Splicing, Jointing & Termination

Fiber Optic Splicing & Termination

1. Splicing FO Ring & Access
a. Make sure that all of the below tools and equipment is ready : 1. Cutting Tools (Hand saws, etc) 2. FO cable stripper 3. FO Core Cleaver 4. Splice Closure + Protection Sleeves 5. Splicing Equipment 6. Genset & Lamp set 7. Tent/Large Umbrella 8. Knife Cutter 9. Pliers 10. Linen and Alcohol/Thinner 11. Tissue & Cotton 12. Marker 13. Isolation tape 14. Tie-rope 15. Measuring Tape 16. OTDR Things to be consider 1. All equipment and tools must be in good condition and clean.

2. To do the cutting/stripping of the cable, hand should always behind the cutter. 3. Dont step up the fiber tube, it will cause damage of the FO core. 4. Keep away the alcohol from eye. 5. Dont slack the core with very small radius, the minimum radius is approx. 8cm. 6. Dont throw away the cutting core everywhere, put it in save bin or stick it to the isolation tape.

Fiber Optic Jointing Procedure Step by step a. b. c. d. Setup the tent or big umbrella to prevent the rain or heat of sundries. Setup the Genset and power cable for power supply. Prepare the cables which need to splice. Strip back about 2 meters of fiber cable skin to expose the fiber loose tubes or tight buffered fibers. Use cable rip cord to cut through the fiber skin. Then carefully peel back the skin and expose the insides tubes. Cut off the excess skin. Clean off all cable gel with cable gel remover. Separate the fiber loose tubes and buffers by carefully cutting away any yarn or sheath. Leave enough of the strength member to properly secure the cable in the splice enclose. For the aerial cable, because theres any metal to support the cable (messenger wire) it required to be stripped first. Strip the tube protection (black one), to do this, it needs to consider below thing: Do it slowly little by little (approximately per 25cm with handsaw and not too deep to prevent any damage to the optic tube. Break it slowly and turn the tube protection to release it from the whole part. Pull the protection so the yarn will expose, cut the yarn then only the tube will shows. Clean the tubes from jelly with linen and thinner B. For a loose tube fiber cable, strip away about 2 meters of fiber tube using a buffer tube stripper and expose the individual fibers. Carefully clean all fibers in the loose tube of any filling gel with cable gel remover. Coiling the fiber optic core rounded for it to be secure. Secure the end of the loose tube to the splice tray and lay out cleaned and separated fibers on the table. Strip and clean the other cable tubes fiber that is to be spliced, and secure to the splice tray. Do the Splicing. 1. Connect the Splicer and OTDR to the Genset to get sufficient power to work on. 2. Prepared the cores which need to join 3. Put a fusion splice protection sleeve onto the fiber being spliced. 4. Strip the core from it jacket, for this use the special pliers (fiber stripper). 5. Carefully clean the stripped bare fiber with lint-free wipes soaked in isopropyl alcohol. After cleaning, prevent the fiber from touching anything. 6. When it clean then put the core into the cleaver to cut the fiber core. 7. With a high precision fiber cleaver, cleave the fiber to a specified length according to the fusion splicers manual. 8. Strip, clean and cleave the other fiber to be spliced. 9. Place both fibers in the fusion splicer and do the fusion splice according to its manual. 10. Push the SET button to jointing these two cores automatically. Heat shrink the fusion splice protection sleeve. Slide the fusion splice protection sleeve on the joint and put it into the heat shrink oven, and press the heat button.

m. Place splice into splice tray. Carefully place the finished splice into the splice tray and loop excess fiber around its guides. Ensure that the fibers minimum bending radius is not compromised. n. Repeat the process (k2-10) for another core. o. Repeat the process (f-m) for another tube. p. Perform an OTDR test of the splice and redo the splice if necessary. q. After all fibers have been spliced, carefully close the splice tray and place it into the splice enclosure. r. Close the closure properly as per given manual. s. Run the flush test to ensure that theres no leaking inside the closure. t. Put the closure at the assigned place. u. Filled up the DSD.
