Fijis Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama launched the Poppy Appeal with a touching message to mark the occasion by calling on all nations to work together to bring about world peace. Bainimarama said that as Fijians we believed that it is the responsibility of all nations to work together to make the world a safer place by bringing peace to the troubled regions. I need hardly remind you of our nations notable and distinguished record of service in past wars, including both World Wars, as well as present day peacekeeping missions in places as such Sinai, South Sudan and Iraq, to name a few, he said. He also said that the red flower (the poppy flower) has become a worldwide symbol of commemoration for Fijis fallen heroes, veterans and enlisted servicemen and women. A calling that is deeply embraced by the citizens our country. By our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, Bainimarama said.

Mika Singh Is In Demand!

Mika Singhs packed schedule comprises at least 15 live shows in a month. A source says, "Mika is one of the busiest singers in Bollywood today. Sources say that Actors such as Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar,Tusshaar Kapoor demand the music directors that they must have Mika's songs for their films. He is the only singer to perform live not only at award shows but also other events like cricket and wrestling matches and weddings as well. Also he is the highest paid singer today." Mika notes, "Actually my songs have become so popular and entertaining that

it is quite natural for event organizers to include them in their shows. I am thoroughly enjoying this phase of my career as a singer. Live performances give me a high. I had a Mika Singh Nite in Dubai recently and it was packed. The audience danced to my numbers. Also, the offers to perform live have come on their own. I have not gone out of my way to seek them. I guess Lady Luck is smiling at me." When asked about the astronomical sum he charges for doing shows, Mika shoots us down with a terse "no comment."

Captain Cook Cruises is continuing its Crowns of Thorns Removal programme in Fiji. It is working to control the population outbreak of the starfish and keep the coral reefs healthy; maintaining the excellent habitats for the fish and invertebrates in the Fiji waters the company operates its cruises. Captain Cook Cruises owns Tivua Island, which is currently being listed as a marine park, and operates daily cruises from Port Denarau to Tivua and twice weekly cruises to the islands of the Mamanuca and Yasawa. It first started the Crown of Thorns Removal programme when its management realized that there was an increase in the population of crown of thorns starfish. Jackie Charlton, CEO, Captain Cook Cruises Fiji explains: We have guests visiting Tivua Island every day on our day cruise. Snorkeling and swimming off Tivua is a highlight of this trip and as soon as we saw the coral on the reef was under threat we started the Crown of Thorns Removal programme which has been running for seven years. Coral reefs not only in Fiji but everywhere around the world need to be cared for to ensure their existence and we will continue running this programme to make sure our coral reef is healthy. Crown of thorns starfish are a threat to the health of any coral reef as they feed on living coral tissue. In small numbers, they are a part of the coral reef ecosystem. However, in vast numbers they can eat corals faster than corals can reproduce leading to a

reduction in coral cover. As Ms Charlton, explains their Crown of Thorns Removal programme is all about controlling the population of crown of thorns starfish rather than eradicating them. She said: Captain Cook Cruises monitoring programme helps control population outbreaks. Our in-house marine biologist monitors the outbreaks of crown of thorns starfish via a sustainable catch per unit effort. The coral growth which will keep up with the rate of crown of thorns is 0.1 and the CPUE obtained by our Marine Biologist during one month of diving off Tivua Island was 0.23, well above the sustainable value. We run a similar programme at Sacred Islands in the Mamanuca and at other reefs in the Yasawas that we visit. A lot of adult size crown of thorns starfish, who were in their reproductive stages already were caught, so it is imperative that we continue this programme to maintain the levels to 0.1 to ensure our coral reefs in Fiji remain thriving and healthy. GETTING TO TIVUA Captain Cook Cruises Tivua Island day cruise departs daily from Denarau Marina at 10.00am and returns at 5.00pm. Adults are $175.00 and children (3-15 yrs) are $119.00. Prices include all activities, lunch and beverages. Captain Cook Cruises operates three, four and seven-night cruises around the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands with its flagship Reef Endeavour. Cruises depart every Saturday and Tuesday from Port Denarau.

Suva Chamber of Commerce and Industry in partnership with the Insurance Council of Fiji co-hosted the QBE Insurance presentation on Insurance Its benefits and Under Insurance at the Holiday Inn Suva. Suva Chamber of Commerce president, Dr Nur Bano Ali said such presentations on insurance were encouraged and important for Fiji. Insurance is an integral part of business, property and our lives so its sometimes misunderstood in a lot of ways so I think as much education that we can get in this area will be greatly appreciated, she said. Dr Ali also said such presentations not only educate individuals but businesses as well on the importance of insurance,

the risks associated with it and the accessibility of it. President of the Insurance Council of Fiji, Matthew Kearns said: The islands are an often forgotten part of the insurance global market. Mr Kearns said it was an initiative that they deemed important and thus similar presentations have been carried out in Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands all within the past month. Yes, the Pacific forms a small proportion of the global insurance market but we do have a large number of catastrophes that originate from here. So it is important for us to explain why insurance is costly in the islands, Mr Kearns said.

An executive of the Fiji Car Club has asked the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for some sort of guideline on high performance vehicles so that its members are not hassled unnecessarily. The official, who asked not to be named because of the position he holds, made the comment after nine sports cars were seized and impounded by Police. He said the vehicles were parked along the seawall on Queen Elizabeth Drive while the drivers chatted, when Police officers arrived asking that they take their vehicles to the Totogo Police Station. Apparently, Police had received a report of cars racing in the area, but it was two guys unknown to us, who later left before Police arrived, the official said. We gave their registration numbers to Police, but there has been nothing done about them. The official alleged that their car keys were taken from them at Totogo and the vehicles locked up. They arrived early on Monday only to

be told that LTA officials would check the vehicles. The vehicle owners were later escorted to the LTAs Nasinu office for checks on the cars. At LTA the story changed from street racing to illegal vehicle modifications. We were given a defect order, citing illegal modifications, the official said. We tried to explain to LTA officials that the vehicles were not modified and came from the factory in that condition. LTA spokesperson Alfred Williame said it was initially a Police operation but the LTA staff were asked to check the vehicles for modifications. As far as LTA is concerned we were asked to check on vehicles after they were seized by Police, he said. LTA believes such modifications were made after vehicles passed the fitness test. Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri said Police mounted an operation last Sunday after a series of complaints from residents about noisy vehicles.

Our Future Is Truly Exciting: Fiji PM

Prime Minister, Commodore Bainimarama says the future of the country is truly exciting and as a nation, collectively, we dream of a Fiji that is strengthened by the unity of all her citizens: one people, one nation. As the country celebrates its 42nd Independence anniversary today, Bainimarama in his national address to all Fijians said the special day also gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our past, our present and our future. "At Independence 42 years ago today, we dedicated ourselves to building a strong nation," he said. "Fiji Day is an important day on the calendar for all Fijians and it is the day we set aside to reflect on our country, what it means to us and the pride we take in its achievements." "Today is a day for celebration, to join hands and commemorate the things that bind us together." "Despite challenges, we have never abandoned our dream to finally achieve our goals. And my fellow Fijians think about how far we have already come." "We believe in a Fiji that respects and cherishes all the strands of its many cultures, traditions and histories." "We argue that a common and equal citizenry is the only foundation upon which a modern, democratic Fiji can rest." "And we commit ourselves to leaving behind a better Fiji for our children." "So as we celebrate today, I ask that we pause for a moment to reflect on what the country that we all call home means to us, to our friends, and to our families, and what each of us can do to help build a better Fiji for all." "I wish you a happy and safe Fiji Independence Day," he concluded. Nation-wide celebrations are currently underway across different venues in the country.

The President of Kiribati Anote Tong reaffirmed his stand in advocating Fijis return to the Pacific Islands Forum. Mr Tong was the key note speaker during the launch of the Pacific International Relations Forum on Tuesday night, organised by the School of Government Development and International Affairs of the University of the South Pacific. The launch was at the Holiday Inn Suva. Mr Tong said the South Pacific should rally behind Fiji in calling for our return to the Pacific Islands Forum. Fiji was suspended in 2009 following the takeover in 2006. Mr Tong said countries of the region would make a strong voice if they rallied behind Fiji. It is not only the governments; it is the people and their countries. The small island States and other countries should get together and rally for Fijis return, President Tong said. I have been doing this all along and will continue to advocate for Fijis return. If we work together as island States then our voice will make an impact. I want to see Fijis return and even if that means that Fiji be reinstated tomorrow. Mr Tong was part of the Fiji Day celebrations at the invitation of the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau. He said climate and environmental change in the Pacific were two areas the region should raise their concern in unison. What happens in other parts of the world affect the lives of our communities. Climate change, world economic crisis, food and fuel prices, conflicts and others are some examples of the interdependent nature of the world we live in today. The Pacific is entering a new phase, a paradigm shift where the Pacific needs to chart its own course and lead global thinking in crucial areas like climate change, ocean governance and sustainable development. For a long time we have been branded as small island developing States. Our mindset and vision of ourselves see a world where developed countries will continue to dominate global politics, whether we have a say in it or not. We need to look at how we relate with each other in our region. There is greater strength in solidarity, he said.

Govt Officials Celebrate Fiji Day With Students Around The Country

Government officials visited various schools for children with special needs to celebrate Fiji Day. While Fiji Day celebrations in Suva officially started on Wednesday, the Ministry of Information, National Archives and Library Services visited the Gospel School of the Deaf at Samabula to celebrate with students. Ministry permanent secretary Sharon Smith Johns highlighted to the students the importance of the occasion and shared with students the vision that Government has for a united Fiji. Sometimes people do not take Fiji Day seriously and sometimes we forget what it means. Its good to know that all of you know and understand the importance of Fiji Day. Its inspiring to see each of you in your Fiji Day wear and your flags, Ms Smith- Johns said. Independence is a new beginning. When we celebrate Fiji day, we start new chapter. The message from Government is unity; let us unite as one nation to celebrate Fiji day, Ms

Smith Johns said. Sharing similar sentiments, the chairman of the school board Howard Politini encouraged the students to celebrate this momentous occasion. A nation grows, its starts building somewhere we have the good things and the not so good things that happen in our individual lives. Meanwhile other senior Government officials also visited other schools around the country and presented gifts and stationery. The Ministry of I-Taukei Affairs permanent secretary Mr Savenaca Kaunisela visited the Suva Special School and pointed out that every Fijian deserves to be recognised for their contribution towards our nation. As the theme of the Fiji Day reads, Celebrate a United Fiji today I believe that every child has something to contribute to the world, if only we give you a chance and with the truest measure of any society is how they treat those that are vulnerable, he said.

Nelesh Kamal Company has made it big in the export arena as his newest market has become the United States. This follows their win last year as the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LICI) Medium Exporter of the Year award. Company managing director, Nelesh Kamal, said he was optimistic about the companys position in securing another win in this years awards. For the last four years, the company has grown. With the Fijian Government introducing the Fijian Made and Buy Fijian campaign last year, Mr Kamal believes the company has proven itself by exporting more Fijian made and Fijian grown products to its market. Since starting in 2006, I only managed to sell kava from to those whom I export in New Zealand. But after winning the award, we have managed to secure another market in the US, he said. Organized by Investment Fiji, this year the Vodafone Westpac Prime Ministers Exporter of the Year Awards will be held on November 17 at the award winning InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa.

Kava Exporter Expands To US

I believe this year is another great year for us, because not only have we increased the number of things we sell to our clients, we have exported Fijian Made and Fijian Grown products, he said. I buy the products from farmers and handcrafters in Labasa. They are very hardworking people and they deserve their product to be recognised in the international market. When asked if he had plans on increasing his supply, he said: Not yet. I am still managing the demand of my current clients and this will keep me busy for a while. But Mr Nelesh was not always an exporter. I started off with kava dealing in the Labasa local market. And I realized that there was a potential market for overseas, he said. With a few phone calls and meetings, one of my friends in New Zealand agreed to buy my products. And from there, it has grown. Mr Nelesh operates in Labasa with only three staff to manage his day to day business.

President Obama Congratulates Fiji On Its Independence

President of the United States of America, Barrack Obama has extended his sincere congratulations to the people of the Republic of Fiji on the commemoration of the nation's 42nd anniversary of independence. "We share a mutual commitment to peace, freedom, the rule of law, democratic principles and respect among nations. The close ties between our people are a product of our shared commitment to these core values," he said in a statement released by the US embassy in Suva. "As Fiji celebrates its Independence, the American people continue to support the people of Fiji in your quest to draft a new Constitution and return to democracy. I am confident that the close relationship between our nations will strengthen as the people of Fiji work to build a more free and prosperous future." A nation-wide celebration was held to mark Fiji Day.

PNG Removes Tariffs From Selected Goods

THE recent removal of duty on selected products, by Papua New Guinea (PNG) will provide jobs in Fiji, as well as benefit Papua New Guineans. This comes after PNG took steps to remove duty on most of the products listed on their negative list, ahead of the scheduled time frame set by the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) in their Trade Agreement. This move by PNG was acknowledged by the Attorney-General and Minister for Industry and Trade Aiyaz SayedKhaiyum "We are pleased that PNG has heeded our call, as this will bring tangible benefits to Fijian exporters and will create jobs in Fiji," Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. "It will also benefit Papua New Guineans who will be able to enjoy quality Fijian products at competitive prices." The minister said this move by PNG acted as a signal to other countries, enforcing the need to keep to the commitments made regarding regional trade and economic integration. "This has been a positive move by PNG, which shows the true spirit of MSG," he said. The MSG Trade Agreement, which was revised in 2005, removed all existing barriers in trade within the sub-region, "PNG is a lucrative and rapidly growing market in the region, with a total population of more than seven million, and offers many exciting new prospects for Fijian businesses," he said. A statement by the Ministry of Information stated that PNG had removed tariffs on numerous items with a few exceptions "PNG has maintained tariffs only on mackerel, salt and sugar, while the rest of the more than 400 items in their negative list have become duty free with the recent gazettal," it read. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum noted the importance of the relationship between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Fijian industries in keeping to the targets set in the Trade Agreement "The Ministry of Industry and Trade will work closely with the Fijian industries to enable them to fully understand the rules and requirements of the MSG Trade Agreement," he said. This way, he said, "more trade can take place under the agreement."

Hope For Lami Town With Tsunami Siren

There will be now a tsunami warning beforehand for residents living between the Wailekutu and Delainavesi area in Lami. This after the Lami Tsunami Siren and Mass Notification Siren System was launched this week by the Local government officials including the Lami Town Council. The Ministry of Local government acting permanent secretary Mr Govind Sami congratulated the SOPAC Division of Secretariat of the Pacific Community, the National Disaster Management Office and the Lami Town Council for their partnership in developing this project. It is a unique achievement and Lami must be congratulated and is setting a pace, in terms of what other Government, Departments, Ministry and other town councils ought to do, Mr Sami said. This system is critical to improve the ability to quickly warn our communities about all types of hazards that are impacting our area not only tsunamis but also earthquakes, hurricanes and flooding.

Fiji's Commerce Commission announced an increase in the price of flour, kerosene and diesel. Commission Chairperson, Dr Mahendra Reddy said the reason for the increase in flour prices was due to supply side constraints. The main supply side issue is the prolonged drought in USA and Australia which has restricted production and supply of heat and thus created avenue for increase in price, Dr Reddy said. The prices began rising since June this year and the price changes at wholesale are as follows: The price of Bakers flour has increased by 7%, normal flour has increased by 3%, Sharps have increased by 5% and normal wholemeal flour has also increased by 5%. Meanwhile, a few changes have been

Price Increase Of Flour, Kerosene And Diesel

noted in petroleum products as there is no change in the price of motor spirit while there is a reduction in the price of premix. Kerosene and diesel prices on the other hand have increased. The crude oil prices in general started to decline most of the quarter but increased in the last part of the quarter, Dr Reddy added. He also said that the weakening of the Fijian dollar has not helped Fiji either. Kerosene price has increased by 3 cents and diesel has increased by 7cents however premix prices have fallen due to sluggish demand as well as new refinery into the market so the prices have fallen by 4 cents. The new prices will come into effect this Friday.

AUSTRALIA acknowledges that progress has been made in the return of Fiji to democratic elections and a unified agreement to reappoint High Commissioners from Australia and New Zealand to the country was a positive move. This, according to the acting Australian High Commissioner Glenn Miles. Speaking at the University of the South Pacific's Faculty of Business and Economics Fiji Update 2012 in Nadi, Mr Miles said while progress towards democratic elections was lauded, there was room for improvement in some areas. "The visit by the Ministerial Contact Group, of which our Prime Minister is a member, from the Pacific Islands Forum in May this year was an important marker," he said. "The MCG met government officials, civil societies and other groups and identified that progress had been made in the march towards election and Fiji's transition towards democracy and they also acknowledged that further progress was needed. In particular, on freedom of association, freedom of expression and freedom of media.

Envoy Lauds Progress Towards Elections

"At that time, the government provided assurances to the MCG on these issues and Australia looks to the government to continue to meet those assurances," he said. Mr Miles said one of the biggest steps towards improving relations was an agreement reached during a trilateral meeting in July in Sydney, Australia, between the foreign ministers from Fiji, Australia and New Zealand. "In late July at a trilateral meeting in Sydney, the PMs of Australia, NZ and Fiji agreed to the reappointment of High Commissioners and we see this as an important step in our bilateral relationship. Overall we see it as a very positive move. Australia and New Zealand have agreed on a more flexible approach to the implementation of travel sanctions. "Overall despite our political differences, Australia's relationship with Fiji is based on a wide range of interactions. From business to sport, from family to tourism and they're all underpinned by our strong people to people links. And after all we are all Pacific neighbours," he said.

Shangri-La Wins 2012 Bilibili Race

MANY households in Fiji remain highly vulnerable to falling below the poverty line. This was highlighted by the 2012 Pacific Regional MDGs Tracking Report launched on Tuesday by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS). The report provided relevant data that showed Fiji's path to achieving the Millennium Development Goals before 2015. One of the goals is the elimination of extreme poverty and hunger which according to the review, is still a concern in Fiji. The report noted the improvement of Fiji's poverty line by 5 per cent over a period of 10 years between 2000 to 2010, however, it said that the poverty gap ratio and the poorest quintile's share of consumption also fell during the same period. The report stated that the underpinned decline in poverty in the country was

Poverty Concern Remains High

Shangri-La Fijian Resort raced in victorious in Sigatoka Bilibili Race defeating Outrigger on the Lagoon Fiji 35 points to 17. Tournament organiser Una Murray says the competition was a tough one compared to past years but the level of skills stood out in the one day tournament. Most of these players are really skillful in the fun run, canoe race, women race,

kayaking and Bilibili. Every year there are signs of experience and in many years there will be players chosen from bilibili races to represent Fiji in international tournaments. Defending champions Warwick had to fall in third place with USP, Naviti Resort and Sofitel with 13 points. Naviti Resort will host next years tournament.

due to the considerable improvement of urban household conditions, however, much is still needed to be done for rural dwellers. The report highlighted that many rural areas showed no decline in poverty. "While urban sectors benefited from high growth in output, agricultural output generally declined. Consequently rural areas showed no decline in poverty. In addition a sizable concentration of households was near the poverty line. In other words, many households remain highly vulnerable to falling below the poverty line." It stated that subdued economic conditions, high inflation and lack of job opportunities could reverse the decline in poverty. "Fiji's economy contracted for two consecutive years since 2009 and is only slowly recovering since 2011. In addition, inflation, at 7.7 per cent in 2011, is yet to decelerate since climbing in 2008," the report said.

No Two Sets Of Scholarships For Fijians

Making a submission to the Constitution Commission at Khemendra College in Savusavu, a student of Savusavu Secondary said that scholarships should be awarded on merit. Krishal Kumar, a Form 7s student said, There should be a platform for giving scholarships to the qualified students irrespective of their race and ethnic background. He said all people born in Fiji are Fijians so there should not be two sets of scholarships if we all are considered Fijians. Sharing his sentiments of being a Fijian, Kumar said, We should be all called Fijians but it should not just be written down in the Constitution, it should also be practiced in real life. He also stated that there was a different cut off mark for the i-taukei students and a separate one for the others. For example, if there are 700 scholarships then the best 700 should be chosen without considering race or gender, Kumar added. Meanwhile, another student from Savusavu Secondary, Uday Prasad proposed that parents paying school or university fee should be given tax allowance as some people have more than one child attending these institutions. The two students have also proposed for the President of Fiji to be elected through voting by the people of Fiji.

Peoples Party Calls For Equal Status For 3 Languages

THE United Peoples Party has made a submission for the Hindi, Fijian and English languages to have equal status as the languages of the Fiji Islands. It recommended the three main languages be taught in schools and thereby remove the remaining elements of mistrust because of a basic lack of understanding. This was one of the many points made by the UPP in its written submission to the Constitution Commission. In the submission the party also called for any members of the judiciary assisting illegal governments in future to be found guilty of treason. The UPP also called for all funds except salaries and pensions to be frozen in the event of an illegal takeover only to be reinstated once the democratic government is either reinstated or reelected. "All banks holding government funds will be prohibited from dispensing any monies other then salaries and wages so long as the elected members of parliament and government are denied their right to govern," the UPP said. The party also voiced its support for the use of the name 'Fijian' to be reserved for the iTaukei community and while all other citizens of Fiji be known as 'Fiji Islanders'. "We further submit that the issue of a common name is a matter that can only be properly discussed and debated in an all inclusive process to be conducted by our soon to be re-established democratically elected parliament," the UPP said. The party submitted its support for dual citizenship but said there needed to be regulations in place to ensure there was no abuse of the privilege.

18-Year-Old Student Found Dead On Beach

The body of an 18-year-old student was found floating at Taunovo Bay in Pacific Harbour. Fiji Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the student was reported missing during a picnic trip at Loloma Beach in Pacific Harbour. The deceased was discovered missing at 2:10pm by a staff member of the school. Naisoro could not reveal other details saying the investigation is still in its initial stages and is still underway.

Missing Student Returns Home

THE Constitution Commission is calling on citizens who are mailing their submissions to get them in by October 15. Constitution commissioner Penelope Moore said though the deadline was set for October 10, they were giving people until the 15th to mail their submissions in. "We are also asking if those who are hand delivering and emailing their submissions to have them in by the end of the week," said Ms Moore. "These dates are the absolute last because we need to digitize them and have a chance to read them before we continue with our work." Ms Moore who just returned from Vanua Levu said the submissions heard in the Friendly North were similar to

those in Viti Levu. "I guess they are rather similar but we have heard some good ones like including women in decision making bodies like parliament and the need for streamlining of provincial councils and district offices," she said. "We also heard a few submissions on the equality in rural development and the support for farming." The Constitution Commission will move to Lau and Rotuma next for its public submissions and Ms Moore said there were a number of things they expected to hear about from these outer islands. "I suppose like the Kia and Rabi communities we will be hearing about the realities and difficulties of living in these isolated communities." she said.

New Ship Owner Tells Of Plans For MV Suilven

AROUND $133.6million was paid as interest to members of the Fiji National Provident Fund in 2011 while withdrawals decreased from 2010 to 2011 by $26.89m. These were some of the updates presented by University of the South Pacific's Doctor Sunil Kumar at the recent Fiji Economic Update 2012 in Suva. Highlighting a range of activities, Dr Kumar said the fund had an investment portfolio of $3.15billion which steadily increased over the years to $3.5bn in 2011. The investments included government with $2107.9m in 2010, Housing Authority with $67.2m, and statutory bodies and local governments comprising $507m. Private housings comprised $63.2m while investments towards tourism projects for 2010 reached $439.1m bringing the total value of investments

The Fiji Embassy in Tokyo is organizing an informal gathering of Japanese affiliates, friends and members of the Fijian Community in Japan to celebrate the 2012 Fiji Day. The event will take place at the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club (YC&AC) on Saturday, October 13, 2012. This is the same venue where the event for last year was held and the program will start from 5.00pm to 9.00pm. Fijis Ambassador to Japan Isikeli Mataitoga said that even though the celebration will be an informal one, it does not take away the spirit of our preparation

for that year to over $3184m. Dr Kumar said the Reserve Bank of Fiji's data for early 2012 forecasted investment levels for the year would be 18 per cent of Gross Domestic Product. Higher investments in tourism and public investment projects were anticipated to further enhance investment activities for the year. Meanwhile, RBF noted a 13 per cent increase in domestic VAT collection until July this year while new consumption lending increased by 161.4 per cent or over $85.6m. New vehicle sales until June also increased by 34.8 per cent while job advertisement until July and house sales increased by 6.7 per cent and 17.9 per cent respectively. In terms of construction, cement production from January to July increased by 12.3 per cent noting an increase in domestic cement sales by 2.2 per cent.

Local shipping competition is about to get even stronger. Venu Shipping owner Ben Naidu is planning to get his new acquisition, MV Suilven, into action as quick as he can. Mr Naidu confirmed that the former Bligh Water Shipping Limited flagship will be commencing operations soon. Upon the completion of the vessel refitting business will commence. I feel that the Suilven is a very safe vessel and if refitted well she would be a very comfortable ship to travel by and further she would add class to my fleet of vessels, Mr Naidu said. Although Mr Naidu preferred not to disclose the price at which the vessel was purchased, he did say there were some changes that the vessel was going to undertake. The decision to purchase the vessel

was to help grow and develop the maritime community at large towards sustainability. Through his thirty years of work experience Mr Naidu has traveled to countries like Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Singapore and Japan where he did hands-on training which has equipped him to be the ship owner and operator he is today. As the name Suilven has no significance to me or our family, we will change the name to portray a part of our family heritage and this we will announce shortly, Mr Naidu said. Venu Shipping currently operates the Sinu-I-Wasa on the Suva-Kadavu route. It also operates cargo services. With the competition in the shipping industry, Mr Naidu said: We must admit that we are doing enough to keep us afloat in this time of very intense competition in the inter-island shipping business. He said: We will advise those travelling on the various facilities that we propose to offer onboard in due course. Bligh Water Shipping had acquired the 3638-ton Suilven from Strait Shipping in New Zealand in 2004. The 726-ton Sinu-I-Wasa was also a former member of the Strait Shipping fleet and also arrived into the Fiji in 2004.

Air Pacific, Fijis national airline, hosted a world premiere event in Suva to introduce the new livery and features of its brand-new Airbus A330s scheduled to take to the skies in 2013. "The unveiling of the new look and features of our soon-to-arrive A330s is the latest milestone in a series of initiatives that are a part of the Air Pacifics restructuring and rebranding. We couldnt think of a better way to honour Fijis national day holiday than to share a first glimpse of the exciting things in store for Fiji and our passengers," said Dave Pflieger, Air Pacifics Managing Director and CEO. The new fleet represents many firsts for the airline. The aircraft are the first brand-new, wide-bodied aircraft the company has ever purchased. The state-of-the-art Airbus A330s are the first flown with the first-ever highly fuel-efficient, low-CO2 emission Rolls Royce Trent 700 engines. And flying under a new name and with a new brandmark, the new A330s represent the first aircraft designed exclusively for Fiji and Fijis national airline. "Air Pacific is on a transformational journey to become a best-in-class airline, and we are pleased to have best-in-class partners-Airbus, RollsRoyce, Singapore Airlines, Panasonic and Zodiac Aerospace/Weber-to join us. We have made significant progress with our turnaround plan during the last 30 months, and have taken great strides to ensure everyone who steps

aboard Fiji Airways in 2013 will be able to start their holiday when they step aboard. Service and comfort are top priorities, and these state-of-theart aircraft promise the best of both worlds," stated Mr. Pflieger. The island nations new aircraft are equipped with cloud-comfortable economy and business class seats designed by Zodiac Aerospace/Weber. Each seat will have 110v in-seat power for a full range of electronic devices, including laptops, games, iPhones and iPads. In addition, the new aircraft will be equipped with one of the most advanced in-flight entertainment systems flying today, designed and installed by Panasonic. "We knew the exterior design needed to be just as distinctive, unique, and true to Fiji. Our mission was to create a proud symbol that would stand out at some of the worlds busiest international airports, a symbol that would allow us to become the very best Flying Ambassador that Fiji could ever have," said the airlines CEO. On the aircrafts exterior, three Masi symbols will represent Fiji Airways. The distinctive Teteva motif, designed by renowned Fijian Masi artist Makereta Matemosi, is at the heart of the new brandmark revealed last month. Featured prominently at the center of the airlines new brandmark and on the tail of the new aircraft, it represents the friendliness of Fijians and their deep caring nature. The Rova symbol, on the aircraft engine, symbolises the warm greeting Fijians extend to visitors, while the Makare symbol, which appears in the prominent position and scale on the front and underside of the plane, communicates the new Fiji Airways name by evoking the allure of clear water flowing on a white sandy beach. The unveiling of Fiji Airways new livery and plane interiors is the latest milestone in a series of initiatives that are part of Air Pacifics revitalisation and modernisation. The final phase of this process will begin in early 2013 when the airline welcomes the first of the three brand-new A330s and returns to its 1951 name of Fiji Airways. The second A330 is scheduled to arrive in May 2013 and the third in November 2013. The full re-branding for the airline is due to be complete by the end of 2013, by which time the new Fiji Airways brand will roll out across the international marketplace, ticket offices, check-in counters, airport lounge facilities, uniforms and the airlines official website.

The airlines World Premier event in Suva, Fiji, was dedicated to raising funds for Fijis neediest children and children from flood-stricken families. "Because we are a part of Fijis national community, we wanted to give back to Fijis local community," said Mr. Pflieger. "Wings of Hope, our airlines charity, is committed to supporting Fijis most precious resource - its children." The airline donated two round-trip business class tickets on the first A330 inaugural flight - or a flight of the winners choice - in a raffle and pledged to match its donations dollar-for-dollar. The proceeds will benefit the FRIEND (Foundation for Rural Integrated Enterprises and Development), which is based in Lautoka, through the Wings of Hope. The airline earlier this year donated FJ$100,000 to FRIEND. Wings of Hope has in the past also contributed to Nadi Hospital to assist school-children whose families were affected by March floods, Treasure Home (home for orphaned children) and various school projects.

Strengthen Ties Between Fiji, Wallis & Futuna

More Aid Plan Ahead

Australias development assistance to Fiji is expected to increase, says acting Australian Head of Mission Glenn Miles. Mr Miles made the announcement at the University of the South Pacific's Fiji Update in Nadi. He said Australia's commitment directly benefited the health and education of low income earners and those affected by the two floods earlier this year. "We remain Fiji's largest development partner with a total official development assistance estimated at $100m Fijian dollars in 2012-2013 and that's only going to increase further in 20132014." Mr Miles said. "Our assistance is focused on increased support for the most vulnerable communities in Fiji," he said. On the health front, Mr Miles said Australian aid was focused on ensuring kids had access to vaccines and on natal and non-communicable disease awareness programs. "Our current programs are focused on improving pre and post natal care at 17 sub-divisional health centers and hospitals, supporting diabetes centers at 32 health centers and supporting new vaccination programs targeting children," he said. "We need to ensure Fiji's children are protected from pneumonia, diarrhea, sepsis and cervical cancer. "And the socio-economic benefits are obvious, they free up hospital resources which are constantly under pressure and by improving the quality of life for children and their families, this will contribute to an active and prosperous community," said Mr Miles. On education the senior diplomat said: "We're also improving education by providing grants to school committees and refurbishing 180 primary schools in Fiji's poorest districts."

Fiji's pig farmers association has warned that the local industry is under threat from subsidised imports, with products made from imported pork on sale for at least 10 per cent lower than local producers can supply it. The imported products, which are Australian-branded, are made from pork produced in Europe and Canada's heavily subsidised markets. Chairman of the Pig Farmers Association of Fiji, Simon Cole, told the media that while the fresh pork market will remain, Fiji's processed pork market will be "hammered." "There's going to be a tightening, we're going to lose farmers, we're going to lose production to a subsidised product, and that just doesn't seem to make sense," he said. Fiji's pork industry is worth FJD $16 million, compared with Australia's $3 billion industry. Mr Cole says the small Fijian industry is happy to compete with Australian growers but not government subsidised industries such as Canada's. "We can compete with the Australian

farmers and do compete with the Australian farmers," he said. "Our industry here is not subsidised and we do compete therefore at a world trade level and I think that's an important benchmark. "I don't want to be protected for the sake of being protected." Chief Executive of Australian Pork Limited, Andrew Spencer, says he objects to Canada's policy of heavily subsidising its agricultural industry. "We believe that for the benefit of the world, and its generally understood by economists, free trade is going to help not only developed economies but developing ones as well." Mr Spencer says pressure needs to be kept on subsidised producers to enter the level playing field, especially at forums like the Doha Development Round, the current trade negotiation round of the WTO. "We really do need Australia to work hard at our contribution to making sure that those types of rounds come to a conclusion that is going to progress world trade to a better place."

Lets Reflect On The Past, President Urges Fiji Citizens

As the country celebrates its 42nd birthday as an independent nation, Fiji President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has urged all citizens to dedicate this special day to reflect on the past, assess the current situation and to fine-tune their path towards the future. "This years Fiji Day theme of Celebrating a United Fiji is a bold call to all Fijians. The theme invites all of us to be united and to remain united and positive as we face the many challenges before us," he said in his national address to the nation "Fiji, since 1970, has experienced many defining moments and life-changing experiences. We have had many good times as we provided and became a home to a wide range of people from within the Pacific and beyond, and from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds which contributed to our rich multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious society." "We provided an enabling environment for our entrepreneurs to establish, flourish, create employment and generate revenue, thus helping to drive and sustain the economy." We embraced globalization and were accepted into the United Nations where we have been playing an active supporting role but are now set, to play a lead, role in this august body through our recent nomination to Chair, by 2013, the Group of 77 which comprises the largest inter-governmental organization of developing countries in the United Nations." "We have ratified and continue to review and implement international conventions and agreements that have not only brought recognition to the country, but more importantly that have also helped to crystallize and elevate our collective responsibility towards our children, youths, women, the elderly, and persons with special needs." "We have and continue to contribute to peace-keeping operations in countries that need our assistance." "And among many others, we have celebrated numerous outstanding accomplishments in the international sports arena, culminating in our recent Gold medal win at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London." "At the same time, Fiji has had to endure many unfortunate events. We experienced traumatising situations where our social fabric was tested to the limit. Our economy became unstable and less predictable. Politically, it was chaotic." "On closer examination, our socioeconomic challenges were caused largely by our political instability. In the democratic environment we were introduced to, our electoral system encouraged voting along racial lines. This remains one of the key contributors to our political instability." "I am certain that as we search the world today, we will hardly find any country especially a modern, prosperous and progressive country that votes along ethnic lines. If anything, our current voting system only served to accentuate our differences instead of appreciating the richness in our diversity." "At some stage in our development, we opted to further divide our people through affirmative action policies which only brought about preferential treatment for certain groups of people, many of whom, very unfortunately, continue to demand that special treatment." "Because of the lack of thorough and proper monitoring and evaluation, as well as the checking and balancing, and the close scrutiny of the protective mechanisms, we encountered many instances of poor governance. Corruption set in and became systemic and we began to see the huge disparity between the rich and the less fortunate." "When there is a national crisis, whether it is political or economic, the larger part of the population of Fiji become victims and the effects of this cannot be measured in monetary terms or fully assessed. Nor can the victims be compensated for the trauma and other effects they suffered." "As if these were not enough, we now hear of renewed calls to make Fiji a Christian State. This would effectively further divide our people based on religious beliefs. I humbly advise that we should tread with the uttermost caution on this issue for I am a firm believer in the age-old adage of the separation of the church and the state. The Way the World Should Be "If we were to study the relationship that existed between our people at the community and the village level, we would have found that the majority of our people related very well with one another. We would have found that our people had big hearts and were very caring." "Fiji was not referred to as the Way the World should be for no reason. The world saw an island paradise filled with an interesting combination of people who were very friendly and accommodating. The world saw the good in us." "However, as I mentioned earlier, our political structures of the past only served to divide us, although they were not designed to be divisive. They slowly and surely brought out racism, disagreement, distrust and hatred. These led many of our people to turn against each other, and turn our back on one another." "Fortunately for all of us, at this extremely important juncture in our growth as an independent state, we seem to be now having things under control," Ratu Epeli added. "In these 42 years of being a sovereign nation, we have, albeit only recently, gathered the courage to re-define our future. We have and will continue to learn from the lessons of our past, taking the cue from two great countries in our region who had bitter pasts and who have boldly overhauled their systems in keeping with international norms, and who are now enjoying the fruits of those essential changes. We should endeavor to emulate them." "We now have a Government that is not obligated by the urges of only a certain section of its voters, but by the spirit and the determination to do what is right for everyone all Fijians, without exception." "We have a clear vision, real values and very clear, realistic and achievable goals. All these, and more, are contained in the Peoples Charter for Change, Peace and Progress and the Roadmap to Democracy and Sustainable SocioEconomic Development." "Our Constitution-making process is now well underway. We have been successful with the Electronic Voter Registration and we are now moving towards the end of the public consultation period for the new Constitution. These are unprecedented measures." "The public service and public sector reforms are now realizing tangible results. Legislations are renewed in an effort to modernize our country. Infrastructure development is well underway with new forms of assistance from countries who are our friends and who respect our sovereignty." "We have for the past six years stabilized our security and our economic situation. The latest advice from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority is that our revenue generation continued to increase despite the political and natural disasters of recent years. The Reserve Bank of Fiji advises that we have a healthy foreign reserve." "Our election to Chair the United Nations Group of 77 is a clear statement of the support for Fijis pragmatic and systematic approach to solving its internal problems and returning the country to sustainable parliamentary democracy." "This certainly says a lot about our capabilities to manage our country whilst contributing to the international community. However, while we should not and cannot be complacent, the achievements we have to-date must be celebrated." "Now is the time to press forward and open the doors of opportunity so that we can rebuild a Fiji that is nonracial, culturally vibrant and united, well governed, inclusive and truly democratic. A Fiji that seeks progress and prosperity through merit-based equality of opportunity and peace." "People often comment on how things can or needed to be changed and then just sat around, waiting, fully expecting the government of the day alone, to deliver the goods. We need to change that mind-set and become proactive and say firmly how can I or how can we, work with you to actively contribute to moving Fiji forward. "Each one of us has a special role to play in helping to re-build our nation. Leaders from all walks of life need to be effective and visionary. We need leaders with progressive vision that is motivating, inspiring and most importantly unifying; leaders who are role models and who can make firm and fair decisive decisions." "Parents - you have a duty to be always there for your children and to raise them with family values and teachings that will last a life time. Had this been done lovingly in all our homes where responsibility begins we would have less of the waywardness that we have been experiencing." "And now to you the youths and young adults - the future leaders - you are our hope for the future and you will have to learn to shoulder the responsibilities of steering this nation to greater heights. You have the strength, the time and the dynamism of youth on your side to make those responsibilities achievable." "My fellow Fijians, in conclusion, I want to remind you all that Fiji is blessed with an abundance of resources that can and must be fully utilised. So, my challenge to all of you is put them to good and lasting use for all Fijians and for our beloved nation Fiji."

On Patrol With Rajeshree Kamble, Mumbai's Grandma Spit Inspector

nut. In a boost for the anti-spit brigade, Maharashtra state - of which Mumbai is the capital - is among several states to recently ban "gutka", a mass-produced mix that is widely chewed and spat out, staining the streets. Raja Narasimhan, who set up the Spit Free India Campaign, does not have high hopes of a hygiene revolution on spitting, with gutka still found on the black market and its ingredients available separately. "There's no way you can stop it," he said. "Even people driving or riding in a Mercedes roll down the window and spit." Traditional handmade "paan" (areca and flavourings wrapped in betel leaf, sometimes with tobacco) remains a hugely popular palate cleanser. The 200 rupee fine is more than a day's pay for some Mumbai citizens, and in the year to July, roughly 170,000 spitting penalties were collected in the city, according to Seema Redkar at the MCGM's solid waste management department. As well as the nuisance detectors, hundreds of "clean-up marshals" deployed through private agencies were introduced in 2007 to help enforce cleanliness bylaws, but they have been dogged by allegations of misconduct. The public's attitude is partly to blame, said Ms Redkar. "Culturally we're not ready to pay fines". Other novel attempts to halt spitting have struggled. Local activist Vijay Sangole tried sticking up pictures of Hindu gods at popular spitters' spots in a bid to make offenders think twice.

Official "nuisance detector" Rajeshree Rajaram Kamble admonishes pedestrians caught littering in Mumbai. At a bus stop in south Mumbai, a man hawks loudly before expelling a mouthful of brown saliva into the road without a second thought - but unfortunately for him, the spit inspector is watching. Rajeshree Rajaram Kamble, a 53-yearold grandmother dressed in a flowery tunic with matching blue shawl and trousers, strides towards her prey and firmly requests a fine of 200 rupees ($3.78). The man appears surprised by her finger-waggling admonishment, and says he does not have any money on him. "You can wash it away," Ms Kamble retorts, marching him to a nearby sugarcane juice stall to get some water. "If you don't wash it, then you can take off your clothes and clean it." The man is still reluctant and their row gets increasingly heated. Onlookers pause to watch as voices are raised - "Sorry is not enough!" Ms Kamble insists - until the man relents and sheepishly rinses away the evidence. For Ms Kamble, such altercations are just part of the job. "Everyday I fight with people," she said. "Nobody is interested in paying the fine." Working for the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), she is one of 25 "nuisance detectors" taking on grown men and women every day over offences such as public littering, urinating and bathing on the street. In such a dirty and overcrowded city, Ms Kamble faces an uphill battle but refuses to admit defeat against habits such as spitting, which health experts believe may help to spread tuberculosis. "Every time I see someone spitting, something happens inside me. My blood boils and I get very angry," said Ms Kamble, who goes out on patrol armed with just a plastic identity tag and fine receipt book. Spitting in a public place, unless a spittoon is provided, is banned under a 2006 Mumbai bylaw. But across the country, many Indians spit regularly at street corners, out of car windows, onto and even inside buildings: few spaces are spared, especially from those who chew various mixtures of tobacco and areca

"They were not deterred at all," he said. "There's absolutely no civic sense." More concerning are the health risks that spitting poses. While the link between spitting and the spread of TB has not been widely studied, "logically it's very much possible", said Soumya Swaminathan, director of the Chennai-based National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis. She said the bacteria of TB, an airborne disease that kills about 1000 people a day in India, could be spat out into dust particles and then inhaled by others. "It can survive for quite a long time," she said. Since March, health officials in Mumbai have been distributing anti-TB posters and leaflets containing simple pictorial warnings against spitting and openly coughing. But many doubt whether such campaigns can be effective. "Our view is that awareness stickers have really minimal impact. Most people find it hard to make these connections," said Ram Prasad at Final Mile, a behavioral research group in Mumbai. The conventional "do not spit" signs that currently dot Mumbai may even encourage new spitters. "If we keep communicating that a lot of people spit, it kind of becomes a norm and hence acceptable," warned Mr Prasad. Old habits may die hard, but Ms Kamble remains convinced that her mission can make a difference. "I feel proud of raising awareness in society," she said.

Gaddafi's Son 'Will Be Hanged': Lawyer

Australia Now World's 12ThLargest Economy

Australia's economy has overtaken Spain's to become the 12th-largest in the world, according to the Government's analysis of new International Monetary Fund (IMF) data. Treasurer Wayne Swan has described the result as a "remarkable achievement" given Australia's relative population size. "Since the Government came to office, Australia has moved up three places from 15th-largest economy to now be the 12th-largest economy in the world," Mr Swan said. "Since 2007, Australia's economy has surpassed the economies of South Korea, Mexico and now Spain. "These are three very different economies from three very different parts of the world, further highlighting the exceptional performance of our economy." The comparisons are based on a country's gross domestic product expressed in the current exchange rate for the US dollar. But it comes as the IMF cuts the growth outlook for the global economy and warns that while the recovery is continuing, it has weakened. It says the debt crisis in the eurozone remains the most obvious threat to the global outlook and unemployment is likely to remain "elevated" in many parts of the world. Despite the gloomy predictions, Mr Swan says the Government remains on track to deliver a surplus this financial year. "The Australian economy remains the standout performer of the developed world, with solid growth, low unemployment, contained inflation, strong public finances and an enormous pipeline of investment in resources which is boosting our economic capacity and export volumes," Mr Swan said in a statement. The Treasurer is due to deliver a budget update before the end of the year, which is expected to include significant spending cuts given the continuing decline in company tax receipts.

Moamar Gaddafi's son Seif al-Islam without a doubt would get a death sentence if tried in Libya, his Australian lawyer has told International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. While the ICC wants Seif, the only son of the slain Libyan leader in custody, to be tried in The Hague, Libya's postrevolutionary authorities insist he should stand trial in his home country. Libya's lawyers told a three-judge bench the country had enough evidence to charge Seif with crimes against humanity, committed when Gaddafi and his loyalists tried to put down Libya's bloody revolution last year. But the lawyers admitted that although Tripoli was committed to a fair trial for Gaddafi, it was a "complicated process and that Libya needed more time". Australian lawyer Melinda Taylor, a member of the ICC's defence office, said Gaddafi's right to a fair trial was being violated while he is held in isolation in the north-western Libyan hill town of Zintan, where he has been in custody since his arrest on November 19. Ms Taylor and three of her ICC colleagues were arrested on spying allegations earlier this year before an apology from the ICC saw her released. "Although the Libyan government has danced around the issue, let's be very clear; if convicted (in Libya) Mr Gaddafi will be hanged," Ms Taylor told judges. The ICC issued arrest warrants for Gaddafi, 40, and the late Libyan

leader's former spymaster Abdullah Senussi, 63, in June 2011 on two counts of crimes against humanity committed while trying to crush the uprising that ended over four decades of Gaddafi's iron-fisted rule. But the ICC's jurisdiction is complementary to that of national courts, and it can only act when a member state is unwilling or unable to do so. Ms Taylor cited a law passed by Libya's post-revolutionary National Transitional Council (NTC) which said no child of Gaddafi will ever benefit from leniency. Putting Gaddafi on trial will "not be motivated by a desire for justice but a desire for revenge," Ms Taylor said. "Mr Gaddafi is not a guinea pig (for Libyan justice). He is a person with rights. "He should not be languishing in prison while Libya tries to build a judicial system." Libyan officials had asked in May for the court to quash a surrender request and throw out the case. The court's judges are to make a ruling at an unspecified later date. Asked to clarify dates for Seif and Senussi's possible trials, Philippe Sands who represents Tripoli in the case said "the best estimate for a start date is February 2013". The UN estimates that up to 15,000 people were killed in the conflict, but Libya's NTC put the figure as high as 30,000.

Bonus Bond jackpot goes to 19-year-old after parents forget to transfer ownership - but all family profit in end. A South Auckland teenager has become a millionaire from an investment belonging to his parents because they didn't get around to transferring it into their names. The 19-year-old from Papatoetoe, who wanted to remain anonymous, said he was in shock when he was told he had won the top prize of $1 million in the Bonus Bonds monthly draw. He hung up twice on the ANZ representative who rang him because he thought it was a practical joke. "It wasn't until she rang a third time that I suspected she might be telling the truth. I was just basically in shock," he said. His parents bought the $1500 in bonds from their son to help him buy his first car four years ago. But they never got around to transferring the bonds into their names. "It was up to them but they never ended up doing it. I was a bit young to know about that sort of stuff." He said there were no hard feelings. He had paid off their mortgage of almost $300,000. He has also bought a $19,000 car and a laptop, and a boat for his brother. The family was also looking at buying a new house. "It would have been spent in exactly the same way anyway. They are happy as, to be honest. And I know that what's theirs is also mine, so I don't mind," the teenager said. "We never ever in our wildest dream thought this would happen. At the time we thought about going in and changing [the names] over," his mother said. But it was likely she would have simply withdrawn the amount in cash. The parents had been buying Bonus Bonds for their two sons since they were 3 years old.

A STRONG earthquake shook parts of eastern Indonesia, sending residents and hotel guests running out of their rooms, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Indonesia's meteorology and geophysics agency said there was no danger of a tsunami after the quake, which struck at 6.43pm local time (10.43pm AEDT). The US Geological Survey said the quake measured magnitude 6.3 and was centered 139 kilometers southeast of Ambon, the provincial capital of Maluku, at a depth of 34 kilometers. Edi Hatu, a hotel employee in Ambon, said panicked guests ran out of their rooms, but there was no damage. Indonesia, the world's largest archipelago nation, is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader and former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala on Wednesday backed the view that the marriageable age for girl be lowered to prevent the rising number of rapes in the state. "I am with the khaps on this issue. This will protect women," Chautala told journalists as he came out of the Haryana Raj Bhavan after submitting a memorandum to Governor Jagannath Pahadia against the increasing instances of rapes in the state. In the memorandum, Chautala urged the governor to call a special session of the Haryana assembly to discuss the rising crime in the state against women. Khap panchayat (community council) leader Sube Singh this week said that the lowering of marriageable age, which is 18 years for girls at present as per law, would help prevent rapes.

Early Marriage Of Girls Would Prevent Rapes

Justifying his stand, Chautala said even in the Mughal era people would marry off their daughters early to save them from atrocities of the Mughals. At least 15 cases of rape have been reported across Haryana in the past 31 days. To assuage resentment among people, Congress president Sonia Gandhi flew to Sachhakhera village near Narwana town in Jind district of Haryana on Tuesday to meet the family of a minor, Dalit girl who was gang-raped last Saturday. The victim later set herself on fire and died. Reacting to the khap leaders' demand to lower marriageable age for girls, Gandhi said the judiciary will decide on law and no one else. Just a day after Gandhi's visit, another gang-rape was reported on Wednesday in Kalayat area of Kaithal district.

Gaby Scanlan, from Heysham in the UK, drank the cocktail during a night out celebrating her 18th birthday in Lancaster last Thursday. She first felt breathless, then developed severe stomach pain and was taken to Lancaster Royal Infirmary, where doctors diagnosed a perforated stomach. Ms Scanlan was rushed to surgery where her stomach was removed in order to save her life. On Monday she was reported to be in a serious but stable condition. A Lancashire police spokesman told the reporter their investigation was still in its early stages and they were interviewing witnesses. "The premises involved have fully cooperated with all agencies and have suspended drinks involving liquid nitrogen," they said. The media reported that the venue, Oscar's wine bar, sent their "heartfelt best wishes" to Ms Scanlon and her family "at this distressing time". The Oscar's had recently promoted a cocktail called the "Pornstar Martini", containing liquid nitrogen and champagne, for nine pounds ($14). Ms Scanlan's stepfather, Ian Henshall, said the family was hoping for a quick recovery. "We are just concentrating on her getting better," he said. Ms Scanlan was apparently well enough to post on Twitter on Sunday, complaining that people were joking about her nearly dying, incident. A local councilor, Paul Aitchison, said he had also tried a liquid nitrogen drink

at the bar called a "Nitro Jagermeister" - but without any ill effects. Local director of public health Dr John Aston said Ms Scanlan was the victim of an "irresponsible alcohol industry that's now competing on gimmicks." "(Bartenders) should not be playing chemistry," he said, calling for closer regulation of the drinks industry. Several trendy bars in Australia have recently jumped on the liquid nitrogen cocktail trend, including The Roosevelt and The Zeta Bar in Sydney. The latter's website boasts that "guests can expect the unexpected with deconstructed vintage classics and drinks with edible components and liquid nitrogen infusions." Nitrogen takes liquid form at 196 degrees below zero Centigrade. Thanks to the 'Liedenfrost Effect', people will survive brief contact with liquid nitrogen unscathed. But longer exposures will cause 'cryogenic burns' and kill unprotected flesh in the same way as frostbite. Drinking liquid nitrogen is a party trick with occasionally devastating consequences, as the gas rapidly warms and expands in the stomach, causing it to burst. Drops of liquid nitrogen can also burn away the lining of the stomach. People who have had their stomach removed can continue to live a normal life and eat and drink regular food, but they can only eat smaller portions and need to take vitamin supplements for nourishment.

Indian Court Puts Deadline On Toilets In Schools

India's Supreme Court has ordered that schools nationwide must be provided with toilets and drinking water within six months. Research in India shows that wherever toilet facilities are inadequate, parents are reluctant to send their children to school - especially if they are girls. The activist group, Right to Education Forum, says 40 per cent of schools in India do not have toilets. The Supreme Court says having the basic facilities are part of a child's right to an education. The judgement says a lack of toilets and drinking water "clearly violates the right to free and compulsory education of children". The top court was acting on a petition filed in 2004 by a charity organization, but that had still not been implemented despite several rulings. State and privately run schools in the country now have six months to ensure students have access to toilets and drinking water.

High Court Welcomes New Justice

The High Court of Australia in Canberra has sworn its 49th Justice, with Stephen Gageler taking his place on the bench. Justice Gageler was sworn in during a ceremony witnessed by his colleagues, three former High Court Chief Justices, family and even a few of his old high school teachers. The High Court is familiar territory for Justice Gageler who told the court he has taken part in about 100 cases there, since his time as an associate to former Chief Justice Sir Anthony Mason. Attorney-General Nicola Roxon who chose Mr Gageler, noted the irony that there are not many professions where ending up where you began is a career progression. Other speakers paid tribute to Justice Gageler's command of the law, noting the breadth of his experience from a case where he represented Avon cosmetics, to his recent win in the plain packaging case against the big tobacco companies. It has been a long journey for the sawmiller's son from the Hunter Valley region in New South Wales, who attended public schools, before going on to excel in the law and Tae Kwon Do, in which he has a black belt. Justice Gageler has swapped camps from Commonwealth Solicitor General and key legal adviser to the Federal Government. He has promised to bring to the court no ambition or agenda. He has replaced former Justice William Gummow, who retired last week.

Strippers Pole-Dance To Appease The Dead

DRESSED in miniskirts barely covering their hips, the two girls took to the neon-lit stage and moved vigorously to the loud pumping pop music. Their job: to appease the wandering spirits.
"I've watched this since I was little so it's nothing peculiar for me. Performing for the dead is just like performing for the living people," she said. "They liked to sing when they were alive and their relatives thought they would have liked to have somebody sing for them in the end. For me, I get good tips and I hope I am accumulating good karma too." Other performers, however, make much less money and tend to be more discreet about their job, especially those who still do striptease despite risking arrest. Stripping nude is rarely seen in public now because it is a criminal offence, but partial stripping is still performed at festivals, private parties and funerals, people in the business say. "Some people like going to hostess clubs, so when they pass away their relatives arrange striptease to reflect their interests while they were alive," said Chiang Wan-yuan, Pei-ying's father and a 30-year veteran in the business. It is difficult to imagine a similar show going on outside a European village church, and some local critics have dismissed the practice, which emerged in the 1970s, as shocking and vulgar. Others, however, see it as a natural extension of a traditional folk culture lacking in the sharp separation of sex and religion often seen in other parts of the world. Marc Moskowitz, an anthropologist at the University of South Carolina, said the practice evolved out of the special Chinese concept of "hot and noisy", which brims with positive connotations. "In traditional Chinese and contemporary Taiwanese culture this signifies that for an event to be fun or noteworthy it must be full of noise and crowds," said Mr Moskowitz, who shot a documentary "Dancing for the Dead" in 2011. He added most people who watched his work appeared to enjoy it and recognise this practice as an "interesting and unique cultural phenomenon," which to his knowledge is only found in Taiwan. "As I watched these performances I came to appreciate the idea of celebrating someone's life to help assuage the feelings of grief," he said.

As the temple facade in the background changed colour from the fireworks lighting up the Taiwanese night sky, the show climaxed with pole-dancing and striptease in front of an audience consisting of men, women and children. "This is hard work but I need to make a living," said 18 year-old En En, out of breath after stripping for the crowd during the recent religious festival. En En had just earned Tw$3000 ($100) for her act, which began on stage, but ended as she mingled with the audience, letting men touch her for tips. Folk religion in Taiwan is a unique mixture of the spiritual and the earthly, and one of its most remarkable manifestations is the practice of hiring showgirls to perform at festivals, weddings, and even funerals. ((A dancer receives a tip during a temple festival in northern Taiwan The girls work on "electronic flower cars" - specially designed trucks equipped with light and sound equipment that can become a stage, allowing them to travel to performances often held in smaller cities and rural areas. "The groups attract crowds to our events and they perform for the gods and the spirits to seek blessings," said Chen Chung-hsien, an official at Wu Fu Temple, a Taoist landmark in north Taiwan's Taoyuan County. "They have become part of our religion and folk culture." At 26, Chiang Pei-ying is already a veteran performer with nearly 20 years of experience, travelling across Taiwan with her father and two sisters for their family business to entertain audiences - both alive and dead. Ms Chiang made her debut when she was in kindergarten because she liked singing and dancing on stage and has become a celebrity performer with her sisters, charging up to Tw$80,000 for a 20-minute show. She said she enjoys her line of work, even if she has to deal with some odd requests from customers such as walking around coffins and singing for the deceased at funerals.

'Bulletproof Vest' Man Arrested At Los Angeles Airport

A man has been arrested at Los Angeles International Airport who, officials say, was carrying weapons in his luggage and wearing a bulletproof vest. Yongda Huang Harris, a US citizen, had arrived from Japan and was due to board a flight to Boston when he was stopped. Border officials said a number of items were found including knives, handcuffs, body bags and a smoke bomb. He was charged with transporting hazardous items - an allegation relating to the smoke bomb. "He was detained by customs border protection because he was wearing a full ballistic vest with a trauma plate and knee pads and to them that was unusual," Commander Blake Chow of the Los Angeles police department said. "He had a myriad of items in his checked-in luggage and it raised a lot of suspicion." Mr Harris, a 28-year-old man from Boston, was also said to be wearing flame-resistant trousers. Other items found included a hatchet, a collapsible baton, a bio-hazard suit, a gas mask, leg irons and lead-filled truncheons. Officials said he had recently been living and working in Japan but was not co-operating with investigators attempting to question him. They also gave no explanation of how he was able to board his flight in Japan without raising suspicions.

The American agency that screens airline passengers says it followed proper procedure when it patted down a dying woman in what she described as an embarrassing and very public security check. Michelle Dunaj, 34, has terminal leukemia. She is hooked up to feeding tubes because of organ failure and carries saline bags with her. The Michigan woman was waiting in the security line at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Oct. 2, en route home from Hawaii from what she believed would be her final trip ever.

Dying Woman Embarrassed By Public Airport Pat-Down

Dunaj told the news channel that Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screeners made her pull up her shirt so they could check under her bandages, and that agents wouldn't grant her request for a private search, out of the view of other passengers. They also opened one of her medical bags, contaminating the saline fluid inside. But the security agency denied Dunaj's claims. In a statement issued Tuesday, the TSA said it has reviewed the surveillance video of the security check and has determined screening procedures were followed.

Suspect In Deadly Quebec House Fire To Appear In U.S. Court

Justin Bresaw, the man wanted in connection with a house fire and the deaths of three people in Amos, Que., was arrested in Florida He is set to appear in court to answer to a slew of charges stemming from his arrest in the U.S. Bresaw will face charges including burglary, battery of a law-enforcement officer and charges of resisting arrest in Florida, along with three counts of first-degree murder in Canada. It is unclear when he will be extradited back to Canada. Christine Coulombe, a spokeswoman for Quebec provincial police, said Sunday the extradition process is underway to bring him back to Canada. That process could be held up by the charges Bresaw now faces in Florida. "We don't know how long it will take," Coulombe said. Bresaw was on the run since September 17, when three bodies were found in a burned out house where he used to rent a room in the town of Amos in Quebec's Abitibi region, about 500 kilometres north of Montreal. Officer Dave Northway of the Tallahassee Police Department said Bresaw was arrested at 4:30 a.m. after an altercation with a police officer. Sergeant Sam Gereg found the suspect using a laptop computer behind a small church at around 1:30 a.m. The suspect told Sgt. Gereg he was called "John Colman," but the officer thought the spelling was off and decided to run an identity check. Bresaw then tried to run away from the officer but was held back. "The man started to try to get away," Northway said. "He took a step or two. Sergeant Gereg got a hold of mister

he thought was Mr. Colman at this time but turned out to be Mr. Bresaw and they got into... a very good, hard, long fight." According to Northway, Bresaw said "you'll have to kill me" while he was fighting with Sgt. Gereg. "Mr. Bresaw was trying to get a hold of Sgt. Gereg belt which has all of his weapons on it," Northway said. Three-hour police hunt Gereg fell during the fight, struck a metal post and broke his nose during the fight, Northway said, and Bresaw ran away. Sgt. Gereg then called for back-up and with the help of a helicopter, other agencies and search dogs, found Bresaw three hours later hiding underneath a house. Bresaw was taken into custody after suffering a bite from a police dog, Northway said. After his arrest, police determined that Bresaw was wanted by Quebec authorities and by Interpol. Bresaw is being held at the Leon County Sheriff's Office, where he is facing charges of resisting an officer with violence, resisting an officer without violence and being a fugitive. Bresaw is suspected of having killed Ren Deschtelets, Diane Duhaime and Jean-Guy Labelle before setting fire to the house they were in. He may face charges of first degree murder, along with arson, once he is extradited. Authorities say Bresaw was spotted in the west Ottawa neighbourhood of Kanata North in mid-September before issuing a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest. Sret du Qubec spokesman Const. Pierre Tremblay said Bresaw was seen near the Amos home before the fire started. He had been renting a room in the basement of the home in Amos prior to the fire. Police had been on Bresaw's trail since last month. On Sept. 20, three days after the fire, a stolen car allegedly driven by Bresaw was found in a wooded area near Havelock, Ont., northeast of Peterborou

A lawyer who successfully challenged the B.C. government on spiritual access for an inmate is hammering the Harper government's decision to nix nonChristian chaplains in federal prisons. Lisa Kerr served as the co-counsel to a B.C. prisoner denied access to an aboriginal spiritual adviser while he served less than two years in three provincial jails. The adviser was on staff but was not granted to inmate Travis Kelly. In July 2011, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal ruled in favour of Kelly. The quasi-judicial body, which reviews human rights complaints, found he had been discriminated against because of unequal access. "Section 15 of the charter and Section 3 of the Canadian Human Rights Act both require prisoners have to have equal access regardless of their religion," Kerr said. "The case that I did ... was a provincial case. This is a federal agency. There is no reason to believe the law is any different." Kerr's criticism comes after the government signaled a policy shift

following a review of the federal chaplaincy program. The feds said the review was completed to "ensure taxpayer dollars are being used wisely and appropriately." Federal Liberals have criticized the government's decision to cut nonChristian chaplains as a violation of the charter. The NDP has also slammed the change. Candice Bergen, parliamentary secretary to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, said non-Christian prisoners will continue to have access to chaplains on a "voluntary basis." The government also said there are about 2,500 volunteers who currently provide religious services within the correctional system. Kerr said she has concerns about how the volunteer system will operate and cites the importance of exposing prisoners to religious services. "There have been many, many prisoners who have encountered religious life for the first time while incarcerated and who have found a spiritual and moral side of themselves," Kerr said.

An opposition MP is outraged after the federal government awarded a contract to produce Canadian passport covers to an Ottawa-based company - which then sub-contracted the work to the Netherlands. Passport Canada awarded the contract to produce the new ePassport covers to Canadian Bank Note after a competitive bidding process last year. Canadian Bank Note is headquartered in Ottawa and has plants and offices in nine other locations around the globe. When the company sub-contracted the work to a firm in the Netherlands, NDP MP Linda Duncan criticized the decision, accusing the Conservatives of using Canadian symbols for political gain. "They're waving the flag, but in the meantime they're undercutting Canada by outsourcing the manufacturing of our most important icon," she said. Previously to Canadian Bank Note, Columbia Finishing Mills had produced the plastic covers for about 30 years. The firm, located in Cornwall, Ont., will stop making the covers this spring. Company president Brian Lynch said the lost contract would cut about $1 million from the company's bottom line. Columbia Finishing Mills sales manager Dan Ploure told the media the company was surprised to hear that being Canadian would have no bearing on the bidding process. "We were told from the beginning when tender came out that Canadian content had no bearing," he said. "I was very, very shocked about that." The company says it will have to lay off staff as a result of the lost business. The decision has infuriated Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce President Rick Shaver, who believes all parts of the passport, should be Canadian-made.

Canadian Company Out Sources New E.Coli Case Confirmed In B.C. As Passport Covers To Netherlands Xl Foods Recall Reaches Hong Kong
"Every Canadian has a passport, we carry that, we travel with that, and it was made in Cornwall," he said. "Now it's going to an overseas company to make. What's next, our currency?" In response to the lost contract, Shaver penned an open letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper urging him to overturn the decision. "The Chamber's concern focuses on three issues with respect to the passport: Canadian pride, economic impact, and job erosion," wrote Shaver. "The Canadian passport is a document respected around the world and is carried with pride by millions of Canadians. While many of these passport holders will likely be unaware of the government's intention, the Chamber believes they would be deeply troubled to learn that the document's cover has been 'sold-out' to a foreign country where it will now be manufactured." In the letter, addressed to Harper and local Conservative MP Guy Lauzon, Shaver writes that while the government has always touted job creation in Canada as one of its central priorities, its actions would indicate otherwise. "Your intention to outsource the passport covers appears to contradict the intent of those discussions," Shaver wrote. Meanwhile, Shaver says Columbia Finishing Mills is taking steps to make its contract bid more competitive, but that the government has not responded to its overtures. "The Cornwall Chamber, speaking for the business sector at large and Columbia Finishing Mills in particular, urgently requests that your government take the necessary steps to rescind this foreign contract and invest instead in Canada, Cornwall, and the local firm," he wrote. A new case of E.coli in British Columbia has been linked to the XL Foods beef recall as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency prepares to evaluate the Alberta meat processing plant at the centre of the tainted meat scare. Meanwhile, meat products originating from the XL Foods plant have been recalled in Hong Kong, the latest country to be affected by the largest beef recall in Canadian history. The CFIA confirmed Monday that a case of E. coli on Vancouver Island is the same strain that was observed in meat products from the Brooks, Alta. XL Foods Inc. plant. The CFIA will begin an inspection of the temporarily shuttered plant Tuesday to determine if it has implemented a number of controls and procedures to improve food safety. During a teleconference Monday, Dr. Gregory Taylor of the Public Health Agency of Canada said the E.coli patient in B.C. has fully recovered after contracting E. coli 0157:H7, the same strain found at the XL Food plant and in 10 other people across Canada -- seven in Alberta, two in Quebec and one in Newfoundland. CFIA officials said inspectors will now evaluate the company's readiness to reopen and check that a number of actions to improve the plant's maintenance and sanitation have been made. Based on the findings of their evaluation, a recommendation will be made to senior CFIA officials on what the next steps in the XL Foods investigation should be, said Dr. Harpreet Kochhar of the CFIA. Kochhar said the evaluation comes after XL Foods contacted the CFIA in writing and communicated their readiness to resume operations. Kochhar stressed that there was no timeline or expected date on when the plant will reopen. He also said the plant's license will remain suspended during the evaluation process and that all XL Foods products remain under the agency's control. In an online statement, the Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety confirmed last

It could take up to a week to see one If you get into a crash, you could be waiting a while to sit down with an ICBC claims adjuster. There will be more service cutbacks starting Friday. The union representing workers says they are turning back the clock and will be doing the same amount of work they did in 1996. David Black with COPE 378 says their workload is being cut in half. "What it means is that... it might take longer for people to get to see an adjuster in the first place," he explains. "Soon, people will notice that instead of getting to see an adjuster the next day, it's going to be a couple of days or a week before they can see someone," he adds. week that some raw beef from the plant had been brought into the country and supplied to several local distributors to sell. The centre suspended all imports of XL products made on or after Aug. 24. The news of the Hong Kong recall came as the U.S. significantly increased its tally of the number of products that were imported from the XL Foods plant. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement that it has nearly tripled initial estimates. "Previously, FSIS reported that approximately 890,000 pounds of boneless beef trim were received by U.S. firms from XL Foods, Inc.," said the statement. "After conducting effectiveness checks, FSIS now estimates that approximately 1.1 million pounds of trim and approximately 1.4 million pounds of primal and sub-primal cuts used to produce steaks, roasts, mechanically tenderized steaks and roasts, and ground beef were received by U.S. firms." That works out to over 1,340,000 kilograms of beef from the XL Foods Inc. plant. It was U.S. border inspectors that first discovered the presence of E. colicontaminated beef in early September. That led to what has now become the largest ever Canadian food recall, with roughly 1,700 products now on the list. On Sunday, 24 new items were added to the CFIA's list of recalled products. The lengthy list recently expanded to include products such as steaks, lean ground beef, roasts, sausages and oxtail. Stores throughout Canada have been identified by the CFIA as sellers of the recalled products, including major grocers such as Superstore, Sobeys, No Frills, Quality Foods, Metro and Walmart. However, the CFIA warned that the recall also includes unlabelled and unbranded beef products that are not identified on the agency's website. The agency noted that these products are typically sold at smaller retailers, local meat markets and butcher shops.

No one in this world can rightfully claim that he or she is the perfect parent. Raising a child can be very staggering. It can be especially difficult if you have more than one child to bring up or if you are a single parent. You are bound to make some mistakes in time. You probably are going to lose your temper over your childrens misbehaviors more than often. These could lead you to hurt your children and say things you do not really mean. Learn from these tips for better parenting then and work hard to become a better parent as much as you can. Understand why your children are misbehaving. This is the essence of any tips for better parenting. Once you know the reasons why your child goes against the rules, you are closer to becoming the good parent that you want to become. In most cases, children tend to misbehave because they lack your attention. If being good does not earn them your affections, they misbehave so that you get to notice them. To avoid that, spend as much time you can with your children. Play with them, walk with them, read to them, and more. In other cases, children break the rules because they want to test out the limits imposed on them and the boundaries they have to function within. Any tips for better parenting will advise you that a physical punishment is not the way to deal with things. Instead, discipline your kids

Tips For Better Parenting

through redirecting them. If certain misbehavior is prohibited, provide a child the behaviour that is accepted. For example, peeing in bed is prohibited. Explain to your child properly that peeing in the bathroom is the right way. You need patience for this because it would probably take time before your kids understand the rules. Among the many good tips for better parenting is to dole out punishment. You do not do this however by spanking or slapping your kid. You do not also do this by shouting and calling your children bad names. You talk to them instead and make them see the consequences of their actions. If your kid neglects to make up his bed, punish him by not letting him get out of the house until he makes his bed. These days though, the traditional punishment for behaviour such as grounding and removal of toys are becoming less effective. Kids are becoming cleverer. If this is the case, you have to find out new ways to impose the rules without physical and emotional damage. Always tell your children that you love them and they are important to you. If they behave properly, praise them and treat them out once in a while. If you have followed the above tips for better parenting but still feel angry at your children all the time, you probably need professional help. Talk to parenting counselors. You can also join groups that aim to become better parents. Go and have a talk with your priest, your pastor, or your doctor.

Botox Offers Effective Treatment For Urinary Urgency Incontinence A new study has found that botox urinary urgency incontinence. One
(onabotulinum toxin-A) injections to the bladder are as effective as medication for treating urinary urgency incontinence in women, but the injection is twice as likely to completely resolve symptoms. These findings were reported by a National Institutes of Health clinical trials network including Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine (SSOM). Urgency incontinence is urinary incontinence with a strong or sudden need to urinate. Traditionally, this condition has been treated with drugs known as anticholinergics, which reduce bladder contractions by targeting the bladder muscle through the nervous system. However, many women who take anticholinergic medications experience side effects, including constipation, dry mouth and dry eyes. Prior to this study, we reserved onabotulinum toxin-A for women who did not respond to traditional oral medication. However, this research supports the use of either of these approaches as appropriate first-line treatment in women, said Linda Brubaker, MD, MS, co-author and dean, SSOM. Women are twice as likely to experience urinary incontinence as men. This study evaluated 241 women with

group of participants received sixmonths of daily oral medication plus a saline injection. The other group received one injection of onabotulinum toxin-A (Botox) plus a daily oral placebo capsule. At the beginning of the study, patients had an average of five urgency incontinence episodes a day. The average reduction in episodes over six months was 3.4 with oral medication and 3.3 with onabotulinum toxin-A. The proportion of women with complete resolution of urgency incontinence was 13 percent with anticholinergics and 27 percent with onabotulinum toxin-A. Quality of life improved in both groups without significant differences. More participants in the anticholinergic group reported dry mouth (46 percent versus 31 percent) while the onabotulinum toxin-A group had more urinary tract infections (28 percent versus 15 percent) and more incomplete bladder emptying, requiring temporary bladder catheterization (5 percent versus 0 percent). These results will help doctors weigh treatment options for women and make recommendations based on individual patient needs, said Dr. Brubaker, who is in the Division of Female Pelvic and Reconstructive Surgery, Loyola University Health System.

Eating Your Greens Best Way To Prevent Cancer

Eating broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage at least once a week could significantly lower your risk of developing several cancers. The research supports earlier findings about the importance of diet in cancer prevention. Previous studies have shown that a nutrient found in cruciferous vegetables from the brassica family which include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, sprouts, watercress and radish can kill cancer cells and offer hope of new drugs. Sulforaphane, which is found at high levels particularly in broccoli, has been shown to destroy prostate tumours while leaving normal cells healthy. The new study found that compared with people who had no cruciferous vegetables, men and women who ate greens at least once a week cut their risk of mouth cancer by almost a fifth (17 per cent), as reported. The results also showed the vegetables cut the risk of oesophageal cancer by more than a quarter (28 per cent), bowel and breast cancer by nearly a fifth (17 per cent) and kidney cancer by almost a third (32 per cent).

Tomatoes Are 'Stroke Preventers'

A diet rich in tomatoes may reduce the risk of having a stroke, according to researchers in Finland. They were investigating the impact of lycopene - a bright red chemical found in tomatoes, peppers and water-melons. A study of 1,031 men, published in the journal Neurology, showed those with the most lycopene in their bloodstream were the least likely to have a stroke. The Stroke Association called for more research into why lycopene seemed to have this effect. The levels of lycopene in the blood were assessed at the beginning of the study, which then followed the men for the next 12 years. They were split into four groups based on the amount of lycopene in their blood. There were 25 strokes in the 258 men in the low lycopene group and 11 strokes out of the 259 men in the high lycopene group. The study said the risk of stroke was cut by 55% by having a diet rich in lycopene. 'Major reduction' Dr Jouni Karppi, from the University of Eastern Finland in Kuopio, said:

"This study adds to the evidence that a diet high in fruits and vegetables is associated with a lower risk of stroke. "The results support the recommendation that people get more than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, which would likely lead to a major reduction in the number of strokes worldwide, according to previous research." He said lycopene acted as an antioxidant, reduced inflammation and prevented blood clotting. Dr Clare Walton, from the Stroke Association, said: "This study suggests that an antioxidant which is found in foods such as tomatoes, red peppers and water-melons could help to lower our stroke risk. "However, this research should not deter people from eating other types of fruit and vegetables as they all have health benefits and remain an important part of a staple diet. "More research is needed to help us understand why the particular antioxidant found in vegetables such as tomatoes could help keep our stroke risk down."

Heavy caffeinated coffee drinkers are at increased risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma, the leading cause of secondary glaucoma worldwide, according to a new study. The study is the first to examine the link between caffeinated coffee and exfoliation glaucoma in a U.S. based population. Scandinavian populations have the highest frequencies of exfoliation syndrome and glaucoma, said author, Jae Hee Kang, ScD, of Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women``s Hospital in Boston, Mass. Because Scandinavian populations also have the highest consumption of caffeinated coffee in the world, and our research group has previously found that greater caffeinated coffee intake was associated with increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma, we conducted this study to evaluate whether the risk of exfoliation glaucoma or glaucoma suspect may be different by coffee consumption, he stated. The study was composed of two cohorts: 78,977 women from the Nurses Health Study (NHS) and 41,202 men from the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS) who were at least 40 years of age, did not have glaucoma and reported undergoing eye examinations from 1980 (for NHS participants) and 1986 (for HPFS participants) to 2008. The research team used questionnaires to obtain and validate the consumption

3 Or More Cups Of Caffeinated Coffee Daily Linked To Vision Loss

of beverages containing caffeine and reviewed medical records to determine incident cases of exfoliation glaucoma, which contributes to elevated pressure sufficient enough to damage the optic nerve, or exfoliation glaucoma suspect that have milder or only suspect optic nerve damage. A meta-analysis of the two cohorts showed that, compared to abstainers, participants who drank three cups or more of caffeinated coffee daily were at an increased risk of developing exfoliation glaucoma or glaucoma suspect. The researchers did not find associations with consumption of other caffeinated products, such as soda, tea, chocolate or decaffeinated coffee. The results also showed that women with a family history of glaucoma were at an increased risk. Kang, along with his colleagues, report that this study represents a much needed effort to better understand the causes of exfoliation glaucoma, which are largely unknown. Because this is the first study to evaluate the association between caffeinated coffee and exfoliation glaucoma in a U.S. population, confirmation of these results in other populations would be needed to lend more credence to the possibility that caffeinated coffee might be a modifiable risk factor for glaucoma, said Kang. It may also lead to research into other dietary or lifestyle factors as risk factors, he added.

A protein deficiency may cause the early onset of dementia, researchers have found. They say the results lay the foundation for therapies that one day may benefit those who suffer from the illness that wreak havoc on the brain, as reported Tuesday. Using animal models, they found a protein deficiency may be linked to front temporal dementia -- a form of early-onset dementia that is similar to Alzheimers disease. FTD is a fatal disease that destroys cells, or neurons, that comprise the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. Early symptoms of FTD include personality changes, such as increased

erratic or compulsive behaviour. Sufferers later experience difficulties speaking and reading, and often suffer from long-term memory loss. The study, led by Robert Farese, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, offers new hope in the fight against this and other related conditions. Farese and his team showed how a protein called progranulin prevents a class of cells called microglia from becoming "hyperactive". FTD is usually diagnosed between the ages of 40 and 65, with death occurring within two to 10 years after diagnosis. No drugs exist to slow, halt or reverse its progression

Asha Bhosles daughter Varsha Bhosle committed suicide at her residence in Mumbai Monday. She shot herself to death at Mumbai's Peddar road-based residence Prabhu Kunj. She was a divorcee. She shot on her head and it is not yet known from where she has got the weapon. Varsha shot herself at the Prabhu Kunj building in Peddar Road, the same building in which singer and her aunt Lata Mangeshkar also lives. During the incident, Asha Bhosle was not in India. She was in Singapore for some concerts. Her aunt Lata Mangeshkar was also not in her residence. Varsha was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead. Body of Varsha has

Never in my wildest dreams did I think Id one day be Dr Hema Malini, she said. I keep asking myself why me? Why all these honours for me when I havent achieved anything much. When the Singhania University called me up I asked them why they had selected me. After they convinced me I realised that I have also done something. My dancing has been a substantial extension of my chosen vocation. Hema has another honour to be proud of. The Norwegian government recently released a stamp with her face on it. At this Hema Malini was heard

been taken to JJ hospital for post mortem. Varsha had a troubled married life. She was divorced from freelance sports writer Hemant Kenkre and reportedly had a history of depression. Also in 2008 Varsha tried to kill herself by taking overdose of sleeping pills but was later saved by doctors. Born in 1956, Varsha was a freelance journalist who had worked with leading dailies as a columnist. She also worked as a playback singer in Hindi and Marathi movies and also appeared in concerts with her mother. She wrote columns for Rediff, The Sunday Observer and for Gentleman magazine in 1993. She also wrote a little for the Times of India.

In Bollywood, apparently no age is too young or too old for actors, which is why were soon going to see Govinda romancing an 18-year-old newcomer, Raika (who apparently has no surname)! It is a little disturbing to imagine that this decision was taken by famous filmmaker Pahlaj Nihalani who has given Govinda some of the biggest hits of his career like 'Shola Aur Shabnam' and 'Ankhen'. Their hit jodi was as good as that of David Dhawan and Govinda. But just trying to imagine a 50-odd-year-old Govinda grooving to another song which makes no sense, with this teenager is repulsive! This borders on creepy; its quite difficult to be all right with Govinda

Nihalanis film also stars Sunny Deol, who is also in his 50s! One did not expect this from a respectable director who has launched people like Neelam Kothari and the late Divya Bharti. Raika is also supposed to have a tantalising swimsuit scene in the movie. Is it really surprising at this juncture? Now we know where the terms dirty old men comes from!

Actor Tusshar Kapoor, who has mostly dabbled in comedy films, including the popular Golmaal series, believes that a shift to action with Shootout at Wadala is a big challenge for him. "I have not done too much action, so Shootout At Wadala will be another big challenge for me and it will be interesting for me to see how the audiences accept me in that role," the 36-year-old said in an interview. Tusshar is known for playing a mute character in the Golmaal series. But he considers an action-based role to be tougher. "More than playing a mute character, I think doing an out-and-out actionoriented role is a bigger change from what I have done and a shocker for the audiences," he added. However, Tusshar is open to diverse roles and something even akin to Barfi!.

Action Is Challenging: Tusshar Kapoor

"It depends on the kind of offers that I get. Let's see, I can't predict the future, so I hope I get challenging roles like Golmaal, like Barfi! and get to play such diverse characters," Tusshar said. Being directed by Sanjay Gupta, Shootout at Wadala is slated to release in May 2013.

And that is the reason so many relationships are breaking today," Vidya says. "I was single for a long time and was asked about it. I would say I enjoy being single. Also maybe because I led a full professional life, I didn't feel the pressure much. One must be free to choose," she said.

Salman Is The Big Hero Of Small Screen Salman Khan aka Sallu Bhai is puts them together in a confined
having a great run at the Bollywood box office. His back to back hits, Bodyguard, Dabangg and Ek Tha Tiger have already established him as the undisputed number one of the silver screen. It seems the actor has successfully brought his charm to the small screen as well. He is hosting the sixth season of the popular reality show Big Boss. Earlier he had charged about Rs. 3 crore for each episode but this season it is a whooping Rs. 4 crore for each episode. This is much higher than what Amir Khan charged for each episode of Satyamev Jayate. However, the producers of Big Boss are not complaining, they are pleased as punch, as the star value of Salman Khan is pushing the TRP of the program through the roof. It seems the viewers love Salman and his antics, and can never have enough of him. This is the third consecutive time that the star is hosting the show and he has as always successfully retained the audience base for the program. The reality show Big Boss selects contestants from different walks of life (and a bit well known faces) and

house. The day to day activities and the interactions of the contestants with each other are shown. The show gives the contestants an opportunity to showcase their personalities and to let the world learn about them. It seems, particularly Salman Khan also likes the concept of the show. An insider from the show quoted as Salman relates to Big Boss because of the concept and its appeal. He appreciates the fact that the show allows people who are usually misunderstood to prove themselves in the house. The public too loves watching his real side and he gets a chance to meet people from all walks of life. The fact that he insisted that the show become familyoriented and be aired at 9 pm, shows his involvement and interest in it. Kudos to Salman, for his wonderful charisma and success on the small screen. We sure hope that the season six of the reality show becomes as big a hit as its predecessors. Well, the current set of fire brand contestants in the sixth edition is sure to keep the fireworks burning on the show and the audience glued to their seats.

At The Movies
Dark comedies can be a delicious romp. Take an all star cast and put them in a quirky crime flick full of layered fun and you wind up with Seven Psychopaths. Like the title suggest, this black farce from Alliance Films clocks in at 109 minutes and is now running its course at The Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Cineplex Odeon films around B.C. Being a director and writer can be daunting task. Martin McDonagh pulls off an intrguing tale set in amodern west coast American city full of lively characters. Part Pulp Fiction part Seven this tale revolves around a series of low lifes in the best Get Shorty tradition. Snappy dialogue and offbeat situations abound in this story that features a group of veteran actors getting down and dirty and "camping" it up big time. Lead character Marty is a fledlging writer. Sam Rockwell gushes forth with pent-up exuberance as Billy, a real likeable low life whose hobby is kidnapping dogs. Somehow this pair of well-meaning nitwits wind up "investigating" serial killers" or some other maniacs roving the landscape. Little does Marty know that Billy's normal day job would provide lots of food for fodder in a way that may possibly open up his considerable writer's block - or just add to the pain and his open wounds. A mistep here, a misstep there can prove dangerous in any line of work and in anyone's life. Poor Billy makes the mistake of "accidentally" taking the beloved dog of a criminal named Charlie who has a real attachment to his fabled pooch. Actress Rekha turns 58 on Wednesday. Her real name was Banurekha Ganeshan, which she shortened to Rekha. Rekha started her career as a child actress in a Telugu movie Rangula Ratnam. She was not interested in acting, but the financial problems in her family made her take up acting as a career. She was born to Tamil actor Gemini Ganeshan and actress Pushpavalli. However Gemini declined to be her father. Her first successful movie was a Kannada film, Goa dalli CID 999, which was released in 1969. In the same year she moved to Bombay for a better career. But she was very vulnerable and men took benefit of that. Her first Hindi movie Sawan Bhado was a successful movie. Similarly, the ones that followed were Rampur ka Lakshman, Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye and Kahani Kismat Ki. But she was seen a plump, dusky heroine. Much against the likes of her time like Hema Malini and Rakhi, she was sometimes called the Ugly duckling . She then took upon herself. She managed to come out with a slimmer figure. She was offered the movie Umrao Jaan in 1981. She said that she could see herself in the character, it depicted a girl was kidnapped and sold to a brothel. She later went on to become a famous courtesan and poetess. The film was based on Mirza Hadi Ruswas 1905 novel Umrao Jaan Ada. Rekha gave a wonderful performance in the movie. She was also awarded the national Filmfare awards for

the best actress for that role. She married industrialist Mukesh Agarwal in 1990, but he committed suicide, one year after their marriage. Another important part of her career was her association with Amitabh Bachchan. She first worked with him in the movie Do Anjanne. It was directed by Dulal Guha. It depicted the story of a greedy wife. The movie was a major hit. Later she also worked with Amitabh in the movie Mukadar ka Sikanadar. She played the role of a courtesan in that movie too. The last pairing of them was in the movie Silsila. Rekha played the love interest of Amitabh in that movie. Their off-screen romance was also very much in the news. Later Rekha acted in some other films like Koi mil Gaya ..and Krrish. Her next upcoming movie is Krrish 3. Incidentally, Amitabhs birthday was (11th October) but he had his birthday party the same evening.

Amitabh Bachchan's family organised a big birthday bash on Wednesday to celebrate his 70th birthday. And for the first time Aishwarya Rai Bachchan did not try to hide Aaradhya Bachchan. Avoid Joint Bank Accounts

Joint bank accounts can have their benefits, but they can also end in tears.
Latest figures show more people are choosing to open up shared accounts, allowing couples to share the responsibilities involved in managing money. A research has found 22 per cent of account holders have a joint bank account only, while 19 per cent maintain their own account while also having a joint account. There are some important things to think about before opening a joint bank account. How you manage your money depends on whether you want to handle it as an individual. Where joint accounts really work is where you have joint expenses or goals. Joe 28, who works in the banking industry and his partner Annabel, 23, who is a travel agent, opened their second joint bank account last month. "We are trying to save money and pay off debt. We bought a car and are also paying off debts from travelling overseas," Joe says. "It works out the best this way; we live off my income and save Annabel's wage." Joe says sharing accounts has been a good decision for them, after opening their first joint account a few years ago. Joint accounts don't work well when couples are not open with each other about spending habits. It doesn't work when you don't have any agreement on how the account is going to be used. One person might be saving for a goal and another person might be using it for entertainment. One in five people don't want joint accounts because they are worried how their partner is going to use the money, or they can't control their spending. Some couples are reluctant to open shared accounts because it can get messy if the relationship ends. ANZ head of product management deposits and mortgages says 20 per cent of their retail deposit accounts are held jointly. Joint accounts provide a convenient way for couples and partners to deposit, withdraw and pay bills with shared funds, and it reduces the need to manage multiple accounts. The key to managing joint accounts is to ensure there's complete trust and open communication between account holders at all times. Couples need to be comfortable with shared access to deposits, but can opt to specify whether both account holders must authorize withdrawals.

History Almost all parliamentary general elections between 1853 and 1996 were held under the first past the post voting system. The elections since 1930 have been dominated by two political parties, National and Labour. Since 1996, a form of proportional representation called Mixed Member Proportional (MMP) has been used. Under the MMP system each person has two votes; one is for the seventy electoral seats (including seven reserved for Mori), and the other is for a party. The remaining fifty seats are assigned so that representation in parliament reflects the party vote, although a party has to win one electoral seat or 5 percent of the total party vote before it is eligible for these seats. Between March 2005 and August 2006 New Zealand became the only country in the world in which all the highest offices in the land (Head of State, GovernorGeneral, Prime Minister, Speaker and Chief Justice) were occupied simultaneously by women. New Zealand is identified as one of the world's most stable and wellgoverned nations. As of 2011, the country was ranked 5th in the strength of its democratic institutions and 1st in government transparency and lack of corruption. New Zealand has a high level of civic participation, with 79% voter turnout during the most recent elections, compared to an OECD average of 72%. Furthermore, 67% of New Zealanders say they trust their political institutions, far higher than the OECD average of 56%. Foreign relations and the military Early colonial New Zealand allowed the British Government to determine external trade and be responsible for foreign policy. The 1923 and 1926 Imperial Conferences decided that New Zealand should be allowed to negotiate their own political treaties, with the first successful commercial treaty being with Japan in 1928. Despite this independence New Zealand readily followed Britain in declaring war on Germany on September 3, 1939 with then Prime Minister Michael Savage proclaiming, "Where she goes, we go; where she stands, we stand." In 1951 the United Kingdom became increasingly focused on its European interests while New Zealand joined Australia and the United States in the ANZUS security treaty. The influence of the United States on New Zealand weakened following protests over the Vietnam War, the refusal of the United States to admonish France after

the sinking of the Rainbow Warrior, disagreements over environmental and agricultural trade issues and New Zealand's nuclear-free policy. Despite the USA's suspension of ANZUS obligations the treaty remained in effect between New Zealand and Australia, whose foreign policy has followed a similar historical trend. Close political contact is maintained between the two countries, with free trade agreements and travel arrangements that allow citizens to visit, live and work in both countries without restrictions. Currently over 500,000 New Zealanders live in Australia and 65,000 Australians live in New Zealand. New Zealand has a strong presence among the Pacific Island countries. A large proportion of New Zealand's aid goes to these countries and many Pacific people migrate to New Zealand for employment. Permanent migration is regulated under the 1970 Samoan Quota Scheme and the 2002 Pacific Access Category, which allow up to 1,100 Samoan nationals and up to 750 other Pacific Islanders respectively to become permanent New Zealand residents each year. A seasonal workers scheme for temporary migration was introduced in 2007 and in 2009 about 8,000 Pacific Islanders were employed under it. New Zealand is involved in the Pacific Islands Forum, AsiaPacific Economic Cooperation and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Regional Forum (including the East Asia Summit). New Zealand is also a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations, and the Five Powers Defence Arrangements The New Zealand Defence Force has three branches: the Royal New Zealand Navy, the New Zealand Army and the Royal New Zealand Air Force. New Zealand's national defence needs are modest because of the unlikelihood of direct attack, although it does have a global presence. The country fought in both world wars, with notable campaigns in Gallipoli, Crete, and Cassino. The Gallipoli campaign played an important part in fostering New Zealand's and strengthened the ANZAC tradition it shares with Australia. According to Mary Edmond-Paul, "World War I had left scars on New Zealand society, with nearly 18,500 in total dying as a result of the war, more than 41,000 wounded, and others affected emotionally, out of an overseas fighting force of about 103,000 and a population of just over a million." New Zealand also played key parts in the naval and the Battle

of Britain air campaign. During World War II, the United States had more than 400,000 American military personnel stationed in New Zealand. In addition to Vietnam and the two world wars, New Zealand fought in the Korean War, the Second Boer War, the Malayan Emergency, the Gulf War and the Afghanistan War. It has contributed forces to several regional and global peacekeeping missions, such as those in Cyprus, Somalia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Sinai, Angola, Cambodia, the IranIraq border, Bougainville, East Timor, and the Solomon Islands. New Zealand also sent a unit of army engineers to help rebuild Iraqi infrastructure for one year during the Iraq War. New Zealand ranks 8th in the Center for Global Development's 2011 Commitment to Development Index, which ranks the world's most developed countries on their dedication to policies that benefit poorer nations. New Zealand is considered the second most peaceful country in the world according to the 2012 Global Peace Index. Local government and external territories The early European settlers divided New Zealand into provinces, which had a degree of autonomy. Because of financial pressures and the desire to consolidate railways, education, land sales and other policies, government was centralised and the provinces were abolished in 1876. As a result, New Zealand now has no separately represented subnational entities. The provinces are remembered in and sporting rivalries. Since 1876, various councils have administered local areas under legislation determined by the central government. In 1989, the government reorganised local government into the current two-tier structure of regional councils and territorial authorities. That existed in 1975; have now been consolidated into 67 territorial authorities and 11 regional councils. the regional councils' role is to regulate "the natural environment with particular emphasis on resource management", while territorial authorities are responsible for sewage, water, local roads, building consents and other local matters. Five of the territorial

councils are unitary authorities and also act as regional councils. The territorial authorities consist of 13 city councils, 53 district councils, and the Chatham Islands Council. While officially the Chatham Islands Council is not a unitary authority, it undertakes many functions of a regional council. Geography New Zealand is made up of two main islands and a number of smaller islands, located near the centre of the water hemisphere. The main North and South Islands are separated by the Cook Strait, 22 kilometres (14 mi) wide at its narrowest point. Besides the North and South Islands, the five largest inhabited islands are Stewart Island, the Chatham Islands, Great Barrier Island (in the Hauraki Gulf), d'Urville Island (in the Marlborough Sounds) and Waiheke Island (about 22 km (14 mi) from central Auckland). The country's islands lie between latitudes 29 and 53S, and longitudes 165 and 176E. New Zealand is long (over 1,600 kilometres (990 mi) along its northnorth-east axis) and narrow (a maximum width of 400 kilometres (250 mi)), with approximately 15,134 km (9,404 mi) of coastline and a total land area of 268,021 square kilometres (103,483 sq mi) Because of its far-flung outlying islands and long coastline, the country has extensive marine resources. Its Exclusive Economic Zone, one of the largest in the world, covers more than 15 times its land area. The South Island is the largest land mass of New Zealand, and is divided along its length by the Southern Alps. There are 18 peaks over 3,000 metres (9,800 ft), the highest of which is Aoraki/Mount Cook at 3,754 metres (12,316 ft). Fiordland's steep mountains and deep fiords record the extensive ice age glaciation of this south-western corner of the South Island. The North Island is less mountainous but is marked by volcanism. The highly active Taupo volcanic zone has formed a large volcanic plateau, punctuated by the North Island's highest mountain, Mount Ruapehu (2,797 metres (9,177 ft)). The plateau also hosts the country's largest lake, Lake Taupo, nestled in the caldera of one of the world's most active super volcanoes.

The Ford Escape has been a fixture on the American automotive landscape--in part because it's been around for eleven years in essentially the same form, and in other part because that form looked very much like the time-honored, firstgeneration Ford Explorer. All that changes without much visible regret with the 2013 Escape, the new crossover that arrives in showrooms in June. Completely new, derived from the family of components that brought you the Ford Focus, the new Escape delivers something very nearly unimaginable, given its heritage--an athletic look that's authenticated by deft road manners. In escaping its own past, Ford's compact crossover turns first to a trio of four-cylinders to replace its former four- and six-cylinder engines and the much-loved but discontinued Ford Escape Hybrid. The base engine's a carryover 2.5-liter four meant for fleets, while the mainstream choice is a 178-horsepower, 1.6-liter turbo four with straight-line acceleration competitive with its chief rivals, the Honda CR-V and four-cylinder Toyota RAV4. At the peak of power is a 2.0-liter turbo four with 240 hp, estimated at 0-60 mph in under 8.0 seconds. All versions come with a six-speed automatic; all are estimated at more than 30 mpg in highway fuel economy. On the Escape Titanium we drove, ride and handling were the ideal counterparts for the turbo's dartlike power; we can't think of a single compact crossover that steers with more precision or tamps down ride motions as smartly as the Escape, except maybe the 155-hp Mazda CX-5. The performance pairs well with the Escape's new track suit. The runningshoe styling only wears thin at the

front, where the skinny grille and gaping air inlets need to find some common ground and call a truce. The cockpit has its fair share of grey glossy plastic and tangential styling themes; on the balance, it's exciting, not chaotic. The Escape's larger than before, but passenger space isn't changed much. An inch of room in front is now granted to the folks in back. The seats are slimmed down and firmed up, which may not be everyone's taste; we're in their camp, fans of the long-distance support they offer. The cargo hold's larger, and the back seat folds and flips down its own headrests for better storage space--and the new hands-free tailgate option opens and closes the hatch at the swing of a foot. Other available features include an improved but still complex MyFord Touch; a navigation system; HD and satellite radio; Bluetooth with audio streaming; pushbutton start; leather seating; all-wheel drive, with or without a 3,500-pound-rated towing package; and a panoramic sunroof. With Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as well as four-star overall ratings (with five stars for side impact) from the federal government, the 2013 Escape has impressive safety-although it's not quite class-leading, if you read directly from test results. The Honda CR-V, for instance, manages Top Safety Pick status plus five-star federal results. Prices range from $23,295 for the Escape S to $31,195 for the Escape Titanium. In that respect, the 2013 Ford Escape isn't all that different from the model that came before it. In every other way, it's an Escape in name only-for all the right reasons.

Cancer is a disease that starts in our cells. Our bodies are made up of millions of cells, grouped together to form tissues and organs such as muscles and bones, the lungs and the liver. Genes inside each cell order it to grow, work, reproduce and die. Normally, our cells obey these orders and we remain healthy. But sometimes the instructions get mixed up, causing the cells to form lumps or tumors, or spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body. Tumors can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumor cells stay in one place in the body and are not usually lifethreatening. Malignant tumor cells are able to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body are called metastases. The first sign that a malignant tumor has spread (metastasized) is often swelling of nearby lymph nodes, but cancer can metastasize to almost any part of the body. It is important to find malignant tumors as early as possible. Cancers are named after the part of the body where they start. For example, cancer that starts in the bladder but spreads to the lung is called bladder cancer with lung metastases. carcinoma is the most common type of breast cancer.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer starts in the cells of the breast. The breast tissue covers an area larger than just the breast. It extends up to the collarbone and from the armpit across to the breastbone in the centre of the chest. The breasts sit on the chest muscles that cover the ribs. Each breast is made of glands, ducts (thin tubes) and fatty tissue. Lobules are groups of glands that can produce milk. Milk flows from the lobules through a network of ducts to the nipple. The nipple is in the centre of a darker area of skin called the areola. Fatty tissue fills the spaces between the lobules and ducts and protects them. A womans breasts may feel different at different times of her menstrual cycle, sometimes becoming lumpy just before her period. Breast tissue also changes with age. Breast tissue in younger women is mostly made of glands and milk ducts, but older womens breasts are made up mostly of fatty tissue. The breasts also contain lymph vessels and lymph nodes, which are part of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system helps fight infections. Lymph vessels move lymph fluid to the lymph nodes. Lymph nodes trap bacteria, cancer cells and other harmful substances. There are groups of lymph nodes near the breast under the arm, near the collarbone and in the chest behind the breastbone. Cancer cells may start within the ducts (this is called ductal carcinoma) or in the lobules (lobular carcinoma). Ductal

NHL Lockout: Get Ready For Hockey Rerun Night In Canada

the famous Boston vs. Montreal, toomany-men-on-the-ice playoff game, which is my bet for this weeks winner, and featured Don Cherry behind the bench. Hes still going to be there this week, as Stewart says Cherry wont be involved in the first two weeks of broadcasts, but Ron MacLean will be hosting, and she hints there will be some fun during the in-between period segments. Were going to do some interesting things. The benefit of doing historic and retro games is that we can have some funny elements around it, she says. There may be some interesting outfits and some people might be breaking out the handlebar moustaches. Stewart also responded to a Friends of Canadian Broadcasting release sent out on Tuesday, titled NHL Lockout just the tip of the iceberg for CBC, which estimated the CBC will lose $200 million if it loses HNIC in 2014, and this lockout could serve as a precursor. They have no access to our financials so I have no idea where they get there numbers from, was her response, reminding that it is still two years until the HNIC deal is up. The CBC arent the only people getting in the hockey rerun business. TSN is filling Wednesday nights with the best of Team Canada, with 2009s World Juniors featuring Jordan Eberles magic on tap this week, and Sidney Crosby and Team Canada 2010 up next. TSN will also add more coverage of other sports, including baseball, NBA and NCAA, but Tuesday nights will be sports-themed movies. Another interesting decision, and clearly a growth area for all sports is

TImes sporTs
documentaries. TSN has Canadian rights to ESPNs 30 for 30 series, which just started up again in the U.S. with the much lauded Broke, a doc on how many athletes lose their massive fortunes. TSN plans to fill holes with the series starting Thursday by jumping ahead and showing 9.79*, which looks at Ben Johnson and the mens 100-metre final at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It will be followed by a discussion with Brian Williams and Gino Reda who covered it at the time. Over at Sportsnet, the MLB playoffs will carry the day, but the network is also going the minor league route, moving up its CHL coverage by a month, airing games on Friday nights, and as long as the lockout is on, American Hockey League games on Saturday nights. All the broadcasters say that they hope a deal is forthcoming, and that this scrambling doesnt last too long it does helps that now is a busy time with other sports but come January, things will get more desperate with no NHL hockey. NHL Players Association executive director Donald Fehr spoke to the Toronto Stars editorial board on Tuesday, and he offered a novel solution that could solve the networks and potentially all of our lockout problems. Look if the law would permit it, and the other side would be interested in doing it, I would do the bargaining on television so everybody could see, he said. It will never happen, but that sounds like the best idea for alternative NHL programming weve heard so far.

Kirstine Stewart, head of CBC English-language services, says the network is trying to make "lemonade out of lemons" with Hockey Night in Canada: Your Pick, which asks viewers to help select a classic NHL game to rerun each Saturday night during the lockout.

Consider it hockey rerun night in Canada. Credit CBC with a novel idea that takes into account that this is the first NHL lockout in the social media age and using that too its advantage, with its Hockey Night in Canada: Your Pick plan. The broadcaster put five classic games on its website and asked fans and viewers to vote on what they would like to watch on Saturday night. The first weeks voting is closed, with now the only suspense being the winner, and week twos games are now up for your choosing. Over 80,000 people

voted the first week. Were making lemonade out of lemons, says Kirstine Stewart, head of CBC English-language services. You can throw up classic hockey games without giving people the opportunity to choose, but I think what makes this special is allowing people through social media to make their choices known. Its a smart strategy, playing on Canadians Saturday night hockey routine, and Stewart admits they were surprised by the amount of votes. The producers tried to choose games that were memorable and told a story, like

C J Patel Group of Companies Limited, sponsors of the National Football League appear to be rethinking their financial backing following Football Houses decision to stick with the 10-team league format for the upcoming season. The sponsors in an NFL meeting last month at the Fiji FA HQ in Suva urged the parent body to reduce the number of participating teams to eight to lift the competition level and also boost crowd numbers. But, the motion was not passed during the congress that was held at the Ba Academy. CJ Patel general manager Pranil Singh said the onus is now on Fiji FA to draw up an equally workable structure with the current format. It is now clear as that there is no chance for the proposed format, so now the parent body will have to outline how they are going to inject a competitive

edge and attract more spectators while still working with the same number of teams, Singh said. The structure should also ensure sponsors get their full return. The plan that they come up with will then be forwarded to our marketing department for their feedback then we will decide. Singh says C J Patel spends $250,000 a year in kind and cash but have not been getting good returns. We sign a deal every year to spend $150,000 in cash and give $100,000 in kind. We are not saying that we will pull our sponsorship. All will depend on the plan they will come up with. If they dont come up with a better plan we might consider spending in other sports, Singh said. Meanwhile, Singh has welcomed a motion made by BA FA for two teams to be directly demoted and vice-versa.

The new NFL season starts on the first week of December this year.

Fiji will be looking to defend the Gold Coast Sevens title they won in 2011 when the first of nine rounds on the 2012/13 HSBC Sevens World Series takes place this weekend. Of the 12 players to have been a part of the triumphant squad in Australia last year only one returns, whilst eight of the current squad will be playing in their first World Series event. Osea Kolinisau has returned from injury to bolster the squad with experience, and is looking ahead to the new season. "In this moment I am really happy to be fit again and part of the Fiji Sevens squad," said Kolinisau on National Fiji day. "The recovery has been good, I have been playing some 15s back home, and now I am looking forward to the new season, which will hopefully be injury free. "We do have eight new players, but they are not new to rugby, just new to the Series. They are young but full of talent and I guess the fans will have to

see that at the weekend." In the Gold Coast Sevens first appearance as a tournament on the World Series last year, Fiji defeated New Zealand 26-12 in the final at Skilled Park. The victory was their first of three Cup titles across the season, which saw them finish second overall behind Gordon Tietjens' side overall, and Kolinisau hopes his side can repeat the achievement this weekend. "It was a great moment, and a good memory for me," added Kolinisau. "We have the motivation to defend our title, we won it last year and we want to win it again this year. But it is always tough to defend a title you have won and the likes of New Zealand and the other teams will be tough to beat. "We want to be as close to the top of the standings as possible." Fiji is joined in Pool B by hosts Australia, Scotland and Pacific neighbours Tonga.
