TPS CHANGES APPROVED

Technology Council approved the TPS changes for the following projects (see changes below). Please send any comments to standards.section@ashrae.org.

BACKGROUND ON TPS CHANGES cont.

a. because of the diversity of sources and contaminants in indoor air and the range of susceptibility in the population; b. because of the many other factors that may affect occupant perception and acceptance of IAQ, such as air temperature, humidity, noise, lighting, and psychological stress; c. if the ambient air is unacceptable, and this air is brought into the building without first being cleaned (cleaning of ambient outdoor air is not required by this standard); d. if the system(s) are not operated and maintained as designed; or e. when high-polluting events occur. 2.3 This standard does not address unvented combustion space heaters.

SPC191, Standard for the Efficient Use of Water in

Building, Site and Mechanical Systems

BACKGROUND ON TPS CHANGES SSPC 62.2, Ventilation and Acceptable Indoor Air
Quality in Low-Rise Residential Buildings 1. PURPOSE This standard defines the roles of and minimum requirements for mechanical and natural ventilation systems and the building envelope intended to provide acceptable indoor air quality (IAQ) in low-rise residential buildings. 2. SCOPE This standard applies to spaces intended for human occupancy within single-family houses and multifamily structures of three stories or fewer above grade, including manufactured and modular houses. This standard does not apply to transient housing such as hotels, motels, nursing homes, dormitories, or jails.

SSPC 90.2, Energy Efficient Design of Low-Rise

Residential Buildings 1.1 Purpose: To establish the minimum design, and construction requirements for energy efficient residential buildings. 1.2 Scope This standard provides the minimum design and construction requirements for new residential buildings and their systems and new portions of existing residential buildings and their systems that use electricity and/or fossil fuel.

1.2.1 Buildings and portions of buildings covered: a) single-family houses (single family detached, duplexes 2.1 This standard considers chemical, physical, and bioand townhomes), logical contaminants that can affect air quality. Thermal b) multi-family structures of three stories or fewer above comfort requirements are not included in this standard (see grade, and ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 55-2004, Thermal Environmental c) outbuildings and pool houses located on the same priConditions for Human Occupancy). vate property of a single family house. 2.2 While acceptable IAQ is the goal of this standard, it will not necessarily be achieved even if all requirements are met

1.2.2 Systems covered: a) building envelope, b) HVAC and mechanical systems, c) service hot water systems, d) major appliances, e) lighting systems, f) snow and ice melt systems, and g) pools and spas.

BACKGROUND ON TPS CHANGES cont.

b. Address water use through the concept of best practices for water conservation and efficiency measures efficiency through water conservation measures implemented during design and construction of residential, commercial, institutional and industrial projects. 2.2 The provisions of this standard do not apply to: a. Storm or building waste water management, except as a means of reducing potable water use. b. Industrial process systems.

1.2.3 Exemptions: This standard does not apply to: a) specific procedures for the operation, maintenance, and use of residential buildings, STANDARDS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD b) transient housing, such as hotels, motels, nursing homes, jails, and barracks, Each year the Society recognizes the outstanding efforts of c) manufactured housing, and a single volunteer in the area of standards development. d) outbuildings and pool houses not covered by 1.2.1c. The Standards Achievement Award recognizes excellence in volunteer service and serves to heighten general membership awareness of, and interest in, standards activities. 1.2.4 Health, safety and welfare: This standard shall not be used to abridge any safety, The award is open to ASHRAE members who have demonhealth, or environmental requirements. strated outstanding achievement in the ASHRAE standards development process based on criteria presented in Appendix B of the Standards Committee Reference Manual, SPC191, Standard for the Efficient Use of Water in which can be found on the ASHRAE website at: Building, Site and Mechanical Systems http://www.ashrae.org/standards-forms-procedures. 1. PURPOSE: The purpose of this standard is to provide baseline requirements for the design of buildings, site, and mechanical systems that minimize the volume of water required to operate HVAC systems, plumbing systems, and irrigation systems. 2. SCOPE: 2.1 This standard provides baseline criteria that: a. Apply to new buildings and renovation projects (new portions of buildings and their systems) and the surrounding site: a building or group of buildings, which that utilize a single submittal for a construction permit or which are within the boundary of a contiguous area under single ownership. Nominations are solicited during the first half of the Society year and then the Standards Committee will select the recipient at the ASHRAE Winter Meeting. The Standards Achievement Award will be presented during the Honors and Awards portion of the Plenary Session at the ASHRAE Annual Meeting in Denver. A certificate will be presented to the recipient by the ASHRAE President. Please submit your nomination to the Manager of Standards (sreiniche@ashrae.org) by November 29, 2012.
