The Strathmore Municipal Library has
managed to pull off a projected balanced
budget for 2013. The budget will leave
them with a whopping $11 to transfer into
the reserves.
The budget highlights include revenues
of $304,261, assuming there is zero growth
in grants. Expenses work out to $304,250,
which provide a one per cent cost of liv-
ing increase in staff salaries and benefts,
and $1,500 in capital expenses, proffered
mainly for furniture replacement.
Since 1994 the numbers have almost
doubled in patronage use, library use, cir-
culation, and interlibrary loans to name a
few. Despite all of the increases in num-
bers, the library is still working the same
per capita grant they have worked with
since 94.
Jesse Traquair, Director of Library Ser-
vices with the Strathmore Municipal Li-
brary, and board member Jim Greer made
a presentation to council at the Oct. 3
meeting to discuss the obvious problem.
Greer said they were there to ask council
to direct administration to look over the
information presented and have it brought
to the fall budget meeting.
A question about libraries becoming a
thing of the past was posed to Traquair.
I honestly dont think we are going to
see the end of print or the end of libraries
anytime in the near future. In fact since
2001the number of books published
per annum has substantially increased
and theres an almost insatiable world
wide demand for reading material and I
see the library as playing an important
role in that demand in the foreseeable fu-
ture, said Traquair.
Because the librarys per capita grant has
not increased since 1994 an adjustment
for infation would see the rate sitting at
$19 from $13.40. The library is essentially
sitting at a rate of about $5.60 per person
below the rate of funding approved by
council in 1994. Greer and Traquair were
proposing an increase of $10 per capita
over the next fve years. The presenta-
tion has been accepted as information to
be reviewed by administration and to be
brought back with possible actions for
council to consider at the fall workshop.

The Carseland Fire Department
(CFD) gave the County verbal notice
at the Oct. 4 council meeting that they
want out of the Strathmore Rural Fire
Association to set up as an indepen-
dent entity.
The association membership voted
unanimously on April 26, 2012 to split
the membership. The present situation
between the County of Wheatland and
the Strathmore Rural Fire Association
is hampering the CFD operating and
expansion goals, due to their links to
the association.
Carseland wants a fair separation
from the membership, said Fire Chief
Curt Emde. We ask the county to sup-
port what the public want and move
the association forward.
Emde said that the CFD wasnt con-
sulted prior to the purchase of the
Strathmore fre equipment and is not
part of the resulting debt load. There
are no outstanding loans on the equip-
ment used in the Carseland fre hall.
He told council that the CFD is ready,
willing and able to stand on its own.
The CFD stands behind their broth-
er department of Strathmore Rural
Fire Department (SRFD), but indicate
the situation ties their hands behind
their backs.
We hold no animosity to the Strath-
more Rural Fire Department or the As-
sociation, said Emde.
He said if worst case scenarios led
to the SRFD being non-operational,
the CFD is open to any area volun-
teers that would like to serve, until
the situation is resolved. He said while
coverage of part of the SRFD rescue
zone might be feasible, the entire zone
would be too far for the CFD crews to
respond to effectively. It would delay
response time, jeopardize property
and possibly lives.

After just over a year of planning, the
Strathmore Seed Cleaning plant broke
ground at its new home. It is located
just north of the Hwy 1 and Hwy 21
junction.
The concrete is set to be poured this
month and the hope is to fll the build-
ing shortly after.
Well, were ready to start. Our build-
ing has arrived and its 70 by 150 by 40
feet tall and so thats here and weve
got some bins up on the site that were
selling to members and were ready to
go, said Kelly Wheeler, Chairman of
the board.
The cleaning machinery is on order
from the United States.
The previous plant is 37-years-old
and the time had come to update it.
Wheeler had previously stated they
were putting patches on patches and
the time to start new had come.
The new plant will have double the
capacity of the old plant. It will clean
seed better resulting in a better product
for and from local farmers.
The start of every good crop is good
seed, the better the seed the better your
crop as a rule so this is where it all
starts, said Wheeler.
Keith is an expert at cleaning seed
and treating seed, and he prepares it
for going in the ground.
The colour sorter is going to make
a huge difference, ergot the last couple
of years has been pretty bad, and no-
body can clean it out, said Wheatland
County Reeve Glenn Koester.
We have a new terminal down there
in Gleichen and this will give them an
option to haul clean product.
The colour sorter will sort the seeds
based on their colour, it will pull all of
the foreign material out of the seed, so
all thats left is pure seed.
Its a necessity and theyre building
a top-of-the-line outft here, so it will
be benefcial to the agriculture industry
and to the county for sure, said Wheat-
land County Councillor Ken Sauve.
The County of Wheatland council
unanimously passed Bylaw 2012-78
on August 21, 2012, which authorized
Wheatland County to borrow money
from the Alberta Capital Finance Au-
thority (ACFA) to fnance the plant.
The money was given by way of de-
benture issue, to pay for the cost of
construction. The total cost of the proj-
ect amounts to 4.5 million, with two
million put up by the Strathmore Seed
Cleaning Plant. The county will pay 2.5
million to ACFA in 30 equal semi-annu-
al installments.
Shares in the plant are worth $1675,
which represents approximately 320
acres of farmland.

CJAY92 radio hostess Keira McDonald was in town on Oct.
4, to award Dave Lyall the title of Hometown Hero.
A hero is someone who shows courage and strength facing
diffculty or pain, and Lyall fts the qualifcation.
Lyall and his family and manage the Joeys Only here in
Strathmore, and also a mobile catering unit. Additionally, he
operates the caf in the Strathmore Legion. Lyall is an active
member of the local Lions. When his wife Alexs brother Josh
Hobbs was in need, the family stepped up and took him un-
der their roof. When Lyalls father was suffering from cancer
and then unexpectedly passed away due to a motorcycle
accident last month, Lyall stepped in to manage his dads
Joeys Only restaurant in High River. Lyall says when life
the use of pole spurs to climb utility poles, bucket
truck lifts and helicopters dropping trainees onto
the top of towers.
The centre would be built in two stages. The frst
would be the training area with 19 different types
of pole and tower structures that employees would
encounter in work situations.
The second stage would move the current Cal-
gary feld offce into a newly built facility adjacent
to the training area. AltaLink is looking forward
to contributing to the community and cooperating
closely with them. With 50 per cent of Canadian
employees within one to fve years of retirement,
AltaLink is preparing for training eventualities.
They are currently conducting public consulta-
tions ending with a County of Rockyview public
hearing in the spring 2013. They hope to start
building by November 2013 and complete the en-
tire project by 2015. More information can be ob-

AltaLink is hoping to be a new
neighbour to residents in Lang-
don. They are proposing a new
utility training centre three km
southwest of the town site and
presented plans to the public on
Oct. 2 in Langdon.
There are no facilities like
this in Alberta. The proposal
is to build adjacent to the west
Langdon substation, keeping
the tower structures in the same
area, which will lessen the visual
impact of the towers. It is not a
working plant. No electricity will
fow through the towers. The in-
tent is to be a practise and train-
ing facility for linemen.
Storms sometimes roll through
the province and we need to do a
quick restoration, the crews will
have the experience to do that.
They will have the experience
of pulling out old structures and
building new ones, said Scott
Schreiner, Director of External
Engagement for AltaLink. The
workmen are currently required
to train on live lines, which are
very dangerous, or we need
to take a line out of service for
them to train. We want to elimi-
nate that. We want to ensure that
we can get everybody trained
safely and that they have the op-
portunity to train. We want to do
it in an environment that is more
controlled and has less impact on
people using power in Alberta.
AltaLink has 30 to 40 feld
crews that monitor 12,000 km of
line in the province. These crews
would utilize the site. Teachers
are accredited live line instruc-
tors. This facility is not an ac-
credited training centre or school
in the conventional sense. Line-
men courses are offered at Leth-
bridge Community College and
NAIT. New graduates of those
programs may take advantage of
apprentice and journeyman op-
portunities offered by any utility
employers. AltaLink expects to
open up the facility to other util-
ity companies, to take advantage
of the new facility for their em-
ployees.
Area residents may get some
interesting spectator material, as
some of the exercises include

gets tough, he puts his shoulder to the grindstone and work
helps him get through.
His employees felt Lyalls contributions as a boss and com-
munity member deserved recognition and nominated him
for the Hometown Hero title. CJAY92 appoints the title once
a month from submissions, and listeners vote on the ap-
pointments.
I was pretty overwhelmed, said Lyall. Gerry Forbes
called from the morning show and told me I could throw a
party for anyone I want.
At frst, Lyalls wife Alex thought it might be someone play-
ing a practical joke. However, it was legitimate, and typical
to his selfess attitude, Lyall chose to throw the party for the
local Lions members.
I appreciate all the support this club has given me as a
member and the camaraderie. I want to give this back to the
community and to people who deserve it, said Lyall to his
fellow Lions.
CJAY92 provided individual meals, drinks and free movie
passes and draws.

A resolution was presented to council October 3, 2012 increasing the
Franchise Fee for electricity (Fortis). The total cost to the Town
for electricity in 2010 was $695,000 and was $789,000 in 2011
an increase of 13.5%. A similar increase in the cost of electricity is
expected for 2012 and 2013 . The increase in the Franchise fee will

High school. Junior high school. They
can be terrifying words for some people.
Every day can be a challenge to make
it through. Its the age where a lot of
changes are happening and where a
young person is starting to grow and
fgure out whom they are. Its also a
time when peer pressure and bullying
can be at their worst.
Dwayne Peace, a former Calgary Po-
lice Service member and school police
liaison is the life skills facilitator for the
Dare to Care program. On Oct. 4 he was
at Holy Cross Collegiate to speak with
the Grade 8 to 12 students about differ-
ent challenges they may be facing. Some
of the challenges discussed included
body image, eating disorders, bullying,
suicide, bullycide, texting, sexting, cut-
ting, burning, and self-harm.
Most kids, I would say 80-90 per cent
say that its life-changing and thats not
something that I take lightly so I chal-
lenge them on that and it just changes
the perspective on the way that they
look at other people, the way they treat
others and the way they allow others to
treat them, said Peace.
For suicide you want to know how
powerful it is, in 2009-2010 I had 49
students come up to me in regards to
suicide that nobody had any idea about.
Last year I had 23. So far this year Ive
had fve.
When kids feel comfortable coming
up to a stranger and saying you reached
me and Im having thoughts of suicide
then we can get them the help that they
need. I have saved more lives in any one
given year with Dare to Care then I did
in 25 with the Calgary Police Service.
The two-part workshop began with an
assembly, which allowed the students
to get to know Peace and begin feeling
comfortable with him. The second part
of the workshop included group ses-
sions. Each topic he discusses is brought
to the students in a different light. For
example, when talking about eating dis-
orders he would teach the kids that food
is a fuel.
The Dare to Care program is available
to any school in any community. Peace
said he has even been invited to Bermu-
da a few times over the years to speak
to students there. The program is avail-
able for students K-12. Bully proofng
is taught by Lisa Dixon-Wells and Kim
Edwards for students K-7.

Oktoberfest
Since 1950, the festival has only started after the offcial
gun salute and the mayor shouting O zapft is!
(Its tapped!) and offering the frst mug to the
Minister-President of the State of Bavaria.
Only after that, the festival can start.
Oktoberfest beer has from 0.6 to 1.1% more alcohol
and sugar than the average german beer, making it
even easier for people to forget all their worries,
their hats, their names.

In 1900, in the U.S., nearly one-third of all
new babies never reached the age of fve. The
major diseases that took these children were
whooping cough, diphtheria, scarlet fever and
rheumatic fever. As well, women often died of
childbirth fever, a serious streptococcal infec-
tion of the vagina.
One of the unsung heroes of medication his-
tory is hydrocortisone. It was discovered sixty
years ago and has been a wonderful solution to
people suffering from itchy and infamed skin
conditions. The drug is found in creams and
ointments and is available without a prescrip-

proper use of this product.
Singing in a choir is good for your health.
Scientifc studies have proven that singers have
longer lives, use fewer prescriptions, have better
cognitive skills, better vision, volunteer more of-

thing: 93% of choir singers vote in elections!
Asthma-sufferers note: about one-third of
asthma patients do not use their inhalers correct-

Oktoberfest is, above all, a celebration of Bavarian traditions, so the only beer youll fnd during the festival is
brewed within the city limits of Munich. Only beers that ft this criteria are considered Oktoberfest Beers.
The frst Oktoberfest was held to honour the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen,
in 1810. Now thats what we call a wedding party.

County road crews were asked to respond to recent bale
fres in the county, and Public Works Manager Gerry Van
Oostwaard questioned whether the potential dangers for
crews and equipment in these situations needed to be re-
viewed.
It is extremely dangerous for the men and the equip-
ment, said Van Oostwaard. When the crews have asked us
to help out, we have done that. I am not advocating that we
refuse it, but it is very dangerous for the men and dangerous
for the equipment.
He was concerned that the men had no training in the
situation, and also wheather the county had any coverage
under these circumstances.
In discussion, County councillors recommended that pro-
tocols for response in those situations be in place. The crews
are covered under the Workers Compensation Board, if any
injury should occur. It was indicated the protocols should
state the managers authorization to deny the request if he
felt there was a safety issue. Councillors suggested that the
County Fire and Safety Manager could arrange training for
the crewmembers. Staff was asked to forward the issue to
the legal and insurance advisors for their input on the situ-
ation and report to council.
Dry conditions prompted fre wardens to issue a ban on
Sept. 21. The ban was lifted as of Oct. 4. Gas or propane
BBQs were not included in the ban. The fre wardens post
signs in their designated areas and the notice is on the
Wheatland County website. www.wheatlandcounty.ca.

The students and therapists at Project Hope are back to
the grind after a beautiful summer break. Last year we had
84 students participating in some or all of the therapies,
which include music, art, and phys ed. therapy.
Each student will gain different benefts from working
with the therapists, but in general some of the skills they de-
velop include: improved communication skills, social skills,
and interpersonal relationships.
This year our anticipated operating budget will be ap-
proximately $130,000. All of this money is raised through
generous donations from community members as well as
from service groups such as the local Lions clubs and in the
past WFCSS. The volunteer board also works a casino every
two years, which is as frequent as Project Hope is eligible,
and every March we hold our annual Gala fundraiser.
This last operating year we received a generous donation
from W. Brett Wilson of Prairie Merchant Corp as well as
from the Ten Day Tarmac Babies. A big thank you to both
of those organizations as without help from people like you
Project Hope would cease to operate as the valuable pro-
gram it is.
Also this year the ladies at Eventful Elements are putting
on a Bridal Fair on Nov. 3 with a performance by local ce-
lebrity Drew Gregory. All of the proceeds from the dinner
gala are being donated to Project Hope. For tickets to this
event please contact Junella at 403-901-7196 or check out
the website www.strathmorebridalexpo2012.com. Tickets
include dinner and the concert and will also be available
through the Strathmore Travelodge.
Project Hope is a program that is unique to our com-
munity, and one we can be very proud of. The therapies
are offered in six schools, including Wheatland, Brentwood,
CMJHS, SHS, Central Bow Valley and Westmount.
The therapies these students receive are invaluable and
we are so proud to be able to offer them. We are always
searching for community members to join our board, as
well as donations either in the form of money or items for
our annual auction. If you feel you can help please contact
Corinne at 403-807-2965.
For more information please join us at our Annual Gen-
eral Meeting on Monday Nov. 12 at 4:45 p.m. at Westmount

Strathmore RCMP has charged a local
woman with theft over $5000, forgery and
fraud, after over $100,000 went missing
from the Strathmore Rural Fire Association
funds. The woman had been the secretary/
treasurer for 15 years. The theft of the funds
occurred from 2007-2012. The RCMP con-
ducted a six-month investigation into the
missing funds.
This money is gone, said Lou Delgado,
Interim President for the Association.
The theft has signifcantly affected the op-
erational viability of the Strathmore Rural
Fire Association. Delgado does not expect
recovery of any of the funds. The hall faces
loss of their equipment because they have
a $7,200 monthly payment on their equip-
ment and have no funds to make payment.
The frst appearance of the woman is on
Nov. 20, 2012 in Provincial Court. She will
plead guilty or not guilty and then trial pro-
ceedings will commence. If found guilty,
judge can decide on a sentence ranging be-
tween 6 months with a fne, up to 10 years
imprisonment.
RCMP investigators suspect should she be
found guilty, the charges will be signifcant.

1. Place the shrimp in food processor, and process until the shrimp are finely ground. Set
aside in lg bowl. Working in batches, process the ground beef to a fine grind, and set aside
with the shrimp. Combine shrimp and ground beef with ginger, shallot, green onions, napa
cabbage, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt and pepper, and white sugar, and mix the ingredients
until thoroughly combined.
2. To fill pot stickers, place wrapper on work surface in front of you; place a scant teaspoon
of filling in center. With a wet finger, dampen the edges of the wrapper. Fold the dough into
a half-moon shape, enclosing the filling, and press and seal to remove extra air and tightly
seal the edges together. (Fold small pleats for a traditional look). Refrigerate the filled wrap-
pers on parchment-lined baking sheet while you finish filling and sealing the pot stickers.
3. Heat the oil in a lg nonstick skillet with a lid over med. heat. Place pot stickers into hot oil,
flat sides down, without crowding, and let fry until the bottoms are golden brown, 1 to 2 mins.
Turn the dumplings over, and pour the water over them. Cover the pan with a lid and let the
dumplings steam until the water has nearly evaporated and the dumplings have begun to fry
in oil again, 5 to 7 mins. Uncover the skillet, and let the pot stickers cook until all the water is
evaporated and the wrapper has shrunk down tightly onto the filling, another 2 to 3 mins.
1 lb. raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
4 lbs. ground beef
1 tbsp minced fresh ginger root
1 shallot, minced
1 bunch green onions, chopped
3 leaves napa cabbage, chopped
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp Asian (toasted) sesame oil
salt and white pepper to taste
1 pinch white sugar
1 (10oz.) pkg round gyoza/potsticker wrappers

Miss Strathmore Stampede 2012
August 1 marked the start of a new adventure
when I was crowned Miss Strathmore Stampede
2012 at the Strathmore Stampede Appreciation
Banquet. I am honoured for the opportunity to
represent the Strathmore Stampede along with
being an ambassador for the Town of Strathmore
and surrounding area for the next year.
August was certainly a busy month starting with
a visit to the Strathmore Hospital for their seniors
pancake breakfast and the annual Strathmore
Stampede and Heritage Days. It was fantastic to
work alongside the Rodeo Committee, volunteers,
and sponsors that make this grand event happen.
When the Stampede came to an end, it was time
to begin my journey travelling across Alberta to
rodeos and parades.
First invitation was to ride in the Water Valley
Days Parade and assist with the childrens games
afterwards. The Strathmore Super Series Youth
Rodeo committee asked me out to ride in their
grand entry and assist with handing out the prizes
for mutton busting the day went very well, and
the competitors did a fantastic job! I look forward
to helping out again next year.
After the youth rodeo, I travelled up the highway
to Stettler for the Steel Wheel Stampede where I
was honored to carry the Canadian Flag. Pincher
Creek Pro Rodeo was the next day where I had
the privilege in assisting with the crowning of the
new Miss Rodeo Pincher Creek. Just a couple
days later, I was in Lethbridge to participate rid-
ing in the Whoop-Up Days parade along with Miss
Rodeo Canada and other rodeo royalty. It was a
beautiful day, and the crowd made it all the better.
September started off with the Okotoks Pro Ro-
deo which included a visiting rodeo royalty day of
activities, introductions at the rodeo and being on
hand to see the crowning of the new Miss Rodeo
Okotoks. On Labour Day, I attended the Cochrane
Lions Rodeo Visiting Royalty Day riding in their
parade, introductions during the rodeo, assisting
with mutton bustin, as well as there for the crown-
ing of the new Cochrane Lions Rodeo Queen and
Princess. Its a great thing to see so many of the
rodeos promoting the Rodeo Royalty, and for all
the volunteers to make these great performances
possible.
Recently, I have been to the Hanna Pro Rodeo
where I met the new Miss Pro Rodeo Hanna, and
participated in their All Horse Parade and other
events throughout the day. The other visiting roy-
alty and I had a great time at the threshing dem-
onstration where a few of us took part to see what
it was like using a 1928 threshing machine. The
rodeo that night went fantastic, and it was great
to have the privilege to ride the Calgary Stampede
horses that were loaned to some of us royalty to
use for the day. This past weekend I attended the
FCA Finals in Red Deer for two great performanc-
es. I was happy to assist in selling 50/50 tickets
and presenting cheques to the competitors along
with the royalty from Cochrane and Okotoks.
Having the privilege to be Miss Strathmore Stam-
pede is an honour, and gives me the opportunity
to meet many wonderful people from all over. The
Strathmore Stampede hasnt had Stampede Roy-
alty for about eight years, and to be able to help
bring it back is fantastic. I am currently working
on developing the program, soliciting sponsor-
ship, and getting a committee together. Those in-
terested in running for Miss Strathmore Stampede
2013, and you are between the ages of 18 to 24,
applications will be available at the beginning of
June 2013. If anyone has any questions about the
program, or would like me to attend your event,
please e-mail me at missstrathmorestampede@
gmail.com and I will be in touch with you. Happy
Trails until next month.

Losing a pet can be heart breaking, especially
when they have run away and you cant fnd them.
Thats why Brandi Romeo is now offering a $2,000
reward for the safe return of her dog Foxy. Foxys
picture has been plastered around town and on
Facebook, and despite numerous sightings no one
has been able to catch her yet.
She went missing on a walk (on) the 24th. I
was on holidays and my girlfriends were looking
after her and they were on a walk. She spooked
and wiggled out of her harness and took off, and
weve been searching for her ever since, said Ro-
meo.
At the time Foxy, who is a fve-year-old micro-
chipped Chihuahua, and her walkers were by the
Music Centre building on Third Ave.
She has been seen heading across Hwy 1 by the
Station Romeo and her friends canvassed the area
knocking on everyones door to no avail
Another person told her Foxy was across from
the golf course by the canal. Yet another had seen
her heading northeast through Kinsmen Park.
Most recently, over the weekend Foxy was spot-
ted behind Wal-Mart, but again she was too quick
for anyone to grab.
Shes fairly timid youd have to be very cautious
I think going up to her. If shes still out there she
is probably very, very scared, said Romeo.
I want her backshes my child.
The Animal Care Centre said are many pets
missing and one of the best ways to see them re-
turn home safely is to have them tattooed and/or
micro-chipped.
Anyone with information about Foxy can call
403-901-5957 or 403-901-8810. Foxy can also be
dropped off at Quality Canine Center 207, 5 Bay-
side Place, no questions asked.

Fule for Thought
Many guys my age have always felt worried about
hair loss. Ours and (previous generations) REALLY
wanted to keep our hair as long as possible. We
were always worried what would happen if the hair
went and in the 70s, long hair was a BIG thing!!
I remember watching a NFL game and the receiver
was a guy named Fred Biletnikoff. He had long,
fowing hair hanging out the bottom of his helmet
he looked SO cool! Imagine my shock when he
took off the helmet and he was virtually BALD with
hair only hanging down from above his ears! I al-
ways wondered why bother with the long hair
whats the use?
This fear of hair loss would explain the many
infomercials dealing with this with their pills, lo-
tions, weaves, toupees, heck even spray- on- stuff to
cling to the hairs youve got! If you remember an
earlier column, some men will even latch on to any
idea, like cracked eggs rubbed into the scalp! I had
a friend in high school who was terrifed hed lose
his hair. Hed been told by someone that washing
your hair too often, caused it to fall out faster. So,
this poor guy would let his hair go for days without
washing it it became a straggled, greasy mess.
Hed have been better off with no hair than what it
looked like in high school!
Men have often dealt with hair loss differently.
Some (like Rene Levesque and Donald Trump) have
mastered the plastered comb-over, so it looks like
you still have hair, only parted on the side. With
Levesque though, HIS part started around his collar
and was greased straight over his head! He mustve
been terrifed of any wind gusts! I have seen photos
of Donald Trump boarding one of his planes in a
windstorm. The poor guy looks like he has a fag
of orange-gray hair attached to the side of his head!
Thats why I admire this new generation of men.
If they notice some thinning, they shave it right
down to the bare skin! Theyre not afraid to deal
with it, and why not? Its become fashionable for
guys to shave their heads, and some action stars
like Bruce Willis look fne. In fact, theres a new
article out that shows men with thinning hair who
shave it, are perceived to be more manly and bet-
ter leaders! Where were these articles when I was
in 11th grade!
However, when youre a child of the 60s and 70s,
its hard to shake the idea that having hair is essen-
tial. Luckily, my hair has hung around a lot longer
than I thought. However, I still cringe when its re-
ally windy, or when it starts to rain. You can look
okay with thinner hair, until the rains hit! Ive even
tried dodging the rain drops, if I dont have a hat or
umbrella! Once the hair DOES get wet, theres no
more hiding, or dodging the issue, as theres more
head showing than hair!
The frst time I shaved my head was in 1999 for
a big school fund-raiser for Cancer. I had agreed
that at $7,000, my hair would go. However, I didnt
get the rules I thought they had to raise $7,000
just for me. I didnt realize it was a running total
for the whole staff, and when each teachers goal
was reached, out would come the clippers! It was
then I discovered that luckily, I have a very round
head, just RIGHT for shaving. In fact, my bald pate
resembles Casper the Friendly Ghost!
The latest head shaving happened this past Fri-
day. Strathmore High had fnally held our frst Terry
Fox Run. I told the students that if we hit $3,500
in money raised, the person who raised the most
could shave my head at lunch time. The little brats
raised $6,300! So, off came the hair, and sadly
the eyebrows, too! That part was never told to me,
so you can imagine my shock!
It took a matter of minutes before I was called
many things. Some said I looked like Dr. Evil from
the Austin Powers movies others said Mr. Clean,
and MY personal favourite was Stone Cold Steve
Austin!
What REALLY hurt though, was an e-mail fred
to all staff before the end of the day. It described a
new teacher on staff, and a photo of Uncle Fester
from The Addams Family!
Wow that one hurt. Ive also discovered the
purpose of eyebrows. Any kind of exercise that
causes sweating, is no longer kept out of my eyes
and THAT stings. At least thats what I tell every-
one, cuz being called Uncle Fester HAS made me
tear up a little!

Pat Fule posed a challenge
to the students of Strathmore
High School. One they ac-
cepted and easily surpassed.
The challenge was that Fule
would shave his head if the
students could raise at least
$3,500 for the frst annual
Terry Fox run. The students
almost doubled it, raising
$6,300. The kids were awe-
some, they went way above
our expectations, said Fule.
mitchel Nelder raised the
most at $460 and was given
the honour of shaving Fule.

Letters to the editor
To the Editor
(Letter from Curt Emde, Chief of the Carseland Fire
Department to the Deputy Reeve as presented to
Wheatland Council on Oct. 2.)
Since I have taken over one year ago, Ive come to
some realizations: The Carseland Fire Department was
neglected and needed lots of upgrades due to the in-
crease of membership, community growth and indus-
trial growth.
To this end, we the Carseland Fire Department have
been working hard to achieve these goals.
Areas that are of highest priority are training, equip-
ment, building, community involvement and enrolment
of new members. To accomplish this I have done some
fnancial analysis, sought out advice from multiple
sources, such as fre chiefs, local businessmen, fre in-
spectors, county representatives, and other professional
sources.
The steps we have taken to achieve this are advertis-
ing, meetings with the community, fund raising events
and forming a freboard with local residents. We are
working on capital improvement projects and projects
to gain community recognition and respect.
Our future goals are to have a highly respected, fully
equipped and highly trained fre department to take
care of our growing community. We want to build a
new fre hall that the community can be proud of and
consider a landmark.
This hall will be built with the future in mind. Some
of the things that we see a need for our area are Hazmat
response, ambulance service, water rescue, cliff rescue.
We are also realizing that we need to work alongside
and support the expanding industrial base in our area.
I quickly realized as Chief, that in order to gain com-
munity support both physical and fnancial, we needed
to have our own identity In order to keep this posi-
tive momentum in our community, I need to know that
County council is supporting my volunteer fre depart-
ment endeavors.
What do you say??

In June, MP Kevin Sorenson chose to make signif-
cant cuts to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency by
voting in favour of the Conservative omnibus budget
bill. Liberals voted against these cuts because Canadi-
ans deserve to feel confdent that their food supply is
protected just as our farmers and ranchers deserve safe
and stable business.
Unfortunately these cuts went ahead and undetected
E. coli contamination at the XL Foods facility in Brooks,
Alberta, led to the largest meat recall in Canadian his-
tory, spanning all the provinces and territories, plus 41
states. Alarmingly, the outbreak was frst detected by US
food inspectors, not CFIA, and it took over two weeks
for the frst recall to be issued. At least 10 people have
fallen ill. Conservative messaging that everything is fne
is cold comfort to those who are sick or were exposed
to E coli.
Canadians expected the government to heed the les-
sons of the 2008 listeriosis crisis, which left 22 dead and
35 others gravely ill. Yet the comprehensive audit of our
food safety system recommended by an independent
review has yet to occur four years later.
Not only a terrible human tragedy, this may turn out
to be the worst crisis in our beef industry since the dis-
covery of BSE, or mad cow disease in 2003, which led
to an immediate worldwide ban on all Canadian beef
exports. Our cattlemen and food processors are at risk
of another fnancial body blow, yet the Conservatives
have just cut farm risk management programs, Agri Sta-
bility and Agri Invest.
Why is Mr. Sorenson cutting support for farmers in
crisis? Why is he supporting cuts that remove vital re-
sources from food safety professionals and creating a
space where the industry is responsible for more and
more of its self-regulation?
Waiting for Canadians to get sick is not a food safety
strategy. Liberals support our scientists and profession-
als who are on the front line of food safety and call on
Mr. Sorenson to do the same.

Liberal Party Critic for Agriculture and Agri-Food

The Strathmore Alliance Church will be celebrat-
ing its 50th anniversary on Oct. 20. There will be a
come-and-go luncheon for anyone interested and
plenty of memorabilia to reminisce over.
We have pictures dating back untilthe origi-
nal school house we started in, we have pictures
of that. Its kind of cool the memorabilia that we
have around here, said Donna Fitzgerald, chil-
drens director for the church.
On Sunday, Oct. 21, there will be coffee time
beginning at 10 a.m. with church tours available,
and at 11 a.m. there will be a special service held
with previous pastors attending.
Its about honouring God in what he has done
on Strathmore and how he has blessed us. We
have a plaque on the outside our building that
says To God be the Glory and that was put there
in 1962 and so its just incredible that he has
blessed us and allowed us to be here for 50 years,
said Fitzgerald about the special service.
She said it will be like a family reunion with
the pastors and former members returning. There
will be kids activities and they will be part of the
service, singing a couple of songs with the choir.
Pastor Darrell Young agrees that in his past 15
years he has seen the church and the members in
it grow to become a big family.
Theres been a growth in terms of us becom-
ing a congregation, kind of like a big family. So if
theres a young person here he has a whole bunch
of grandparents, if theres an older person here
theyve got a whole bunch of grandkids and un-
cles and aunts and brothers and sister. Just a real
family sense of community, said Young.
Our hope for the future of the church is that
our young people become fully engaged and that
our younger families and younger people lead us
into the future and engage fully in the commu-
nity.
The open house begins at 2 p.m. on Oct. 20 and
will end at 5 p.m. The entire community is encour-
aged to stop by, whether its for the open house
on the Saturday, or the Sunday service.

Kiwanis has been a big part of Cory
Johnsons life for over 20 years, and re-
cently he became even more immersed
in it. During a road trip this past sum-
mer, Johnsons wife Sandi mentioned
she would love to live at Kamp Kiwan-
is, located north of Bragg Creek. After
talking it over as a family, and realizing
everyone was on board the Johnson
family decided if the directorship ever
came up he would apply for it.
That was on July 23. The family ar-
rived home on Aug. 2. Johnson called
the camp and found out the position,
by coincidence, was available.
I got hired on Aug. 18 and we had
13 days to pack up our whole house
and move everything to Kamp Kiwan-
is. Were still unpacking. Its all been
within in a month and half from talking
about it to being here and having staff,
said Johnson.
On Sept. 1, the family of four, soon to
be fve, moved into the directors home
at the camp.
Its been a really big change going
from living in Strathmore and Sandi
working at the hospital and having ev-
erything four minutes away to being
out here and being in nature and it be-
ing so calm. No commercialized stuff,
no Wal-Mart nearby, said Johnson.
It has been good for the whole fam-
ily, and everything is centered around
the outdoor community that we have
here. We barely watch TV, go on the In-
ternet or any of that because we have
everything here.
Johnson began with Kamp Kiwanis
in 1992 as a volunteer. He worked his
way up through the ranks at the Kamp.
After camp he joined the Kiwanis club
of Calgary. When he became governor
it made Johnson realize that his talents
lie in serving and giving back to others.
Being the director (has) given me the
ability to give back and serve children
and the staff to give them the experi-
ence that they deserve, said Johnson.
Ive been working more or less 12 to
14 hour days trying to get the program
up and running and just preparing staff
and getting ready for the spring.
The main focus of Kamp Kiwanis is
being a summer camp for underprivi-
leged children. The Kamp fundraises
they have they have outdoor school
and different programs to raise money
to pay for summer camp. Approximate-
ly 70 to 80 kids are sent to camp each
session and there are fve sessions.

Professional speaker Patricia morgan was
in Strathmore on Oct. 2 to present her Woe
to Wow seminar. The seminar was to teach
about resilience and bouncing back from
change, loss, and adversity. Resilience is
like a rubber band, so you want to be fex-
ible, you want some challenge and stretch in
your life but you dont want to stretch too far
or you snap, crack or break, said morgan.
its the capacity or the ability to face chal-
lenges, or to get back on track and deal with
them. So were all resilient.
The half-day workshop included instructional
sessions on marketing yourself for success,
nine essential skills all employers are looking
for and resumes and cover letters.

Bing Crosbys 1943 hit Ill be Home for Christ-
mas has taken on a special meaning for a Strath-
more woman as she anticipates her husband
fnishing his last tour of duty with the Alaska Na-
tional Guard in Afghanistan in time to be back
with her and their two children for December 25.
For Nick Phillips, being away from home and his
wife Amanda (nee Nicolson) was diffcult enough
for both of them. Phillips is on his third tour away
from home, his previous two being in Iraq. Part
of a peace keeping unit with a Provincial Recon-
struction Team, Phillips platoon helps the local
Afghan National Police rebuild their infrastructure
and provide security for the engineers and doctors
stationed there. There is an element of danger as
Phillips still leaves the confnes of the compound
two to three times a day on patrol in the unpre-
dictable country.
When Amanda, a registered nurse at the Peter
Lougheed Hospital in the neo-natal intensive care
unit, found out she was expecting their second
child she kept the news quiet from Nick until she
had a positive confrmation from the doctor be-
cause she said that she didnt want to cause him
(Nick) any added or undue stress while he was
stationed overseas.
The couple already has a beautiful little daugh-
ter, Karmyn, almost two-years-old. When Phillips
received the news from his wife he jokingly said,
I annoyed the platoon for the next week or so
telling everyone that we were having baby num-
ber two.
Phillips received a call from his wife early in
September saying that the doctor would be induc-
ing her early due to some health concerns. With
a twelve hour time difference, Phillips was on a
night shift in Afghanistan when his sister-in-law
Skyped him from the Drumheller Hospital so he
was able to experience the birth of his son on
an iPhone, with his mother-in-law (Kathy Nichol-
son) flling in as coach. Marc Anthony Phillips was
born at 37 weeks on September 6 at 9:10 a.m.,
weighing a whopping 6lbs 13 oz and measuring a
strapping 21 inches in length.
Phillips was recently able to take a short leave
to come home for 10 days to meet his son and
spend some time with his family. His father few
down from Alaska to see him and to meet his new
grandson. Not a stranger to the military, Phillips
father was part of the U.S. Armys Special Forces
Unit before retiring to working in the Anchorage
College, and remains actively involved in the vet-
eran community.
Phillips left for Afghanistan on Saturday morn-
ing, Oct. 6. Amanda said, I dont know why but it
just seems more diffcult saying goodbye this time
even though I know that it will be a shorter time
before I see him again.
Phillips will be back to the U.S. in November to
Indiana for training before having a 10-day leave
over Christmas and New Years with his family
in Strathmore. Technically he will be fnished his
nine-year commitment in July 2013 when he looks
forward to enjoying civilian life. Both Nick and
Amanda are incredibly thankful for a supportive
family and for the modern technology that allows
them to regularly see each other on Skype.
In the meantime, Amanda sings to baby Marc
and sister Karmyn, Ill be Home for Christmas,
in hopes that the time fies by.

members of the Lord of All Lutheran Church have been har-

Womens Shelter in Strathmore. On Sept. 29 they held their
Big Dig.

Blessings come in all shapes and sizes. The Big
Dig happened on Saturday, Sept. 29 as members
from Lord of All Lutheran Church in Strathmore
harvested the community garden planted in the
spring of this year.
Mike Ewashen (Missions Director) at Lord of
All said the community garden project was well
received by the members of the congregation in
doing something local for Missions. Often when
talking about Missions in a church one thinks of
making quilts, baby layettes and school kits for
kids overseas in Africa. Lord of All recognized
that we have a need right in our own backyards,
sometimes we just need to open our eyes to see
it.
Early in the spring members went to a farm
(just outside of Strathmore) belonging to a mem-
ber of the congregation to plant a community
garden. They planted many of the heartier veg-
etables like potatoes, carrots, beets, cabbage,
beans, zucchini, lettuce and kale, just to name
a few. Throughout the summer people went out
volunteering their time on a regular basis to
weed, and to harvest things that were ready. The
produce harvested throughout the summer was
donated to the local Womens Shelter in Strath-
more.
Pastor Dawn Nelson, along with about a doz-
en members and kids, fnished the harvesting of
the garden on Saturday in their Big Dig where
they collected their produce and delivered it to
the Strathmore Food Bank. Pastor Dawn says, I
am proud of the show of support that my mem-
bers give to the various missions projects and it
shows the kids that there are needs in their com-
munity as well.
To celebrate the harvest time and a time of
Thanksgiving Lord of All Lutheran Church will
be having their annual Harvest Supper on Satur-
day, Oct. 27 at 5:30 p.m. at the Strathmore Civic
Centre. Tickets for the event are still available for
$20 with Claudia at the Remax offce in Strath-
more.

Transportation and Infrastructure
Manager Dave Churchill brought a pub-
lic safety and liability concern to coun-
cil. It was regarding farmers accessing
road right-of-ways with their equipment
to feed livestock. He suggested that
the farmers be given guidelines. These
guidelines would be operating only in
daylight hours, fasher displays, posting
road signage and eliminate U-turns on
the right of way.
These measures are to make the
road safe for the public, said Churchill.
Councillors indicated there were
three similar situations. There are oth-
er agreements set up for areas around
Texas gates and the owner accepts li-
abilities that occur when they accept
the contract with the county. It is also
required that they keep the areas free
of debris.
When they agree to the contract they
are expected to keep within the param-
eters of the agreement, said Councillor
Ben Armstrong.
Council directed staff to research the
responsibility for the liability and insur-
ance issues in these situations and re-
port back to council for a decision.
Enforcing sign infractions
The enforcement of signage encroach-
ing on the 300m limit of highways was
discussed with Fred Lee, Operations
Manager and Trevor Richelhof, Devel-
oping and Planning Technician from Al-
berta Transportation.
County staff did a survey to determine
whether residents displaying signs had
a permit for them. They found that the
majority of people did not have permits.
Councillors stated there were variations
in signage allowances between other
counties and there did not seem to be
conformity in the signs.
There are policy guidelines put forth
by Alberta Transportation; however,
they send letters for voluntary compli-
ance, said Richelhof.
The policy includes parameters for
businesses, rural addresses and tour-
ist attraction signs, issues that County
councillors also mentioned.
We havent got a policy yet for en-
forcement, but it is in the works. We
usually just request the landowners co-
operation, said Richelhof .
They said the department usually de-
fers to the discretion of the county in-
volved as far as enforcement measures
are concerned.
If it isnt in the bylaw, you cant en-
force it, but nothing says you have to
enforce it, said Richelhof about the
countys ability to enforce sign infrac-
tions.
Councillors asked if Alberta Trans-
portation representatives could clarify
some issues with staff and then staff
could forward information for council
to consider, in considering enforcement
issues.

Staff reported to council on the de-
lays of water tests results submitted on
Aug. 4 and taken by a designated con-
sultant for Encana, from the Severn Dam
holding facility. The tests results were
received back Aug. 16, but erroneously
lumped in with the regular testing re-
sults done on regular county utility wa-
ter. Staff was not aware the tests had not
been done separately and were expect-
ing the Encana results to be received
separately. Encana gave permission to
county staff to make the results public.
The results showed the samples were
acceptable within Canadian Drinking
Water Guidelines (www.bclaws.ca/EPLi-
braries/bclaws_new ) for copper, lead
and aluminum levels. The Wise fam-
ily also provided water taken from un-
loaded contents of a private contractors
truck spraying on public roads. Further
testing is ongoing, for safe parameters
according to Directive 55, section 11 for
substances like PH, sodium, calcium and
dissolved hydrocarbons. A complete list
of testable substances is listed at www.
health.gov.sk.ca/water-guidelines-wa-
ter-quality.
Staff said they discussed the road
spray incident with Encana and the
company promised they would speak
to the drivers. The company has regular
business agreements with individuals to
spray the water as irrigation on farm-
land or mix with drilling mud.
The frst set of water sample results
were given to the Wise family. The Wise
family reported that the trucks were still
off-loading the water on the roads and
ditches. They were still not satisfed that
measures were in place to assure the
health and safety of the water sprayed,
or to deter illegal dumping.
Councillors asked staff to request an
Encana representative come and speak
to council to address some questions.
library funDs
Council awarded money to its rural
libraries on Oct. 2. Carseland and Glei-
chen will receive an $8,000 base fund-
ing. Rosebud would receive $2,000
and all county libraries would receive
a $15 per cardholder rate. As of Dec.
31, 2012, libraries that currently receive
assistance with utility payments would
be solely responsible for paying their
utilities.
post officE
Ratepayers had mentioned to council-
lors concerns over the driving habits of
a rural post offce delivery driver. Ap-
parently, the drivers actions loading and
unloading at some of the rural post of-
fces was causing property damage and
safety concerns. Councillors asked staff
to draft a letter to send to Canada Post
regarding the concerns.
Councillor objectivity called into question
Shannon LecLair
Times Reporter
Concerns about council members
having a fair and unbiased opinion re-
garding the downtown beautifcation
proposals were brought into question
by Councillor Bob Sobol at the Oct. 3
council meeting.
At the April 28 spring workshop a
request was approved for Councillors
Blokland and Sobol to be able to dis-
cuss downtown beautifcation ideas.
Sobol said there have been both pros
and cons brought forward by both
community members and downtown
businesses as different ideas have been
tossed about.
Councillor Rempel had previously
publicly stated he was not in favour
of the proposal being brought forth.
Councillor Earl Best also previously
made it clear the beautifcation ideas
being proposed are not being done un-
der the direction of council.
Sobol questions the councillors abil-
ity to cast an unbiased vote on the
matter as they have already made their
opinions clear.
At the council meeting Rempel said
he is not in favour of it being a project
taken on by council and asked for the
matter to be held off until Oct. 17.
I never did support the idea of
them going out there and promoting
this boulevard and beautifcation of
the downtown. First of all its not even
a council item or thing that council
would get involved with, its something
that the Chamber of Commerce would
get involved with, said Rempel.
I would have fully supported rec-
ommending it to the Chamber of Com-
merce to go ahead and research the
possibility of doing a downtown beau-
tifcation, but it is not a function of
council to go out there and promote
this and defnitely not with taxpayer
dollars.
Sobol had asked for an apology
about the comments made that he said
were disrespectful and presumptuous.
Rempel didnt apologize and the mat-
ter was dropped until the Oct. 17 coun-
cil meeting when all of council and the
mayor will be in attendance. Councillor
Best and Mayor Steve Grajczyk were
not in attendance of the meeting.
franchisE fEEs
The towns electricity charges have
been increasing steadily which made
council direct administration to look
into the franchise fee agreement with
Fortis Alberta.
The previous franchise fee agree-
ment was at fve per cent, which re-
lates to about $2.30 for the average
residence. In an effort to recoup some
of the money the town is spending on
electricity council brought forward a
proposal to see the franchise fee in-
creased to 10 per cent which will
cost the average residence $4.60 per
month. Even with the increase Coun-
cillor Rempel said it just brings the
town a little closer to the breaking
even point, though they are still not
there. Deputy Mayor Pat Fule wanted
to see more information about what
the shortfalls were. Those numbers
werent available and the deadline to
apply for the revised rate was Oct. 4.
Fule voted against the motion to in-
crease the rates.

The Wheatland Regional Water Part-
nership (WRWP), which includes the
Villages of Rockyford, Hussar and
Standard and Wheatland County, sub-
mitted a request for support from the
town. The WRWP would like to tie in
to the East Regional Calgary Waterline
and receive potable water from Cal-
gary via Strathmores waterline. The
WRWP made the request to Strathmore
so they may continue the process with
grant applications for design and con-
struction.
The town has drafted a letter to be
sent in response to the request. Coun-
cil supported the motion with condi-
tions in principle, at a later date actual
conditions will added.
lEavE of absEncE
Last month Councillor Earl Best had
requested a four month leave of ab-
sence. Things have since changed for
him and at the Oct. 3 meeting he re-
quested a return to council after only
one months leave. Council approved
the request.

p e o p l e ,
Oktober-
fest sym-
b o l i z e s
beer and
not much
else. But
those who
want to
enjoy Okto-
berfest to the
fullest should not
only hoist a favor-
ite beer, but participate
in the following traditions as
well.
* Dress the part. Perhaps the only
thing associated with Oktoberfest as
much as beer is the extraordinary out-
fts worn by Oktoberfest performers
and staff. Men traditionally wear le-
derhosen, which consists of a pair of
shorts or three-quarter length pants, as
well as a drop-front fap with leather
suspenders with a front cross strap.
This outft is accessorized with a white
shirt, long socks and boots. And men
shouldnt forget their Trachten hats,
which is a German-style hiking hat typ-
ically adorned with a tuft of goat hair.
For the women, a dirndl is a full
wide skirt with a tight waistband. This
outft also consists of a bodice, blouse
and apron. When women tie their bow
on the left, that means theyre single,
while the opposite side means they are
already taken.
* Indulge in the cuisine. Another great
tradition of Oktoberfest is the great
food. The beer consumed at Oktober-
fest tends to be somewhat heavy and
potent, so
revelers of-
ten con-
sume large
amounts of
food. Hendl
is a favor-
ite dish and
consists of
whole chick-
ens grilled on
a spit and often
sold in halves. In
addition, another fa-
vorite dish is Weisswuerste,
which includes steamed white veal
sausages served with sweet mustard,
sauerkraut and some bread. And those
who arent squeamish about what they
eat might want to try Haxn, which are
also known as pork knuckles.
* Do the Chicken Dance. Want to
make your Oktoberfest as authentic as
the one in Germany? Then you might
be surprised to learn that an Oktober-
fest simply isnt an Oktoberfest with-
out the Chicken Dance. Dancers make
chicken beaks with their hand and
open and close them to the music. How
authentic your chicken dance becomes
is up to you, but keep in mind you will
have to put your beer down to dance.
* Turn up the music. Oktoberfest is a
raucous party, and no raucous party is
complete without music. Yodeling, pol-
kas and brass bands are staples of Okto-
berfest, but once the beer gets fowing,
revelers have been known to sing along
to John Denvers Country Roads. Be-
fore each song, bands typically offer up
ein Prosit der Gemuetlichkeit, a toast
to contentment and relaxation.

Oktoberfest may be best
known for beer, beer, and
more beer, but, at more than
200 years old, it is also one
of the longest-running
German traditions. While
drinking Oktoberfest-
approved beer is an im-
portant component of the
festivities, there are many
traditional foods and ac-
tivities associated with
Oktoberfest as well.
The Oktoberfest event
may trace its origins back to
October 12, 1810, when Crown
Prince Ludwig married Princess
Therese of Bavaria. The citizens of Mu-
nich were invited to attend the wed-
ding festivities, which took place in
the felds in front of the city gates. The
felds were later named Theresienwise
(Theresas meadow) after the princess.
Horse races took place, and those races
were repeated the following year. As a
result, Oktoberfest became an annual
celebration.
Oktoberfest has evolved throughout
the years to include many signifcant
traditions. Since 1950, the festival opens
with a twelve gun salute and the tap-
ping of the frst keg of Oktoberfest beer
at 12:00 p.m. by the Mayor of Munich.
He cries, O zapft ist! (Its tapped! in
the Austro-Bavarian language) and off-
cially opens the Oktoberfest. The Mayor
then gives the frst beer to the Minister-
President of the State of Bavaria.
To qualify as Oktoberfest beer, a
brew must conform to the Reinheitsge-
bot, a German beer purity law. It must
have a minimum of 6 percent alcohol.
The beer also must be brewed within
the city limits of Munich.
Oktoberfest participants wear tradi-
tional Bavarian hats, which are made
with a tuft of goat hair -- a
prized and expensive item in
Germany.
The Oktoberfest is
known as the Largest
Volksfest (Peoples Fair)
in the world. More than
7 million people are ex-
pected to participate this
year. Amid the festivi-
ties and the abundance
of alcohol that is served,
it may seem like it would
be a chaotic event. How-
ever, most Oktoberfests oc-
cur without incident thanks to
emergency medical care on hand.
Those who underestimate their ability
to handle the rich beer tend to pass out
from drunkeness and are dubbed Bier-
leichen, or beer corpses.
Along with beer, many traditional
foods are served at Oktoberfest festi-
vals -- from hendl (chicken) to knoedel
(dumplings). Other Bavarian delicacies
are served, including obatzda, a cheese
spread.
To enjoy an Oktoberfest event at
home, try making obatzda yourself.
Obatzda
3 cups aged soft cheese, either Camem-
bert, Romadur or Brie
1 cup butter, cut into small pieces
3 roasted cloves of garlic
1/4 cup German ale
1/2 teaspoon sweet paprika
1/4 cup diced onion
Pinch of caraway seeds
Salt and pepper to taste
Bread or pretzels
In a bowl, mix all ingredients (ex-
cept bread or pretzels) together until
smooth and allow to sit, covered in the
refrigerator, for several hours until the
favors meld.

Tuesdays with Morrie tells the true
story of the friendship that blossomed
between Morrie Schwartz and his for-
mer student Mitch Albom. Schwartz had
been diagnosed with Lou Gehrigs dis-
ease (ALS). Once Albom hears the news
he intends to visit his beloved college
professor and say goodbye. What he
didnt realize is Schwartzs disease will
pull the two men close together in a
way that Albom will never forget.
The story became a best selling book,
and is currently being shown on the
Rosebud Theatre stage. On Oct. 20
Rosebud Theatre is partnering with the
ALS Society of Alberta to raise money
as well as awareness about the fatal dis-
ease.
Were delighted to partner with the
ALS Society of Alberta to help promote
awareness of the excellent services and
support they provide for those living
with this disease, says Adam Furfaro,
Executive Director of Rosebud Centre
of the Arts in a press release.
We are hopeful that Morries sto-
ry can bring some comfort and joy to
those whose lives have been affected by
ALS, including friends and family sup-
porting a loved one.
The shows powerful yet simple mes-
sage resonated deeply with audiences
on opening weekend. Many patrons
remarked that the number of laughs
equaled the number of tears. Gather
up your loved ones and come see this
show together.
For every ticket booked with a special
code for the matinee performance Rose-
bud Centre of the Arts will donate $5 to
the ALS Society of Alberta. Supporters
of the ALS Society of Alberta are asked
to contact 403-228-3857 for the special
promotion code and pricing of $64.58
Adult, $58.28 Senior, $32.29 Child (all
prices include GST). Tickets can then be
purchased online at www.rosebudthe-
atre.com or by calling 1-800-267-7553.
Show ticket includes a buffet lunch at
the Rosebud Mercantile at 11:00 am
with the performance to follow at 1:30
pm in the Opera House. Rosebud The-
atre is about an hours drive northeast
of Calgary, nestled in the picturesque
hamlet of Rosebud, Alberta.

A mascot is the embodiment of school/team spirit
and cheer. They can get the crowd excited and a team
pumped. Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) has been open for
nine years this year and it is thanks to the 2012 gradu-
ating class that they can now proudly say they have a
mascot.
Each year our Grade 12 kids leave a legacy gift and
its not always something that stays in the school but this
year it was. They decided to purchase a school mascot,
said Principle Lavern Evans.
Its good, its good for the culture, good for the iden-
tity of the building. Its kind of like a branding or a sym-
bol to associate with Holy Cross. Its surprising what a
mascot can really do when you see it, like how much
energy it can bring to a crowd, its kind of neat.
The legacy gift is a way to give back, which is some-
thing the school feels is important. Some grads have do-
nated to a charity in town, and others have purchased
items the school was missing, like a trophy case.
There are meetings held once a month throughout the
school year. At the frst meeting a few ideas are tossed
around and then they vote on the fnal idea.
Were in the process now of what are we going to
name it and is that going to be a student competition
or just they can put in some entries and we vote on it
as a school or as a staff, so were kind of throwing that
out right now. Its a hawk but we need a frst name, or a
name so thats the next step, said Evans.
Its awesome, its our frst mascot, said HCC student

In a weekend where the Bisons
gained their frst win of the season
and split a pair of road games, goal-
tending was under the spotlight for
the brass of the local triple-A midget
team.
Even in their win over the Grande
Prairie Storm on Oct. 6, the Bisons
allowed four goals.
At the end of the day, our goalten-
ding needs to be a lot stronger, said
Friesen. We let in a couple of goals
that were the difference (in Sundays
game). We just have to have those
saves.
They need to be more aggressive
both of them are playing way too
deep in their net, which is result-
ing in, one, they are getting beat by
pucks they should be stopping and
the second thing is, they are putting
rebounds into pretty key areas where
it is that are almost impossible for
them to get back to and recover.
They are both quality goalten-
ders all the guys on the team know
what these two (goalies) are capable
of and they all believe in them.
The Bisons recorded their frst in
of the season when they made the
long trek to Grande Prairie. They
used a four-goal third period to pro-
pel them to a 7-4 win.
The Bisons took a short-lived third
period lead in the game against the
Gregg Distributors, before falling
6-4.
We did such a great job creating
momentum for ourselves and put
ourselves in a position to succeed,
said Friesen. Im really happy with
the guys effort we took a step in
the right direction with how we want
to play. Its a game we deserved a lot
better fate in.
The Bisons will look to end their
six-game road trip on a positive note
when they tangle with the Calgary
Buffaloes Oct. 10 (result not avail-
able as of press time) and the Medi-
cine Hat Southeast Tigers on Oct. 14.
The home opener is slated for Oct.
20 (5:30 p.m.) when they host the
Fort Saskatchewan Rangers.
Looking for
net gains
The Strathmore Spartans peewee football team lost their frst game of the season Oct. 6 in Lacombe. The Spartans will look to get back to their
winning ways Oct. 13.

Evans said there are lots of kids that want to be the
mascot but it takes the right kid with the right amount
of energy to fll the role. Discussions have already be-
gun about possible legacy gifts from the 2013 graduat-
ing class. The possibility of having more tables installed
outside is one option. Another is repainting the logo in
the centre of the gym, which currently has the Sacred
Heart Academy logo. Evans said both ideas are good
ones, and its just a matter of voting and picking one.
This early in the year, though, the idea could change
and the gift could be something completely different
come graduation.

The Wheatland Chiefs began the 2012-
2013 season by winning two of three
games on the road and outscoring their
opposition 18-9 in the process.
The local double-A midget team de-
feated the CNHA Calgary Canucks 5-3 in
the season opener on Oct. 3, before los-
ing 5-2 to the Airdrie Lightning on Oct.
6. The Chiefs bounced back in a big way
the following day, when they throttled
the Medicine Hat Venom 11-1.
Dalton Dubetz recorded three goals
and two assists (all in one game) to lead
the Chiefs during the weekend, while
Dakoda Herman and Coltyn Herman
each recorded two goals and two assists.
The team showed a very balanced at-
tack, with Tyson Kapty, Jordan Jarvis,
Kristian Ayoungman, Tyler Sharuga,
Taylor Donner and Brandon Russell
each recording three points.
The Chiefs will now travel to Co-
chrane on Oct. 19 to face the Bow Val-

winning two of three
ley Timberwolves, before hosting their
season opener Oct. 19 in Hussar (7:30
p.m.) against the Okotoks Oilers.

The Wheatland Warriors got back to
the .500 mark with a pair of road victo-
ries this past weekend.
The double-A bantam team defeated
the Badlands Longhorns 6-3 on Oct.
6, before posting a 2-1 against the Red
Deer Ramada on Oct. 7.
After allowing the frst two goals
against the Longhorns, the Warriors
scored fve unanswered goals en route
to the win.
Chris Rebeyka scored twice and Matt
Halkovic added a goal and an assist
to lead the way for the Warriors. Scott
Desserre and Kody Hammond also tal-
lied for Wheatland, while Rob Butter-
wick added a pair of assists.
The following day in Red Deer, Re-
beyka opened the scoring, before Ryan
Bell scored the game winner, with the
assist going to Joel Saraceni.
Wheatland will now travel to Innisfail
on Oct. 13 before hosting the Red Deer
Steel Kings Oct. 14 (4:15 p.m.) at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
braves on fire
The Wheatland Braves improved to
4-0 on the season, after posting a pair
of road wins this past weekend. The
Braves hammered the Lacombe Rockets
11-2 on Oct. 6, before remaining unde-
feated with a 5-3 win against the Red
Deer Parkland.
The local double-A peewee team has
collected all four wins on the road, out-
scoring the opposition 35-10 in the pro-
cess. The Braves have a well-balanced
attack, led by Lucas Muenchrath, who
has four goals and six assists for 10
points in four games. Cole Reinhardt
has nine points in four games, while
Joel Krahenbil, Rylan Longmuir, Brady
Skiffngton and Isaac Benoit each have
seven points so far this season.
Wheatland will now travel to Cran-
brook and Brooks this coming week-
end, before hosting their home opener
Oct. 19 (7:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore

and please come on out and show your support.
We have had a very busy summer and now our club is

wonderful meal along with free rodeo tickets.
We had more members than ever attend 4-H camps
