We understand that every students educational needs are different. Thats why we have created our courses in such a way that you will be well prepared to handle the dynamic requirements of the art and design industries when you graduate. Our modular course structure offers you maximum flexibility while giving you the opportunity to pursue cross-disciplinary modules. Because we know, gaining a broader perspective and greater competence will only work to your advantage.
International Baccalaureate
Talent runs through everything we do at NAFA. From our faculty who designs the courses we offer, to students who choose to pursue their dreams with us, you will see that our 11 full-time Diploma courses are geared to nurture both aptitude and attitude developing the artistic talents of over 2,300 students from diverse backgrounds across 28 different territories. In addition, NAFA conducts Bachelors Degree courses in collaboration with reputable universities in the United Kingdom and United States of America. We also offer a BA (Hons) Visual Communication with Business programme in partnership with SIM University (UniSIM) of Singapore.
There are eight academic departments in NAFA. Each of them forming a complete cosmopolitan and professional academia ready to point you in the right direction of creativity. Our Office of Academic Affairs oversees these departments and provides academic leadership on new initiatives. Dedicated to setting high standards and sharing invaluable knowledge, over 60% of our lecturers are equipped with a Masters Degree or higher qualification. Loughborough University was originally founded in 1909 as Loughborough Technical Institute, later known as Loughborough College. In 1966, the College of Technology received its Royal Charter and became Loughborough University of Technology. In 1998, the university amalgamated with the College of Art and Design. Loughborough University is a centre of excellence in teaching and learning, research and enterprise, and is one of the top-rated universities in the UK. It won the Times Higher Best Student Experience Award in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, as voted for by students themselves. Choose from a range of major studies that cross disciplines but yet remain specialised in your chosen field of study: Environmental Design Major
This major study in Environmental Design involves our constructed external environment mainly Landscape and Architecture. The scope of Landscape and Architecture is presented as a single non-segregated discipline. Through studio sessions, tutorials and projects, you will be trained to develop skills in design concept creation, aesthetic appreciation and keen understanding of technology. What can you expect upon completion of this programme? A fulfilling career or the chance to pursue further studies in the corresponding fields of Architecture, Landscape Design or related spatial design disciplines. Exhibition Design Major When you choose to major in Exhibition Design, you will learn to conceptualise various types of exhibition spaces. Gain an in-depth education as you make your mark on projects such as merchandise displays, promotional booths, retail showrooms and museums. You will learn to develop innovative display solutions and experiences for commercial and communication purposes. Essential theories and principles relating to branding, marketing communication, fabrication process and project management are complemented with other core subjects. Rich, multifaceted and encompassing a broad range of disciplines, 3D design at NAFA helps you develop your own individual design language as you learn to think critically and solve problems using creative methodologies. Here, we focus on learning through making and discourse, and exploring new opportunities through interfacing with the world.
Furniture Design Major As Furniture Design evolves with shifts in culture, technology and trends, there is a growing need to investigate emerging challenges that these changes will bring. This course will push you to explore and experience the process and spectrum of Furniture Design as functional objects of space, as well as interaction expression, cultural icons and symbols of emotions in the context of personal, public or commercial environment. You will develop competencies in analysis, design synthesis, judgment, articulation of concepts and communication of ideas in furniture design within the spatial context. The course includes prototyping, ergonomics and knowledge in industrial fabrication and production, and marketing. Minors in Interior Design and Exhibition Design are included in this course. Interior Design Major Principles and theories of design in residential, commercial, corporate and hospitality design are yours to explore, master and apply in this Interior Design Major. Through addressing the knowledge required to create exceptional spaces, you will gain a strong grounding in understanding spatial relationship, by developing sensitivity and appropriate responses to human behaviour, site and purpose. To further enhance your understanding of various aspects of spatial typology, you will undertake minors in Furniture Design and Exhibition Design. Diploma in 3D Design
The Diploma in 3D Design fosters creative thinking, integrative practice and technical competency. As a student in this department, you will be provided a multidisciplinary learning experience with a global perspective; you will acquire knowledge that is applicable across disciplines and relevant to all aspects of 3D design which varies from personal (product) to public (environment) domains. Studio practice is a key component to your learning, supported by a range of subjects that form the basic structure of this course.

You will be encouraged to master special techniques such as enameling, repousse and casting. Object Design Major Embark on this Object Design Major that is centred on the creation of consumer lifestyle products and merchandise, from personal to interior accessories focusing on the appreciation of materials, elemental technologies, crafts and sustainable production methods. Departing from conventional high volume production and technology-led mass consumption products, this course aims to set the pace of integrating design, culture and business in an aggregated industry landscape and consumption environment. You will undergo essential modules in basic business management, brand marketing, production and distribution. All of which, designed to develop your skills and competence in the setting up of small entrepreneurial business, or to lead as design business managers who bridge creativity and business in industries and services that engage and rely on design.

Diploma in Dance
This is a comprehensive 3-year course that comprises 120 credits. Students who choose to embark on this 3-year comprehensive programme are eligible to apply to undertake the final year of the BFA in Dance course at Purchase College, State University of New York, USA. In this course, you have the option to select Choreography, Performance (Ballet/Non-Ballet), or Teaching as an area of emphasis instead of the complete programme. You will then undertake the core curriculum enhanced with a series of compulsory modules specific to the programme or your chosen area of emphasis. Established in 1984, the Department of Dance has gained recognition as a leading provider of qualified dance practitioners for Singapores dance industry. We are distinctive in our contemporary East-West posture, focusing on Western and Asian dance techniques, creative and contextual studies that include intercultural and multidisciplinary collaborative opportunities. In addition, we reinforce our education framework with rigorous practical technique training in Ballet and Modern Dance. Regular artist-in-residencies by our degree partner Purchase College, USA as well as frequent local and international guest artists also provide students remarkable opportunities to participate in global dance trends. Today, we are set to prepare dynamic dance professionals locally and beyond with a fresh Diploma programme leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree with the internationally renowned Purchase College of Arts, State University of New York (USA). This first-of-its-kind BFA Dance degree programme affords selected NAFA Diploma in Dance graduates the opportunity to study at Purchase College in the USA for a year.

Animation This curriculum provides you with the necessary tools to animate your artistic vision into virtual reality. You will begin to learn and acquire conceptual and development skills, and basic animation principles. These will be further enhanced with practical skills on industry norm software packages to enable you to transform your ideas into 2D & 3D animation. You will also learn the fundamentals of storytelling, video and sound design and editing, and character design and be exposed to animation production workflow. Graphic Design This curriculum equips you with conceptual problem solving skills based on visual literacy, software competency, and a good foundation in aesthetic principles. You will gain a wealth of knowledge in researching and strategising creative and innovative solutions to customise purposeful and effective communications for a variety of products, services, brands, and media platforms. You will also learn to appreciate and tap on new media to reach targeted audience. Illustration Design This curriculum engages you with the practice of rudimentary of line, colour and form, and in a range of media through building on image development, rendering and ideation skills. You will apply all stages of design process, from initial sketches to presentation, and encouraged to develop your personal illustration style. Illustration projects of different genres will also be introduced for you to hone your interpretive skills in both traditional and digital platforms, and to develop your multidisciplinary problem-solving skills in social and cultural contexts. A host of complementary yet essential skills in design and layout, editorial publishing, and design and marketing will also be keenly developed in you. Interactive Media This curriculum introduces you to the principles, techniques, tools and processes for designing interactions and objects, and understanding their impact and importance in the world of digital media. You will undertake projects that seek to investigate the creative, expressive and aesthetic forms and content of new media and media systems, including the preproduction, production and postproduction phases of work.

Video Production This curriculum stresses the practical, conceptual and theoretical aspects of video production. You will be trained in areas such as directing and working with actors, creative storytelling, producing skills, camera and lighting techniques, as well as the various aspects of post-production. While preparing you with foundational concepts, you will be given the opportunity to actively produce a wide variety of video productions, enhancing your skills in a practical experiences. As part of your graduation portfolio, you will work on an individual film that showcases your newlydeveloped conceptual and practical skills in bringing ideas to life.
The programme of this course also includes a 6-week residential study visit to Loughborough University, during which our British counterpart will provide you with professional inputs to refine your dissertation works and artistic ideas. This visit will also provide you with invaluable exposure to trends and practices in international art and design.

Fashion design today encompasses much more than the creation of clothing and accessories. At the Department of Fashion Studies, we train you to be a complete designer with impressive design knowledge and vocabulary. You will emerge ready to face the challenges of designing in the 21st century as we help you develop the content and context in your work, and an understanding of its relevance in todays world. Moving you to the forefront of what we do best, we put you in touch with methods to create collections and build technical skills at the same time.
A top graduate of the NAFA Fashion Design Diploma course, Max was also a winner of the Singapore Young Designer contest in 2007. He then joined Spring Singapores scheme for young entrepreneurship, The Incubator, and started his own label max.tan to express his design philosophy of soft geometry in clothing. In July 2010, he was one of the very few young international designers selected to showcase his works at Modafabriek in Amsterdam where he secured orders from European buyers who were impressed with his designs. Priscilla Tan Graduating as the top student of the NAFA Fashion Design Diploma course, Priscilla went on to garner top honour in the TOPSHOP/TOPMAN Fresh Graduate Showcase in 2007. She has since interned as a designer with leading British retailer, TOPSHOP in London. Translating her talent and experience into living her dream, she runs her own successful label, CHALK.

Art today extends far beyond the traditional disciplines of painting, drawing, and sculpture. The Department of Fine Arts started offering a sculpture and western painting diploma programme in 1938. Now, our programmes offer an integrated curriculum that challenges notions of what art can be, fostering your personal artistic growth and aesthetic development. Were here to give you clear sense of direction to make art in todays constantly evolving context, offering you the guidance and resources you need to discover your own voice.

Chinese Ink Painting Explore different approaches and aesthetic appreciation in Chinese Ink Painting, as well as understand the brief history of the development of Chinese Art. This course will introduce you to myriad styles in Chinese painting. Sculpture This course analyses the principles of form, light, rhythm and sculpturing techniques in the construction of threedimensional models. It places emphasis on encouraging you to develop skills in the various media and your sensibility to all facets of the environment, including possible origins for sculptural ideas. Installation and earth art will also introduce you to a wider range studies on spatial concepts. Photography Gain an understanding into the anatomy of the camera and lenses in this course. You will develop skills in basic camera and darkroom techniques for black and white photography, familiarising yourself with the use of studio lighting and creative darkroom techniques for artistic purposes. This course also serves as an introduction to a new media in the art field aside from painting. Ceramics From a basic study to in-depth understanding of clay as a medium of expression, this course introduces you to hand-building and wheel techniques, plaster mould-making skills and glaze chemistry. You will be encouraged to explore forms, textures, colours and develop your own aesthetics with clay.
Printmaking This course introduces you to basic printmaking techniques and materials of printing. In this course, you will be expected to be adequately skilled and strongly motivated towards keen individual expression with the printing mediums: Wood-cut, Lino-cut, Monoprint, Silk-screen, Dry-point, Etching, Aquatint, Engraving, Rocker (Mezzotint), Photo-etching and Lithography.
A picture of inspiration
Our alumni have fared exceptionally well both locally and in the international art scene. Their flair for the extraordinary continue to be showcased in numerous exhibitions and the accolades presented to them. Most notably, our 1994 graduate, Ming Wong represented Singapore at the 53rd Venice Biennale, Italy in 2009 with his artwork entitled: Life of Imitation. His participation in the show not only garnered him a prestigious award from the Biennale organiser but opened up a world of opportunities in countries such as Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, Japan, Korea, Spain, Taiwan and ISA. Graduating in 2010, Sculpture Major alumni, Michael Goo emerged as the winner of the France + Singapore New Generation artists (FSNGA) programme in the same year. Just one year later in 2011, he was given a fully sponsored solo exhibition in Alliance Francaise de Singapour. In the same year, the distinguished 30th UOB Painting Of the Year Award was presented to Gong Yao Min for his work, My Dream Land. We also have the honour of our alumni joining our department as part-time lecturers. They include Joshua Yang, Fiona Koh, and Justin Loke of art collective Vertical Submarine, who were presented with the prestigious Singapore Presidents Young Talents Award in 2009.

Access Course
The Access Course runs from January each year and provides one semester of study for young musicians after secondary schools in Singapore to prepare them for full-time study in music. It is designed especially for those who have participated fully in the secondary school co-curricular music programme such as Chinese Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Orchestra, Choir and Ensembles. Should you wish to develop your instrumental foundation, prior to entry to the 3-year Diploma in Music programme and advanced degree study, we highly recommend this course.

General Requirements All applicants are required to sit for the NAFA Admission Test/Audition. Applicants unable to furnish documentary evidences showing that they have met the English proficiency requirement as stipulated in Section 2.3 below are required to sit for the NAFA English Admission Test.
Music Audition Perform two contrasting works, scales and aural tests (standard equivalent to ABRSM Grade VIII) on their intended principal study. Theatre Audition Audition on voice, speech, body movement, singing, acting and improvisation plus a solo performance of the candidates choice. 2.2 Educational Qualification The general requirement is Singapore-Cambridge GCE O Level with at least 4 grade-C6 or better grade subjects, excluding English Language, or International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, or Relevant Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Nitec qualifications listed in Section 4. 2.3 English Proficiency The requirement for admission to all NAFA diploma courses, except the Diploma in Dance and the Diploma in Theatre (Mandarin Drama) is Grade C6 or better in the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O Level English Language, or TOEFL 500 or better, or IELTS Band 5 or higher, or Pass in NAFA English Admission Test, or Qualifications equivalent to any of the above. Selection Criteria Admissions are based primarily on applicants scores in the NAFA Admission Test/Audition, educational qualifications and English proficiency. Special consideration may be given to applicants who marginally fail to meet some of the requirements but fare well in the NAFA Admission Test/Audition.

Module Exemption Exemption of a NAFA diploma module may be granted to new students who have, prior to being admitted to NAFA, taken and passed identical or equivalent module(s) in another institution. The granting of exemption may be subject to passing a portfolio interview, audition or test. No more than 60 modular credits can be exempted for any student. Applicants must submit their applications for module exemption together with their applications for admission.

The NAFA Admission Test/Audition Passing the NAFA Admission Test/Audition is a necessary condition for admission. 3D Design Test Three papers in 2 hours and 45 minutes - object design, space design plus a short essay. Arts Management Test One-hour paper to test ability to express some views on arts. Design & Media Test One paper to be completed in 3 hours on drawing and creative conceptualisation with a given theme. The Academy may offer Tuition Grant to SPR and international applicant with outstanding results during his/her entrance test/audition, subject to availability. Payment Tuition Fee must be made payable to Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The students name, NRIC/Passport number and contact number must be clearly indicated on the reverse side of the cheque or cashiers order. Fees should be paid within the specified period stated in the Letter of Offer or the official invoice. A late payment charge of S$15.00 per month will be levied if the fees are not paid by the due date, or if the cheque is returned by the bank and a replacement is not received by the due date. The curriculum of all diploma courses is structured for a study period of 3 years. Under exceptional circumstances, students are allowed up to 5 years to complete a diploma course. However, students who fail to meet any of the following requirements at the end of an academic year will not be allowed to continue their studies at NAFA: To attain at least 20 credits by the end of the 1st candidature year. To attain at least 45 credits by the end of the 2nd candidature year. To attain at least 72 credits by the end of the 3rd candidature year. To attain at least 100 credits by the end of the 4th candidature year. To meet all graduation requirements by the end of the 5th candidature year.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from a diploma course, a student is required to attain at least a total of 120 credits (including those carried by the exempted modules, if any) as well as to meet the following requirements: Academy requirement To pass 3 of the 8 modules on Singapore Arts Scene required for the chosen diploma course. Course-specific requirement To pass all compulsory and elective modules specifically required for the chosen diploma course. Cross-disciplinary elective requirement To pass sufficient number of cross-disciplinary electives so as to earn the minimum number of cross-disciplinary elective credits specified for the chosen diploma course. Limit on number of provisional passes No more than 3 modules that are completed with the provisional pass grade E.

The Academy reserves the right to de-register the student if outstanding fees remained unpaid for 3 weeks after the issuance of the warning letter by NAFA Finance Branch Department. The student may be reinstated after a satisfactory explanation is provided and all outstanding fees including the late payment charge are paid in full. Even if a sponsor has undertaken to pay all fees, the student maintains ultimate and sole responsibility to the Academy for any outstanding amounts. Late submission and payment will not be accepted by the Academy as this will lead to a delay in the processing of applications.

Scholarships and Awards Academic Scholarships are awarded to students with outstanding academic records and have an excellent track record of achievements in the Arts. These are prestigious awards and are given out only to top students of each course. Entry Scholarships and financial assistance schemes are available for students with outstanding academic performance and have excellent track records of achievements in the arts. Selected students will enjoy waiver of tuition fees from a range of $1,000 to $4,000. Only an applicant who has been offered a place in NAFA needs to apply. Fee Protection Diploma courses offered by NAFA are publicly-funded and therefore all fees are exempted from the Fee Protection Scheme under the EduTrust requirements of the Council for Private Education.
5.1.1 Students can use their own or their parents CPF savings to pay for their tuition fee. The withdrawal limit for education is up to 40% of the accumulated Ordinary Account savings, or the remaining balance in the Ordinary Account after setting aside amounts reserved for housing or other schemes (if any), whichever is the lower, and subject to the amount of tuition fee payable. 5.1.2 Students who are not on tuition grant (ie paying full fees) are not allowed to use their CPF savings to pay for their tuition fee. 5.1.3 To find out more or to apply for the CPF Education Scheme, please go to http://mycpf.cpf.gov.sg/Members/ Gen-Info/FAQ/Education/EDNHigh.htm 5.2 Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) (For Singapore Citizens)
