Travel
When you are travelling to and from school you should be properly dressed in school uniform, ties should be done up and shirts should be tucked in. Remember you are an ambassador of the School and any silly or disruptive behaviour not only reflects badly on yourself but also on the School. Please behave in a safe and responsible manner. If you are travelling to school by bicycle, cycle helmets are strongly recommended.
Clubs and sports activities take place regularly at lunchtime and after school. The morning and afternoon sessions begin with Registration, during which the Form Tutor notes which pupils are present or absent. It is very important that you arrive punctually for registration so that you are not marked late or absent. All pupils are expected to be present in the form room and ready for registration at 8.35am and 2.15pm. (See also the section Attendance and Punctuality on page 11).
Consultation
We are keen that all pupils should settle in happily and reach their full potential in all aspects of school life. Should the progress and/or the conduct of any pupil give rise to concern, parents will be notified and the student may be placed on report. In some cases, parents may be asked to come to the School to discuss the matter. Any parents who wish to discuss any aspect of their childs well-being at school should refer the matter, in the first instance, to the Form Tutor or to Mrs Palmer. It would be convenient, whenever possible, if parents contacted the school first to make an appointment.
Assemblies
A main school assembly is held every Monday and Friday morning. Throughout the week other assemblies are held:
House Assembly Lower School, Middle School Assembly Form Assembly, which pupils take turns to lead.
Details are on the assemblies list issued to each Form Tutor at the start of each term.
Worship will take place there as an alternative to our main assembly. Different types of worship will take place - a communion service, a Taize style service and informal worship led by Matt Wild and the team from CROPS. This worship is intended to be accessible to all denominations, additionally parents are very welcome to attend.
Cathedral Services
It is expected that all pupils and teaching staff will attend these. You should walk to and from the Cathedral along the agreed route with your Form Tutor and Pastoral Prefects. You should exercise great consideration with regard to other pedestrians en route.
When your parents give you cash or a cheque to load your card, bring the envelope to the Finance Office before registration in the morning. That will mean that your card will be credited before break time and you will be able to purchase food from the Dining Room. You may bring a packed lunch if you prefer.
Each time the card is swiped you will see the balance that remains on the account. If your balance is getting low, request that your parents give you a cheque in good time to top up your card.If you lose your card 8 | Year 7 Pupil Handbook
you must report it immediately to the Finance Office. A temporary card will be issued until yours is found or a replacement card is ordered at a charge of 2.00. There is no need to go hungry: make sure you have something to eat whilst you are in school. You need the energy to be able to learn effectively and see you through the day. All hot food must be consumed in the Dining Room. You are allowed to eat packed food in the following places: Dining Room, Form Room and outside. You are not allowed to eat in the corridor. Chewing gum is not allowed in school at all.
Please ensure you bring your swipe card to school every day. (The card also acts as a key enabling you to gain access to different parts of the School. Without the card, you will be unable to get into some areas of the school).
End of School
3.40pm marks the end of the normal school day. If you have no real reason to stay in school beyond this time, you should leave the premises quickly and quietly and make your way home in a safe and sensible manner. However you are free to stay in school, provided you are involved in some useful activity under the direct supervision of a teacher and that you have told your parents where you are and what time you will be home or ready to be picked up by them. Examples of such useful Year 7 Pupil Handbook| 9
Taking part in games fixtures or practices Using the Library or the Careers Library until 4.15pm Rehearsing for an Assembly, drama production or music performance Using the computers in the ICT suite.
Games
If you are not doing Games for any reason you must see the member of the PE staff who would normally take you for Games. Do not leave this to just before the lesson starts because staff may have already left the school to travel to the off-site pitches/facilities. If you are not able to do games because of illness or injury, then you should give an excuse note, written by your parents, to the member of staff concerned. They will tell you what to do next. Depending upon the reason for your nonparticipation, you may be given other tasks to perform. Do not assume you are free to sit in the Library or around the School. Your absence from Games will be recorded as in every other lesson. You must wear proper PE kit for lessons. You will have the opportunity to deposit valuables, such as mobile phones, in a safe place.
Fire Alarm
Sometimes the normal school routine is interrupted by a fire-drill or other emergency alarm. When the fire alarm sounds: Leave the building by the nearest exit and line up with your form tutor as instructed. Listen to the instructions carefully and stand still and quiet. Do not go back into the building for any reason at all, until you are told to do so by your tutor. Full details of the school evacuation procedure can be found on display in all the classrooms.
If you miss the registration period through lateness you must sign in at Pupil Reception immediately on your arrival at school. It is very important that the school attendance records show correctly who is in school, in case there is an emergency. If you are regularly late or absent it will be followed up by a member of staff and your parents will be contacted. The Education Attendance Officer may be informed if the problem persists.
Absence
If you are going to be absent from school because of illness or for some other reason, please follow these guidelines:
If the absence is known about in advance, ask your parents to write a letter of explanation to your Form Tutor. Please be aware that the Headteacher is the only person who can authorise an absence and that absence due to holidays/time off outside school holidays may well go down on your record as unauthorised. Your parents must contact the Headteacher if they are seeking permission for you to be away from school for any reason other than medical. If it is a sudden absence (eg because of illness or accident) ask your parents/guardian to telephone the school on the first day of absence before 9am and each day of absence thereafter. The school has an answerphone that is available for your parents to leave messages on from 4pm to 8am the following morning. When you return to school after an absence, ask your parents to Year 7 Pupil Handbook| 11
give you a note confirming the details (i.e. dates and reason for absence).
If you need to be absent from school for part of the day (e.g. dental appointment) bring a note and the appointment card to show to your Form Tutor (and the subject teacher, if you need to leave a lesson early) and see signing in/out below. You need to show your appointment card to Pupil Reception before you leave the building.
Signing Out/In
If you have to leave school for any reason during the day, you must sign out (and, if necessary, back in) on the VERICOOL screen which you will find on the wall just outside Pupil Reception. If this is not working then you must sign in/out on the relevant sheet that can be found on Mrs Serjeants desk.
Accidents or Illness
If you become ill or have an accident at school the first thing you must do is tell a teacher and then, if necessary, go to Pupil Reception. The Kings School does not supply any kind of medication. Medicines should only be brought into school where essential and will only be accepted if they have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber. If you are taking medication your parents must complete a Medical Consent Form, (this can be downloaded from the school website). It must be properly packaged with your name and given to Mrs Serjeant in Pupil Reception, with a note from your parents explaining what it is for, the correct dosage and the time it should be taken. You must then go to Pupil Reception at the appropriate time to take your medication. Students aged 13 or over may carry a one day supply of pain relieving medication. N.B. A one day supply consists of a maximum of two tablets. If you have an inhaler or epipen you must keep it with you at all times and a spare can be stored by Mrs Serjeant in Pupil reception if you wish, for emergencies. You must not phone or text to ask parents to collect you, if necessary, your parents will be contacted by the school and asked to collect you.
STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR
Standards of Behaviour
Prefects
Trustworthy and responsible pupils from the Sixth Form are appointed as Prefects, to help teachers look after certain parts of the School and to help you if you have a problem. They have duties and responsibilities and you must follow the instructions they give. You can recognise them by the black gowns they wear over their blazers.
Code of Conduct
Pupils and staff of The Kings School treat one another with respect and courtesy: their individual behaviour is orderly and civilised; they move calmly and efficiently from place to place, arriving punctually for their lessons and other appointments. The Kings School is a large community. During the day a large number of people work within the School. We, therefore, depend on each other to make the School run smoothly. Every member of the School should act in a responsible, polite, sensible manner, having respect for all other people and their property. This means that pupils should:
Move around the buildings in a quiet manner, keeping to the left where possible, not running, pushing or shouting. This may mean allowing people to pass or opening doors for others. Outside school, pupils must remember that they take the reputation of the School with them, wherever they go. Therefore, they should always act in ways which enhance our reputation. Speak politely to everyone. Follow requests made by staff and prefects. Keep the School neat and tidy. This includes putting all litter into the bins provided, keeping the furniture and walls free from graffiti, being careful with displays. Rooms should be left clean and tidy at the end of each lesson, breaks and lunch times. Eat and drink only in the dining room, form rooms or outside. Chewing gum is not acceptable anywhere. Not smoke in school hours and/or when wearing their school uniform. Year 7 Pupil Handbook| 13
Be correctly and smartly dressed in full school uniform from the time they leave home, to when they return. Pupils should change back into full uniform after all PE lessons. Arrive at lessons with all the items of the basic school equipment list plus all relevant exercise and text books. Sit correctly on chairs, and not tables. Meet all deadlines set for the completion and handing in of work. Thank members of staff when appropriate, e.g. following an out of school activity. Do not obstruct pavements, especially when waiting for buses, or walking to the Cathedral and Sports Fields. The classroom (including laboratories, Technology areas and the Hall) during lesson time is a place of work where there need to be rules to allow everyone to work safely, successfully and enjoyably. The computer facilities should be used for the educational purposes for which they are intended.
Either wait quietly outside the room and enter when told to do so by a member of staff or, if allowed, wait in a quiet and orderly manner in the room, until the teacher arrives. Take out all the books and equipment needed for the lesson, and put away all bags under the tables.
STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR
Listen to the teacher and other pupils in silence. Ask and answer questions by raising their hand, not by calling out. Work sensibly, not distracting or annoying others in the lesson. Not eat or drink during the lesson. Enter all homework instructions in their Homework Planners. At the end of a lesson only pack away when instructed by the teacher, and then wait to be dismissed.
STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones must be switched off during registration, assemblies and all lessons. If your phone rings or distracts others during these times it will be confiscated and only returned to you at the end of the day. Always leave your mobile in a secure place. When you are in PE/Games lessons, hand in your mobile along with other valuables for safekeeping by a member of staff.
Anti-Bullying Policy
A definition There are many definitions of bullying, but most have three things in common: it is deliberately hurtful behaviour it is repeated, often over a period of time it is difficult for those being bullied to defend themselves. Bullying can take many forms but three main types are: physical - hitting, kicking, taking of belongings verbal - name-calling, insulting, racist remarks indirect - spreading nasty stories about someone, excluding someone from social groups. Bullying is the abuse of power by a person (or group) who is somehow Year 7 Pupil Handbook| 15
stronger, resulting in some distress, harm or feeling of isolation. We believe that you are entitled to receive your education in a safe, caring empowering environment, free from fear and intimidation. The School will consider each Bullying incident individually and recognises that a variety of responses will be necessary to deal with incidents. Exclusion may be considered as a course of action if the bullying does not stop. Do not suffer in silence or allow others to. Tell someone and keep on telling until something is done. The Child Protection members of staff are:
Mrs H Birch, Mrs K Denman and Mrs C Palmer Cause for Concern
If a member of staff has a concern about you, your standard of work, attitude/ behaviour/effort or general welfare, they may instigate our four stage referral system. This will be passed to the Pupil Support Officer and the Pupil Development Manager. Someone will then contact you in an effort to help you solve the problem or overcome the difficulty. If it is a concern about behaviour or anything which contravenes the Code of Conduct then staff may use sanctions. Members of staff will try to help you understand, not only the reason for the sanction, but also ways of avoiding similar misdeeds in the future. Sanctions you might receive include:
STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR
A verbal reprimand (a telling off) a written record may be made in case you misbehave again. Detention Extra work or work to be done again with extra pieces added to it. Active Citizenship - useful work around school at break e.g. litter picking, cleaning table tops For more serious anti-social or disruptive behaviour you might expect sanctions which include: Withdrawal of privileges such as membership of school teams or attendance on trips.
STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR
Being placed on report or homework check. Your parents would be informed. Internal exclusion. You may not be allowed to attend certain lessons until the problem has been resolved and work completed. Temporary exclusion or suspension from school. In extreme cases, permanent exclusion from school. (In these cases the Local Education Authority will attempt to find you another school to attend.)
At the discretion of the school, your parents may be contacted and asked to visit the school to discuss the matter.
Positive Achievement
In addition to the everyday praise that students may get in lessons, the school operate a system that allows staff to award achievement points. This approach is to encourage pupils/students to achieve their very best. The points are given for a range of reasons (see categories list below), this emphasises both effort and the development of skills that the school feels are vital for young people in the 21st Century. The number of points awarded can be viewed on the summary reports sent home, as well as access through our online reporting. Students will receive achievement letters once certain thresholds have been reached. All points awarded count towards the overall House competition. Categories include:Leadership within Group Activities. Sustained Effort in Class/Persistency. Extra-Curricular involvement, to include:
Creativity/Taking Risks within Learning. Independent Research. Real Initiative/Applying Ideas from other Subjects.
Two working pens One red pen One pencil A ruler A rubber A sharpener A calculator A dictionary A Rough Book A Homework Planner File for extra papers Maths equipment In addition a lightweight flexible folder with some plastic wallets inside will be useful for transporting homework sheets.
All necessary books, exercise and text books should be taken to the lesson as appropriate. All pupils must be properly equipped for all lessons, including PE and practical subjects.
Personal Property
All property and clothing must be clearly and indelibly marked with the pupils name before being brought to school. Textbooks should be clearly named and watches, pens, etc., should have the name engraved 18 | Year 7 Pupil Handbook

or scratched on. All Year 7 pupils are offered a locker and a key and they are advised to store outdoor clothes, sports kit and some books in this. Money and valuables must be kept on the person: they must not be left in cloakrooms and classrooms. Any personal property found in the school should be handed in to Pupil Reception. If you have lost any property go to Mrs Serjeant in Pupil Reception to see if it has been handed in. The lost property is put on display every Thursday for students to claim belongings.
Money
You may be allowed to borrow money from the Finance Office in an emergency. If you need to borrow money you must first seek permission from Mr Elliott (the Deputy Headteacher). You will be asked to repay the debt the following school day. If you delay repayment you may not be allowed to borrow money in the future. Large sums of money should not normally be brought to school. If a large sum is brought for some specific purpose, it must be handed to staff or the Finance Office for safekeeping. During games and drama lessons, valuables should be handed to staff at the beginning of each lesson and collected at the end.

School Work
Whatever the level of your skills or abilities, always do your own personal best. Do not do anything which might interfere with, or disrupt, the work and effort of others.
Homework
Homework is expected from all pupils. This normally amounts to about an hour to an hour and a half per night in the Lower School. You must use your Homework Planner to organise homework. Form Tutors as well as parents, will check that you are using your planner correctly. Your parents should check and sign your planner every week.
Missed/Excused Lessons
Sometimes through no fault of your own (e.g. illness) you will miss lessons and the school work covered during those lessons. This could mean that there will be gaps in your knowledge and understanding of the subject concerned. This could seriously affect your progress and attainment. On other occasions if you are in school but need to be excused from a lesson for some reason, you must see the teacher whose lesson you will be missing, explain the situation and seek their permission. They will rarely refuse you, if you have seen them in advance and you are up-to-date with all your work for them. Communication is important, do not send messages with other people, assuming you have permission to miss a lesson. The following advice should help you avoid some of the problems of missed work:
SCHOOL WORK
If you know in advance that you are going to be away, make sure that you ask your subject teachers for suitable work to be completed during your absence. If you cannot see the teachers beforehand, ask your parents to telephone your Form Tutor or Pupil Support Officer to discuss how work can be obtained. Telephoning or e-mailing a friend is another useful way of keeping up-to-date with what you are missing at school. If you run out of set work to do, reading a good book is a valuable
ACTIVITIES PROGRAMME
activity, until further supplies of school work can be provided by the school.
When you return to school, see each of your teachers and work out a plan for bringing notes and exercise books up-to-date.
Activities Programme
There are lots of things going on at school:- clubs, team practices, orchestra and choir rehearsals to name but a few. Look at your planner, the noticeboards, bulletins and ask your teachers, so that you become familiar with all the opportunities available to you at school. All these activities are in addition to the normal curriculum and can help you gain more confidence and enrich your education. If you are representing the school away from the school, e.g. playing for a team or performing at the Cathedral, we would expect you to wear the correct school kit or uniform. Sometimes when you go on a school trip you are allowed to wear your own clothes. Your clothes should be smart but casual. No extreme fashions will be allowed. Make sure you check with a member of staff that your appearance is acceptable or you may not be allowed to take part in the activity.
Residential Trips
All Year 7s take part in a residential visit locally or a little further afield, to participate in a number of outdoor activities in their first summer term. This takes places during Activities Week in July. They are split into two groups: one departing Monday and returning on Wednesday and the second from Wednesday to Friday. The approximate cost of this trip is 140.
Pupil Post
All communications to parents via students are issued, either as a letter distributed in registration (for those parents who choose not to use the internet), or displayed on the school website.
