Hospitals can be associated
with illness, grief and fear But
the Caring Clowns see the hospi-
tal as an opportunity to change a
patients life, even if its only for a
moment.
The Caring Clowns of Centen-
nial Mills in Voorhees put on
happy faces, makeup, uniforms
and two nametags before they ar-
rive at Virtua Hospital in
Voorhees.
The Caring Clowns are not
your average circus performers
or party clowns. They do not get
paid to paint faces and blow up
balloons at childrens birthday
parties.
Anne Fennell (Doc Figit),
founder of the Caring Clowns,
sees the group as a source of
friendly interaction in a some-
times-frightening situation.

The Voorhees Sun
A taste of Italy is coming to
Voorhees. On Saturday, Oct. 13,
the New Jersey Order Sons of
Italy in America is hosting the
first Italian Festa at the Voorhees
Town Center.
Food vendors, an espresso bar,
a mini popup soccer tournament,
bocce tournament, music and
performances and even a horse
and pony ride will be a part of the
festival.
This is going to be the place to
go to eat, Voorhees Town Center
Marketing Manager Jessica
Saphire said.
You cant have a bowl of pasta
without a glass of wine. The beer
and wine garden is another fea-
ture of the festival. It will give vis-
itors a chance to taste different
types of wine and beer.
Saphire is excited to see the
food vendors and entertainment
bring a crowd to the mall. To add
to the Italian Festa, the mall will
set up a mall-wide Mercado (side-
walk) sale.
The inside of the mall will be
decorated with the colors of Italy
red, green and white.
The mall is trying to make the
event cohesive both inside and
out, Saphire said.
Festa committee member Gigi
Cinalli is looking forward to hav-
ing the festival at the Voorhees
Town Center.
She said one of the entertain-
ment highlights is going to be Re-
flections of Louie & Keely with
Tom Pizzi (a Voorhees resident)
and the Wilderness featuring Pa-
tricia Durante. Other performers
include PrimaMania!, The Amy
Faden Band, Ron DiRoma and
Nick Cinalli. All performances
will bring the sounds of Italian
music to liven up the party.
The Cherry Hill West Italian
Club will also be at the festival
performing Italian folk dances.
Between the exciting activities,
performances and Italian-Ameri-
can style food, the festival activi-
ties are set up for more than fun
and enjoyment.
Cinalli mentioned the impor-
tance of promoting and celebrat-
ing the Italian culture and to
help expose the impact Italian-
Americans have had in American
culture.
Great food and vendors will be
there to help promote the festi-
vals cultural importance, Cinalli
said.
The festival is there for the en-
tire family to enjoy. Between the

The Camden County Library
System is daring teens and
tweens to read just for fun during
Teen Read Week from Oct. 14 to
Oct. 20.
Enjoy reading in all its forms
books, magazines, e-books, audio
books and more. Its a time to en-
courage teens to visit their local
library. It came from the library
may sound a little creepy; its re-
ally an invitation for more
teens to become regular library
users.
The library is more than just
books on a shelf these days. For
those with a new e-reader such as
the Kindle or the Nook, or a new
smart phone, the library is here
to show teens and others how to
download favorite books from the
library and read them on elec-
tronic devises. There is still a se-
lection of print books available,
from Pride and Prejudice to
The Hunger Games; the library
has a book for everyone.
Dont just check out books at
the library, check out programs
made just for teens and tweens
during Teen Read Week at our dif-
ferent branch libraries.
Before, during and after the
week, teens should visit the Teen
Space on the Camden County Li-
brary Systems website under
Using the Library: Kids and
Teens from the homepage. There
is homework help on Teen
Space and other features of spe-
cial interest to teens.
Several of the library systems
branches offer teens the chance to
plan and participate in organiz-
ing teen programming through
their Teen Advisory Boards
(TAB) at Bellmawr, Haddon
Township, and Voorhees.
Teens are also invited to share
their love of reading with kids
through our Book Buddy pro-
grams at the Voorhees branch
each month. Typically, each teen
and tween volunteer is paired up
with a child to read. The volun-
teer and child share an activity
and a snack. Teens can earn cred-
its for volunteer hours.

The Grand Lodge of New Jersey of the
Order of Sons of Italy in America (OSIA)
is a fraternal or-
ganization that de-
rives its origin and
its existence from
the Supreme Lodge
of the Order Sons
of Italy in Ameri-
ca, and was created
by the State of New
Jersey in 1911. The
Grand Lodge of
New Jersey exer-
cises jurisdiction
over all lodges and
members of the
Order within the
confines of the
State.
The OSIA is the
oldest, largest,
and most demographically diverse organi-
zation of Americans of Italian heritage in
North American. It was established in the
Little Italy neighborhood of New York City
by immigrants from Italy who came to the
United States during the great Italian mi-
gration of the late 19th and early 20th cen-
turies.
During its history, the OSIA has been in-
volved in promoting immigration legisla-
tion; assisting in the assimilation process;
supporting cooperation, trade and diplo-
matic relations between the United States
and Italy; initiating social and fraternal
events; encouraging educational achieve-
ments through scholarships; serving local
communities through a variety of cultural
events and raising funds for local charities;
and providing low-cost group financial in-
vestments and insurance programs for the
benefit of the members nationwide. The
OSIA works to preserve the rich cultural
heritage of Americans of Italian descent
and represents 23 million men and women
of Italian descent across the continent.

MAYORS MESSAGE
D
id you hear everything you
needed to hear during last
weeks presidential debate? If
so, read no further. If not, youre in
luck. The debate season is just getting
started.
Three more debates are set before
voters go to the polls next month.
The first is tomorrow, Oct. 11, be-
tween Vice President Biden and GOP
hopeful Congressman Paul Ryan.
After that, President Obama and
Mitt Romney have two more meetings
scheduled: one on Oct. 16 in a town-hall
setting, and one on Oct. 22 to talk about
foreign policy.
Our question is: Does anybody really
care about these debates? With the
amount of money spent on pounding
opponents into the ground through
negative advertising, do thoughtful di-
alogues about meaningful issues actu-
ally have an impact?
Our guess is that the debates dont
carry a lot of weight these days. They
seem to be more about candidates try-
ing to get out the next Senator, I
served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack
Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of
mine. Senator, youre no Jack
Kennedy.
That, and trying to avoid gaffes and
looking silly.
Thats a shame because rational dis-
cussion of the issues would lead to bet-
ter government.
But its also the reality. We see nega-
tive, attack ads for one reason: they
work. Voters respond to them. If they
didnt work, politicians would stop
using them.
And politicians try for the memo-
rable one-liners during the debates be-
cause that is what the viewers remem-
ber and talk about. Its not possible to
thoroughly examine and condense any
candidates economic policy into a sin-
gle Tweet.
The presidential debates, as we
know them know, have been around
since 1960. They are made for TV. But,
pardon the reference, we have to ask:
Wheres the beef ?
in our opinion
Point, counterpoint
Do the presidential and vice presidential debates make a difference?
Presidential debates
The debate season has just begun. But
do they really mean anything?
Candidates seem more interested in
launching the great one-liner and
avoiding mistakes than anything else.

letters to the editor
Voorhees voters: Dont
be fooled by DiNatale
Lets fact check the Voorhees
Democratic campaign ad on page
three of the Oct. 3 edition in The
Voorhees Sun.
Committee person DiNatale
and his running mate claim in
their advertisement that under
the DiNatales proven and trust-
ed leadership, he is holding the
line on taxes!
In that claim they cite the
Voorhees budget as their
source, but do not cite the loca-
tion actual page or line.
Is that what the Voorhees budg-
et really says?
The Democrats appear to be
using the old New Jersey style po-
litical distort or lie formula.
When you have a multi-year
record (a committee persons
term is three years of accounta-
bility not just one) just distort or
lie about one year only and ignore
your entire three-year term re-
sults.
I think Voorhees voters are
smart enough not to be fooled by
DiNatales deception.
Here is what the Voorhees
Budgets (exact location and avail-
ability is online) actually states:
Mr. DiNatale was last on the
ballot in November 2009. In the
2009 Budget (Sheet 3, Line 6) the
listing of amount to be raised by
taxes for support of municipal
budget was $15,341,877. That is
the baseline tax used to measure
tax increases or decreases from
DiNatale over his entire term.
In the 2010 Voorhees Budget
(Sheet 3, Line 6) there was a tax
increase of $1,033,123 over DiNa-
tales baseline rate.
In the 2011 Voorhees Budget
(Sheet 3, Line 6), there was a tax
increase of $1,003,000 over DiNa-
tales baseline rate.
In the 2012 Voorhees Budget
(Sheet 3, Line 6) there was a tax
increase of $1,990,106 over DiNa-
tales baseline rate.
The Voorhees budgets clearly
show under Mr. DiNatales
proven and trusted leadership,
Voorhees taxpayers paid an in-
crease of $4,026,229 more in taxes
or a 26 percent increase.
The next time you see an ad
from DiNatale, ask yourself, Is
this a distortion or lie?

visitors or have visitors and dont
want to accept the condition or
medical problem, said Fennell.
With us, they can tell us some-
thing. They know its not going to
go anywhere.
Fennell jumped into action
seven years ago by joining the
Bumper T Caring Clowns or-
ganization a non-profit, volun-
teer-based organization dedicated
to making a positive impact in the
hospital atmosphere. She brought
a piece of her training and expe-
rience as a Booker T clown to
Centennial Mills.
There are currently 12 Caring
Clowns, including four recent
graduates.
According to Fennell, each
member goes through a six-week
training program. The first thing
the prospective members learn is
about protocol and HIPPA med-
ical protocol laws. Next, the group
learns how to apply makeup, and
then they are ready to shadow
Fennell at the hospital for a few
weeks.
Each clown picks his or her
own name. The only uniform as-
pect in the naming process is the
middle initial every clown has
T as his or her middle initial,
the T stands for The.
When it is time for the clowns
to visit the hospital, they have a
specific schedule.
Four clowns rotate days during
the week, pair up and cover one of
two buildings at Virtua building
A or B.
Pediatrics is one of the first
and most important visits, Fen-
nell said.
Each clown has to make sure
they are checked in at the front
desk before choosing a floor. The
clowns must also check in at the
floors nursing station. The nurs-
es notify the members which
rooms they can enter and which
ones to avoid.
Fennell said not everyone
wants a clown visiting him or her.
After they make a note of
which rooms to go to, they start
the rounds, knocking on doors to
make sure the patient wants a vis-
itor.
When you are at a hospital
you are vulnerable, they may not
want a visit from a clown, Fen-
nell said.
Caring Clown member Ray
Gunther (Doc Q Ball) said the
type of response you get after
knocking on their doors depends
on the patent.
The best people to deal with
are people with visitors, Gun-
ther said.
For Gunther, visiting the chil-
dren is his favorite part, but not
all of the clowns enjoy visiting
the children. For some, it is diffi-
cult to see sick children at the
hospital and for others the
younger kids dont appreciate the
jokes that come along with a few
of the clowns skits.
Howard Coleman (known as
Doc Quack) walks around with a
brown letter E in his pocket, of-
fering it to anyone who looks hun-
gry. Sometimes you might catch
him pulling a small, grey hare-
shaped sponge off of somebodys
head.
Dudley Cannon (known as Doc
Doodles) has a special surprise
for patients on their birthday. He
is able to sing Happy Birthday
backwards. As Cannon begins to
sing he slowly turns so his back is
facing the patient and continues
the song.
According to Coleman, the
older crowd is more appreciative
of the clowns presence. Most
children have parents to cling
onto for comfort where the adults
might not have that type of com-
fort, Coleman said.
The crew also works with the
child life specialist to keep infor-
mation about the patients and
family up to speed, Fennell said.
We work very closely with the
personnel in the hospital. Thats
why we like to also be considered
a part of the wellness team, Fen-
nell said.
There may come a time where
the Caring Clowns have to keep a
family company in a waiting
room.
The worst thing in the world
when you are in a hospital, Fen-
nell said.
The Caring Clowns are not just
clowns, they are there to listen,
comfort and aid broken spirits by
putting a smile on a patents or
even a worried family members
face.
You are not going to change
the prognosis. But you can
change the moment for them and
have them smile, Fennell said.

Brandywine Senior Living, a
premier provider of assisted liv-
ing throughout the Northeast is
putting their chefs to the test with
the Iron Chef Best of the Best at
Brandywine competition.
Chefs from every one of
Brandywine Senior Living's 23
communities will compete head
to head until a champion is
crowned on Nov. 8.
The competition was created
and organized by Bret Jefferson,
corporate director of dining serv-
ices at Brandywine Senior Liv-
ing.
We all know Brandywine
chooses quality chefs and has an
outstanding talent pool in all of
our communities. We are now
about to embark on a showcase of
all those talents with our Brandy-
wine Senior Living community
competitions. Our chef s cre-
ations will be the talk of the town
and rival to any fine dining estab-
lishment, Bret said.
Individuals from the local town
or community, Brandywine Sen-
ior Living residents, and mem-
bers from Brandywine Senior
Livings Corporate Office will
judge the chefs. The competition
started during National Assisted
Living Week. The five-week com-
petition started on Oct. 4 and con-
tinues on Oct. 11, 18 and 25. The fi-
nals are on Nov. 8. Brandywine
Senior Living CEO and president
Brenda Bacon is serving as one of
the final judges.
To become a judge or to attend
one of the competitions, go to
www.brandycare.com and contact
a Brandywine location nearest
you.
The winning chef will be fea-
tured in Brandywines new cook-
book along with having his or her
own recipe.
Putting chefs to the test
Pet food drive through Oct. 31
If you love dogs and cats, the
Camden County Animal Shelter,
Animal Welfare Association
(AWA), and Almost Home are
sponsoring a pet food drive from
Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. Working with
Camden County, the shelters will
drop off collection bins at heavily
traveled locations across the re-
gion.
Only canned pet food will be ac-
cepted and collections will be
made every week. The goal is to
have enough food to feed all the
animals at all three shelters for
two days, allowing the shelters to
use the money that would have
otherwise gone for food for those
two days to cover other operating
expenses.
Voorhees bin collection loca-
tions are at the Camden County
Library on 203 Laurel Road, the
second level of the Voorhees
Town Center Mall, and Town Hall
at the Voorhees Town Center.
Contact Maya Richmond at di-
rector@awanj.org or (856) 424-
2288 with questions or for more
information.
