ABSTRACT
DTH is a new technology and it has matured to its full potential in other parts of the world. There are many applicacion has been found everyday for exploitation of benefits of DTH

The word DTH is synoymous with transmission of digital video channel to home subscribers using a smalll dish antenna .The DTH utilizeds a technology which enables a home to receive high speed internet broadband acccess data communication , voice over internet protocol (IP) telephony and much more using an open standard Digital video Broadband (DVB) technology. The videos channels are received with a suitable set of box . Capable pf demodulating Motion picture Engineering Group(MPEG-2) standard videos. It is for the return channel required for other services such as voice over internet protocol and brodband acccess data communications , that a return channel is also required for the home terminal. The return channel via the satellite ia called RCS and is an open standard.

Hardware compatible with DVB-RCS technology are readily available in the market in both Ku-band and C-band .DVB-RCS is an international open standard for multimedia satellite network where the return data rates in access of 2 Mbps are possible using low cost user terminal . The forward link is usually at 40 Mbps.

Today ,most satellite TV customeras in developed television markets get their programming through a direct broadcast satellite (DBS) provider .such as DISH TV or DTH platform. The provider salects programs and broadcast as a set of package.Basically ,the providers goal is bring dozens or even hundreds of channel to the custmers television in a from that approximates the competition from Cable TV .Unlike earlier programming ,the high picture and stereo sound quality.Early satellite telivision was broadcast in C band -radio in the 3.4-gigaherthz(GHz) frequancy range.Digital broadcast satellite transmits progamming in Ku frequancy range(10 GHz to 14GHz)

HISTORY
In Europe, prior to the launch of Astra 1A in 1988, the term DBS was commonly used to describe the nationally-commissioned satellites planned and launched to provide TV broadcasts to the home within several European countries (e.g. BSB in the UK, TV-Sat in Germany). These services were to use the D-Mac and D2-Mac format and BSS frequencies with circular polarization from orbital positions allocated to each country. Before these DBS satellites, home satellite television in Europe was limited to a few channels, really intended for cable distribution, and requiring dishes typically of 1.2m. SES launched the Astra 1A satellite to provide services to homes across Europe receivable on dishes of just 60 cm-80 cm and, although these mostly used PAL video format and FSS frequencies with linear polarization, the DBS name slowly came to applied to all Astra satellites and services too

WORKING
In simple terms the service provider broadcasts the signal that is sent to the satellite that then transmits the signal back to earth which is picked up by your dish antenna and fed to your television set. A DTH service provider has to lease Ku-band transponders from the satellite. The encoder converts the audio, video and data signals into the digital format and the multiplexer mixes these signals. At the user end, there will be a small dish antenna and set-top boxes to decode and view numerous channels On the user's end, receiving dishes can be as small as 45 cm in diametre. DTH is an encrypted transmission that travels to the consumer directly through a satellite. DTH transmission is received directly by the consumer at his end through the small dish antenna. A set-top box, unlike the regular cable connection decodes the encrypted transmission.

DTH services advantages

The first and the most important advantage of DTH television service is that we would not be dependant on the cable operator or anybody else. We can just relax at home and watch any channel we like at any point of time. The picture quality and its resolution are also fantastic in DTHtelevision service Another advantage of DTH television service is that you would be able to subscribe only for those channels that you would like to watch. Another important factor that supports DTH television service is the reduced amount of service breakdowns. With DTH television service, signal reception would be clear and without breakdown. However, this cannot be expected from cable television operation, as breakdowns are something very common here. Even a power cut off at the cable television operators location would affect the service and the customers would be able to view any channels. Other premium services like movies on request are available with DTH television service through which customers can even subscribe for movies they like. This feature offers movies for a very limited price that would work out to be much cheaper than watching the same movie in a cinema hall. This feature would help you and your family to watch recent popular movies by staying at home. There are no chances of comparing this feature with the quality of cable television service, as they do not offer this service at all.

Free DBS services

India's national broadcaster, Doordarshan, promotes a free-to-air DBS package as "DD Direct Plus", which is provided as in-fill for the country's terrestrial transmission network. It is broadcast from Insat 4B at 93.5E and contains about 57 FTA channels.
