 day, 1 night event in the YMCA Camp Jones Gulch, where 12 different divisions around the Bay Area came together to socialize and review the different duties every Key Clubber has. Our theme this year was "Riding the Million Waves of Service" and our T-Shirts showed the CNH Bee "Surfing the Web", because our Group Themes were based on different socializing sites. Each group was led by a different Lieutenant Governor, and was asked to create a skit and cheer. Later in the day, we all gathered around the campfire with our groups and showed off our skits and cheers. Each skit was based off a different organization Key Club works hard to support (for example: Trick or Treating for UNICEF). After everyone got a turn to strut their stuff we had an impromptu karaoke session, and headed back to camp. There, we were allowed to pick of 3 activities: a dance, board games, and doing homework. Obviously, as Spirit Chair, I chose the dance; it was a crazy and fun-filled night, and we all went to sleep in our cabins very tired. The next morning we had a DCM and Fremont won Third for Penguin Popsicle Points! This month I hope we beat Homestead and get first! After closing games and ceremonies, we all said goodbye to our friends and went home. I feel that everyone should go to RTC, not only to meet people from other divisions, but also to get a sense of community. RTC is special, unifying experience that is different from FRN where everyone is separated into their own division, or at DCON where it's only us Purple Penguins. I strongly advocate for as many people as possible to go to RTC next year as it is one of those life changing experiences! And if you have any questions just e-mail me or find me at a meeting! Yours Truly, Sarah Chapiama Spirit Chair

Regional Training Conference (RTC)

Hello Fremont Key Clubbers! So last week I went to a multi-divisional event called RTC (Regional Training Conference). This conference was held at a campsite called YMCA Camp Jones Gulch a few miles near Half Moon Bay. This event mainly talked about new projects and funds, plus leadership skills that we all need in order to be successful in the future. OTHER THAN THAT, It's a really good firsthand experience on what key club is really about, SERVICE and FRIENDS. It was sad to hear only 2 representatives (me and Sarah Chapiama) of our high school went to this event. Since only 2 people went, we didn't need to pay the $60 fee because Kiwanis paid for our trips under their $600 scholarship & funds. So, I hope that many of you new can get a chance to go next year! This year's theme was "Surfing for Service", and by surfing, we meant the WEB. So we were all spit up into teams that had to do with the internet. There were teams such as Skype (I was in there), Oovoo (Sarah was there), Facebook, Hotmail, Gmail, Tumblr, Twitter, Youtube, Yelp!, etc. and we had to make skits and cheers with all new people we haven't met before. These teams were lead by the LTGs (Lieutenant Governors) of our region. Since it was an overnight event, we slept in cabins with other new people as well. Don't worry, the cabins were clean! We performed all our skits up at a campfire just up a steep hill. There was a "karaoke" and Ice breakers afterwards. Following that, once we got down the hill, we had a dance party and played ping pong on the deck of the dining hall! The night was long, and many people were having so much fun! Also, the dinner and breakfast was SO DELICIOUS! When RTC was over, I missed it so much, I hope I can go back again next year. I anticipate for all you new key clubbers to come as well! Trust me, when i got home and on Facebook, I received ~42 friend requests and now I'll never forget the wonderful people I met at the event! Next time again! Stephen Garcia FHS Key Club Member

OCTOBER JUMBLE

Unscramble each of the clue words. Take the letters that appear in boxes and unscramble them for the final message.

Quote of the Month: "I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. " ~Edward Everett Hale

Did you know? Key Club's original motto was "We build", after Kiwanis's motto. However, it later changed to "Caring~ our way of life" because it more accurately portrayed Key Club spirit and values.
