EF International Academy has the most outstanding teachers and faculties. Teachers here are always ready to help and give advice to us. As Angel said: "Teachers here don't only know my name, they know me." Teachers here are world-class. Most of them have travelled to many countries in the world. They are experienced, and know exactly how to teach students from the world. With the addition of new teachers and faculties at the begining of this academic year, our EFIA family became bigger and even more diverse.

EFIA Drama Club

As the Drama Club advisor, producer, and director of all the theatre productions here at EF International Academy for the past four years, after each year there is the question of What next? As our school has grown, our theatre program has grown accordingly. We performed The Laramie Project, a docu-drama based on the hate crime a young homosexual man in a small town of Wyoming. Coming in to this school year, it would now be the time to take another creative risk and present our first musical: Grease.

Memory Project

The Memory Project 2011 Ms. R Millhouse This club has a simple concept but with a far-reaching impact. Our students applied for and received photographs of orphan children. In 2011 the photos came to us from an orphanage in Mexico. Each student then created a portrait drawing from the photograph. They spent on average ten hours crafting a life-like drawing for their child. Many chose to add a background that would add some color and character. The smiles on the kids faces say it all! In 2012 we will be working with children from Honduras.

EFIA Amnesty International

As EF International Academy New York's first official "Amnesty International Student Group" founded by Steven Wang and myself in September, we participated in letter campaigns, urgent actions and (fundraising) events among other things as well as created our own projects starting from 2011, the 50 year anniversary of AI. During the global Write-A-Thon, we sent out a total of 300 letters and freed Azerbajani activist Jabbar Savalan while our Auction for Rights raised $1100. Coming up next is our charity concert JAMnesty which is also our very last gift to the Seniors. I am very proud of all our members and hope that EFIA Amnesty International will continue to SHINE A LIGHT for future generations as well. by Chindalay Phonsavath

Literary Magzine

The EFIA Literature Club is the proud producer of the first literary magazine of EF International Academy! We are composed of a variety of nationalities who all share a love for the written word. Throughout the course of the year, we have created and gathered literary pieces inspired by moments of our lives, dividing them into four different sections of the magazine: US, NEW YORK, HOME and TIME.We are delighted to offer literary pieces in multiple languages, ranging from Vietnamese to Norwegian, from the Cyrillic alphabet to the Traditional Chinese writing. In our work, we have discovered a unifying thread woven throughout the various images, languages, and characters: MEANING - the title of our magazine.

Every year at EFIA is unique. This year - from September until now - has seen a lot of events. Be it the regular assemblies turning into surprising spectacles, cozy dinners in Rita II, music concerts, a spontaneous evacuation and relocation of Lugari residents, a great night in Tarrytown House Estate before the SATs, the Culture Fair in October, appreciating your loved ones on Valentine's Day by sending them roses, visiting colleges in New York City after completing the most exciting research paper required by the IB Extended Essay (EE). Events at EFIA, never stop!

Spellman Auditorium. Wednesday, 2PM: "Where do you go?" "Assembly..." Yes, assembly. Presenting a rare opportunity for the EFIA population to meet after an exhausting day of shortened but intense classes, the weekly assemblies feature enthusiastic introductions by Dr. Mahoney ("WiFi!"), musical performances by Tam aka Bruno Mars and his crew, Mr. Lupo and Ms. Yoo, Amnesty International presentations, awards for the best/most improved students (with the winners usually not being present) and introduce Mr. Hodgkinson rising up to be EFIA's Next Superteacher while making a flaming exit (he received 8 friend requests that night)... and so forth. It has since been an integral part of our school life. While those who attend it want to desperately run away, those who do so are actually missing out on a lot of surprises. What makes it even better: It has become much shorter! Interesting Fact: The idea of assemblies was first introduced by Dr. Trew herself in her quest of establishing what would hopefully be a school tradition. And they became one for sure. "Just the way you are." Exactly.

Culture Fair
EF International Academy New York is the home for students from more than 30 nations. The diversity of cultures gives us endless energy - and the EFIA Culture Fair was a great opportunity for all students on the campus to experience different cultures and learn something new from each other. This meaningful event certainly increased our awareness of ethical issues and international perspectives that are two of the most important values of the IB learner profile. It was a great success; and as the future of the world will be determined by our generation, crossculturalunderstandings are definitely the first step to achieve true globalization. - Steven Wang

As a New Yorker, I bleed pinstripes. I also avoid the city of Boston. So, on that afternoon as water gushed down the second floor boys stairwell as though we were reliving Titanic itself, Dr. Mahoney calmly said, Lets go to Boston. Four days and countless trips to Quincy Market later, we were taking a boat trip about the city of Boston. Mr. Dunn and I were watching the New York Football Giants were pouncing on the New England Patriots. I was silently cheering, as the water looked frigid and I didnt want anyone to throw me overboard. After a triumphant victory, I walked inside and stood next to Dr. Trew. You were all on the dance floor below, singing and dancing along to Rihannas We Fell In Love. Dr. Trew looked said, Tonights the night. Nothing would be the same after this. We were a unit, bound by water and dirty clothes. Our sports alliances didnt matter, nor did our mutual desire for New York, our home. We had fallen in love in a hopeless place. - Ms. Lauren Raia

Lunar New Year

EFIA successfully organized the Lunar New Year 2011 with the participation of all IA students. We sang, danced and tasted traditional Chinese, Vietnamese food. Every Lunar New Year comes and the students who live far away from home miss our parents, siblings and traditions in our country, therefore, this event makes us recognize the value of family. So far celebrating New Year here helps us rid the feeling of being homesick, feel warm in the American Winter weather, discover ourselves and crucially share the cultural customs with our friends from all over the world. -Nguyn Hong Ngn

Dedication
to Grease
Theatre is a collaborative art. Many of our talented teachers stepped forward to offer their assistance. What made is possible was our excellent creative team of fellow teachers: Ms.Beerman (Science), our choreographer, Mr. Kwabi (Math) as musical director, and Mr. Lupo (ESL), as Band Director. In addition, Dr. Pohland (German) offered to sew our costumes and Tim Barnes (History) helped with some of the initial set construction. Why Grease? After seeing many directing and watching many high school musicals over the years, I wanted to choose a show that our young people from all over the world could respond to. As the one of the most successful movie musicals in history, I thought that there was a chance many of them had some previous knowledge or background of the story, or at least their parents did! Also, there is a large cast, with the opportunity to add ensemble parts, and they were evenly distributed between male and female roles. In addition, they were cool which students from all over the world could identify with. As I said in my directors note for the program:

Grease doesn't have a message ... it gives a flavor of being a teenager in the 50s when rock'n'roll and putting grease on your hair were the most important things in life. Teenage angst and love's young dream remain timeless and universal themes. Theater can be a unifying experience for all, creating a sense of family due to the intense hours of rehearsals, commitment, emotional investment, all extra-curricular. This is especially important in our school, I believe, because we are a boarding school and our students do not go home to their own families every day. Teacher participation in student life outside of the classroom helps to strengthen the sense of community within our school and build lasting bonds. It was a great success using some of our teachers for the first time last year in our production of The Laramie Project so I decided that the two adult roles in Grease should be played by our talented teachers as well. Gratefully, Mr. Knight (History) and Mrs. Walsh (English) happily agreed! The laughter and cheers from our student audience helped to validate this choice. I want to thank all the student cast and crew, faculty members, along with our first ILS partnership, who devoted so much time and energy into creating EF International Academys first musical a true collaboration! We hope you enjoyed the fun-loving spirit and immortal songs that make Grease a favorite among rock and roll fans of all ages. By Ginny Borton

Sports are an essential part of our lives. We need to find the balance between our academic endeavors and our athletic activities because as the latin phrase says: Mens sana in corpore sano (a sound mind in a healthy body). Here in EF we got many options to stay active: from simple and different clubs to more committed varsity sports, which we dont do because of CAS but because we, students, enjoy them. These activities keep us dynamic and energized which is beneficial for us in many different ways.

As a first year program at EFIA, the Varsity Soccer team spent the year in 'building' mode. In our contests, the team played well, but suffered from a scoring affliction. With capitalization on just a few of the many scoring opportunities, the team, would easily been at .500 for the season. One of the greatest outcomes this season was the sense of camaraderie built among the members of the team and our coachign staff. I want to congratulate all members on an inspoiring season to build on next year.

A two-year journey is soon coming to an end - and it was quite a journey for each and every one of us. When we first arrived here at EFIA, we did not know each other nor did we know ourselves. These two years have been a discovery of our own identity, our cultural understanding and our own place in the world. Who we were or what we will be does not matter; what matters is where we stand now. We have become a family. No matter where we will go we wish all the best to each and every one of us.

From Seniors with Love... I

Friendships that will last a lifetime. A second family. Some wise words by our EFIA Senior Class 2012 - their hopes, dreams, reflections.
Dont cry because its over. Smile because it happened. We have finally survived IB after two years of stress, less sleep and desperation. By the day well leave this place, our second home, I personally can say these were two incredible, Reyna Jaimes, MEXICO memorable and breathtaking years that I will always remember. Anna-LisaJanisch,GERMANY Great people came together to create a community. Thank you for making my year here. Who knew that just 12th grade in international school would grant me another family? I had the time of my life at EFIA, Thanks to my friends, teachers, security and New York City. DameliUshbayeva,KAZHAKSTAN Kamilla Lien Kronholm, NORWAY The moment I left Mexico I thought I was going to be alone along this road. I was wrong. I found more than classmates, roommates or friends . . . I found a family. Youve made my life so much better, more complete. Thanks for the memories.

It's not easy to meet everyone here, since we are coming from all over the world. Everyone is very special to each other. I really hope we can keep in touch in the future:) Missing everyone already! :P Harry Lo, HONG KONG "During the time of staying here far from hometown, I feel I growing up and getting to know more about myself. It's lucky to meet all of you here even IB seems like an infinite suffer. Anyway, congratulations for graduation. We are all winners!" AmyZhang,CHINA

The smartest choice I made was coming back to EFIA for my second year after Christmas. There is nothing like a school with homework in every subject every day, strict teachers, and too smart students, and a campus with thousand rules, terrible food and curfew hours. The teachers, the food, the rules and the joy among the students is what made my high school years perfect. Margrethe Dammann, NORWAY Crazy, amazing moments, happening nowhere but here in EFIA.I am glad to meet all you guys here and one thing I have to say: You all gave me the most remarkable life, I love you =) Gina Chang, TAIWAN

"Two years have passed since we first entered. Everyone nervous and excited about what we SooMinBae,SOUTHKOREA were about to embark on. And now being at the end of this journey, I can look back at everything I have been studying in EFIA for 3 years long. When I have done here, all the friends Ive made, all the I first arrived here, I hardly imagined how tough IB laughs and all the disappointments weve all would be. Indeed, through many challenging IB shared together, and be glad. However, life goes courses, I have grown up knowledgeably and made on and so are we, and soon, we will leave to the so many international friends who support me same place as from we came, all around the unfailingly. I hope everyone will be accomplished in world. We will meet new people and make new the bright future. I will be back here someday. Jackson Nguyen, VIETNAM

"Don't mess with me! I did the IB, I am a master of procrastination."

There are memories that cling on to my brain for a long time. The ones that make me time-travel to the moment over and over in day-dreaming. Although only one year, I am already sure that the days I shared with friends, the growing up, and the laughter at late night hallway talks at my home EF will be greatly missed. Hopefully someday, I will Anzhelika Minina, RUSSIA come back to this campus after achieving my dream of being an engineer. I will remember you EF, remember me. Coming to study here, in America and particularly this school was probably one of the most important decisions in my life. Friendships that will last a lifetime. A second family. Some wise words by our EFIA Senior Class 2012 - their hopes, dreams, reflections.
It was such a wonderful journey...I can't believe that I'm done with it! There were many things happened unbelievably during these two years in this school! Three years at EFIA New York are coming to an end. But actually it was just a coincidence that I These two years of EFIA experience taught me one came to Tarrytown. My plan was to stay for only one particular thing - to act independently and be year somewhere in California. I am happy to stay responsible for my own actions. We live here, on here for this long time. During this time I made very another part of the world, kilometers away from our good friends and certainly I liked to live one hour families not to disappoint them, but make them see away from Manhattan. Therefore it was an who we truly are in this world.I dream of doing unbelievable experience and something I will something significant in this world, to accomplish suggest to everyone I meet in my life. During this something important. I do not have a step-by-step time I build a strong character, become more selfplan yet, but I certainly know that once I discover my confident and independent from my family. true potential, I will have this plan. Certainly I gained a lot of academic knowledge for my future in Switzerland. I left my home to create a AlisaBabikova,RUSSIA second one in New York! Hope to see some of you and my friends once again... Alles Gute fr die Zukunft!!! PhilippAhlbrand,GERMANY

"EFIA New York is the place I called it as my second home for the past two years. This place is not just school, but it is life. Thanks to my teachers for always encourage and make the best out of me. My best experience which makes EF is EF is about the international living, I do not just make normal friendship but long life friendship. And it does not matter where we are from, we are together as one big family. That is the memories that will go with me everywhere when I think about EFIA New York." Leah Saykaew, THAILAND "Greeted by the golden dome of Butler Hall, majestically looking down from the top of the hills the first time I arrived on camous, I knew the next two years were going to be life-changing. I learned to value life and its expectations again, be it the good or the bad; and I got to know the most incredible people from all around the world, each one of them with their own motivations and dreams and I will miss for sure. But this is what makes us global citizens of the world. Always on the move, looking for new challenges. Anywhere, anytime." Chindalay Phonsavath, GERMANY

"Altogether we have been able to solve our problems, find the right solutions, and create ideas for a better student life. And I am happy that I have been part of the student voice in this young school, and I hope this voice will get louder as years pass by.This is IT. It has been cool, sorrowful; sunnyfunny; nice-vice; ugly-snugly; graceful-painful . . . and happy-chappy and crazy-lazy for sure . . . " Kiko Macan, SPAIN It was quite a journey. Two years that passed fast, because there always was something happening. It is hard to image my life without people who were always there for me. Teachers who always supported us. To IB or not to IB that is the question. And for sure, it was a question for many of us Seniors this year. These past months have been months of struggles and uncertainty - but most of all, they are the last months of our time here at EFIA. It was a time of discovery, of new challenges; of friendships forged across all cultural barriers that will last for life. Among those who have made this experience possible is Dr. Claudia Trew, who co-founded EF International Academy New York along with Gary Julian. Back then, they created the school from scratch - and having the chance to contribute to this development as a student is something that we hope will inspire future generations as well. We are many kinds of students: the ambitious ones, the lazy ones, the procrastinating ones. However exhausting it might seem at times in the end, all that is left are the good memories. No matter where the future might lead all of us; we wish you all the best and thank you for your patience, time and dedication you have put into the school and us. Thank you, Dr. Trew.

EFIA has become our home and the people we have met here our family. No matter how long we have been here, no matter if High School Diploma, IB Diploma or both - it was an exciting and emotional journey for all of us. Smiles were exchanged (and so were homeworks). Lives and rooms were shared. Tears were shed, loved ones missed. But in all those times, we were never alone. We had our new family. Thank you to our Counselors who have guided us not only in our university application process, but also become our support and strength in our lives. You. Are. Incredible. Thank you to our teachers for their patience, their mercy and their love for teaching. You rock! Thank you to our behind-the-scenes magicians, especially Adele, Cindy and Denise - you know we love you! Last but not least, we would also like to thank Dr. Mahoney for making our last year as special as possible. No matter for how long we have been here, where we came from; we have all gathered the courage to take risks, to open up our minds, explore the world, gain new perspectives. Leaving this place behind, we might never see each other again. But as much as we will miss EFIA, we are looking forward to our future, without any regrets. As a Senior from last year said: "As we come from different places, we leave to different places."
