DFG-????

The DFG is the self-governing organization for science and research in Germany. It serves all branches of science and the humanities. In organizational terms, the DFG is an association under private law. Its membership consists of German research universities, non-university research institutions, scientific associations and the Academies of Science and the Humanities. The DFG receives the large majority of its funds from the states and the Federal Government, which are represented in all Grants Committees. At the same time, the voting system and procedural regulations guarantee science-driven decisions

Area of work

MISSION STATEMENT- 'In meeting its responsibilities as a research funding

organization, the DFG must remain abreast of current developments in higher education. In doing so, the DFG is able to address challenges such as the need to provide sustainable support for young researchers, the interdisciplinarisation of the sciences and humanities, and support for networking in the field of research.'

'It serves all branches of science and the humanities'

Area of work
Best Projects
The chief task of the DFG is to select the best research projects by scientists and academics at universities and research institutions on a competitive basis and to finance these projects. Projects are presented by scientists and academics or by universities in a proposal dealing with their chosen topics from a particular discipline or taking an interdisciplinary approach. In a multi-layered decision making process, the proposal is evaluated by voluntary reviewers exclusively according to scientific criteria; on the basis of this expert review, it is assessed by chosen members of the Review Board, and the final decision is taken by the Grants Committee. In this way, DFG funding guarantees quality-based differentiation in the German research system. As a consequence, the DFG is a cornerstone of Germanys strength as a research location and also helps to shape the European research area.

Early Career Support

The DFG honors the best researchers with funding and, at the same time, gives them the means and freedom necessary for successful research. One of the DFGs key objectives is the promotion of young scientists and researchers and it therefore offers them programmes which provide appropriate support at every phase of their qualification. It is especially committed to the early independence of young researchers, and supports the acquisition of talented scientists and academics from at home and abroad for German research. The DFG funds excellent science without regard to extra-scientific factors. Equal treatment of men and women and broad representation of the scientific disciplines in the self-government of the DFG ensure the diversity and originality required for outstanding research.

Interdisciplinary Cooperation
The DFG supports projects from all scientific subject areas and especially promotes interdisciplinary cooperation between researchers. DFG funding enables cooperation between researchers from all branches of the science system as well as the formation of internationally conspicuous priorities at universities and non-university research institutions. The foundation actively encourages international research cooperation: all of its programmes promote cooperation between scientists and academics in Germany and their colleagues abroad. It places special emphasis on collaboration in the scientific community in the European Research Area. The DFG funds knowledge-oriented research, and it welcomes and supports the cooperation of science with those who apply science in all areas of social life. This includes the interaction of scientific findings with industry and institutions like museums, academies of music, hospitals, and in public-private partnerships.

Policy Advice
The DFG gives policy advice to parliaments, governments and public institutions on scientific issues. As the voice of science in political and social discourse, it counsels and partakes in political decision making processes with scientific expertise. With the deliberations of its Senate Commissions and the publication of its findings, the DFG makes recommendations concerning fundamental issues in science and concerning the responsible application of scientific findings in society. For this purpose, its regulations on good scientific practice provide internationally recognized guidelines.

Central Research Facilities

"Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (IFQ)" aims to improve the information available on the general conditions for performing DFG-funded research, the execution of such research and its results. European Liaison Office of the German Research Organizations with premises both in Bonn and Brussels, KoWi is the liaison office of all German public research organizations for EU research policy. KoWi is based on a non-profit association which is financed by the DFG. Their mission is to facilitate access to European funding schemes for German researchers. Research vessel Merian provides a multi-disciplinary research platform that widens the spectrum of possible operation in winter to the ice-bound regions of the North Atlantic and Baltic. Research vessel Meteor serves basic German open sea research worldwide, in collaboration with other countries active in this area. The investigations span interdisciplinary research topics that scientists from universities and federal and state research institutions jointly conduct.

Publications

General Publications White Papers on the current conditions on German Science Statistical Documentation on Research Funding Publications by Senate Commissions like those on Investigation of Health Hazards of Chemical Compounds in the work area, Genetic Research, Biodiversity Research, etc Publications by DFG divisions like by the Scientific Library Services and Information System Divisions, Internal Affairs Division, Research Careers Division, etc Position Papers Other Publications like Brochures published by Alliance of Scientific Organization and German Research Specials.

Our Opportunity
DFG Office India
The scope and significance of the cooperation between German and Indian researchers has increased substantially in the past years. To keep pace with the growing trend it is necessary to increase the awareness of the research environment in the partner countries. The mutual exchange of information on universities, research institutions and funding opportunities will further intensify Indo-German academic and research cooperation. The DFG Delhi office, along with its branch in Hyderabad, is striving to achieve this. Apart from coordinating and supporting existing projects, the DFG brings together eminent researchers from both countries with each side complementing the other, thereby creating synergy. The DFG Delhi Office is undertaking these tasks jointly with the existing Indian partner institutions - the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA).

Senate

The Senate is the statutory body of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) responsible for science policy. It attends to matters of general concern in research, promotes cooperation in research, advises government, parliaments and public authorities by issuing scientifically founded statements and promotes the interests of German research in relation to international science and the humanities. The Senate of the DFG has 39 members from the scientific and academic communities. While the President of the German Rectors Conference, the President of the Union of the German Academies of Sciences and Humanities and the President of the Max Planck Society are members of the Senate by right of office, the remaining 36 members are elected by the General Assembly for three-year terms. The Presidents of the Hermann von Helmholtz Society of German Research Centers and the Fraunhofer Society as well as the Chairman of the Research Council are permanent guests of the Senate.

Joint Committee

The Joint Committee is the DFGs main decision-making body. It bases its final research-policy decisions that relate to the DFG on resolutions passed by the DFGs Senate. These especially pertain to decisions regarding the DFGs budget and the general development of its funding policy.

General Assembly

DFG membership is made up of research universities, major research institutes, the academies of sciences and humanities as well as a number of scientific associations. Each member organization is represented by one delegate at the General Assembly, which convenes once a year. The General Assembly sets the guidelines and policies for the work of the DFG, receives and examines the annual report and annual account, approbate the Executive Committee, elects the President and other members of the Executive Committee and Senate, and decides on the acceptance of new members into the DFG.
