Welcome to Install Creator Pro

The most versatile and professional way to rapidly distribute your applications

To discover or use all the functions and power of Install Creator Pro, you can: Use the Wizard which will guide you step by step through the creation of your install program. Study the different elements of the interface and their functionality. Discover tips and tricks that will allow you to work more productively with Install Creator Pro and profit from its power. If you have already used Install Creator you can learn about the specific features of Install Creator Pro. If you have already used Clickteam Install Maker Pro, you can learn about what's new in Install Creator Pro.

Install Creator Pro is an amazingly versatile installation program builder. With just a few mouse clicks, you will be able to gather and compress a large number of files in one single executable file and then be able to distribute it to your users so that they can install your product using a clear and simple interface. While being very simple to use, Install Creator Pro allows you to personalize the installation program and use all the resources of the Windows environment (adding icons to the Start Menu and desktop, un-installation from the Control Panel, management of dll, Ini files and the registry). Install Creator Pro also adds these advanced features: Multiple versions in a single installer... This feature allows you to create installers with demo/registered versions, multi-language versions, and light, medium, and full install versions! See The different versions, Multi-lingual installer, Demo and registered version, minimum, normal, and full. Password protected install programs and user registration tool... These features allow you to create installers that require a registration code to allow your users to install them. This is an ideal solution for you distribute your applications with a demo and registered version. Let the user try out the program and then if they want, they can register with you and you can provide them with a registration code to unlock the application. The Registration tool is the key to this and generates the registration codes. It even will create an email text file with all the information so that you can easily send it to the customer. This powerful feature simplifies the task of writing to INI files and creating registry keys. It is very powerful and very easy to use. See the Install Info tab.

Install Creator Pro is the solution for you and your programs: All the files in one The installation program will contain all your files. It does not need any other program, dll or other library files to run in the Windows environment. Simple for you It allows you to select a single directory since the Wizard will automatically create all files and sub-directories that it needs to install on the destination machine. That's with the Wizard or you can choose to use the main interface, where you will have access to multiple options. This is also just as simple to operate and you can personalize your installation program in much more detail. Easy Installation/Un-installation Your users have only to click on your installation program and follow the instructions. All your files will be directly installed on their hard disk. Install Creator Pro will add (if you wish it) a program group of icons in the Start menu and on the desktop. An uninstall icon will allow the user to automatically remove your whole application without leaving a trace. A fully optimized program The install program added to your files is highly compact. It takes up approximately 85 kb including texts of the installation wizard (130 Kb with uninstall program and standard bitmaps). To the simplicity of Install Creator Pro is added a performance way beyond similar programs in its category. Gain more space The compression capabilities integrated into Install Creator Pro allows (according to the structure of files) a reduction of the volume of data by up to 80% in the installation program. What's new in Clickteam Install Creator Pro vs. Clickteam Install Maker Pro...

General Interface - Better UI with customizable toolbar and menu. - When you load an installer settings file and files have been added or removed since the last time the settings file was modified, Install Creator shows you the files that have been added and/or removed. - You can now select several source directories for each version, so you haven't to duplicate all the files for each version if they share files. - New /R command line option to open the registration tool Note: Install Creator Pro uses the same file extension for the project files as Install Maker Pro: .iip. The IMP project files can be loaded in ICP, but you cannot load ICP project files with IMP. When you load a .iip file created with Install Maker Pro and save it, Install Creator Pro will copy the old .iip file to a .001 file before saving, for the case you would need later to load this file with Install Maker Pro. Install Programs Look & Feel - You can now customize entirely the dialog boxes of your install programs, change the size, font, colors, control properties, etc. You can export your dialog box templates for reusing them in other installers. - You can insert tags into the texts to modify the style of parts of text (bold, italic, underline, strikeout, color, font size, links) - The URLs in your texts are automatically transformed to links (+ you can add hidden links with the <link> tag) - You can hide some pages or make silent install programs. - There is a new License page with I Agree / I Disagree buttons. - You can choose the background and text colors of the background window, have a background bitmap per screen resolution, and choose several alignment options for text and bitmap. - You can use your own icons for the installer and the uninstaller. - The Browse Directory dialog box, in the install programs, is now a Windows explorer. Compression - Better compression, IC uses 2 different algorithms and chooses the best one for each file. - There is even a "Maximum compression" option in the Build tab, which allows you to compress yet better certain files. - The runtime itself is compressed, so its size is the same as the previous version, although it contains more features. New file options - You can associate icon files with the shortcuts you install. - You can install each file to custom directories. - You can run or view several files during the installation. - You can choose not to install a file if a file with the same name already exists. - You can choose the versions of Windows a file can be installed to. - You can prevent the user to stop the installation when it's in progress after a specific file has been installed. - You can prevent the installation if files are in use. Download - You can now make your installer download files from a server. Build - You can now indicate a maximum size for the installer, and IC will cut the installer into several files if necessary. - You can save the log file to a text file in the Build page. Uninstaller - There is now a progress bar while installed components are being removed. - New option to launch a file at the beginning of the uninstallation. - New option to view an URL at the end of the uninstallation. - New option not to add an Uninstall entry in the control panel. - New option to add uninstall information to an uninstaller already installed. Miscellaneous features - You can make your installer not to start if a key exists in the registry and a command line option is used. - You can make your installer not to run if a file is not installed. - ICP creates for you the key required to associate a file extension to your program. - The installer can now install up to 16 versions. Registration Tool - The registration tool is now more user friendly. - A version can be protected with 3 kinds of registration code. - New short registration codes with alpha-numeric characters. - New short registration codes with numeric characters. - The protection of the registration codes has been reinforced, the product code can now contain up to 16 characters.

- You can now deactivate certain registration codes. - If a file reginfo.txt is in the same directory as the installer, the installer automatically reads the registration code from this file. Changes / Incompatibility problems - Unlike Install Maker Pro, Install Creator cannot generate Windows 3.1 install programs.

What's new in Install Creator Pro vs. Install Creator...

Installation of multiple versions of a product This feature allows you to create installers with demo/registered versions, multi-language versions, and much more. Installation of password-protected versions of a product Create installers that require a registration code to allow your users to install them. A Registration tool allows you to generate the user registration codes. Ability to write strings to the Registry, .ini files or any file. This powerful feature simplifies the task of writing to INI files and creating registry keys. Ability for your install program to download files to install from a server This feature allows you to accelerate the downloading time of your install program before it starts, and/or to optimize the download if certain files do not need to be installed. Ability to create silent installers With this option, create install programs that run silently. Various new File options - ability to prevent a file to be installed on certain Windows platforms - ability to install icons for all the user accounts on Windows NT/2000/XP - option to prevent the installation to start if a file is in use - option to prevent the installation to start if a certain file is not installed Ability to run a program before the uninstaller and to display an URL at the end of the uninstallation With this option, you can customize the uninstallation process, e.g. remove user files, etc.

Wizard
When you use Install Creator Pro for the first time, it prompts you to use the Wizard to make your install program. Using simple dialog boxes, the Wizard asks you step by step for all the necessary elements to produce your installation program. When all the dialog boxes have been completed, you will be ready to build your install program. At each stage, when the, [Preview] button is active, you can see instantly how your install program is progressing. When the [Back] and [Next] buttons are active, you will be able to move easily between the different stages of your install program. When the [Next] button is inactive, it means that the Wizard hasn't got all the necessary information to move on yet. Check to see if you have completed all the necessary requirements for this stage. At any time, the [Cancel] button closes the Wizard and you will find yourself in the main Install Creator Pro interface. The [Help] button allows you easy access to the specific help section for the stage you are on. Each dialog box explains what is required by Install Creator Pro to make your program. Use the following presentation of the different stages of the Wizard to prepare yourself for what Install Creator Pro needs to make your install program. Once you are confident with Install Creator Pro you can deactivate the Wizard by selecting Preferences in the File Menu and un-checking the appropriate box.

Wizard - Welcome

To de-activate the Wizard

When this option is checked, you can leave the Wizard. In the future when you launch Install Creator Pro, you will directly access the main interface. In the File Menu under preferences, you will be able re-activate the Wizard when you start a new project.

Choice of directory - Selecting the files to install

All files contained in the selected directory will be included in the install program. To help with selecting the directory use the [Browse] button.

Sub-directories
If the Include Sub-directories option is selected, all files that they contain will be included. During the installation, these sub-directories will be recreated relative to the installation directory.

Wizard - Name of your Product

Language
Allows you to choose the default language for the installation text. In this version texts are in French or English. You can use your own model texts by selecting them here. In order to use this function you should have used the export function in a previous stage so that the .txt file is accessible in the subdirectory, Templ of Install Creator Pro. You will find new installation texts in numerous languages on the Clickteam Internet web site at the following address http://www.clickteam.com in the Install Creator Download area.

Name of your product

This is the name of your product that will be used by default in all texts, replacing the macro #title.

Preview
Click on this button for an overview of your install program. This test is for viewing only and does not function as your actual program will.

Wizard - Version

Install Creator Pro allows you to include several versions (or configurations) into your install program. The user can choose the configuration s/he wants to install in the Choose Version screen of your install program:

Version Name
Enter the name of the current version here. This name appears in the Choose Version screen above. The Wizard will ask you later if you want to add another version to your install program. If your install program installs only one version, ignore this screen and go to the next Wizard stage.

Code
Install Creator Pro lets you protect your installers with a full featured registration code system. If you want to protect the current version, enter here a code, also called Product Code. This code, between 8 and 16 characters, will be used to generate user registration codes with the Install Creator Pro registration tool. In your install program, the user will have to enter a registration code in a Registration screen, as shown below, to unlock the installation.

Generate Short Registration Codes

If this option is selected, the user registration codes are short (between 19 and 21 characters). E.g. A78GHY-8HD62GS8-GHA9DG If this option is not selected, the user registration codes have a variable size and the Registration screen only contains one edit box. In this mode, the registration codes contain the user name and other info if specified in the registration tool. Example of such a code: #S#LKKHGALUIEYPUE9YZT38HEJD83HDIU89J2OK8ZE72HIZ982NDIOZ02JDBDSU728D37837DH298SH#E#.

Only Numbers
This option is available only for the short registration codes. If it's selected, the registration codes will contain only 20 numbers, like this: 192735-85835212973287 Note: In the main interface of Install Creator Pro, you can also indicate a list of "banned" registration codes, i.e. a list of registration codes that will have no effect if entered by the user.

Preview
Click on the Preview buttons for an overview of your install program. The first button displays the Choose Version page, the second button displays the Registration page.

Wizard - Installation window

Choose the appearance of the installation window as well as the background color and title that will be displayed in the top left corner (in full screen version). If you choose "No Window", the install program will have no window and will run silently. Note: this feature is not available in the demo version of Install Creator Pro.

Wizard - Installation window image

With the help of the dialog box, choose any image to display in the background of the installation window.

Background
Select a BMP image of 16 or 256 colors. This page is displayed only if you have chosen full screen mode for your installation.

Options
Stretch : the image will be resized to the size of the screen. Pattern : the image will be reproduced as a mosaic (tiled) in the background.

Alignment
If the image is not stretched or tiled, select the alignment options to align it with the borders of the window, or to center it.

Wizard - Installation Dialog Boxes

Template
Allows you to choose the default template for the installation dialog boxes. 3 templates are provided with Install Creator, 2 "classic" templates to keep the compatibility with the appearance of the install programs created with Install Maker, and a Default template with a more modern design. You can use your own templates. In order to use this function, you should have used the Export Wizard Template function in a previous stage so that the .imt file is accessible in the Templ sub-directory of Install Creator.

Left Bitmap
If the dialog box template contains a left pane with a bitmap, you can change the bitmap here. Click the Preview button to display a page with a bitmap in the left pane.

Top Bitmap
If the dialog box template contains a top pane with a bitmap, you can change the bitmap here. Click the Preview button to display a page with a bitmap in the top pane.

Wizard - Information/warning texts

In this window you can type the text to display at the beginning of the installation. If you don't type any text this screen will not appear during the installation of your application.

Wizard - License Agreement

In this window you can type the text of your license agreement to display at the beginning of the installation. If you don't type any text this screen will not appear during the installation of your application.

Wizard - Installation directory

Indicate the default directory where you want your program to install your application. If this directory doesn't exist on your user's hard disk, your install program will prompt the user to agree to create it or not. You can use directories defined in the Registry or in an INI file in the Windows directory. More information about how to get a directory pathname from the registry or an INI file in the Options tab of the main interface.

Wizard - Configuration of the Start menu and desktop shortcut

This stage of the Wizard allows you to choose how your users will access your application and is optional. If you don't complete any of the fields at this stage, this option will not be activated during your program's installation.

File
With the help of the browse button, you can select the file your users will be able to access to start your application. Usually it should be a program file (.exe) but if it is a web site, you could choose the welcome page (e.g. index.html).

Icon name
If you choose a file to add to the Start menu, you will have to give a name to its shortcut (the Next button remains inactive until you have provided a name for the icon).

Add Desktop Shortcut

This check box allows you to add a desktop shortcut for the main start file of your application.

ICO file to associate with the desktop shortcut

Enter in this field the name of a .ico file to associate with your shortcut. This .ico file must be installed with your application files. Note: in the main interface of Install Creator Pro you can also choose to install these shortcuts for all users on Windows NT/2000/XP machines.

Wizard - Final installation page

When your user arrives at the final installation page, you have the option to allow them to activate an information file to view and/or run your application. In each case, choose which file to activate with the help of the [Browse] buttons. The main interface of Install Creator Pro gives you other options to view or run files at different stages of the installation.

Wizard - Uninstaller

This stage of the Wizard allows you to include an uninstaller program so that your user will be able to easily uninstall your product.

If you want to add another version to your install program, click the Other Version button, the Wizard will prompt you for the settings of this other version.

Wizard - Leaving the Wizard

By clicking on the [Finish] button you automatically start the build process of your installation program. By checking the box [Do not build...] you access the main interface. All previously selected options will be retained.

Main Interface
The main interface is composed of the following elements: The Menus

File This menu contains the main options for saving and loading project files to re-use, and the importing and exporting of parameters to create or modify installation programs. It also provides access to Install Creator Pro's preferences View Allows you to organize how Install Creator Pro looks Tools Allows you to have an overview of the installation program, launch the build process and access the registration tool Help Access to the help and information about Install Creator Pro, including registration The Toolbar

For direct access to the main functions. The Version Combo Box

This combo box allows you to select the version for which you want to modify the settings. Click the Edit button to open the Version dialog box, to add or remove a version, or protect it with registration codes. The Tabs

These represent the main composing areas of your installation project, and are made up as follows: Files To choose the files to install and their parameters. Wizard Texts Tab to personalize the installation Wizard texts and dialog boxes. Window Tab to personalize the installation window. Options Tab to personalize the destination directory and select general options. Install Info Tab to enter strings to write to the registry or files after the installation. Uninstaller Personalize the un-installation program. Build Execute and visualize the construction of the installation program.

Menus

File Allows you to manage, save or modify parameters of several installation programs and gives access to Install Creator Pro's preferences. View Activate, de-activate or customize the Toolbar. Tools Test or Build the installation program, or opens the Registration tool. Help Help file and "About..." section.

File Menu

New This function allows you to create a new installation project. If a model is already under way, Install Creator Pro prompts you to save any modifications before closing it. Open Open an existing project. Allows you to use the personalized sections of the different tabs from a previous session. If a model is already under way, Install Creator Pro prompts you to save any modifications before closing it. Save Saves the current installation project under its name and in its directory of origin. Allows you to preserve all the personalized sections of the different tabs of the current session. If a model is saved for the first time, to Save functions as to Save As... Save As... Saves the personalized sections of the different tabs of the current session in the directory of your choice with the name of your choice. We recommend you choose a characteristic name and save to the root directory of your install program (see Tips and Tricks). Export Wizard Texts Saves all the Wizard texts of the installation program into a text file. This option is very useful if you want to re-use texts from another project, without having to re-enter all the text information into the Wizard texts tab. By default these are saved in the Templ directory situated in the Install Creator Pro folder. You will find a list of your files in a browse files window when you choose this option. Import Wizard Texts Replaces all texts of the current session by the contents in the selected file. This does not modify the different options of the installation project, only the texts and allows you to rapidly produce multi-language versions. Note: only the non-empty texts are replaced by this command. If you want to reset a text to its default value, right click this text in the Wizard Texts tab and select an option in the Default menu. Connect to http://www.clickteam.com and open the Install Creator Pro section for a list of downloadable installation texts in many languages. Export Wizard Template Saves the settings of the dialog boxes of the installation program into a file. This option is very useful if you want to re-use the same dialog boxes in another project, without having to reedit them with the Dialog Box Editor. By default these are saved in the Templ directory situated in the Install Creator Pro folder. You will find a list of your files in a browse files window when you choose this option. Note: the saved file only contains the dialog box settings (colors, dimensions, control properties), it does not include the settings of the main window, nor the texts of the install program. Import Wizard Template Replaces the settings of the dialog boxes of the installation program by the contents in the selected file. This does not modify the settings of the main window or the texts of the install program. Preferences Opens the Preferences dialog box. Recent files list A list of the last Install Creator Pro projects opened. Exit Closes the program.

View Menu

Standard Toolbar Allows the Toolbar to be displayed or hidden. Select this option if your screen area is limited. Status Toolbar Allows the status bar to be displayed or hidden. Select this option if your screen area is limited. Customize Opens the Customize Toolbars dialog box. This dialog box allows you to modify the menu, toolbar and others options of the interface

Tools Menu

Test Install Wizard At any time you are able to test any aspect of the Installation Wizard. This test doesn't save any file on disk and shows you how your final installer will look. Build Install Program This option displays the Build section of the interface and starts the Build process. Install Creator Pro then explores the different files contained in the project and compresses them within the install program. Users This option displays the registration tool which allows you to generate user registration codes. Other Options The other options are user-defined tools. You can add your own tools with the Tools tab of the Customize Toolbars dialog box.

Registration Tool
The Registration Tool is opened when you select the Tools / Users menu option. It allows you to generate user registration codes for your products. Your users can then use these registration codes to unlock the install program. The Registration Tool is an independent tool. It saves the product and user information in a text file List.txt in the Install Creator Pro directory. It does not save this information in your installer settings. Install Creator Pro allows you to protect your install program with 3 kinds of registration codes: Long registration codes These codes contain all the user information (name, company name, serial number, etc) and thus have a variable size. They are recommended for shareware applications. Example of long registration codes: #S#LKKHGALUIEYPUE9YZT38HEJD83HDIU89J2OK8ZE72HIZ982NDIOZ02JDBDSU728D37837DH298SH#E#. Short registration codes The size of these codes is limited to around 20 alpha-numeric characters (more precisely between 19 and 21 characters). They only contain a serial number, so the user must enter his/her name and company name in the install program. You can use this type of code if you need to print the registration codes to stickers. Example of such a code: A78GHY8HD62GS8-GHA9DG. Short, numeric registration codes The size of these codes is limited to 20 numbers. They only contain a serial number, so the user must enter his/her name and company name in the install program. E.g. 19273585835212-973287 When your install program is protected, it automatically includes a Registration screen and the user must enter a registration code to continue the installation.

How to protect your install program with registration codes

1. Setup your installer settings 2. Open the Registration tool 3. Add a new product 4. Setup the product to suit your needs 5. Add a new user for your product 6. Add a new group of users for your product 7. Test the registration code in your installer

1. Setup your installer settings From the main interface, click the Edit button above the tabs, to open the Versions dialog box. Select the version you want to protect, enter a product code and (optional) select the Short codes and/or Only Numbers options if you want to generate short registration codes. Refer to the Versions page for more information. Your install program is now protected. 2. Open the menu and select "Tools / Users"

This screen is divided in 2 parts: - the product list, where you can add new products. - the settings of the selected product in the product list, and users for this product. The buttons above the product list allow you to add, remove or move a product.

The Close button closes the dialog box and saves the product and user list to a list.txt in the directory of Install Creator Pro (the "user database"). When you click the Close button, Install Creator Pro asks you if you want to save the changes. You can remove this message and automatically save the change if you check the "Always save list when exiting registration tool" option in the Preferences. The Cancel button closes the dialog box without saving the changes. The Save button allows you to save the latest changes without closing the dialog box. 3. Add a new product

Click the New button above the Products list, enter the name of the product you want to protect, press Enter and select it in the list. 4. Setup the product to suit your needs

Enter in the Product code box the same product code you have entered in the Versions dialog box. This code allows the Registration tool to generate codes for your install program. If you enter a different product code, the registration codes generated for this product won't work with your install program. The Product code can have between 8 and 16 characters. A 16-character code is better protected than a 8-character code. The Random button generates a random product code. Avoid common names for product codes, and mix numbers and alphabetic characters, so that the code is not easy to guess. Options:

Short: reduces the size of the registration codes to 19 / 21 alpha-numeric characters. Only Numbers: reduces the size of the registration codes to 20 numbers. Include User E-mail Address: includes the user e-mail address in the registration code. Only possible with long registration codes. Include User info: includes the user information in the registration code. Only possible with long registration codes. Expire after: makes the registration codes to expire after a certain number of days, months, years. Enter below the number of days, months, years during which a registration code will work after its creation. Note: if you have previously used Install Maker Pro to generate user registration codes for the same product, and want the registration codes generated by Install Creator Pro work in your install program created with Install Maker Pro, then you must not select any of the options above and must use the same product code as the one used by Install Maker Pro. Mail Template:

You can also enter a text template that can be used to generate mails to your users. For more information, look at the MailTmpl.txt example provided with Install Creator Pro. The mail template is a normal text file with macros that are replaced by your product and user information. The macros you can use are:

#Product# = Product name #UserName# = User name #UserCompany# = User company #UserEmail# = User e-mail address #UserInfo# = User information #UserSerialNumber# = User serial number #RegCode# = User registration code, the one to enter in the install program Refer to the User dialog box for more information.

5. Add a new user for your product

Select the User tab. This tab displays the list of users for your product and allows you to add new users (Add button), to add groups of users (Add Group button), to remove users (Remove button). The Columns button allows you to choose the columns to display in the user list. Click the Add Button. This opens the User dialog box. You can also click the Add Group button to add a group of users.

In this dialog box, you have to enter: - The user name (required) - The user company name (optional) - The user e-mail address (optional) - The user info (optional) - The user serial number (required, see below) - A comment (optional, only displayed in the Registration tool) When you have entered the user information, clicking the Calculate Code button will generate the user registration code, i.e. the one this user will have to enter in your install program in order to unlock it and continue the installation. Example, with a long registration code:

Once the registration code is calculated:

- the Copy & Close button copies the code to the clipboard and closes the dialog box - the Copy mail & Close button loads the mail template, replaces the macros by the corresponding values and copies it to the clipboard - the Save mail button loads the mail template, replaces the macros by the corresponding values and displays a file selector to allow you to save the mail template to a text file You can also change any information and re-calculate the registration code. Serial Numbers The user Serial Number you have to enter in this box must be a 8-digit number between 10000000 and 99999999. The Serial Number is used to generate different registration codes, so it should be different for each user. Unless you want to specify yourself your own serial number, you do not need to do so: when you create a new user, Install Creator Pro automatically takes the higher serial number used in the existing users and adds one. You can also click the Rand button to generate a random serial number. 6. Add a group of users for your product Click the Add Group button in the Users tab to add a group of users to your product. This option is available only if your product uses short registration codes. It allows you to generate lists of registration codes, e.g. when you want to duplicate CD-ROMs and need to print series of registration codes to stickers. The User Group dialog box is similar to the User dialog box.

Changes: - You have to indicate the number of registration codes you want to generate. Enter it in the "Number of serial numbers" box. The first registration code will be calculated with the First Serial number, the second registration code will be calculated with this number plus 1, etc. - When you click the Calculate Code button, all the registration codes are listed in the Registration Codes box. - You cannot use a mail template in this dialog box, you can only copy the list to the clipboard. 7. Test the registration code with your install program Click the Test button in the toolbar and go to the Registration page of your install program.

There are several ways to enter the registration code: - if it's a long registration code, you can click the Browse button and load a text file that contains the code. - you can drag a text file that contains the code and drop it to the Registration screen. - you can also copy the code to the clipboard and paste it to the edit box(es) in the Registration screen. Note: if the registration code is present in the clipboard when your install program is launched, it will be automatically detected and displayed. - the install program can also automatically load the registration code from a reginfo.txt file located in the same directory.

The Toolbar
The tool bar gives you access to the main functions and operations of Install Creator Pro...

New This function allows you to create a new installation project. If you already have a project open, Install Creator Pro prompts you to save it before closing it. Open Opens a previously saved installation project and allows you to re-use personalized sections from a previous install program. If a project is already open, Install Creator Pro will prompt you to save any modifications before closing it. Save Saves the current installation project under its name and in its directory of origin. Allows you to preserve all the settings made to the different tabs for the current session. If a project is being saved for the first time then the Save function acts like Save As. Test At any time you are able to test each part of the Installation Wizard. This test does not save files to disk but just gives an overview of how your final install program will perform during run time. Build This option displays the Build tab in the main interface and launches the build process. Users This option opens the Registration Tool. The Registration Tool allows you to create registration codes for your protected install programs. Help Displays Help. How do you alter the tool bar preferences ? View In the View menu the Toolbar option allows you to deactivate or reactivate the toolbar by checking or un-checking that option. If you select the Customize menu entry, you will access the Customize Toolbar dialog box. Position You can move the Toolbar around the window using the drag&drop technique. In the center of the Window, the bar will remain floating. You can also place it against any edge of the Window.

Toolbar Customize Dialog Box

This dialog box allows you to personalize the menu and toolbar of the program. It contains several tabs: Commands

Displays the list of all the commands. - To add a command to the toolbar, drag it from the Commands list to a toolbar. Note: the menu bar is a toolbar. To add a command to a menu, open the menu and drag the command from the list to the menu. The other commands below apply to the menus too. - To move a command in a toolbar, drag it to another position in the toolbar. - To remove a command from a toolbar, drag it and drop it out of the toolbar. - You can also modify the options of a command. Right click on this command in the toolbar to open the following popup menu:

Reset to Default Resets the command to its default state. Copy Button Image Copies the image of the button to the clipboard. Delete Removes the command from the toolbar. Button Appearance Opens the following dialog box:

In this dialog box you can choose: - to display or not the image and/or the text of the command - to modify the text of the command - and even to change the image. To draw your own image, select the User-defined image mode and either select a pre-defined image in the list, click the New button to create your own image or click the Edit button to edit an existing image. This opens a very simple 16-color Image Editor:

Text / Image and Text Allows you to display the text of the command, the image of the command, or both. Start Group Displays a separator before the command. Toolbars

Displays the list of all the toolbars. Uncheck the boxes to hide a toolbar. Click the Reset button to reset the selected toolbar. Click the Reset All button to rest all the toolbars. Tools

Allows you to add your own tools to the Tools menu. Click the New button above the list to add a new tool. Click the X button to remove a tool and the Move Up ./ Move Down buttons to move the selected tool in the list. To modify a tool, enter the path of the tool's program file in the Command box, any command line parameter in the Arguments box and the directory to set as current directory for the

tool in the Initial Directory box. Keyboard

Allows you to change the keyboard shortcuts used in the program. Select the command to modify, click the Press New Shortcut Key box, press the key you want to assign to the command and click the Assign button to validate it. Click the Reset All button to restore the original shortcut keys of the program. Menu

Allows you to change options for the menu bar. Options

Contains various options for the toolbars. You can choose to show tooltips on tools, display the keyboard shortcut in these tooltips, or display large icons rather than small icons. You can also select the "Menus show recently used commands first" option to hide the options you never use.

The different versions

Thanks to Install Creator Pro, you will be able to create installation programs that have several different versions of your application (Demo, Registered versions etc...). Moreover, you will be able to automatically generate registration codes for your protected versions. This system of multiple versions can also be used in other situations and is very flexible. For example, why not let the user choose the size of the installation of your application by setting up a complete installation, a normal installation and a minimum installation. You can even create demo versions of your software too... you are only limited by your imagination...

The combo box above the tabs allows you to select a version. Once you've selected a version, you can modify the settings of this version (file options, texts, install directory, etc.). The Edit button opens the Versions dialog box:

To add or remove a version

To insert a new version click on the Add button above the list and type the name of the version. To remove it, click on the X button. You can also change the order of the versions with the Move Up and Move Down buttons. The order in the list is the display order in the Choose Version screen of your install program.

To protect a version

If you wish to protect a version, type a code with 8 to 16 characters in the Product Code area. The best codes are those generated while typing randomly on the keyboard: avoid the first names, the common noun, your own name etc. This code will be used as a basis for calculating the registration codes which will allow your users to install this version (see Registration Tool). The "Short registration codes" and "Only numbers" options allow you to choose different types of registration codes. Click the Banned Registration Codes button to enter a list of registration codes you want to disable in your install program. This dialog box is a simple multi-line edit box. Enter one code per line. The codes are verified when you close the dialog box, in order to avoid typing mistakes.

When the user enters one of the banned codes and the "Disable code" option is selected, the code won't work, i.e. the Next button won't be enabled in the registration screen. You can also select the "Install Version #" option and enter the number of a different version to install if the user enters a banned code. The index of the first version in your install program is 1. Note: for security reasons, only a part of the banned codes is stored in your install program, the other part of the code is not stored but replaced by a calculation. So it could happen, in VERY rare cases though, that a valid registration code is confused by your install program with a banned registration code. This has never happened yet at the time this documentation was written, but theoretically this could occur. In this case, you will have to provide the user with a new registration code. Note 2: the Banned Codes feature is not available in the demo version of Install Creator Pro.

To authorize only one version at the same time on the same machine:

Check the mutual exclusion box if you do not want to allow several versions of the same program installed at the same time on the same machine. For example, if you wish to remove a demo version to install the registered version, check this box and Install Creator Pro will launch the uninstaller before launching the installer for the new version.

Settings shared by all the versions

While most settings are specific to each version (installer texts, files, registration codes, install directory, registry keys, uninstaller, etc.), some are common to all the versions. These global settings are: - All the options in the Window tab (i.e. the appearance of the window, except for the texts). - The icon of the installer and the uninstaller, in the Window and Uninstall tabs - The "Do not start installer if..." options in the Options tab - The Download directories in the Options tab - The Maximum File Size in the Build tab All the other options are specific to each version. Do not forget to modify them in each version if necessary. Important: Compression When your install program contains several versions, Install Creator Pro tries to store only the differences between the versions, whenever it's possible. IMPORTANT: the order of the versions is VERY important. For a maximum compression, put first the non-protected versions (e.g. the evaluation version) and then the protected versions (e.g. the registered version). If you put a protected version before an unprotected version, Install Creator Pro will use normal compression routines (zip) to compress the second version, instead of storing only the differences between this version and the first one. The Tabs

Files This tab allows you to specify the files to install and their properties. Wizard Texts In this tab, you can customize the texts and the dialog boxes of your install program. Window Allows you to personalize the appearance of your install program window. Options Allows you to choose the default installation directory and other options. Install Info Use this tab to specify the strings or values you want to write to the registry or a file. Uninstaller Allows you to setup the options of the uninstaller that will be installed by your install program. Build Allows you to build your install program.

Files tab
Source Directories

Enter the directories containing the files you wish to install. Install Creator will display all the files contained in these directories (and sub directories if the "Include sub-directories" box is checked). Note if you enter several source directories : a same file must not be present in several directories with the same subpath name.

Files list

Shows all the files to be processed. This list shows the options selected in File Options next to the name of the files:

f => Do not start installation if file in use h => Do not install this file if a higher version is already installed s => Do not install this file if a file with the same name is already installed w => This file won't be installed on all Windows platforms This information allows you to quickly verify all the options available for your installation program. Note: the options available in the View / Run page have no shortcut above, except for v or r if the file is displayed or run by the install program. To be able to modify the installation properties of one or more files Select the files in the list, by using the usual method (i.e. with SHIFT and CTRL if you want to select several files), then display the appropriate tab from the File Options box; options for this or these files will then be available. Pop-up File Menu

You can also use the pop-up menu by clicking the right mouse button which allows you to select or deselect files in the window. This pop-up menu also contains the command Refresh . It allows you to refresh the contents of the file window if some have been deleted or added during the preparation of the installation program.

File Options
Situated in the same screen as the list of files, this small dialog box of tabs allows you to set attribute options of your files to produce complex installations with just a few mouse clicks. To be able to set attribute options for each file it is necessary that the file is selected in the list of the files. You can then allocate various options to each file. Tabs Start menu Desktop Shortcut View / Run Windows Misc Start Menu

Allows you to create a shortcut to the selected file in the Start menu of Windows. Folder To choose (or to create) a program group in the Start / Programs menu in order to place shortcuts there. You can also use the '>' button to insert macros. Use the #Start Menu# macro to force the shortcut to be created in the root directory of the Start menu, or use the #Startup# macro to force the shortcut to be created in the Startup sub-menu of the Programs menu. You can use the #title macro to insert the name of your program, defined in the Wizard Texts tab. You can create several icons for the same file in several folders of the Start menu. Enter all the folders in the Folder box, separated by semi-colons. E.g. MyCompany\MyProduct;#Startup# will create a shortcut in the MyCompany\MyProduct folder of the Start / Programs menu and a shortcut in the Startup folder of the Start / Programs menu. The path that you indicate concerns only the structure of the shortcut presentation and no sites of files installed. To avoid errors of conflict during the naming of each file to create several shortcuts, you can select several files and create a common folder name once (for a multiple selection, the other property fields become inactive). In the absence of a name for a shortcut (unique for each file), no shortcut is created for the file. Name To give a name to the shortcut. This name is necessary in order for a shortcut to be created. You can use the #title macro to insert the name of your program, defined in the Wizard Texts tab. Command line options Optional: for defining specific commands to be sent to the file when its shortcut is activated. E.g. /P Icon index If a program contains several icons, this number allows you to choose which one will be displayed. This is the index of the icon in the resources of the executable file. Icon file If your file does not contain internal icons, you can associate a .ico file with the shortcut. This .ico file must be installed with your application files. Window Allows you to specify the initial show state of the application window. All Users (NT/2000/XP) Select this option if you want the icons to be accessible by all the users (only with Windows NT, 2000 or XP). Desktop Shortcut

During installation, a shortcut can be automatically created on the users desktop. As in the Start menu, you have to specify a name for your shortcut in order for it to be created. You can use the #title macro to insert the name of your program, defined in the Wizard Texts tab. The field "Command line options" is optional and serves to add parameters to the shortcut. You must only enter the command line options, not the filename. Icon file: If your file does not contain internal icons, you can associate a .ico file with the shortcut. This .ico file must be installed with your application files. Window: Allows you to specify the initial show state of the application window. All Users (NT/2000/XP) : Select this option if you want the icons to be accessible by all the users (only with Windows NT, 2000 or XP).

View/Run

This group of options allows your install program to display or run a file during or after the installation process. When you choose to "View" a file, the install program will launch the program associated with the extension of your file. When you choose to "Run" a file, the install program will launch your file. You can View or Run a file at different times during the installation process: Before the end page The file will be displayed / run at the end of the Progress page before the End page is displayed. While end page is displayed The file will be displayed / run just after the End page is displayed. When installer exits The file will be displayed / run just after the user closes your installer. View button on End page This option lets the user choose to view / run the file or not, via a "View file" button or a "Launch file" check box in the End page. You can change the text of these buttons in the Miscellaneous Texts page of the Wizard Texts tab. Once you've chosen to View or Run a file, you can select other options: Wait for end If this option is selected, the installer will wait for your program to return before continuing. This option is available only if you Run your file. Delete file after program completed This option is used in conjunction with the Wait For End option. The program file will be deleted when it returns. Prompt User The install program will ask the users if they want to view / run the file. You can change the text of this message in the Miscellaneous Texts page of the Wizard Texts tab. View / Run only after reboot If you have chosen to display or run the file in the Progress page or in the End page, you can select this option so that your file is displayed or run only after the machine restarts (if the user's machine needs to be rebooted after the installation process). If you have chosen to display or run the file after the installer exits, the file will be always displayed or run after the machine restarts.

Windows

These options allow you to choose a specific site for some of your files. Install directory Places the file or files in the given directory. Select "Destination directory" if you want your file to be installed to the normal destination directory of the install program. Destination directory It's the normal destination directory of the install program, the one you define in the Options tab and that the user can modify in the Directory screen of the install program (if authorized). The directory structure of the source file is re-created identical to the original in the destination directory. Windows directory (1) Directory where is installed Windows. System directory (1) System directory where are installed shared system files (DLLs, screen savers, control panel applets, etc.). If you install a DLL file to this directory, its "Do not install if higher version already installed" option is automatically selected, as well as its "Increase DLL usage count" option. Fonts directory (1) Directory which contains the fonts. When you install a file to this directory, the install program automatically registers the new font. Desktop directory (1) Installs the file to the user's desktop. Desktop directory (all users) (1) Installs the file to the desktop of all the user accounts (Windows NT/2000/XP only). Temporary directory (1) Installs the file to the Windows temporary directory. My Documents directory Installs the file to the My Documents directory. The directory structure of the source file is re-created identical to the original in the My Documents directory. Application Data directory Installs the file to the Application Data directory. The directory structure of the source file is re-created identical to the original in the Application Data directory. Other (1) If this option is selected, you have to enter another install directory for your file in the edit box below the Install Directory combo box. You can click the ">" button to insert macros that will be replaced by the full pathname of the normal installation directory or a System directory. Refer to the Options tab for more info about these macros. (1) *Important* if you choose another destination than "Destination directory", "My Documents directory" or "Application Data directory", the sub-folder of the source file is ignored and will not appear in the destination filename. If you want to install a file to a sub-directory of one of the system directories above, choose "Other" and enter the macro for the system directory followed by the name of the sub-directory, e.g. #Windows#\MyCompany. (2) If you install files to the Windows or System directories on a Windows NT/2000/XP machine, your user will need Administrator privileges to install them. Options Install as the current screen saver For a file of type .scr. The settings of Windows are modified and the file becomes the current screen saver by default. It is better to install screen savers in the Windows system directory. They are then listed by default when the user selects "Display properties" from the Control Panel. Register OCX control, DLL, .REG file, .TLB file - calls the DllRegisterServer function of a DLL or an OCX control - calls regsvr32 to register a .REG file - calls regtlib to register a .TLB file Note: when you select this option and the file cannot be registered by Install Creator, a message will be displayed. Increment DLL usage count Adds 1 to the dll usage counter of this DLL. This counter is used to know how many applications use the DLL. When the uninstaller uninstalls the DLL, it decrements the counter and will uninstall the DLL if the counter is equal to 0, i.e. if the DLL is no longer used by any application. Install only with the following versions of Windows

Lets you unselect the Windows platforms you do not want your file to be installed to. - If you "ME+" is checked, then the file will be installed to Windows Me and any newer version of Windows 9x (if any). - If you "XP+" is checked, then the file will be installed to Windows XP and any newer version of Windows NT. Misc

Do not install this file Gives you the possibility to install a shortcut to a file without having to install the actual file. Especially useful for installations from a CDROM. Also allows you not to install a file on a specific version, or to exclude temporary files from the build process. Do not uninstall this file Specify a file that does not have to be uninstalled by the uninstall program. Particularly useful for the distribution of a program that will require to memorize certain aspects of the original installation for future updates. Do not install, but create directory Gives you the possibility to create an empty directory. The file is not included in the install program. Keep external If this option is selected, the file won't be integrated in the install program and will remain external. You will have to distribute the file with your install program. This option is very useful for CD-ROM installations. Download During the build process, the file will be compressed to a .bin file to the local download directory specified in the Options tab. During the installation process, the install program will download this file from the download directory. Note: the file won't be downloaded its installation is not required, e.g. if it's a system file and a higher version is already installed. Cannot cancel installation after this file has been installed This option prevents the user to cancel the installation if an important file has been installed and the installation must be completed. Do not start installation or uninstallation if file in use Prevents the installation / uninstallation process to start if a file is opened. It's recommended to select this option for your main program file. Do not install if ... A file with the same name is already installed The file won't be installed if a file with the same name is already installed. Do not install if ... A higher version of the file is already installed The install program will compare the internal File Version number of the file already installed with the one of the file to install and won't install it if the installed version has a higher number. Use this option for shared system files you install to the System directory.

This tab allows you to modify and personalize texts displayed during the installation.

Page Selects one of the pages of the installation program so that you can edit the text. Each page corresponds to one of the stages of installation that will be viewed by your users.

You can modify the display order of the first 4 pages (Presentation, Information, Choose the version to install, License) in your install program. Select a page and click the Up / Down arrow buttons to move it in the list. Product name Replaces #title by the name of your product in all the texts. It is therefore not necessary to replace every #title in the installation Wizard texts. Options - Hidden : if selected, the page won't be displayed. Note: for some pages this option is not enabled, as either the page is never displayed or it is displayed automatically given the settings of your install program. E.g. the License page is always displayed if you enter a license text and never displayed if there is no license text, the Registration pages are always displayed if your version is protected, etc. The End page can be hidden, but will be automatically displayed if an error occurs. - Title in caption : this option allows you to display the title of the current page in the window caption of your install program. The effect of this option depends on the way your window is displayed (small or full screen mode, with or without caption) Buttons - Preview : shows how the current page will be displayed in your install program. - Edit: allows you to modify the dialog boxes of your install program with the Dialog Box Editor.

Editing window

To modify the text: Double click (or use right click and the Edit function from the pop-up menu) on the line of text that you wish to modify. To restore the original text: Select the line to restore, with a right click of the mouse and in the pop-up menu, select the "Default" option and choose the language in the sub-menu. Note: the list of languages is built from the list of text files in the Templ sub-directory of Install Creator. Tips: - Each time you use the macro characters #title, the name of your product will be inserted in its place. - The macro \n invokes a new paragraph. - %s is replaced by a string which depends on the message: for example the installation directory, the current file, an error message, etc. - %d is replaced by a number (e.g. the free disk size in Mb) - you can use the following tags to modify parts of the text: <b>bold</b> <i>italic</i> <u>underline</u> <s>strikeout</u> <black>black</black> <white>white</ white > <red>red</red> <green>green</green> <blue>blue</blue> <fontsize=nn>text</font>, nn = new font size <link=url>text</blue>, e.g. <link=http://www.clickteam.com>Clickteam Web Site</link> Note: Rich Edit 2.0 must be installed on the user's machine so that the links work. They may not work on some Windows 95 and NT 4.0 machines on which Internet Explorer 4 is not installed. The other Windows platforms (98/Me/2000/XP) have Rich Edit 2.0 or above installed. - You can save your texts for future applications by using the "Export Wizard Texts" function in the File menu. To use it again in the future simply select Import Wizard Texts. - Deleting some texts may affect the behavior of the install program: - Information page, text #3: if this text is empty, the Information page won't be displayed. - License page, text #4: if this text is empty, the License page won't be displayed. - Progress page, text "File :" : if this text is empty, the name of the installed files is not displayed during the installation. - End page, last text: if this text is not empty, the install program will display a message asking the user to restart Windows. Note: this message is automatically displayed if a file cannot be properly installed before the machine is restarted. - Miscellaneous text page, message "The destination directory doesn't exist. Do you want it to be created?": if this message is empty, it will not be displayed and the directory will be automatically created. - Miscellaneous text page, message "One or more files are write-protected. Do you want to overwrite them anyway?": if this message is empty, it will not be displayed and the installation will continue. - Miscellaneous text page, message "%s\n\nThis file exists and is a more recent version than the file to install.\n\n etc.": if this message is empty, it will not be displayed and the installed version of the file won't be overwritten by the old version. About Language Templates... You will be able to find many language templates available on our web site at http://www.clickteam.com. They can be found in the Install Creator Pro Download section of our web site. We also welcome contributions of new language templates from our users if your language is not available there. You can use the Export Text Option in the File menu to export these language templates.

Dialog Box Editor

A major feature of Install Creator Pro is the ability to customize the dialog boxes of your install programs. From the main interface, select the Wizard Texts tab and click the Edit button to open the Dialog Box editor. This editor is composed of 2 separate windows: The Wizard window This window is identical to the dialog box of your install program. In this window you can move, resize the controls, change their properties and resize the left and top panes. The Options window This window allows you to select the page that will be displayed in the Wizard window, and to setup the properties of the different panes. Once you have customized the dialog boxes, you can save them to disk in a template file with the Export Wizard Template command of the File menu. You will then be able, later, to reimport them into another installer project with the Import Wizard Template option. Note: when you save a Dialog Box Template, you should save it to the Templ sub-directory of Install Creator Pro, as well as the bitmaps it uses, if any, so that the New wizard of Install Creator Pro can display them in the Wizard Template page

This window is composed of 4 panes: - the left pane, which can contain a bitmap - the top pane, which contains 2 static text controls and a bitmap - the main pane, which contains the user controls of the current page of the install program wizard - the bottom pane, whose size is fixed, which contains the buttons that allow the user to navigate through the different Wizard pages In this window, you can: Modify the size of the left and top panes Click the vertical hatched bar and drag it to resize the left pane, and/or click the horizontal bar and drag it to resize the top pane. Modify the size of the main window The Wizard window is resizable. When you resize the main window, the controls are automatically resized. Move and resize the controls Click a control to select it. You can then either click the hatched border of the selection and drag it to resize the control, or click anywhere in the control and drag it to move it. You can also use the arrow keys to move the selected control, and the same plus the SHIFT key to resize it. You can select several controls with the SHIFT and CTRL keys, or by clicking in an empty area and surrounding the controls to select with a selection box. Note: Click + SHIFT toggles the selection state of a control. Click + CTRL adds the control to the selection. Edit the properties of a control

Double-click on a control will open the Properties dialog box. You can then choose various options to customize the appearance of the control. These properties are: - Visible: uncheck this option if you want to hide a control. - Disabled: check this option if you want a control to be disabled. - Border, Client Edge, Static Edge: select these options if you want to change the border of a control. - Multi-line : changes an edit box to multi-line mode. If unchecked, the edit box can contain a single line of text. - Left text: applied to check boxes and radio buttons, this option displays the text to the left of the check box. - Smooth: uses a different display style for the Progress Bar controls. - Vertical: displays the progress bar vertically in a Progress Bar control. - Horizontal alignment: changes the horizontal alignment of the text in the control.

Note: you cannot edit the properties of several controls at the same time, i.e. only one control must be selected to open the Properties dialog box. Use the popup menu to arrange controls together Right click a selected control to display the popup menu:

Align... This sub-menu allows you to align the selected controls together. Several controls must be selected. The controls are aligned with the master control, the one with blue handles in its selection border. The master control is usually the last selected. Click + CTRL on a selected control will make it master control. Make Same... This sub-menu allows you to make identical the size of all the selected controls. The controls are resized to the size of the master control. Center in Dialog This sub-menu allows you to center a control, or a group of controls, in the dialog box. Properties Opens the Properties dialog box (single selection only).

Dialog Box Editor - Options

This window allows you to select the page to display in the Wizard window and to change the properties of the selected page(s). Selecting a page

Click the page in the list on the left of the dialog box. This page will be displayed in the Wizard text page and its properties will be displayed in the tabs on the right of the dialog box. Use the SHIFT key to select several pages in order to give them identical properties. If several pages are selected, only the common controls will be displayed in the Wizard window. Page properties You can modify the page properties in the tabs on the right of the page list. Note 1: these tabs contain color selectors that allow you to modify the colors of the different parts of the Wizard window. In the color selectors, you can choose either the Default color, or a custom color. If you select the Default color, the install program will use the default system color defined by the user in the Control Panel / Display tab. Note 2: the bottom pane is shared by all the pages. If you modify a control in this pane, the modification will be done in all the pages of the Wizard. Global Options tab

This tab contains properties shared by all the pages: Font Select the font you want to use in the dialog boxes of your install program. Enable XP Themes Check this option if you want you installer to use the visual theme selected by the user under Windows XP, or uncheck it to give your install program a classic Windows style. Note: if this option is selected, you won't be able to modify the text color of the radio buttons and check boxes in your installer. Bottom / Background color Allows you to modify the background color of the bottom pane. Note: you cannot change the background color of the buttons. Bottom / Separator Displays a separator between the bottom pane and the main / left panes. Main Pane tab

This tab allows you to modify the background and text colors of the main pane in the Wizard tab, as well as the background color of the edit controls. Note 1: you cannot modify the text color of the check boxes and radio buttons if the "Enable XP Themes" option is selected in the Global Options tab. Note 2: you cannot modify the text and background colors of the push buttons. Left Column tab

This page allows you to choose the background color and a bitmap to display in the left pane. The bitmap file must be in BMP format. Check the Center box if you want the bitmap to be centered in the pane, and/or the Border box if you want a border to be drawn around the bitmap. Check the Separator box to display a separator between the left pane and the main pane. Top Row tab

This page allows you to choose the background & text colors, and a bitmap to display in the top pane. The bitmap file must be in BMP format. Check the Center box if you want the bitmap to be centered vertically in the pane, uncheck the Right box if you want the bitmap to be positioned on the left side of the pane, and/or the Border box if you want a border to be drawn around the bitmap. Window tab
This tab allows you to customize the appearance of the Installation Wizard. Window

No Window / Small / Normal The small window will appear over any other active windows. The normal window will occupy the whole screen. If the "Quiet Install" option is selected, your installer will run silently. This option cannot be used if you protect your install program with registration codes. Note: this feature is not available in the demo version of Install Creator Pro. In this mode, if the machine needs to be restarted after the install process, then by default the "You need to restart Windows..." message box is not displayed. Select the "Display Restart Windows dialog box" option if you want this message to be displayed. Options (Normal mode only) Maximized : your window will be maximized at start. Caption : your window will have a title bar. Icon Allows you to select your own icon for your install program. You must select a .ico file which contains the following resolutions: 48 x 48, 256 colors 32 x 32, 256 colors 32 x 32, 16 colors 16 x 16, 256 colors 16 x 16, 16 colors If you do not want to use your own icon, just keep this box empty. Wizard Template

If your install program dialog boxes contain a unique Left (resp. Top) bitmap, you can change this bitmap in the Left (resp. Top) bitmap box. If your install program dialog boxes contain several, different Left / Top bitmaps, you have to edit your dialog boxes with the Dialog Box Editor to change them. You can open the Dialog Box Editor with the Edit button. Background tab

Color Allows you to select the background colors in normal window mode, as well as the colors of the background text and its shadow. Check the "->" box if you want a gradient background rather than a plain color. Text Allows you to display a text in the background. You can choose the font of this text and align it to the right of the window. To display several lines of text, use the macro \n. Bitmap tab

Allows you to display a bitmap in the background of the window (in normal window mode). You can specify a different bitmap for several screen resolutions and your install program will choose the bitmap with the nearest resolution from the current screen resolution. Click the Add button to add a bitmap. Select a BMP file and then select the resolution for which you want the bitmap to be displayed. Add other bitmaps if you want to display a different bitmap in several screen resolutions. Options Stretch : the image will be resized to the size of the screen. Pattern : the image will be reproduced as a mosaic (tiled) in the background. Alignment : If the image is not stretched or tiled, select the alignment options to align it with the borders of the window, or to center it.

Wizard Options tab

This tab allows you to select how your program is installed on the user's machine. Installation directory

Allows you to choose the default directory to install your files. The user will also be given the option to choose a different directory. Default directory Sets the default directory on the user's hard disk. If you wish to install your program in a system directory where the name may be different on other machines, you can use the following macros: #Windows# = places the files in the Windows directory #System# = places the files in the Windows\System directory #Program Files# = places the files in the Program Files directory #Common Files# = places the files in the Common Files directory #MyDocuments# = places the files in the My Documents directory #AppData# = places the files in the Application Data directory #TempDir# = places the files in the Windows temporary directory #LocalAppData# = places the files in the Local Settings / Application Data directory (typically C:\Windows\Application Data under Windows 9x, C:\Windows\Profiles\User_Name\Local Settings\Application Data under Windows NT, or C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name\Local Settings\Application Data under Windows 2000/XP). #AllUsersAppData# = places the files in the Application Data directory common to all users (typically C:\Windows\Application Data under Windows 9x, C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users\Application Data under Windows NT, or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data under Windows 2000/XP). #UserDir# = places the files in the current user directory (typically C:\Windows under Windows 9x, C:\Windows\Profiles\User_Name under Windows NT, or C:\Documents and Settings\User_Name under Windows NT/2000/XP). #AllUsersDir# = places the files in the directory common to all users (typically C:\Windows under Windows 9x, C:\Windows\Profiles\All Users under Windows NT, or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users under Windows NT/2000/XP). Click on the button marked ' > ' to choose one of these macros. Add a directory separator ("\") between the macro and any sub-folder name. E.g. #Program Files#\Install Creator Pro. You can also use the #title macro to insert the name of your program, defined in the Wizard Texts tab. Read-only Forbids the modification of the destination directory by the user. Minimimum checking If you uncheck the Minimum Checking option, then when the installation process is about to start, your install program will try to determine the minimum size required to install program. This takes into account the size of any already installed file. This operation can take some time on certain machines if you install thousands of files. If you check the Minimum Checking option, your install program won't verify the size of the installed files and will always assume the required free disk space to install your program is equal to the sum of the sizes of your files. Obtain the directory from the Registry Uses information contained in the Registry to choose the installation directory. For example: Root key=HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Key=txtfile\shell\open\command This would return the value: "C:\windows\notepad.exe %1", your installation program would suppress parameters and the file name and retain only its path. In this case it would be "C:\windows" Update key Writes the name of the installation directory in the indicated key of the Registry. This allows future updates and re-installations to find the directory. Obtain the directory from an INI file

Uses information contained in an INI File located in the Windows directory. Update entry Writes the name of the installation directory in the indicated INI file. This allows future updates and re-installations to find the directory.

Do not start the installer if ...

... /A is passed to the command line and a key exists in the registry This option is useful for CD-ROM installations. More info... Usually when your application's install program is on a CD-ROM, you would like this install program to automatically start when the CD-ROM is inserted in the user's CD-ROM drive. To do this, you create an autorun.inf file in the root directory of your CD-ROM. The content of this autorun.inf file is something like: [Autorun] OPEN=INSTALL.EXE ICON=MYPROGRAM.ICO However if the user has already installed your program, you will probably want your install program not to automatically start again each time the CD-ROM is inserted in the CD-ROM drive. To do so, just create a key in the registry, e.g. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\YourCompany\YourProduct\Installed, either from within your application or with the install program itself (use the Install Info tab to write a key to the registry), enter this key in the "/A is passed to the command line and a key exists in the registry" edit box and modify your autorun.inf file like this: [Autorun] OPEN=INSTALL.EXE /A ICON=MYPROGRAM.ICO When the CD-ROM will be inserted in the drive, the install program will start and test if the registry key exists. If so, it will exit immediately. ... the following file is not installed If your application needs a file to be installed on the user's machine before it's installed, just enter the name of this file here. You can insert macros with the '>' button to insert system pathnames into your pathname. If the install program does not find the specified file, it will display a message. This message can be modified in the Wizard Texts tab, Miscellaneous Texts page. Download directories

The directories above are used if you select the Download option for one or more files of your application in the Misc tab of the File Options. The Local directory will be used by Install Creator Pro to store compressed, downloadable files for your install program. These files have the .bin extension. When the Build process starts, Install Creator Pro deletes all the .bin files from this directory and recreates .bin files for the files that have the Download option. The Internet URL is the URL of a directory on your server. Your install program will download the .bin files from this directory. When the Build process is completed, you will have to copy all the .bin files from the Local directory to the directory on your server. Important Note: the Download option does not work if you build your install program to a floppy disk or a removable drive, or if your specify a Maximum File Size in the Build tab.

Install Info tab

The Install Info tab is a very useful tool if you wish to modify certain parameters of Windows (INI files, Windows registry entries), or any file. To add or modify each type of entry, use the buttons Add, Edit, and Remove: Add: To add a new entry. Edit: To modify an entry. Remove: To remove an entry. How to write a value to an INI file...

Writing a value in one or more INI files you specify is very simple. Clicking the Add or Edit buttons opens the following dialog box:

Enter the name of the INI file, the section, entry and string. Install Creator Pro looks for the .INI file in the list of files to install. If it doesn't find it, it assumes the file is in the Windows directory and creates it if it does not exist. If the option "Do not overwrite existing entry" is selected, the program will not change the existing entry. Writing values to the Windows Registry...

Writing values to the Windows Registry is as simple as writing to an INI file. With this in mind, be very careful when modifying values since writing incorrect values to the registry could cause system troubles. Clicking the Add or Edit buttons opens the following dialog box:

How to use it? Choose the Root key among the four available ones. Specify the name of the Key, i.e. the access path (Control Panel\desktop\ for example).

Specify the name of the Subkey (Wallpaper for example). Lastly, enter the String value (c:\windows\image.bmp for example). By default Install Creator Pro writes strings. If you need to write a numeric value, check the DWORD value option. If the option "Do not overwrite existing entry" is selected, the program will not change the existing entry. Creating the Registry Keys required to associate a file extension with your program... Install Creator Pro makes this task easy. Click the Add Ext button:

Enter the file extension you want to associate with your program, e.g. .xxx. Specify the type name, e.g. XXXFile. Specify the path of your program, when it's installed on the user's machine. You can insert macros wit the '>' button. E.g. the #InstallDir# macro will be replaced by the installation directory chosen by the user. Specify the command line options, i.e. the parameters that will be passed to your program when the user will double-click a .xxx file. "%1" is replaced by the name of the .xxx file and is mandatory. Add any other parameter, if necessary. If you wish to associate an icon with the .xxx files, specify the path of the file that contains the icon and the index of the icon in this file. If you use a .ico file, the icon index must be 0. If you use an executable file, use the index of the icon in the resources of the file (0 for the first icon, 1 for the second icon, etc.). When you're done, click the OK button. Install Creator Pro will then display the list of keys it will add to the "Write key(s) into registry" list box. If you click OK again, these keys will be added. You can remove them if you no longer want to associate your program with this extension. Note: unlike the other keys you add with the Add button, these keys are automatically added to the keys to remove by the Uninstall program, in the Uninstaller tab. Writing Strings to a file...

Writing a String value to any file is as easy as writing a value to an INI file or the Windows Registry...Clicking the Add or Edit buttons opens the following dialog box:

How to use it? Select the Filename to write the information to. This file should be in the installation directory. Choose either Numerical, String or Add to the End for the String offset. If you select "Numerical", enter a numeric value. The string will be written at this address in the file. If you select "String", enter a string that the installer will search in the file. The installer will write the "string to write" after the first occurrence of the search string in the file. The search string can contain several sub-strings, separated by a coma. Each sub-string can be a string or an hexadecimal value. E.g. 0x41, 0x42, "test", 0x43, 0x44 (identical to "ABtestCD"). The "Check" button allows you to verify if the search string exists in the specified file. If you select "Add to the end of file", the string will be added to the end of file. If the "Insert End of Line" character" option is selected, an End of Line character will be inserted before the string if the last character of the file is not already an End of Line character. Specify the text of the String to write. Note: the string overwrites the content of the file, i.e. it's not "inserted" at the given position.

Using the Macro's... There are a couple very useful Macro's that you can use in the dialogs "Write string to..." displayed when you click the Add buttons in the Install Info page. These macros (available using the ">" button), are the following: #Windows# = Windows directory #System# = System directory #Program Files# = Program Files directory #InstallDir# = Installation directory #SourceDir# = Source directory (where is the install program) #UserName# = User name #UserCompany# = User's company #UserEmail# = User's e-mail address (if included in the registration code) #UserInfo# = User's info (if included in the registration code) #UserRegCode# = User's registration code #UserSerialNumber# = User serial number #Date# = current date (writes the following number: year * 10000 + month * 100 + day)

Uninstaller tab
The un-installation program will allow your users to remove your application from their hard disk by deleting all installed files as well as all shortcuts created during the installation.

Uninstaller filename: Specify the name of the un-installation file. By default this name is uninstal.exe. You can give it another name if you wish. If no name is present in this field, no un-installation program will be created. Uninstaller icon: Allows you to select your own icon for your uninstall program. You must select a .ico file which contains the following resolutions: 48 x 48, 256 colors 32 x 32, 256 colors 32 x 32, 16 colors 16 x 16, 256 colors 16 x 16, 16 colors If you do not want to use your own icon, just keep this box empty. Start Menu

Icon folder Indicates in which directory of the Start \ Programs menu the un-installation icon will be placed. Shortcut name Gives a name to the un-installation icon in the Start \ Programs menu. The icon name and folder name are optional. If the name is left empty, the shortcut of the un-installation program will not be installed in the Start \ Programs directory and the uninstaller will be visible only in the Control Panel - Add / Remove Software page. All users (NT/2000/XP) Check this option if you want the icon to be created in the Start \ Programs menu of all user accounts on the user's machine. Options

Add entry in Control Panel Adds an entry for the uninstall program in the Control Panel - Add / Remove Programs section. Add uninstall info to existing uninstaller only If selected, the install program will add the uninstall info to the uninstall program that is already installed in the destination directory. If there is no uninstall program already installed, the install program does not create it. Note: the uninstall program must have been created with an installer created with Install Creator Pro or Install Creator. It does not work if the uninstaller has been created with Install Maker Pro or Install Maker. Launch file before uninstallation Allows you to run a program before the uninstallation process. Select an executable file installed with your application. Check the "Wait for end" option if you want the uninstall program to wait for your program to return before continuing the installation. View URL after uninstallation Displays an URL in the default browser when the uninstallation is complete.

Additional files to remove

Allows you to specify files to uninstall even if they haven't been installed by the install program. Syntax: filename1;filename2;filename3;etc. filename can be : - *.* => removes all the files from the installation directory and its sub-directories - *.ext => removes all the files with a .ext extension from the installation directory and its sub-directories, e.g. *.tmp Warning: be very careful when using this option: the uninstall program will search for these files in all the sub-directories of the destination directory, and will destroy all the files that match the indicated filenames. If the user installs other programs in the same directory, some files of these programs could be deleted too, so it is strongly recommended that you delete only files with a custom extension used only by your program, or with a .tmp extension. Note: this feature does not work if the user installs the program in a system directory like Windows, Windows\System, Windows\Desktop, Windows\Fonts, Program Files, or a drive root directory, in order to avoid important files to be removed from the user's machine. Registry keys to remove

If your application has modified the content of the Registry, we recommend you to use this option to allow removal of the appropriate keys added during installation. Warning : the registry contains crucial information for the correct functioning of Windows. It is very easy to upset the system by inadvertently modifying some main keys. Any work in the registry should therefore only be attempted by competent users. You should not attempt to use this section of the uninstaller if you are not sure what you are doing! Examples: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InstallCreatorPro.Settings This line will destroy the key InstallCreatorPro.Settings as well as all its child keys. If you need to destroy only a value and not a whole key, separate the value name from the key name with a double '\' character. Example: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ClickTeam\Install Creator Pro\Settings\\Window This line will remove the value Window from the list of values contained in the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ClickTeam\Install Creator Pro\Settings. Advice : use the program REGEDIT that can be found in the Windows\System directory of your computer. This program allows you to list the contents of the registry and to verify that all the relative keys to your program have disappeared. Uninstallation Texts

To edit the different texts of the un-installation program. Principles of editing are identical to those used to edit the other texts within the installation program.

Build tab

Maximum File Size Enter a size in Kb. Install Creator Pro will split your install program into several files if its size is greater than the maximum size. E.g. this option allows you create multiple floppy disk installations (for a 1.4 Mb floppy disk, enter 1423 as maximum size). Install Creator Pro will create a .EXE file and then, if necessary, a .D01 file, a .D02 file, etc.. Compression Use this option to choose the method used to compress your files. In Fast mode, the compression is less efficient, but the duration of the building process is divided by 2 or 3. Useful for the tests or if you do not need a very good compression. In Normal mode (default), the compression is slower but better. In Maximum mode, the compression method is very aggressive but very slow and depends on the number of files. Note: if your install program installs several versions, the Maximum compression mode is identical to the Normal compression mode. Build This function constructs an executable file for your installation program, from all the settings defined beforehand. By default Install Creator Pro suggests a file name of install.exe. You may choose an alternative. Save Log Saves the content of the build result list to a text file.

Results display window In the course of the construction of the file, this window lists the files during compression. At the end of construction, a complete review shows you the size of the files, the number of compressed files, their total original size and the average compression rate (ratio). Note: Install Creator may display warning messages at the beginning of the list, if it detects possible errors, for example when you specify different folders for different files in the Start menu.

Command Line Options of Install Creator Pro The command line of Install Creator Pro is extremely simple and only has 2 switches: /B for build icp /b path_of_file\your_file.iip You therefore have to produce your project file before launching the Install Creator Pro command line order. Once launched, Install Creator Pro will automatically construct the project and will exit immediately at the end of construction. This is an ideal way to incorporate the manufacture of the installer in your other projects (see the page How to...) /R for Registration Tool With this option, the registration tool is automatically opened when you open Install Creator Pro. Command Line Options for the install programs created by Install Creator Pro /A This option is used in conjunction with the "Do not start if a registry key is present" option. See the Options tab for more information. /F With this option the controls (DLL, OCX, etc.) are registered even if they are not replaced by the install program. This allows you to fix possible installation problems, e.g. if a more recent version of a control is installed on the user machine and has not been registered for any reason. /N This option forces the install program to display a window even if it's a silent installer.

How to make a multi-language installation program...

If you would like to create an English, French, and German installation program at the same time Install Creator Pro simplifies the task! Follow the guide... 1. Prepare your data... Compile your program and prepare the directories containing the files to be installed for each language. For example: \Project\Install\English for the English version \Project\Install\French for the French version \Project\Install\German for the German version 2. Create the default version... The first version we will create is the English version: Launch Install Creator Pro as usual. In our example we will not use the Wizard so click on cancel to close it if it is open. Double-click the first line in the Source Directories list, click the "..." button and select the directory which contains the English files of your product. If your version of Install Creator Pro is not the English version, set the English text by choosing the option Files / Import Wizard Texts to import texts then the file English.txt. All the texts of the installer are now in English. Proceed as usual in creating a complete version: select the various properties for each one, enter the name of your software etc. Please refer to the remainder of this documentation for more information on the procedure. You might need to check the validity of your installer and the data installed. 3. Add the French and German versions... Once you are satisfied with the English version, click the Edit button above the tabs in the main window. This will open the Versions dialog box. Click the Default entry in the list and rename it to English. And then click the New button above the list, enter French (or Franais), and re-click the New button and enter German (or Deutsch). Click OK to close the dialog box. Install Creator Pro has automatically created 2 new versions of the installation of your product. It has copied all the information that you entered for the preceding version: directories, installation text, names, registry keys, etc. To finish the French and German versions you only need to enter different information. This very powerful function of Install Creator Pro enables you to save a significant amount of time creating other versions. Select French in the Version combo box Modify the directory in the Source Directories, and modify the options of the files, if they are different from the one of the English version Import the French texts using the menu: File / Import Wizard Texts and then select the file French.txt. Possibly modify the title of the software, the names of icons etc. Select German in the Version combo box and do the same changes Build your install program 4. Test the installation... While launching the file you created you will notice that: Install Creator Pro automatically generated a list of choices The installation file is usually much smaller than the size of your software multiplied by 3. Install Creator Pro uses an engine of differentiation between versions, and stores only non-redundant information in the installation program. Note: You can store up to 16 different versions in one installer.

How to create a Demo / Registered Version install program...

1. Create two versions of your application (a demo version and a full version). Save all the files for each version to their own directory. 2. Run Install Creator Pro and cancel the wizard. 3. Double-click the first line in the Source Directories list, click the "..." button and select the directory of the files of your demo. Configure all the settings as you would normally for an
install.

4. Now click the Edit button to the far right of Version. This will open the Versions dialog box. Click the Default entry in the list and rename it to Demo. And then click the New button
above the list and enter Registered Version. Select Registered Version in the list and enter a Product Code (between 8 and 24 characters). See the different versions for more information. Click OK to close the dialog box. Install Creator Pro has automatically created a new version. It has copied all the information that you entered for the preceding version: directories, installation texts, names, registry keys, etc. Now click the directory in the Source Directories list and replace the directory name of the demo files by the directory name of the registered version. Configure all the settings as you would normally. Now open the Registration Tool, create a new entry for your product with the same Product Code you entered in the Versions dialog box. And then select the Users tab, creates a new user and copy its registration code to the clipboard. Build your install program and test it. When you choose "Registered Version", a Registration screen will appear. If the registration code is still in the clipboard, it will be automatically displayed. Otherwise, you will have to enter it, either manually if it's a short code, or with a copy/paste, or by drag & drop of a text file containing the code, or with the Browse button. When a user runs your demo and decides to register the product, you will now be able to use the registration tool to create a registration code for him/her. Top When I try to import an icon, Install Creator reports this icon is invalid. Why? An icon file is a group of images. Windows chooses between these images the one that fits the best given the display settings. For the icons of the installer and uninstaller, Install Creator only supports icons that contain at least 5 images with the following resolutions: 48x48 - 256 colors, 32x32 - 256 colors, 32x32 - 16 colors, 16x16 - 256 colors, 16x16 - 16 colors.
