Healthy environments and increased household income

Innovative elements l Rehabilitation of important infrastructure contributes to revitalizing the productivity of degraded lands for agriculture, forestry and fisheries l Supports food security and further develops the skills of farm and fisherfolk households l Provides short-term employment opportunities, for both women and men, to bridge the income gap between harvests l Improves household incomes and supports local economies and small enterprises l Increases community involvement and creates ownership over assets l Utilizes locally available materials and lowers costs of the asset when compared to similar contracted projects Where can this be applied: l farm-to-market roads l upland foot trails l communal irrigation canals l mangrove areas l urban waterways l seawalls and watershed areas l Productivity enhancing technologies, such as the use of certified and hybrid seeds, organic and appropriate fertilizers, climate-proof vegetable production structures and breeds of high-yielding freshwater fish What has been achieved so far by this innovation of the EnRD Program: l 46,000+ households from 26 LGUs in Leyte and Southern Leyte provinces have benefited directly and indirectly l 50% savings in construction of farm-to-market roads from PhP5,000 to PhP2,500 per lineal meter;

rehabilitation of irrigation systems from PhP3,200 to PhP1,600 l provincial and a municipal fish hatcheries were A constructed producing and distributing an average of 5 million fingerlings annually l kilometers of irrigation canals servicing almost 11 1,000 hectares of rice farms were concreted and combined with support to households to use productivity enhancing technologies (i.e. use of certified and hybrid seeds, organic and appropriate fertilizers, climate-proof vegetable production structures). This resulted to a 23% increase in rice yields per hectare per cropping season, and a total production increase by up to 250% with now two or three croppings instead of just one l kilometers of farm-to-market roads rehabilitated. 62 In Anawahan, the 6 kilometers farm-to-market road has decreased transportation cost of farm products by at least 20% l kilometers of upland foot trails constructed/ 40 rehabiliated l meters of seawall constructed 600 l kilometers of urban waterways cleared 7
