"Digger" Doug Gust #55 Retired?

Written By Ceaja Philp
"Digger" Doug Gust of Salem, Wisconsin may have retired from competitive quad racing, but you won't find him wrapped up in a blanket, wearing slippers, and sleeping the day away. Doug's schedule is almost more full now than it was in his competitive race days. This legend of racing was a champion and top five finish winner right up to his last season in 2009. One of the oldest, but most fierce competitors on the circuit was 42 years old before calling it quits. Doug's quad racing career was a little out of the 'norm'. He was a motocross rider who didn't start getting into ATVs until he was 14 years old, and didn't start racing them until well into his teens. Once making the switch he still had to prove himself on the Pro level. Even with his late start in racing ATVs, he still managed 17+ years of professional competition, with his first ATV race being in 1987. Doug remembers being hooked on racing after his dad took him to a motocross race at age twelve. Even though "Digger" started on two wheels, he admits he always wanted to race quads for a living, and that he did! There were a few things along the way that made him question his decision, such as having his quad, truck, trailer and everything in it stolen early on during his race career racing quads. He says it took him some time to replace the equipment and get back into things. He then had a few injuries that made him question continuing, but in the end he continued to push and prove himself all the way until he retired from racing. Doug had been proving himself in the industry from his first Pro race, where he managed to take a fourth place win. Quite the change of pace considering the legend had owned his own business, 'Digger Doug's Excavating' for about ten years before deciding to race full-time instead of trying to balance them both. Prior to owning his own business he worked for his dad doing carpentry work. Doug is not just a Pro-Class champion. He worked extensively to help develop the QuadRacer LT-R450 alongside engineers from Suzuki Motor Corporation him. He was able to race to the 2006 WPSA ATV MX championship in the machines inaugural season. As for what keeps him busy now....During the winter you can find Doug riding his snowmobile or hitting the ski slopes, and summer finds him out on the water; skiing or on some sort of watercraft either playing or fishing. "Digger" also has a private air strip, RC track, and motocross/snowmobile track to keep him busy. As for the air strip, he will admit that was an afterthought...especially since he didn't even know how to fly or even own an airplane before he started building it. He was actually building a pond, and as he moved the dirt decided to make the landing strip.

Guess with that done the next step was the plane and learning to fly....? When it comes to the motocross track, he feels that during the winter months training can sometimes be impossible for racers who live in the northern states. Many Pro racers have the option to head south to warmer climates for training during the off-season. Doug wanted to give those who couldn't or didn't want to a place to train, and maybe cross-train on snowmobiles, depending on the weather and snow conditions. Doug was able to purchase a snow making machine which also helps during the winters to keep snocross athletes practicing and his competitive itch under control. Little did he know that when he was only 8 years old building jumps by shovel with his buddies on the property, that years later he would purchase the land from his parents and create even bigger and better ones. "Digger" Doug Gust may have retired from Pro quad racing, but he is still a huge role model and mentor to current and up-andcoming athletes. You never know when you may find ATV and motocross racer Nick DeNoble, or snocross racers Kody Kamm, Mike Bauer, or Ross Martin taking their laps at the compound. As you can see, Doug has plenty to keep him busy and the word 'retired' doesn't really exist

Two brothers with one-way plane tickets to Texas on a mission to buy a rust-free truck, thats how this started. We were looking for a 1967 or 1968 Chevy short box, but nothing we found fit in the price range for the condition we wanted. Then, the day before we needed to leave Texas with something in order to get back to work on time, my brother John spotted a 1971 Bronco in the local classifieds. After looking at it we decided it was the vehicle we would drive back to Minnesota. As difficult as it is to believe, we couldn't make this up....the hard top had to be left behind because the sellers cow had sat on it, so we made the trek with only the soft top which had also seen its better days. After the first couple hundred miles listening to the top flap in the wind, we both decided we couldnt stand it any longer, so we made a stop and agreed to drive with the top down if the weather permitted. It was June 1998 and somewhere around the Iowa border, both suffering from sunstroke that the idea was hatched; agreeing this Bronco would make a great low rider.

The 1997 LT1 and 4L60E transmission were installed into the frame, and the motor was chosen because of its low profile, which allowed the hood to remain unaltered.

COMMUTING IS A GASSAVER
Last year I wrote an article about the rising gas prices, there was speculation back in early 2011 that the price for a gallon of gas could exceed $4.00. Nationally it did hit the $4.00 and above mark, but then it had a gradual drop. Why? People were pissed; got a little creative in their driving habits, and sold off their gas guzzling machines. Well folks, here we are in 2012 and the speculators (dont you just love that word) are saying $5.00 a gallon. Again nationally it is right on either side of the $5.00 mark. Depending on the area where you live, for example east or west coast they have already jumped way over the $4.00 a gallon, Chicago as of this writing $4.69, and if you ever get one of those luxury trips to the Hawaiian Islands they are currently at $5.70 a gallon. So my friends be thankful that you live in the Midwest the bargain basement of gas pricing. Isnt it a damn shame that that these carpet baggers, speculators, oil merchants, and politicians that are in bed with the Saudis have us by the throat? But like the creative driving habits of 2011, I can already see an area where people are fighting back. I was on a run, yes on foot and passed a suburban bus stop I couldnt help to notice that the bus shelter resembled what I remember as a kid in Boston, standing room only. I then took a look at the football field parking lot that was filled to brim like you would see at any big league sporting event. Thats when I had that ah-hah moment... the people are fighting back, we just dont see it in the gas prices. I asked a neighbor that is one of those bus riding commuters about the experience, his answer to me was something like this, it was hard at first to let go and not have my car at my disposal when I needed to go, but after a few weeks, I figured out several things, no stressful traffic jams, relax and let someone else do the driving, and I was saving about $200.00 per week in gas and downtown parking fees. Now thats fighting back and saving a bundle. I know the busses are getting more popular just check out the bus
Page 10

lanes at rush hour and count how many pass you, and if you can see inside you will notice standing room only. Another observation I had in the burbs was a busting at the seams parking lot with commuters using one vehicle for several riders. This commute is much like the bus but boils down to pitching in for the gas and maybe a beer or two. Whatever way youre packing your butt into, a bus or vehicle you reap the benefit of a little extra money in the wallet. That also may explain why on some interstate the traffic moves just a little bit better. Now where I drive from the infamous I-35 there are pockets of congestion. In my line of work I dont have that luxury of opting for a bus or carpooling, but I did sign up and purchase a MN Pass, probably they wisest purchase I have made in a number of years. I still cant believe as I pass all those single drivers going 5 miles and hour bumper to bumper and here I am in my own little lane cruising at a safe and comfortable 60 miles per hour, and it only cost me as little as 25 cents to dollar fifty. Now if these explorers ever realized that they are burning 5 times that in gas as they slowly idle, and did I mention that this venture is always stress free. I just may screw myself.

So forget I ever wrote this paragraph. One on my first observations when I first relocated to Minnesota in 1993 was the perfect place to construct a rail system, a straight shot from the south I-35 directly into the City of Minneapolis. If any of you have ever traveled to other large cities where the traffic jams are busting at the seams, Chicago, Boston, or New York. These cities focused their attention on relieving the congested roadways, rail and bus systems were built, developed, and implemented. The cost was astronomical; however the payback in these cities will be 100 times the cost of these projects. For example in Boston the project known as the big dig, we literally sunk our inner city highways under ground with several tunnels some that go right under Boston Harbor. These tunnels resemble a play tube for gerbils, but it works. The project took 14 years and billions of dollars, however we now have a drastic reduction in smog from bumper to bumper traffic. They also conducted a study with the business district work force and found that the productivity increased. Much of what believe is due to less time sitting in traffic and stressing out. The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) also expanded the rail system in all directions to extend to the burbs to take

Find us on Facebook Wheels of Thunder

May 2012

the pain away. Forget the pain, take the train. I believe we had a proposal on the table for a similar transit system but it was vetoed by a previous Governor, Boo yah! Too bad, Minnesota could really use it. Recently another rail system project in Wisconsin that would have connected Milwaukee and Madison was also buried by the new Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker. Aside from the commuting issue a lot of jobs that would have been created by this project were lost. Dont these guys get it! These projects are just what the American economy needs to put people back to work and at the same time make our states an attractive place to work, live, and raise a family. Maybe if our former Minnesota Gov had some vision instead of tunnel vision we would be ahead of the game and could combat the frequent increases in gas prices. Now as I start to research more about the oil situation Im seeing a lot of vetoing pipelines that could possibly control the pricing of oil. Now is the million dollar questions where is all the oil that is currently being drilled in the Williston, North Dakota area? Where is going? Who is buying it? And why is there no relief? We have all these high buck paying jobs in the North Dakota oil fields, but it looks like another political faade that some big oil merchant is reaping the benefits. Doesnt it just piss you off? Every time we pull into a gas station we are faced with the gas price increase, from morning to night the big sign resembles a scale on the biggest loser, but in this case the scale goes up and the only loser here is the consumer. The problem here is Big Brother or Wall Street, has that gun to our head everyday. The way we Americans live our daily lives, commuting to work, shuffling kids around, driving to

the grocery store, or just enjoying the personal use of our vehicles, we are forced to live with the price increase. The gas station isnt like a restaurant where based on the price you can easily just say screw it and walk out, shopping around for gas prices is a waste, of gas, time, more miles on you car. So why does the price change so rapidly, why go up anyway, and when will it stop? Big brother will tell us its the Villains in the Middle East, also know as Billionaire Oil Merchants. They simply are chocking us because they know we will pay for the luxury of driving a vehicle or enjoying our free time in our sport vehicles, winter and summer craft. A last year a local motorcycle dealer mentioned to me during the first go around of $4.00 a gallon gas prices that someday we will look like Japan, smaller fuel efficient vehicles, more two wheel vehicles on the road, car pooling, and public transportation. I couldnt agree with that statement more, however two wheel vehicles in the Midwest, now this year we were lucky but with some of the harsh winters we could get probably highly unlikely for many of us that would be a standard option. But think this one through? We tend to have wonderful spring; summer, and fall temperatures, maybe trading in your 4 wheeled vehicles for 2 on the road isnt such a bad idea. Currently several powersport dealerships that advertise in Wheels of Thunder, are already in the preparing stages for higher gas prices. Scooters, mopeds, higher mileage motorcycles, high efficiency boats, Jet Skis, and ATVs. Why should we let Big Brother or some oil merchant have the pleasure of sucking the life out of us through higher gas prices? For those that have to make that trek into the city or venture out to the burbs for work the bottom line stressors are time, money, and fatigue. And who needs that? The price of gas is the gun to each and every Americans head, we cant live or survive without so what do we do? We pay the ransom. When will it end? I really feel sorry for this and the next generation. They wont experience all the pleasure that we had 30 years ago. Long haul family trips to the cabins, weekends on the lakes, tubing and skiing and the winter. Honestly it is so sad to see life as we knew it go down the toilet. The situation goes beyond the commute and the pleasure trips. If we dont start to push back, EVERYTHING you touch will have an additional freight charge to it, and I mean everything. Every mode of the transportation that ships

into or across the United States will feel the pain, whether it is in the additional fuel cost, long term parking of their rigs, or laying people off. The impact will be felt by every American, rich or poor, vehicle owner or not, sport toys or a spectator. This is what economic terrorism is all about; you dont need to kill anyone, just kick them in the shins, hit them in the gut, or keep tripping them. Every time things start to appear to be getting better these villains look for ways to trip us up and disrupt our freedom that we fought so proudly for, for over 200 years. We are Americans, we need to band together, brush ourselves off, and show the world that no one can push us around, not the off shoot political fanatics, terrorist organizations, Big Brother, or the billionaire oil merchants that drive around in gold plated luxury cars. The gas prices will go up, but Im not buying into the reasons why, and neither should you. I encourage every reader to fight back, seriously look at the economic modes of American made transportation that are available, whether it has two, three, or four wheels, floats, or flys. We need to do this now, because as hard as it is for me to swallow $5.00 or more gas prices, I will never be able to swallow paying $75.00 for a steak that once cost me $20.00. ASCAR is coming to Brainerd International Raceway, highlighting a jam-packed 2012 racing schedule that includes a mix of perennial favorites, new unique events and, of course, the big dog on the porch: the 31st Annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.

The most exciting addition to BIRs schedule, though, is the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race, which will be held the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend

Kevin Harvick, whos near the top of the points standings in Sprint Cup, got his start in the K&N series, which is a developmental program for young aspiring NASCAR drivers. But for race fans, the K&N series looks, smells, feels and tastes just like Sprint Cup racing. Were really excited about adding the NASCAR K&N Pro Series to our schedule, said BIR Owner Jed Copham. BIR hasnt hosted a NASCAR race since 2004, when the NASCAR Elite Division was here. The NASCAR K&N Pro Series is much more competitive racing and will be a lot of fun for fans, especially those who have never seen NASCAR racing in person. The NASCAR K&N race is part of the 4th Annual Street Car Showdown May 25-27, which also features the kick-off to the three-race Muscle Car Series on the drag strip and a combination national-regional Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) road race called the SCCA Harvey West Classic. The Muscle Car Series is a perennial favorite for BIR drag racing fans because it features the fast five classes Pro Outlaw, Outlaw, King Street, Real Street and True Street where fans are treated to speeds over 200 mph and times that can dip below 7 seconds. There are also 10 Index classes, three Strip Eliminator classes and Truck Eliminator. The Street Car Showdown kicks off the Muscle Car Series, followed by the 26th

Race day will include practice and qualifying sessions, and then conclude with a 50-lap, 125mile race where the big stock cars will entertain fans by banging their way through the tracks tight corners, including BIRs signature 300-degree carousel corner.

Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go July 6-8 and the 24th Annual Muscle Car Shootout Labor Day weekend, when the series champions will be crowned.

Thunder at the Lakes is June 1-3. Fast-forward to Labor Day weekend. The drag strip will barely get a chance to cool off from the NHRA Nationals when the Muscle Car Series will return for the grand finale during the 24th Annual Muscle Car Shootout. While drivers are battling on the drag strip for series championships, road racers will be on the Competition Road Course going wheel to wheel for a championship in the SCCA Pro Racings Trans-Am Series. Some of the top road racers in the country will be behind the wheel, duking it out on the challenging road course. Its a double-header weekend for the series, meaning there will be qualifying and racing on both Saturday and Sunday. And with only one race left on the schedule after BIR, the competitive level of the drivers should be redlining! When the Trans-Am Series isnt on the road course during the Muscle Car Shootout, fans will be treated to regional racing by the SCCAs Land O Lakes Region during its Jack Pine Sprints, where a variety of cars racing in several different classes will be competing. A classic car show and live music Saturday night round out the weekend.

The Big Show

Although the Muscle Car Series is always a big draw for BIR, all eyes from the drag racing world will be on BIR Aug. 16-19 during the 31st Annual Lucas Oils NHRA Nationals. As the largest motorsports race in the Upper Midwest, the NHRA Nationals features the worlds best drag racers (names like John Force, Tony Schumacher, Larry Dixon, Ron Capps, etc), the fastest cars and a legion of crazy fans that celebrate NHRA racing like nobody else can. BIRs infamous campground, called The Zoo, takes on a life of its own the week of Nationals with live music nightly, an annual Partywagon Contest, rickshaw races and a lot more. The NHRA Nationals is the 16th race on the 23-race Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and the second-to-the-last race before the Countdown to the Championship, which involves six final races between the drivers at the top of the points standings, so the action at BIR is always intense as drivers jockey for position in the points standings before they go into the Countdown. For those who want a taste of what the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals is all about should check out the Thunder at the Lakes NHRA Divisional Race. Youll see many of the same Sportsman drivers who compete at the NHRA Nationals as they chase after divisional points and a chance to compete for a national championship in November.

Course, fans can watch the Central Roadracing Associations (CRA) insane brand of Superbike Racing, where ultra competitive club racers fly around the course on two wheels and a knee. In addition to the weekends racing lineup, the Midwest Cycle Fest will include stunt bike performances throughout the weekend, burnout contests, bike displays, a bike dyno and live music. The CRA will be at BIR five weekends this summer, including July 6-8 during the 26th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Show & Go. While the Superbikes are tearing up the road course that weekend, the Muscle Car Series will be on the drag strip for the second leg of the three-race series. Show & Go, which is typically scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend, includes fireworks, a classic car show, live music Saturday night and more.

Turbo-charge Me
The imports and sport compacts take over BIR June 22-24 for a turbo-charged weekend of drag racing, drifting, autocross, lapping, car shows, burn-out contests, live music and much more during the 4th Annual Modern Automotive Performance Proving Grounds. Featuring front-, all- and rear-wheel drive cars as well as import bikes, the Proving Grounds is quickly becoming a cult favorite at BIR. The Bracket Drag Racing Series is back this summer with six races on the schedule. Its super-competitive drag racing with series championships on the line in 10 classes. The June 29-July 1 race includes the National Hot Rod Diesel Association, where diesel cars and trucks share the drag strip. Four of the bracket weekends include other events running simultaneously. The June 29-July 1 bracket weekend will also feature the return of the ChumpCar World Series, where teams of four drivers race $500 junkers during seven-hour endurance races on Saturday and Sunday. The Chumps are an example of some of the offbeat racing you can see at BIR. Another one, this year, is the International Watercross Associations Snowmobile Watercross Racing, which will be at BIR two weekends this season. It features snowmobiles racing around a course on open water in this case, its BIRs campground lake. You read that correctly: snowmobiles racing around
May 2012

From 4 wheels to 2
If youre a fan of two-wheel racing, BIRs got plenty to offer this year, including the Midwest Cycle Fest June 15-17. On the drag strip, the Midwest Motorcycle Drag Racing Association will showcase drag bikes everything from street bikes to Pro Stock Motorcycles that get down the track at 200 mph. buoys on open water. Were always looking for different and unique types of racing for our fans, Copham said. The ChumpCar and watercross races are perfect examples of that. Where else can you see drag racing, road racing and watercross going on at the same time, and all within walking distance?0

Now Its Your Turn

When most people think of BIR, they think of spectator races, but there are many opportunities for people to get behind the steering wheel and test their fortitude and driving skills. For example, the Wednesday Night Drags Street Legal Style is a program where BIR opens its gates to anyone with a street legal car, truck or bike, and a helmet. From 5 p.m. to dusk, they can make as many runs down the drag strip as time permits, using the light tree, scoreboard and burnout box. We even have an announcer calling the action. There are nine Wednesdays on the schedule this year. The same thing is available on the road course, where the BIR Performance Driving School combines classroom instruction

Brent Rau launched from the starting line last year in the Pro Outlaw class during the grand finale of the Muscle Car Series. and on-track driving to teach you how to handle a car at high speeds. There are 15 open school days on the schedule. Participants can either drive their own car or one of BIRs single-seat, 5-speed Ford Spec Racers. I think thats one of our best-kept secrets, Copham said. Many people dont know that they can come to BIR actually race instead of sitting in the grandstands and watching. Most of our races are open to anyone, as long as their car or bike meets certain safety and tech requirements. Some of the races require a short instructional session as well, but most of our events are open. Visit our website for more details: www.BrainerdRaceway.com

different Mercurys on display. Speaking of highlights, we cant forget the music provided by the Shadows Band who kept the crowds in the West Fargo Veterans Memorial building rocking to music from the 50s. What you may not know about the club (identified by its trademark black jacket with the white top hat and white lettering) is that it is a non-profit organization. Most of the proceeds from the car show go to charity with just enough retained to cover operating expenses. Some of the charities that the Toppers have had the honor to be involved with include: Make-A-Wish Foundation, Minkota Chapter of the American Red Cross, Ronald McDonald House, Dakota Medical Foundation, Muscular Dystrophy Association, Kindred Band Parents, Big Brother-Big Sister programs and the Harbor School. Currently the Toppers are helping the Fargo Air Museum raise money for a new wing. Thanks in part to a $3,000 sponsor from the car club, the Air Museum will award a 1967 Cessna Skylane to one lucky

The 59-year old Toppers Car Club recently hosted its 54th Annual Rod and Custom Car Show. With record setting entries and attendance, the event was a car enthusiasts dream! Toppers president Wayne Rud said the show was exceptional not just because of the quantity of cars on display, but because of the outstanding quality of them. The Toppers Car Club of Fargo-Moorhead was originally formed in 1953 by Fargo native Erlyn Carlson, with a membership of 15 members. The purpose of the founding was to bring a group of people together that could meet and share their interests in all types of cars. All types of cars is exactly what people saw as they were treated to a variety of makes and models in every size, shape and color imaginable. With 107 entries, this years competition was especially tough but winners had to be chosen. Top awards included; Sweepstakes Winner, Michael Letherts 1939 Ford; Peoples Choice Winner Barry Dohrmanns 1961 Chevrolet Bubble Top; Topper Choice Winner Marlyn Englerts 1956 Chevrolet; Top 20 pick and Street Rod Of The Year Larry & Shirley Hosaluk's 1937 Lincoln Zephyr

Over the years, the venue has changed but the annual Toppers car show always provides a great opportunity for collectors, enthusiasts and novices alike to take a walk down memory lane and see some of the best custom cars in the area. The Museum in its new location, located at 102 Chamber Drive in Anamosa, Iowa, has on display over 320 rare motorcycles of 90 different brands from around the world. You will experience a step back in time with historic motorcycle memorabilia, with thousands of posters, fine art, and antique toys. The National Motorcycle Museum exhibitions are designed to help you get a solid grasp of casual motorcycling and racing as well as a taste of American motorcycle culture. You can immerse yourself in the stories of celebrities and characters like Arlen Ness and Von Dutch and take in rare art, sculpture and personal effects from these American legends. A showcase full of images and objects takes you into the wild life of showman Evel Knievel. Another favorite to see is the authenticated Captain America chopper from the 1969 cult classic Easy Rider, and also enjoy dozens of other motorcycle movie posters from around the world. The Museum is set up in thematic areas and just about every space is crammed with goodies. You have great access; there are no ropes or barriers, and of course you know not to touch. High ceilings permitted the designers to create a mezzanine to

display a fantastic collection of pedal cars also designed as trucks and even airplanes. And there are a few dozen motorcycles and bicycles up there, too. Over 400 rare toys in several large antique showcases may take you back to your childhood and to your grandfathers.

Copeland Community Center and Valley Youth Center

Years of Making a Difference

hen it comes to giving back thankfully there are many organizations and charities doing their part. Then every once in awhile I come across one that has had such an extreme impact on someone that I can't help but wonder what it is that made it so special to them. This time it led me from a story we did a couple months ago about Duluth native Kyle Smalley to the Copeland Community Center and Valley Youth Center. As we spoke about the upcoming Motorhead Madness event in Duluth, he mentioned how the youth center had been an important part of his life; giving him a healthy outlet from the streets, and how they were going to give some of its members an opportunity to be involved at the show. There's no question how hard it can be to be a young adult trying to stay focused and out of trouble these days. With parents always having to work to support the home, and so many temptations for the youth spending time alone, having to grow up faster than many of us had to.
Page 28 Find us on Facebook Wheels of Thunder May 2012

Written by Ceaja Philp

There were going to be ten of the center's young members chosen to be at the show and get to take part in its activities. They were chosen based on their involvement with the center, their interest in motorsports, and their overall community involvement. The Valley Youth Center in Duluth, Minnesota has been around for over 25 years, and 85% of the kids that go there are from low income single parent homes. They offer a relaxing setting were the kids can find extra tutoring and homework help, physical activity through a variety of indoor and outdoor games, and different field trip or events for them to experience. The biggest advantage they gain

being a part of the center are the leadership skills and how to make a positive contribution in their community. All of this happens while letting the kids just be kids! Kyle put me in contact with the center's current Program Director, Angelo Simone. Within the first few minutes of speaking with Angelo I could hear the passion and appreciation for a chance to highlight the 10 kids. He spoke with such desolation telling me about almost losing the center a couple of times because of the lack of funds to run it. Anyone who has been involved with a non-profit program knows how much time and work it can take to keep the doors open, but also understands how much a place that does so much for our youth means to us and them. Angelo has been working at the center for 28 years this April and grew up going to the center since he was only 7 years old. He knows firsthand how important it is to the community and what it did for him. He admits he came from a poor family who lived in the projects with a handicapped mom who suffered from polo. He said she raised five children on her own, with his dad having left when he was seven. He was happy to tell me how Kyle had been a great role model for him and a lot of kids in West Duluth. Being shown how fun life could be without drugs and alcohol made such a huge impact in his life that he knew

member already. It seemed so natural for them to express how much the center has helped them and created another 'family' for them. It definitely proved how powerful what they believe in is and how the center has had such an impact on all of them. After a couple more weeks the next five winners were chosen. Angelo was happy to give me the names Jon Phipps, Angelo Bartlett, Marques Jones, Keegan Kalenowski, and Nick Suomala. After having spent time speaking with Kyle, Angelo, and the high school members I couldn't wait to spread the word and make it my own duty to find a way to help support the center. They are not part of a larger national organization so anything given to them will stay with the center in Duluth. Please support them by becoming a volunteer giving your time as positive adult role model, donate school supplies, recreational equipment and other materials, by saving your magazines and newspapers inserts printed on shiny paper, which they use as a fundraiser through the NewPage Corporation, and by your financial gift. To learn more about the center and how you can be a part of its success, please visit http://www.copelandvalley.org

he wanted to be a part of it as an adult as well. While speaking with Angelo he said the first five of the ten had been chosen. I asked if I could get the chance to speak with them, which he excitedly agreed. He was happy to explain how they were chosen because of the way the present themselves as role models for the younger kids, for how much they dedicate to helping through volunteering with events and activities, their constant assistance with fundraisers, and working hard in school. They are also drug and alcohol free. These first five have been involved with the center since they were very young, and now having proved themselves have been chosen to play a bigger role during their high school years. From there we set up a time for all of them to be there. I had the pleasure to speak with high school students A.J. Simone, Dustin Labarge, John Ulvi, Austin Nelson, and Tim Kaspari. As I spoke with each of the guys I quickly found out that there were very common things with their answers. They have all

here's no denying that technology has come pretty far in the automotive world over the years. Today's modern cars are filled with sensors and over-monitoring ECUs everywhere. Back-up cameras, heads-up displays, and evermore sophisticated engines. Today's modern motors can do some impressive things and are more powerful than ever before thanks to technology. While it is nice to see motors progressing so far, the same cannot be said for styling. I've found myself over the years growing more and more fond of older cars. I always get excited over the thought of mixing old and new together. It seems that Ben Studley had similar thoughts.
May 2012 www.WheelsofThunder.net Page 35

Ben's 1981 Camaro started out as a $900 purchase back in 2005 when he was 15. Him and his father worked on it together in their garage so it would be ready for him to drive for his 16th birthday. After a bit of fixing up, the car was ready to go, and Ben was a pretty chuffed new driver sporting some classic metal. Worked progressed over the years as he addressed every area of the car starting with the aged interior. Custom Speed Hut gauges in a Covan Dash carbon fiber bezel add a bit of modern flare to the restored interior. After cleaning it up and replacing with certain period-correct parts, he moved to the exterior. All of the glass was replaced, and the damaged front end was replaced with a '78 front end from a parts car Ben had. After the cars was prepped, the PPG Red Fire metallic was poured into the paint-gun and sprayed onto the body. The car was shaping up to be something special, so Ben set about building a rather special motor for his car. Originally, Ben built a 327 SBC motor but he ran into a lot of issues getting it to run right. This is where a little bit of luck stepped in for Ben and one of his friends.

haust systems. The transmission is a Performabuilt stage 2 transmission with a 3000rpm-stall converter connected to a

With the full drive-train swap completed, and the restored interior and exterior, Ben found the perfect balance in his version of a resto-mod car. The subtle and classic exterior don't give any hint to the modern performance underneath the hood. However, what is really impressive is the way the swap was carried out. The motor looks factory fresh, and everything works the way it should. The fit and finish of the car is what makes it stand out more than anything else, and the balance of old and new school make this one very special secondgeneration Camaro.

Page 36

There's a saying that goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure, and this rang true for Ben and his friend's rather unfortunate event with his 2002 Camaro. After a brief meeting with a guardrail, the Camaro was totaled and this is where Ben stepped in and bought the wrecked car. The Camaro already had an impressive mod-list, and Ben made full use of the car swapping everything he could into his second-gen Camaro. The built LS1, built 4l60 transmission, wiring harness, PCM, and built rear-end soon called the '81 Camaro their home. The worked over LS1 features Patriot stage 2 heads, a LS6 intake manifold, custom Thunder Racing cam, 42lb injectors, and a LS2 timing chain. A set of Doug's custom headers are mated to a custom 3 exhaust done by Tim's Custom Exhaust in Coon Rapids, MN, a name that is becoming quite popular for bespoke ex-

custom drive-shaft and a 10-bolt posi rearend With the drive-train swap completed, Ben focused on the suspension and brakes. QA1 adjustable coilovers are at each corner with Wilwood calipers and disc-brakes all around. Hotchkis sub-frame connectors, front and rear sway bars, and Global West control arms beef up the suspension further ensuring this car goes where Ben points the steering wheel which also features an upgraded IROC steering rack shortening the lock-to-lock ratio to 2-turns from 3.5.

hings are revving up for the 59th season of racing at the Buffalo River Race Park in Glyndon, MN. Riding high after winning the 2012 ISOC Snocross series Event of the Year, owner Kevin Nathe and team are busy making the rounds to promote the spring and summer race season.

Nathe talked about some exciting changes coming up this season. New on this years schedule, BRRP will be running A-mods and Street Stocks every other weekend and on August 12th the first Late Model Special will debut at the speedway. Weve never done that out here so it should be a really big event. Nathe and speedway Race Director Duane Peterson are working on scheduling 4-6 mini-sprint races as well. The mini-sprints get around pretty fast, sometimes faster than the A-mods, so they will be fun to watch. Plus they are small so you can fit a lot of them on the track explained Nathe. Along with the Wissota A-mods, B-mods, and Street Stocks, Peterson said they will be running Legend Cars, BRRP Pure Stock and BRRP Hornets. As part of the season kick off, BRRP is registering people for a chance to win a 2007 Club Car golf cart valued at about $6,000. The cart was donated by All Season Motor Sports in West Fargo and has been completely refurbished and customized with 12-inch rims, low-profile tires, black and silver seats, black top and body and a folddown tinted windshield. All Seasons owner Alan Pritchard felt the partnership was natural, being that he has a history with both

Nathe and BRRP marketing and sales director, Brad Rivers. It works for both of us and we were glad to do it said Pritchard. Some of you may have seen the cart at the Toppers Rod and Custom Car Show in West Fargo at the end of March or at the All Seasons open house April 12-14. If you missed those events, there are plenty of chances to check it out and get registered. Just head out to BRRP for the races and register there (drawing will be held August 12th). Speaking of heading out to the speedwayI did just that and found Nathe busy preparing for the first Motocross races of the season. Racers were out enjoying the warm sunny day as they practiced jumps and turns on the track. As I visited with Nathe, I was again reminded of his enthusiasm for racing and for the future of BRRP . He told me there is plenty to look forward to this spring and summer, starting with the May 13th season opener. Rivers has been busy getting ready for the opener, making sure there is something for everyone as BRRP kicks of the spring/summer race season. Games Galore will be on sight with inflatable games for the kids in the indoor Family Fun Center. Dont miss the NASCAR simulator, which is sure to draw big crowds with its giant screen and life-like motion, and the arcade with other driving games, skee-ball and air hockey. The 6,800 sq ft indoor Racer Mall will be open and in full swing. With room for twenty-three 9X12 exhibits, there will be plenty of shopping opportunities for everyone. For the 21 and over crowd, the new upstairs bar will be open in the stadium seating area featuring a full bar and dart board. If you are looking to rent a suite this race season, you might be out of luck. Five of the six suites are already booked for the entire season. There is one twenty-person suite that comes with concessions tab and 20 tickets available per Sunday night. But this one is selling out fast too; the first four Sundays are already booked. Based on season demand, one would be well advised to book a suite for snocross long before the first snowflake falls! There are some more things brewing but Nathe wasnt letting the cat out of the bag yet. We are working on some things that a

lot of race tracks havent done or seen. Thats all I could get from Nathe at the time of the interview but I promise to let all our readers know as soon as I get the scoop! If we learned one thing this winter, its that Nathe is not satisfied with the status quo. He is determined to put BRRP on the map with the big boys and is not afraid to put it all on the line to make it happen. Get tickets and season passes at the BRRP gate, or advanced tickets at the Eagle 106.9 and Thunder Country studios at 64 Broadway in downtown Fargo. Individual tickets are $13 with kids 5 and under free. Pit

passes can be purchased at the BRRP gate for those want to get up close to the cars and drivers. For track times and dates visit www.buffaloriverracing.com For advertising, suite or Racer Mall infor-

stablished in 1954, the GSTA (Gopher State Timing Association) has been providing its members with top information on safe places to drag race; given us an amazing award winning car show each year with numerous makes and models to view, provided us information on safe and courteous hot rodding, has shown support for civic events, and has generated a good time and long lasting fellowships.

enthusiasts that had formed would meet for days or evenings of racing on abandoned stretches of road. With the hazard of cars parked on other roads to watch and a rollover of a 1936 Ford Coupe the races had to find another place that would be safer for everyone involved. The racing moved to an area in Lexington, but again for 'speculated' reasons, was shut down. No doubt this started a bad reputation for the hot rodders. In an effort to change the views of others they again tried to form an association that would be more organized and try to win over the opinions of regular

motorists. Whenever a member helped another car owned in distress, the distressed owner would get a 'courtesy card' from the 'hot-rodder' to show they were more than just a group of race nuts. There is documentation in the original Timer (GSTA newsletter)which claims that in 1954 a huge number of the hot-rodder groups got together in order to form an organization that would be long lasting and would create safer ways for them to compete and still enjoy their hobby. Oddly enough it was said that a Captain of the Minneapolis Northside Police precinct was

It was in the 50's that a few modified street machines started showing up in the Twin Cities area. During that time 'cruising' was the thing to do to show off your hot rod. There were regular paths these enthusiasts would run, which over time each new owner knew and made it a contest of impromptu street races to prove who had the best of the best, machine and driver. In the early 50s the numerous clubs of car

instrumental in helping this happen. In searching for information on the GSTA one name kept appearing for so much of the credit for the associations success. It was John Foster, who stayed as President until 1966, which is when he decided to not run for that position again. Other officials credited were Keith Rogerine (VP), Don Niles (Secretary), and Dave Saline (Treasurer). The outpouring of support from many members help provided places to hold meetings, give helpful information on cars and other information. It didn't take long

It would take about four months before it would be decided. for the word to spread and the size of the organization to multiply. With the number of members and 'issues' growing they decided to create a Constitution, which had numerous amendments until it was agreed upon by almost everyThe first events were not huge as the number of attendees were mainly the hot rod-

ders themselves. Not many on the 'outside' were aware of the group, and what their intentions were. Many of the members were anxious to have their own drag strip, but the governing body was patient and knew if they acted too fast it may fail, and thought that financially finding a sponsor would be the best route. The group knew it would take proof that their intentions were sincere. They held runs making sure to abide by road rules

even bigger and better group meetings, with speakers from numerous organizations and states, and an annual banquet was established. 1956 would also be the first year for the GSTA Car Show. The first show was held at a Red Owl parking lot, but the weather was great as well as the turn out. One short year later during the banquet they announced that once the correct land could be located, all efforts for their drag strip would become a reality. They wasted no time in finding an approved location

and regulations. Anyone who did not would be penalized points. This was a fun way for to compete and to prove to the 'general' public of the association's commitment to safety while 'hot rodding'. In order to not lose interest during the winter months one group even formed a track on the ice to keep the enthusiasts going during the mid 50s. The events grew with the help of other clubs going in together. With the growing local involvement the group actually joined with a nationwide organization in 1956. This brought about

and the plans were started for an area just north of Anoka. The plans for the strip were not just for the clubs to have somewhere to race, but to also continue to give back to the community. The continued progression and success of the GSTA has held fast and will continue. allow the sale of new and used motorcycles at events off dealer property. The Iowa Grand has all the makings of a major motorcycle rally and we're excited to be the official Harley-Davidson dealership of the rally, said Dan Moellers, co-owner of Big Barn Harley-Davidson in Des Moines. Right in the thick of a great rally event in our home state, customers from all over can check out our new and used Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and take demo rides on new bikes through the rolling hills surrounding Newton. Plus, Big Barn is providing a 2012 Harley-Davidson motorcycle to be raffled off for charity, as-well-as on-site service technicians, and will be selling official Harley-Davidson merchandise at the event. The City of Newton is creating a weekly bike night called Thunder Nights during the summer months to support the Inaugural Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally. Our community is really looking forward to all the bikes and people coming to Newton for the first ever Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally, said Mayor of Newton, Chaz Allen. On top of the rally, several members of our community have banded together to create Thunder Nights in Newton. The big rally at the speedway in July and Thunder Nights throughout the summer will create a lot of excitement in Newton.

Jay Allen, legendary rally emcee and motorcycle historian, riles up the crowd. The City of Newton committee is also planning a welcome pig roast to all rally attendees which will be held in the city square on Thursday, July 26th. The Iowa Grand Motorcycle Rally is expected to draw several thousand motorcycle enthusiasts nationwide to the area. or race enthusiasts that have never witnessed a sprint car race at a dirt track, you now have the opportunity to take in an event or two right in your own backyard, specifically at the St Croix Valley Raceway (SCVR) located near St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin. The track, which was originally built by the Kobs family over 30 years ago, is in the process of undergoing a major facelift with the goal of eventually being one of the pre-

SCVR and Future Fours

As I recently visited the track, I could feel the excitement already building. The St Croix Valley Raceway team is working exceptionally long days to get the track up to perfection while making numerous upgrades and improvements to the facility. The team is headed up by co-owners Rick Mastell and Ron Bernhagen. Both Rick and Ron have quite a vision for the track that has been around since 1980. The track has changed hands several times with different approaches to the art of racing. It started out as a mile dirt oval named Centuria Speedway. The track was cut down to a mile dirt oval in 1991 and renamed St. Croix Speedway. It is sometimes referred to as a 3/10 mile dirt track. In 1999, the track was sold again and named Kopellah Speedway. The new owners took control last summer, renamed the track St. Croix Valley Raceway, and they held their first race on July 29. Rick and Ron are committed to making St. Croix Valley Raceway a success. Co-owner Rick Mastell is relatively new to the racing scene, but was bit by the bug in a round-about way when he helped a nephew that was racing Hornets a couple of years ago. As Rick explained it this sport tends to get the juices flowing whether youre a driver, a fan, an owner or a support person, when youre hooked, youre hooked. Rick knew from the first moment he stepped on to the track that he would become more than just an observer. Rick teamed up with an up and coming driver, Andy Jones, and as they say the rest is history. Andy will be competing in his third season of sprint car racing for the Mastell Brothers Racing Team in 2012. For Rick, meeting Ron Bernhagen in the fall of 2010 was a god sent, as they both absolutely loved the adrenaline rush from being around the track and in the pits. It was just a matter of time that these guys would become friends and business partners. Together they look at St. Croix Valley Raceway as a good business opportunity, something that they can shape into a place that may not be a one size fits all, but a place that would fit many. The business partners are giving the track the facelift that it has needed for a long time. The racing community is already buzzing with excitement to see the track take on a new look, a new personality, and ultimately become one of the premier tracks in the area. As Rick Mastell stated, this is a work in progress and we are only in the early stages. There is a scheduled 36 month plan in place to make the track the place to race and to entertain the family. Although Rick Mastell is the proverbial new guy on the block, co-owner and weekly race promoter Ron Bernhagen has been on the scene for several decades. Ron has been a life-long race fan and in 2001 became part of the ownership group at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Ron is also one of the founders and current President of the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS). From an experience level, Ron has seen it from both sides. Ron stated that, sprint car racing has usually struggled in this area for the past 30 years, but sprint car racing is gaining momentum with the UMSS leading the way. The winged sprints will be in their fourth season while the new Trawww.WheelsofThunder.net Page 55

mier dirt tracks in the Upper Midwest. The mile dirt oval will be the place to be on Friday nights with the season opener scheduled for Friday May 11th for the first Thunder in the Valley program. The season opener will include the usual weekly classes of UMSS Traditional Sprint Cars, UMSS Micro Sprints, WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Future IVs plus the first of five appearances of the UMSS Winged Sprint Cars along with the Northern Vintage Race cars.

May 2012

Why let the kids have all the fun, so on June 8th its You Be The Driver Night. Yes, you the race fans, get to drive your prized possession around the oval to get the feel of what it is like to be a competitor. June 8th also features the Traditional 40, a 40 lap feature race with an increased purse for the TSCS non-winged sprint cars. The track also is sensitive on race fans needing a little humor every now and then, so on June 15th youll get to witness first-hand the hilarious 2012 version of Ben Hurs chariot race with the trailer races. This is an event that you definitely do not want to miss. Likely one of the biggest events of the 2012 racing season will be the 1st Annual Jack Links Open Wheel Nationals on June 29 featuring the popular local area modified class along with the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, UMSS winged sprints and the TSCS non-winged sprints. Another nonmiss event in addition to the always exciting Friday night racing program is the spectacular July 6th Fireworks Extravaganza where the kids will get to go on the track for an autograph session. July rounds out with an awesome event on the 27th with the IRA 410 Outlaw Sprints making their first-ever appearance at St. Croix Valley Raceway along with the TSCS sprints. August brings to SCVR on the 17th an event that will surely be popular with area fans and students, the School Bus Crash-ARama and School Bus Races. The season concludes in September with a Friday-Sat-

ditional Sprint Car Series (TSCS) for nonwinged sprints will start its second season in 2012. Partnering up with Rick Mastell and purchasing the St. Croix Valley Raceway in 2011, this further helped put sprint car racing back on the weekly radar screen. St. Croix Valley Raceway runs the TSCS sprints weekly along with the UMSS Micro Sprints. Several appearances each season by the UMSS winged sprints help make this an open wheel race fans dream. The intention is to make the experience at SCVR different from other tracks. From the time the fan walks through the door, to the prepping of the track, and how the staff treats the drivers and race fans, the intention is to make it the place to be on Friday nights. We are putting our financial resources into the track so the fans and drivers have a great facility to come out and enjoy. We are set on making this track different from the other dirt tracks. Along with Rick and Ron, the SCVR team consists of Marketing and Promotion Director Dan Jordan. Dan is like a kid waiting for Christmas, as you can see the twinkle in his eye when he talks about the future of the track. Just talking to Dan for a few hours, I could see why they chose Dan to be the guy to help promote the St Croix Valley Raceway. Dan is as passionate as the owners. From my perspective in a sense, the whole team feels like they own a piece of the raceway. Thats what makes businesses successful. The team was so busy I literally walked with Dan, as he continuously walked around the newly laid dirt which makes up the mile track. Dan is sure that this track will be the one to schedule all your Friday nights at with family and friends. Speaking of family, this track will emphasize the im-

portance of including all of the family. The track will host a full complement of concessions including beer and pop, a higher end quality of hot dogs, brats, and chicken fingers. I was getting hungry just talking about. The scheduled events include five Friday nights of Thunder in the Valley featuring the UMSS winged sprints. On June 1st the Raceway will have the first of two Kids Night specials. All kids will get to ride in a race car that night. This night should become a family tradition on the schedule each season. The beauty of the kids event is exposing the kids to the sport of dirt track racing, and who knows you may have your future champion buckling up for a couple of laps around the oval on such as night.

urday doubleheader for the 1st Annual Badger State Championships. So how is that for your Friday night go-to place? You have it all from exciting sprint car racing, micro sprint racing, the modifieds, pure stocks and Future IVs providing family entertainment in a variety of weekly and special events. From the racing experts perspective, I had the pleasure of interviewing Greg Parent, the Upper Midwest Sprintcar Series (UMSS) Media Director and long-time area race fan and sponsor. Greg was a wealth of racing history and information. The interview was much like a Wikipedia search, as there wasnt one topic that Greg couldnt answer about the Midwest racing scene. From a personal experience, Greg could go back as far as 1971 when the track was used as a half-mile snowmobile track until it was purchased by brothers Roger and Al Kobs in 1979 when they converted it to a dirt track and introduced the St. Croix Valley to auto racing at the facility in 1980. The Kobs are father and uncle to one of the St. Croix Valley Raceway team members and successful racer himself, Rick Kobs. As you can see, the track has a generation of experience. Back in the day, it was a place to go for the drivers and the fans, but it wasnt enough to keep the interest of the area racing community. The numbers dwindled and the track struggled on and off for several years. Years later the track changed hands again, but this time it lacked promotion and went into pausemode, which brings us to the new owners

team. When the track opens for practice and then for the 2012 racing season, fans and drivers will see right before their eyes the positive changes to the physical layout of the track and the on-going upgrades to the facility. Area racing enthusiasts will see the likes of UMSS drivers Andy Jones, 2011 UMSS Champion Jerry Richert Jr, 2011 UMSS co-rookies Anna Kouba and Chad Patterson, Scott Broty, Chris Graf, 2009 UMSS Rookie of the year and 2010 Champion Cody Hahn, to name a few of the many well-known drivers in the surrounding areas. Greg Parent is confident that the St. Croix Valley Raceway will be a huge success and continue to gain in favor amongst race fans and competitors alike. The future is bright for a track that just recently in an unknown status pending the purchase by Rick Mastell and Ron Bernhagen. So what will race fans see at the St. Croix Valley Raceway in 2012? Heres a preview of the weekly divisions. The UMSS Traditional Sprint Car Series is a featured division at St. Croix Valley Raceway. These non-winged sprint cars are fabricated from the ground up with tubular frames and high tech suspensions. Engines run on methanol and are mostly 360 cubic inches with a two barrel carburetor. They produce between 400 and 450 horsepower. Race fans will enjoy their signature style of "backing it into the corner" to find the fastest way around the track. Whether you are 12 years old or 70 years young, Micro Sprints are real race cars. Micro Sprints are a smaller version of a sprint car and a great way to get started in open wheel racing. They are chain driven and have high tech

and their team. When Rick and Ron bought the track in 2011, the weeds had taken over the oval. In just 10 days, they were able to get the facility into racing condition for the season opener on July 29. An amazing feat! But wait until you see the changes already made since last season! As I continued my interview with Greg Parent, much like the excitement I heard from Rick, Ron, and Dan, Greg was also flying high. Greg said, This is the shot in the arm the racing community needed in this area and especially for the sprint car racing community. Drivers and sponsors are already lining up to compete at the St. Croix Valley Raceway. The racing community is a pretty smart bunch, and they can see the commitment and promotion from Rick Mastell, Ron Bernhagen and their

suspensions. Utilizing a 600cc motorcycle engine, they produce around 115 horsepower and run on methanol. Weighing in at about 775 pounds, with driver, Micro Sprints can reach speeds up to 90 mph. The Future IV division (also known as Hornets at other area tracks) provides a great opportunity for new racers to get on the track. These front wheel drive, fourcylinder cars are inexpensive to buy and even less costly to get race-ready. Dont let their diminutive cost fool you. Their front wheel drive drive trains make them nearly impossible to spin out and provide some of the best three and four wide racing youll ever see! The Wissota Midwest Modified division is an open wheel car based on an O.E.M. production frame. They sport aerodynamic rear body structures, high performance V-8 engines and racing rear ends. They run on pump gas, racing gas or ethanol and weigh a minimum of 2600 pounds. The Pure Stock division is a step up from the Future IV division. The Pure Stock division allows the new racer another economical choice to go racing. They utilize a stock produc-

tion frame, body, transmission, suspension and a mostly stock 305 cubic inch engine. These cars started life on the streets but now have new life on the track. So hows that for a menu of excitement and variety? Rick and Ron are also focused on the drivers seasoned and novice. Most of these machines are cost effective and can be built and maintained for an investment that is relatively economical by racing terms. The St Croix Raceway Team is literally covering all the bases. They have a passion for racing and family entertainment. The SCVR Family Pack gets 2 adults and 4 kids in for $25.00. Do the math. You cant take the family to the movies for less than that. And like the theater, you will see a variety of events and entertainment, practically something different on the schedule every week. You wouldnt want to see the same movie every week, so why see the same race, events, or entertainment. SCVR has their weekly classes and much more during the 2012 season. What a class act. Wheels of Thunder will be covering the events from start to finish. We know that

St. Croix Valley Raceway will be a huge success. It is early enough in the season that you can pencil in several events, and the surrounding area is absolutely breathtaking. Take a drive to St. Croix Valley Raceway on Fridays for some of the awesome sights, and then make your way over to grandstand. And if youre looking to entertain family, friends, or clients, take them along too. You will be glad you did. Watch for detailed monthly reports and updates from the St. Croix Valley Raceway. Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines! Best of luck to all involved for a successful 2012 season and beyond. To contact St. Croix Valley Raceway, they are located at 2014 160th Ave, St Croix Falls, Wisconsin, or check out the season schedule by visiting their website at www.scvraceway.com or like them on Facebook. Q.

Dave W., Rochester, MN The Hayabusa does have trouble with air being trapped in the sytem. There are a few tricks that can help you eliminate guessing. If the thermostat is sticking it will overheat when it is going down the road as well as when it is idling. If it is air in the system you should be able to burp the cooling system with the use of the use of a self filling funnel and bleeding the cooling system. Things that should be checked proper air flow through the radiator, Does the cooling fan come on? Inspection should include: 1. Checking coolant level 2. Do all the hoses get hot? 3. Does the entire radiator get hot? 4. Does the cooling fan come on? On the left side of the radiator there is a coolant temp sensor switch that turns the fan on when it is hot. This can easily be test by shorting accross the terminal and checking the cooling fan to see if it comes on. If it does come on and the coolant level is properly filled. The problem is likely that switch. If it does not come on check the power supply and ground curcuit to the fan. All of this testing can be time consuming but testing beats guessing. Dear Traci, I do believe I can help. Modern automatic transmissions can range from no shifting as seen in the continuously variable transmission (CVT) to 3, 4, 5 and 6 speed transmissions. One thing in common with them all is the use of the torque converters that employ hydraulic driven, partial lock up and full lock up converters, which leads to the problem you describe when the torque converter is at rest the clutch is in full lock up and it relies on hydraulic pressure to release the locking clutch. Diagnosis should include testing transmission hydraulic pressure. Repair will likely include replacing the torque converter and possibly the pump. This repair will also include inspecting and replacing all the seals throughout the transmission. An informed car owner should ask a professional technician to show you test result and explain the extent on their recommended repair. y yhes, ASE certified Master Technician

f you ask most teenagers to tell you about their role models they will more than likely tell you about an individual in professional sports, music or someone who made millions in business. That is not the case with Cody Engstrand of Luck, WI. When this question came up the first person he mentioned is his dad.

The Next Generation of Watercross
Written by Josh Moen

Cody races for the IWA. The IWA (International Watercross Association) a nonprofit racing organization founded by, and owned by its membership. Now at the age of 16 he is getting ready to kick off the 2012 season in Moose Lake, MN. He started making waves in 2010 by finishing third in the 800 Stock Drags. This achievement helped him get the Most Improved Driver award for that year. He moved up to Semi Pro Stock ovals while still doing drags. Later in 2011 he moved up again to Pro Stock Ovals. This class does not allow him to race Stock Drags. Thats fine with Cody. Moving up in class is something he is really proud of and plans to keep moving all the way to the top.

member Herb Yancey and Veteran Driver Scott Mosher. This is a long way off though. For now Cody just plans to race locally. Riding a snowmobile across the water is no easy task. There is a lot of skill and knowledge required to make it all the way across the pond without losing your sled to the bottom. Cody will tell you the first time running across the pond is pretty nerveracking. I was shaking the whole way across, but it was such a great feeling once I made it. The nerviness of riding on a lake has subsided to an energy rush. Ive pretty much gotten used to being on the water, its just exciting now. He says. The sled Cody uses is a 2005 Polaris RMK. Its my dads trail sled he said. This sled is not just for watercross, the parts are changed out in the fall and spring so the sled can run in both winter and summer. Its just bolt on parts. All the fabrication is there so we just have to switch out the parts; it just works. Sledding is something the whole family loves. This makes for the perfect sport to invest in. When you have a snowless winter like this past year you can still use the sled to get on the pond. Cody does most of the mechanical work

This is the man who has been a supportive mentor to Cody by helping him became everything hes has ever wanted to be in the world of Watercross. By following in his dads footsteps Cody, along with his brother Cole, is becoming the next generation of champions in this unusual and exciting sport.

When asked about other goals Cody chuckled and said not sinking! Sinking is just part of running a non-floating vehicle on the water. Were all going to sink at some point. He said Once you start going down theres nothing you can do but wait to be pulled out. With all joking aside, his main goal is to with the Pro Stock World Championship. There is also another watercross outfit on the east coast he would like to try. The EWA (Eastern Watercross Association) is located in New York and cofounded by Snowmobile Hall of Fame

himself. He has learned how everything goes together so he can do the work himself. He still relies on his dad to do the fine tuning though. He is the brains behind everything; he just knows how it all works and I am thankful for that. Cody says. Once the sled is ready to go the next goal is to find somewhere to practice. This can be challenging since riding on open water is illegal in some counties. It is illegal to sled on water in neighboring Burnett County. You need a special permit in order to ride on a pond. Cody said. There is a pond about four miles from home where his dad will take him if they have a permit. Sometimes you just drive around looking for a practice spot. He then noted that some races do have practice ponds in which they will allow drivers to practice. We just kind of go wherever we can. He said. I havent

found a practice pond to ride on yet this year, but Im looking. Cody also plays football and baseball. This can sometimes get in the way of practicing watercross, but he doesnt mind. The first watercross race of the season is the first weekend before school gets out. Well usually leave after school on Friday and be back on Sunday so I can then get back to school on Monday. He said. We seem to always have a Friday football game in the fall of the last race of the season. So we have to get up early the next Saturday to drive to the race. That makes for a busy weekend. On race day Cody likes to sit back and take in all the races. I like to watch Chad Maki. Hes my favorite watercross racer; thats who I keep my eye on. He also enjoys watching with dad and getting more advice. He knows racing really well and tells me whats going to happen and how to handle it. He knows that getting his dads advice is the key to his success. If there were any tips he would give to othPage 62

ers who would like to get into this sport he tells me Make sure you connect with someone who has some knowledge of what is going on, what to watch for, how to handle certain situations. This is not something just anybody can go out and do. He continues Dont do this alone; it can be dangerous. You must have someone watching in case something goes wrong so dont go out on the pond unless you have a retriever. Cody has learned you will sink sometime so you need to have a way to get your sled out. He is learning everything from his dad who raced in this sport for about eleven years. Without his advice I would not be where I am right now. In closing Cody wanted to give a special thanks to his dad for helping him get started and being there for him every step on the way. Thats where all my knowl-

edge comes from. He said. On race weekends its not all about watercross. The whole family including grandparents pack up the campers so they can spend a week-

end enjoying each others company. He is so fortunate to have a family supporting him as he becomes the next generation in watercross.

along. If not your chaps and leather or nylon jacket will do the job.As your leaving Duluth you have two different routes you can take to get to Two Harbors. The quickest is to stay on Hwy 61, its a divided highway so you dont have to worry about traffic. The other is the North Shore Scenic Byway. I recommend you take this way going up, just in case your in a hurry to head home. This drive is well worth the extra time. Once you get into Two Harbors you will find this to be a busy town. Whatever you need you will find it in Two Harbors, including shopping for the ladies. We always take the time to stop at Black Woods Family Bar and Grill. They have fantastic Bloody Marys. The trip from Two Harbors and along the North Shore will show you some fantastic overlooks of Lake Superior. You will find several places to pull over and park, most of them are designed this way because of the scenic views. Some stops will also give you places to swim, walk the shoreline, picnic areas and photo opportunities. One thing you do need to remember is that people will stop their vehicles and not pull over far enough, or the people are busy looking at the lake and forget about their driving skills or lack thereof. So just remember to be ready for anything. You will also find that in several areas vehicles will be parked on both sides and they will be walking back and forth across the road. The first area that you come to and its well worth stopping for is Gooseberry Falls. It is a high tourist area but honestly, its another reason to get off the bike and stretch. They have bathrooms and its a short walk to the falls. Once you leave this area you will next come across Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. If you have never been close to or in a lighthouse this is indeed the one you need to stop and see. You are allowed inside the lighthouse and they do have guides and exhibits for you to look at.Moving up the shoreline, you will come across areas where you will no longer see Lake Superior, but no worry because the ride is beautiful and so is the scenery. You will come across several small towns and points of interest; its all about how much time you have and how far you want to travel in a day. I usually travel up to the

The riding season has now begun! Yes. there are still days its cold, but for the most part its time to ride and start planning rides for the season! I dont know about the rest of you but if I have a weekend free or a few days off during the week, my favorite place to ride is Minnesotas North Shore. For me living in Baldwin, WI, I usually travel North up Hwy 35 just out of St. Croix Falls and head toward Superior, its a beautiful ride and gives you a chance to see deer and even a bear. Once in the Superior and Duluth area there are plenty of hotels to choose from. If you get a chance to stay at the Duluth Radisson or even if your looking for something to eat or drink, do yourself a favor and go to the top floor of the Radisson. The floor by the windows revolve. They have either a dining area or if your looking for just a place to sit this is it. As the floor revolves it gives you a chance to view the Duluth area including beautiful Lake Superior and the bridges. You will also have a chance to view a ship coming into or leaving port. No matter where you stay, Duluth or Superior you will find excellent dining and entertainment. I have a friend that owns Frankies Bar on Tower Street in Superior so this is a must stop for me.To travel up the North Shore, you must remember that on this trip you have to be prepared for any type of weather. You can leave Duluth when its 70 and sunny and by the time you get up to the Grand Marais area it could be raining and colder. So if you have the room a rain coat is always a good thing to bring

shopping will do you good otherwise your going to pay regular price for your alcohol and tobacco needs. On one of our trips up this way, one of the ladies stated she has never been to Canada or the Canadian Border. So for us what a great photo opportunity. We parked our bikes next to the Welcome to Canada sign. Typically it wouldnt be a big deal but we had to go back through US Customs to return home. Luckily we encountered a US Customs Agent with a sense of humor. Time to head back to Duluth for our lodging and entertainment. I guarantee you that I have not covered everything on this beautiful trip, you really must go check it out for yourself. I suggest you stay somewhere along the way and make at least a two day trip of it. There is plenty of camping areas along the way. Keep your eyes open for animals, there are a lot of deer and even a chance of a moose near the Grand Marais area and north. Of course please be careful of the people walking across the road and sightseers while driving. Enjoy your ride.

Canadian Border and then return home the same day. One area that is well worth stopping is Lutsen. Lutsen is well known for winter skiing, but did you know its also very active in the summer? Here you will find excellent hiking, biking trails (non motorized), and the Alpine Slide. The Alpine Slide is a half mile track and is a lot of fun. If you take the tramway to the winter ski area, you will enjoy the beautiful ride and you will also find that the chalet at the top of the hill has food and beverages. Also on the main road you will find miniature golf and shopping. If youre looking for some serious shopping and have extra room to pack things on the bike then the next stop should be Grand Marais. This beautiful village is settled right on Lake Superior and it definitely does have everything to offer you. Here you will find lodging, restaurants (from casual to elegant), gift shops, and a very beautiful view of Lake Superior. Grand Marais does have sandy beaches and a very picturesque light house overlooking Lake Superior. The very last stop before you reach the Canadian Border is Grand Portage. Here you can stop in at the casino and try your luck. Moving on a few short miles you come to Rydens Duty Free

Store. This is your turn around area before the Canadian Border. Here you can gas up, eat and yes more shopping. If youre going to go across the border than the duty free

WELCOME TO MAY - KICKOFF TO SUMMER!

Welcome to May, the kickoff to summer! A great month to get your motorcycle odometer spinning. Lets go for a ride and see how Minnesota is doing. I think Ill ride the Softail today. The high handlebars are more comfortable than the other bike. A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota got rid of the ridiculous handlebar height law back in 1999, so now motorcyclists are free to alter the ride to match the rider. Check the tire pressures - I learned that at the Experienced Riders Course my A.B.A.T.E. chapter sponsored. After putting on the riding gear of my choice (since 1977 Minnesota motorcyclists have been free to decide what is appropriate while riding), I hit the button and head out on the road. Nothing relieves tension and stress like riding on a sunny day in May. Its no wonder that bikers are a friendly bunch! Looks like flashing lights up ahead, I better move to the other lane (remember to always move over for emergency vehicles). Yup, a squad car and an ambulance. Two vehicles have crashed into each other and it looks bad. Hope no kids are involved. But if there are, chances are good that the EMTs will give them one of A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesotas Buddy Bears. For 20 years A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has used proceeds from their charitable gambling license to purchase teddy bears that are used to calm and comfort kids who have been in a traumatic experience such as a crash or house fire.

Back up to speed for a few miles and then take a left at the lights. Still waiting, but I am not getting a green arrow. No problem, motorcyclists can proceed in situations where the traffic signal does not recognize the weight of a motorcycle or is malfunctioning. A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota took care of that legislatively too. At the next intersection I see something that always makes me nervous. A teenage driver is at the stop sign and I wonder if he sees me. If he pulls out in front of me there will not be much time to react. But he makes eye contact with me and the car remains motionless until I pass. I wonder if Mr. Teenagers driver training class included motorcycle awareness? For over 20 years A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota volunteers have taught the Share the Road program. Our members spend a couple hours explaining to students taking

their drivers training class why it is important to watch for motorcyclists while driving. My life may have just been saved because the driver I encountered on the road was trained by A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota volunteers. After many hours on the road I am back in front of my garage door safe and in a great mood. Reflecting on my day I am amazed at the impact A.B.A.T.E. of Minnesota has made on almost every part of my ride. All for only the $20 cost of a membership. Amazing!

ver the last year I have had the opportunity to interview and write many interesting stories for Wheels of Thunder. Some of these stories focused on the great American dream, family owned businesses. How many of you that have a traditional job would give it up for one that YOU could have control of YOUR own destiny? Its what we all call the great American dream. I am honored to have been chosen to write a story on that very dream; however this dream is just a bit north of the American border. I would like to welcome our first Canadian Advertiser, Blue Jay Tackle owned and operated by Tom and Laura Balcom of Thunder Bay, Ontario. For those of you that are not familiar with the Canadian provinces and cities, Thunder Bay is located just northeast of the Minnesota and Wisconsin border. I can tell you first hand Thunder Bay is a beautiful haven for the outdoor enthusiast.

and Laura found themselves unhappy in their current professions. Tom was a financial advisor and Laura was in accounting. The introduction to Blue Jay Tackle was a breath of fresh air, much of that had to do with them being seasoned business owners. Basically they were not new to business ventures. The couple had a vision that they could make this company grow. Grow they did, shortly after taking over Blue Jay Tackle they had an opportunity to spread their wings. The expansion led them to other popular Canadian Tire stores in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec as well as some area lodges, and sporting good stores. Why a Canadian Tire store? Laura explained what a Canadian Tire store was, The best way to explain it, its like a Wal-Mart, but with a conscience.

Blue Jay Tackle is a 100% Canadian owned corporation based out of Thunder Bay, Ontario Canada. It was formed in 1994 originally as part of an addition to the tackle section of a local sporting goods store. Shortly thereafter the local Canadian Tire stores began carrying the products. Tom and Laura bought the company in 2004. In the beginning of their new venture Tom and Laura operated the business on a part-time basis while working their regular jobs. Like many people that feel stuck in their jobs with no light at the end of the tunnel, Tom

So what separates Blue Jay Tackle from the competition? Blue Jay Tackle is asked for by name and recognized all over Canada and parts of the United States because of its superior quality, performance and variety. Every Blue Jay Tackle spinner is hand tied and only quality brand name components are used. These components were chosen for specific purposes. The combination of components and vivid colors makes Blue Jay Tackle the preferred spinner choice for most fishing enthusiasts. The majority of the components come from the states; however, the product is assembled in Thunder Bay. I asked specifically about what components make Blue Jay Tackle the rock star of the spinner world. For starters all of their spinners are tied with Rosco swivels to prevent line twist and make it easy to tie on the main line. Unlike the competition who just put a loop at the end of their spinner. Rosco has been manufacturing terminal tackle since 1926 and is the leader in the in-

that they have the most versatile combination of beads and blades. They have a wide range of bead colors that start from the basic chartreuse to shiny metallic beads, some of which are exclusive to Blue Jay. The interchangeable clevis feature has given Blue Jay Tackle their most positive feedback to date. It allows you to change the blade on your spinner without having to cut your line and retie the rig. The blade simply snaps off and another one can be put on within seconds. The line used is Sufix line; this is used for two reasons. Sufix is a premium line that is very strong and does not impede the action of the spinner. Most companies use 40lb test bulk line which is too heavy to allow the spinner to do its job. Put those components all together and you have one of the best rigs ever made. You can almost envision hitting fish after fish. Ultra violet light penetrates water; it is even present on cloudy days. Their BlueBrite UV Jigs uses ultra violet light to glow up to 200 times brighter than glow in the dark paint. These jigs are new to Canada and Blue Jay is the first to bring them to their customers. This paint never needs recharging like glow in the dark does and can glow in the water down to 200 feet depending on water

Blue Jay Tackles video on Facebook showing the durability of the Blue-Bright UV Jigs you will be amazed. A team from Blue Jay Tackle travels each year to see their customers. They spoke to their test guides, customers and dealers about changing to blister packaging. They got a very strong negative reaction from all facets. The customers love the fact that they can take their fishing tackle and put it back in a reusable box, it has reduced "tackle box mess" tremendously. If you choose not to use the package then it can be recycled. Tom and Laura shaped the company to where it is today, but they havent done it alone. This is a craft that requires preci-

dustry. Blue Jay uses VMC hooks, not much has to be said about this well known name. The sharpness and hook setting power is superior to that of the competition.

When it comes to beads and blades Blue Jay has researched the market and found
May 2012

clarity. The best feature is that they are chip resistant. You can literally take a hammer to the jig head and flatten it, the paint may crack because the shape of the head has changed but it wont chip. This is truly an amazing product that has had phenomenal fishing results. Check out

sion and patience when assembling the perfect rig. Assembling the perfect rig is accomplished with a small dedicated staff that included Lauras mom and dad, John and Eileen Pretto. John born in Italy, had his dream of owning his own company and had owned a successful Canadian contracting company but had retired. Like any

good parents would do, you help out your children. In this case John and Eileen jumped right in with Blue Jay Tackle. John was amazed and intrigued with Blue Jay Tackle. As Laura tells it, he even designed a series of wheels to cut line for us. It is really neat. He was exceptionally proud of us. My Mom is also one of our tyers. Tying helps keep the dexterity in her hands. Now thats what I would call a true family business. Sadly John passed away a few months ago, but his dream of seeing

Blue Jay Tackle succeed in the United States is starting to come to light. Laura says. One thing my Dad wanted to see was us branch out into the states so to us it is much more than increasing our business. I am confident that John Pretto has a twinkle in his eye and that twinkle is the sparkle off the rigs he assembled. Blue Jay Tackle has committed to giving back to the people that have got them where they are today. You can often see Tom and Laura at many of the Canadian fishing tournaments. Their appearance at these events goes way beyond the marketing of their products. Some of these tournaments are geared specifically towards the kids. Tom and Laura ensure that every kid receives 2 to 3 pieces of Blue Jay Tackle, that I am sure they will cherish as some of their first jigs and spinners that may have just caught their first fish. Think about it, how many of you can vividly remember your first fish you ever caught? I can, just like it was yesterday! If you are living or visiting Canada, go to any participating Canadian Tire company store you will always find a fully stocked rack of Blue Jay Tackle. Ordering from the Blue Jay Tackle website is almost as easy as visiting a Canadian Tire store or one of the other ten Bait and Tackle stores throughout Canada. Blue Jay is committed in turning orders around quickly. Tom and Laura know the importance of customer service. Thats why when orders are placed you can be sure that you will have your Blue Jay Tackle hitting the water in a few short days.

Visit the website at www.bluejaytackle.com and see for yourself or look them up on Facebook at Blue Jay Tackle. Tom, Laura and their parents vision of living the dream is almost a reality. The product is starting to make it to the United States waters, but the real dream of making it to the shelves in the US Market place is a slow process. There is good news; Thorne Brothers Custom Rod and Reel will be the first American business to take on Blue Jay Tackle. They are located at 10091 Central Ave NE, Blaine, Minnesota. I am telling you these products will be flying off the shelf, and into the water. Before you know it the ice will be melted and we will all be on the banks, on the docks, or in a boat looking to land that big one. Just make sure your tackle box is loaded up with your Blue Jay Tackle.

Wine Country... In Minnesota?

pring has been trying to come to the forefront quite a few times already this year. Mark Hedin, owner of White Rabbit Vineyards & Winery has been watching his vines closely to see if there will be any issues with his vineyard for the upcoming season. When I asked how the name came about, Mark had a smile on his face as he said, "I don't quite recall all the details, only that Jefferson Airplane was cranked up in the background, a copy of 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' lay nearby, and the smell of fermenting fruit permeated the 'White Rabbit' premises. With wine names like 'Dust Bunnies' and 'O-Positive', this is no ordinary rabbit hole."
What started as a hobby for Mark in 1988 turn into an official licensed winery in 2007. Mark said as far as he knows, he is the smallest legal winery in the state, but because he enjoys it so much he has no problem holding that title. Mark admits he is not in it to compete with the multimillion dollar mega-wineries in the industry, and as we walked through the less than one acre of grape vines, raspberry bushes, and rhubarb patches I couldn't help but
Page 76

smile to think how success can happen on all different levels. I have to admit when I first set out to find a winery, the last place I expected to find one would be in Andover, Minnesota. The thought of someone having a successful winery in a Minneapolis suburb and in a place that can be 80 one day and snowing the next baffled me. Becoming an official winery was due to his hobby turning into something that became more of a demand

for his product. He held back no shame as he told me that when he first started out his product left the taste buds less than satisfied; but as time went and experience grew others showed more and more interest in his products. He knew it was time to take the next step. The vineyard is proud to be using wine grapes that have been bred specifically for Minnesota's climate by the University of Minnesota and Elmer Swenson. the wines are made from 100% Minnesota grown fruit. These hardy grapes, along with Mark's sense of what makes great tasting wines has contributed to his success. He said it is definitely about patience when it comes to wine, with a lot of tasting and testing. White Rabbit creates traditional grape wines and other fruit wines, carrying both whites and reds of sweet and dry tastes, and also is one of the few Minnesota wineries producing sparkling wines. As I spoke to Mark I was impressed that he had taken the time to develop a wine to compliment numerous varieties of meals as well as certain occasions. The proof of his success is not in just one bottle. He said his supply and demand are divided quite evenly among his options of flavors. As for now Mark says he is content with how things are going and the size of his operation, but as time goes by he isn't making any promises that things wont change down the road. Mark offers his wines directly from the winery and has three of his creations that are 'house' wines at Woodsman's Grill in downtown Anoka, Minnesota. They are perfect compliments to the diner's menu which is full of different kinds of game animals. White Rabbit Winery is open by appointment year around and you can contact them at 763-439-4748, by visiting www.wrwine.com or on Facebook at White Rabbit Winery. You can schedule your own wine tasting and see for yourself that the lack of size has no negative impact on the abundance of taste when it comes to White Rabbit Vineyards & Winery! Go try their prize winning creations!
