Every bellows assembly is helium tested to make sure that each one is of the highest quality, so you can be confident there will be no external stem leaks. The bellows seal design and testing meet or exceed the requirements of API598, API602, BS5352 and MSS SP-117 which require designs to be fatigue tested to prove reliability. In fact, we have so much confidence in our products that If you use these valves within these parameters, and within the ANSI Class pressure and temperature ratings, and the bellows fails from fatigue within 5 years after you buy it, we will send you a new valve or bellows assembly free of charge. All other terms and conditions are in accordance with Eagle America, Inc. Standard Terms and Conditions of Sale.
Maintenance, and Dorsey Moors, Swift Creek Chemical, began using a new valve called the eagle bellow seal steam valve with zero steam leakage and zero maintenance. "The valve is expensive," Peiper said, "but, oh so effective. The savings far outweigh the cost involved." Experience to date shows no steam leeks from the stem packing and no maintenance problems.

POWER ENGINEERING
FIELD NOTES
A program of valve replacement reduced valve maintenance needs "dramatically" at Consolidated Edison's Astoria station, according to Jay Koch, operations superintendent. Conventional packed globe and gate valves were replaced with bellows seal valves. The upgrade program, begun about 10 years ago, had two goals: to improve availability by incorporating state-of-the-art advances in hardware, and to create a safer, more pleasant working environment in the 1600-MW plant's five oil- and natural gas-fired units. Leaking glands were a problem in the packed globe and gate valves used throughout the station. Gland leaks resulted in the escape of steam and repeated accumulations of water on the floor and around major equipment. Despite intensive efforts, the maintenance crew was losing ground, says Koch. "We'd pack, tighten and repack glands. Then, after a relatively short length of time, we'd have to repack and tighten again, until stuffing boxes became wire-drawn or eroded and failed to hold the packing. Then, we'd replace the valves and the cycle would begin all over again." At first, it was believed that this condition could be corrected by

the use of live loading, accomplished by installing a series of Belleville washer nuts under the packing to supply constant pressure against the gland followers and automatically compensate for the effects of cycling pressures. However, this approach was soon rejected and a more permanent solution was sought. Bellows seal valves were then investigated and chosen, although at the time they were generally considered only for N-stamp applications in nuclear plants. Critical areas were taken first, such as steam trap lines and instrumentation offtakes for boilers, including drum level and steam pressure indication. Leaking packing glands in valves on the water side of drum level indication posed serious problems. Water at 650 F flashing to steam as it leaked into the atmosphere resulted in a lower differential reading than actually existed. Consequently, the false drum level signal could trigger feedwater flow to raise the water level to the automatic trip point, thus causing a false trip and shutdown of the unit. Valve replacements began with the installation of an Eagle Class 600 lb bellows seal globe valve from EG&G Sealol Eagle. on a 250-1b steam trap drain line, and Class 1500 lb bellows seal globe valves on offtakes for boiler gage glasses on steam drums. Results were "dramatic," according to Koch. The new valves required virtually no maintenance. Before the replacements, Astoria station had several unscheduled outages over a three-year period as a result of valve gland leakage, and outage work lists for each of the station's five units repeatedly showed 30 to 50% of the jobs were packing and valve maintenance items. Since the conversion, this figure has been reduced to less than 1%. Koch reports that the first bellows seal valve installed (on a 250-1b trap drain line) ten years ago has required no attention since it went into service. Conversion to bellows seal valves continues at Astoria station. The valves are being installed on some remaining pressurized systems, as well as on vacuum systems, condensate systems, hydrogen gas pressure reducing station, distribution manifolds and CO supplies for purging the generator.

FLUID HANDLING
compounds were prone to packing gland leaks and fugitive emissions. Positive containment and control of these hard-to-handle products was achieved by retrofitting the process with bellows seal valves. Many reactions and blending operations in the Multi-Products Department are carried out under vacuum. Steam siphons are used to draw the vacuums and bellows seal valves have replaced packed valves on the process lines to eliminate recurring steam leaks. In the Surfactant Department, a pharmaceutical grade base for a detergent requires that valves keep the base from leaking as well as
Figure 1. The design of the bellows seal valves makes them inherently leak-tight.
The Rohm & Haas plant in northeast Philadelphia maintains stringent measures for the protection of its personnel and the environment throughout its operations. All chemicals of a carcinogenic nature and those hazardous to humans or the environment are classified as "priority I" products and extreme care is taken to keep them contained at all times. The company manufactures a variety of chemicals, which are sold to an industry-wide market. Some 100 different products include agrichemicals, oil additives, ion-exchange resins and ingredients for floor waxes. Plant-wide upgrading About 6 years ago the company initiated a program to upgrade all valves used on priority 1 products throughout the plant's 5 departments. The action was triggered by recurring problems with conventional packed valves in use. A potentially dangerous situation had been created by leaking packing glands on chlorine valves used in a processing operation. The distributor for a valve company that regularly serviced the plant was consulted and recommended Class 300 pound ANSI carbon steel bellows seal valves. He pointed out that a metal bellows, which acts as the primary stem seal (Fig. 1) makes the valves inherently leak- by blocking the passage of fluids in or out.
CASE STUDIES
Smooth changeover of plug valves to bellows seal globe valves at Rhone Poulenc's pesticide plant in Institute, W Va., strengthened anti-pollution measures, significantly cut maintenance man-hours, downtime and product losses. Many hundreds of tons of chlorine are used annually in the production of pesticides at the 460-acre site. Storage, transfer and processing of the chlorine require miles of pipe and hundreds of valves. For many years, conventional packed ball, globe and globe plug valves were used for chlorine service. However, in the early 1980's, Rhone Poulenc decided to upgrade the safety, efficiency and economy of its chlorine handling operations. Deteriorated packings were causing leakage of chlorine from valve stems. Several hundred valves were involved. In addition to the plug valves in chlorine service, the plant was also using ANSI 600, 800 and 1500 Class metal bellows seal valves on such diverse and demanding services as steam and heat transfer fluids. Rhone Poulenc's engineers and the valve manufacturer's sales engineer had previously solved a leak problem of packed plug valves on a methyl mercap- line, which had to be opened daily for sampling of the extremely malodorous tracer gas. All the bellows seal valves in use had proven consistently dependable over a three-year period on severe
services. Engineers in the upgrading project started replacing plug valves on the chlorine line with ANSI 300 Class bellows seal globe valves. The valve is inherently leaktight. The bellows, welded to the stem above the disc and to the body (Figure 1), acts as the primary stem seal. Passage of fluids is completely blocked, in or out. In order to achieve the upgraded performance of the bellows sealed valves, engineers had to accommodate the difference in flange-to-flange dimensions between the conventional plug valves and the ANSI bellows seal valves. Considering the multiplicity of valves and the amount of pipe involved in the changeover, this could have meant a costly interruption of processing operations. Instead, the manufacturer supplied versions modified to meet ANSI dimensions.
Initially, the bellows seal valves were specified and supplied with forged carbon steel bodies, Inconel bellows and Monel trim. However, Tyson wanted an extra margin of protection against moisture in the liquid chlorine as delivered from its manufacturer. Rhone Poulenc selected all-Hastelloy bellows seals. All the valves used on the aboveground tanks, into which the liquid chlorine is off-loaded from the supplier's barge, have stems, discs, bellows and bellows holders of Hastelloy C-276. The valves are used on feed lines, and to control flow to liquid level gauges, pressure gauges, etc.
Figure 1. Metal bellows seal is specifically designed for chlorine handling applications requiring maximum corrosion resistance
The upgrading program is proceeding smoothly, with up to 500 plug valves throughout the plant slated for eventual replacement by bellows seal valves.

Pressure-Temperature Rating
Pressure-Temperature Ratings show the maximum allowable working pressures at the temperatures from -20 F to the maximum allowable for the materials. They are established by the stress calculations utilizing the minimum wall thickness and the maximum allowable stress of the materials at specified temperatures. Because the maximum allowable stress of any kind of material always decreases as the temperature increases, the maximum allowable working pressure for the component always decreases as the temperature increases, as shown on the tables. For your convenience, relevant portions of the American National Standard Institute B 16.34 -1996, Pressure Temperature Ratings are reproduced below:
