ISO Adopts SKF Bearing Life Calculations

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has adopted SKF Life Theory in its upcoming update to ISO 281. ISO 281 has moved to final approval stages. The standard is defined: ISO 281 Rolling bearings -- Dynamic load ratings and rating life abstract Specifies methods of calculating the basic dynamic load rating of rolling bearings, manufactured from hardened steel, as well as the basic rating life and the adjusted rating life. Does not apply to designs where the rolling elements operate directly on a shaft or housing surface. The committee's listed target date for adoption and publication of this ISO 281 update is May 2007, so it would become ISO 281:2007. However, other sources have said ISO 281 could come as early as this coming month, July 2006. The new version will replace ISO 281:1990 as modified in 2000. ISO 281:1990 itself replaced ISO 281:1977. SKF Life Theory has already been incorporated in the German standard DIN ISO 281, as of 2004. SKF said the current Life Theory had its roots in 1980's work and has been gradually refined since then through research and testing. The company credits Life Theory for introducing the idea of a fatigue limit as a major factor impacting bearing service life. Beyond that, deeper research revealed methods for quantifiably determining the detrimental effects of lubrication and contamination on bearing service life. The new ISO 281 incorporates a new service life formula which, for the first time, takes into account SKF's work on fatigue limit, lubrication and contamination, all as defined by fundamental SKF Life Theory, as refined and updated. Historically, SKF's influences have been central parts of the ISO, DIN, ANSI, AFBMA, and other standard bearing life calculations. The initial 1962 ISO standard for bearing life simply implemented SKF's Palmgren bearing life calculations. That work is famously attributed to Arvid Palmgren and Gustaf Lundberg's groundbreaking 1947 and 1952 publications, Dynamic Capacity of Rolling Bearings. The papers were based on Lundberg and Palmgren's development of Palmgren's first research and publication (The Service Life of Ball Bearings, 1924), and incorporating Weibull's 1939 research into material failures. The first scientific step toward bearing life calculations is generally attributed to 1881 work by Hertz, followed up by late 1890's fatigue testing work by Stribeck. Stribeck, and later Goodman in 1912, specifically incorporated load ratings, size, and bearing design into life calculations. Currently, there are more than 50 ISO standards relating to bearings. While ISO 281 deals with dynamic load ratings, ISO 76 deals with static load ratings. Just this past month, May 2006, the organization adopted and published ISO 76:2006. ISO 76:2006 specifies methods of calculating the basic static load rating and the static equivalent load for rolling bearings within the size ranges shown in the relevant ISO standards, manufactured from contemporary, commonly used, high quality, hardened bearing steel in accordance with good manufacturing practice and basically of conventional design as regards the shape of the rolling contact surfaces. Calculations carried out in accordance with ISO 76:2006 do not yield satisfactory results for bearings in which, because of application conditions and/or internal design, there is a considerable truncation of the area of contact between the rolling elements and the ring raceways. The same limitation applies where application conditions cause deviations from a normal load distribution in the bearing, for example misalignment, preload or extra large clearance or where special surface treatment or coatings are used. Where there is reason to assume that such conditions prevail, the user should consult the bearing manufacturer for recommendations and the evaluation of the static equivalent load. ISO 76:2006 is not applicable to designs where the rolling elements operate directly on a shaft or housing surface, unless that surface is equivalent in all respects to the bearing surface it replaces. Double-row radial bearings and double-direction thrust bearings are, when referred to in ISO 76:2006, presumed to be symmetrical. In addition, guidelines are given for static safety factors to be applied in heavy loaded applications. Other related standards, covering Static and dynamic load ratings for linear motion roller bearings were last updated and adopted in 2004 (ISO 14728-1:2004 and ISO 14728-2:2004).

About ISO (from the eBearing.com Glossary of Bearing Industry Terms) Established in 1947 to address the problem of divergent standards for machinery, equipment, goods and services. ISO is a nongovernmental, worldwide federation of national standards bodies from more than 140 countries, one from each country. ISO's mission is to promote the development of standardization and related activities in the world with a view to facilitating the international exchange of goods and services, and to developing cooperation in the spheres of intellectual, scientific, technological and economic activity. ISO's work results in international agreements which are published as International Standards. Rather than the acronym IOS, the organization adopted the word Iso. Derived from the Greek isos, iso means equal, and is the root of the prefix iso- in terms such as isometric. ISO is very clear in stating its mission, that it develops International Standards but does not operate any schemes for assessing conformance with them.
