Pachim KTanim from Rabbi Yudin : In honor of Parashas Bereishis and the priviledge of starting again to study Torah:

At first glance, it is difficult to understand what was so bad about the snakes punishment? After all, Hashem kept his word, and provided dust for him which is in abundance and all about, thereby assuring the snake that he will always have ample food supply. The Kotzker and Rav Yitzchak Kalish of Vorka answer that the abundance of food is actually a curse for the snake. All creatures have a relationship with Hashem. In Tehilim (147:9) we read "He gives to an animal its food, to the young ravens that cry out". However, if the snake has an endless supply of food, he has no connection with Hashem, that is the greatest curse. Hashem basically said take your food and go, I don't want to hear from you again. In contrast, we recite the Bracha of Borei Nefashos, where we thank Hashem for "Vechesronon", for making us needy and deficient; thereby giving us as the Bracha continues (1) nourishment in this world, and (2) a relationship with Hashem, enabling us to attain a share in the next world.
