She took the lead sweeping other examinees over the Philippines garnering a score of 92.59 percent. Farshana, a fourth year Medical Laboratory Science student, decided to take the exam due to

reaking stigma. Changing primitive ideas. Unfolding new perspective, this was the goal of the recent HIV awareness symposium held at the SPC Philomene Labrecque Hall, headed by the film director Arthur Zata. The symposium is part of a campus caravan that tackles HIV issues in the society and opens the eyes of students of what HIV is and how are the lives of its victims through two films. The symposium, which was held from July 24- August 4, was filled with different reactions as the director discussed different issues of HIV after the films. They also conducted counselling and testing for HIV at the Reproductive Health and Wellness Center and gave out brochures to guide and help other people overcome the stigma of disgrace. The caravan had its launching on July 12, 2012 at HCDC with its film composed of Cebu and Davao actors and actresses.

Students from San Pedro College, davao doctors College, Brokenshire College, holy Cross of davao College, Philippine womens College, University of Immaculate Concepcion, ateneo de davao University, University of Mindanao and University of the Philippines Mindanao participated in the leadership Camp. There were about 100 participants coming from the nine schools. Ayala Foundation Inc. and Ayala LeadCom, in coordination with the participating schools, organized the leadership camp. The Leadership Camp is a move to help spread the LEADERSHIP VIRUS, according to the organizing committee. The LeadCom program is inspired by the annual Ayala Young Leaders Congress (AYLC), of Ayala Group of Companies that is developed to provide opportunities for more young leaders to grow and develop their leadership.
The keynote speaker during the first day was Honorable Mayor Sarah Duterte. No one is born a leader but when you are called, step up and take charge, she emphasized in her speech. Other speakers during the Leadership Camp included Ms. Angela Ferrer from Abreeza, Ms. Betty Cabazares from Kinaiyahan Foundation, Mr. Derf Maiz from GMA News and Simon C. Mossesgeld from AYLC congress. The three-day event was filled with talks and activities that helped the participants develop their leadership skills. The participants were grouped into ten different groups. Most of the activities were done by group like Trust Fall, Nuclear Fence, etc. The last activity, however, was done by the whole batch to promote unity and other leadership values among the Davao LeadCom participants. The 13 participants from San Pedro College were Erika Rollo, Lhesly Pesante, Vince Carreon, Gea Sedayao, Clydine Panayaman, Katrina Pieldad, Lorenzo Tuason, Demi Bernabe, Marionne Rafael, Jude Estaniel, Mark Capillanes, Carlito Mata, Jr. and Karolyn Manalo, who are active members of

hey thought it will be just another leadership Training Seminar jam-packed with activities that demand for their physical skills and sharp minds. But it went beyond their expectations: it was a life changing event.
The 15 annual Leadership Training Seminar held at Camp Alano, Toril last August 26-28, 2012 was different among the previous LTS facilitated by the Saligan Supreme Student Council and the Office of the Student Affairs. For the first time, Saligan, together with the Office of the Student Affairs has collaborated with the Ayala LeadCom in making this years LTS possible. The Ayala LeadCom invited 13 student leaders from San Pedro College, together with other student leaders from different Universities and Colleges in Davao City to participate in the Leadership Training Seminar they had organized. These 13 SPCians were then tasked to spearhead this years LTS, of course with the support of Saligan, the Office of the Student Affairs, and the Ayala LeadCom. Out of the 100 expected participants, 82 SPCians came and accepted the challenge. The very first San Pedro College-Ayala LeadCom Leadership Training Seminar, with the theme, I start Positive Change: iServe, iPreach, iCare, had organized activities that are more on discovering oneself, leadership, and forming a unified community. Different speakers delivered inspirational talks that stressed the values of serving, preaching and caring for others. Mrs. Vivencia Abogado, Mr. Reynaldo Garote, Mr. Remark Mortalla and Ms. Olivine Cocjin were the facilitators from San Pedro College who attended the Facilitators Training and Workshop.
The Leadership Camp created links between the colleges and universities of Davao. A Davao leadership community (LEADCOM) was then created. The LeadCom Davao Batch 1 or LeadCom Agila is now advocating different cause-

PACSA continues to push through and excel despite uncertain and difficult times. We are able to accomplish these initiatives because we care deeply for students. Our commitment to their welfare, to help provide the best PACSA Mindanao experience possible. Students are our guiding star, our one true HOPE, stated Mr. Ernie Benzo, chairman of the PACSA search committee. or several years, San Pedro College has been a part of the organizations journalistic activities, and once again, student journalists let their voice reign supreme on this years student journalist convention. The College Editors Guild of the Philippines has been considered the oldest and largest existing intercollegiate alliance of tertiary student publications in the country. It promotes campus press freedom and is steadfast in advancing and protecting the right of every student to seek, receive and impart information through any medium without any interference. The organization promotes both patriotism and democracy through their seminars, activities and events. It aims to establish publications in all schools, reopen all closed student publications, end all forms of campus press repression and scrap the Campus Journalism Act of 1991 or the RA 7079. For over 80-years, CEGP has been active in the political scene, condemning political excesses and supporting the welfare of marginalized sectors of society. For decades, the organization has undergone many trials and obstacles, testing its stability. Many tried to take it down, but the organizations drive to fight for truth and justice towards Filipino welfare made it flexible to the dynamic and barrier-filled environment. Presently, CEGP has over 750 student publications as members from more than 500 schools in 68 provinces and cities nationwide. CEGP promotes political and social awareness by conducting seminars, journalism trainings, conferences and conventions nationwide. One of its national conventions is the National Student Press Convention. For this year, CEGP conducted the 72nd NSPC themed: 80 Taon ng Matalas na Pagsusuri at Makabaang Peryodismo. Kabataan, Manindigan Para sa Kalikasan at Malayang Pamamahayag. It was held last May
14 to 18, 2012 at Palawan State University, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. Over a hundred student journalists from different college publications nationwide participated in the annual national convention. As an active member of CEGP, The Rock, the official student publication of San Pedro College sent two representatives for the event namely Ray Lester Bajado and Jessalyn Bautista. During the five-day activity, student journalists were exposed to different social awareness forums, sociopolitical discussions and basic, intermediate and advanced journalism training workshops. Also, CEGP honored outstanding publications in this convention thru its annual awarding. One is the 13th Ernesto Rodriguez Award (also known as Gawad
ERJ) which is divided into two categories; major and minor. The major category includes tabloid, broadsheet and magazine while the minor category includes literary folio, alternative forma and website. Another is the 10th Benjaline Hernandez Award (also known as Gawad Beng) which awards the school publication with an outstanding feature on human rights. Youth and journalism are two different nouns that play an important role in a nations present and future. Honing the youngs journalistic awareness and skills can definitely make a difference in the fight for truth and justice. And CEGP serves as an important medium in promoting student journalism and social awareness.

According to some members of the faculty who preferred not to be named, the decreased passing rate can be attributed to the takers attitude during their review. They said that some examinees were not serious enough and would rather indulge in social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram accounting to lack of attention. Professors pointed out that some relying too much on E-books, were not jotting down notes and uncooperative. The lack of preparation time was also cited. In addition to this, the dramatic decline in the schools performance is also attributed to the retakers of the exam. The retakers who were not anymore students of this institution cant be contacted or the department finds it difficult to contact the retakers in the purpose of reaching out to them and do some counseling to guide them in their predicament. Retakers in addition would opt to review in review centers outside SPC or conduct self- review or peer review with co- retakers.

It has been a practice as well by the Pharmacy Department to incorporate board examination questions in their examinations especially for the 4th year students and results in these examinations will be a contributing factor if they could walk the aisle with their togas on. Reviewers from known review centers are projected to be hired by the department for even more efficient girding.
Graph 4 depicts oscillating percentages from Physical Therapy board exams. Meanwhile there has been a dramatic decline in the Pharmacy board exam results, as shown in Graph 5. Since 2009, an all- time high percentage of 100 drops to 50 % during the July 2012 Pharmacy board exam.

eptember 3, 2012 marked the most significant event for the fourth year Medical Laboratory Science students as they finally received the fruit of their labor, their precious pins. For almost three and a half years, they were yearning for this event to come and now they had finally achieved what they were longing for. Out of more than 400 students who enrolled last 2009, only 211 hopefuls got the chance to get themselves pinned. The 27th Pinning Ceremony was held at CAP Auditorium, Anda St., Davao City. During the event, they were constantly reminded of the importance of taking the licensure examination after graduating college. They were also told to savor every second of their clinical duty inside the laboratory to gain more knowledge and equip themselves with the appropriate skills warranted from them.

With the high passing rates San Pedro College Nursing Department have garnered in the Nursing Licensure Examination, its no longer a surprise that the school becomes frequently part of the top performing schools in the Philippines. Although the school didnt make it to the top in the most recent licensure examination, the results are doubtlessly promising with the 95.65% passing rate for the first takers and 66.67% for the retakers, giving SPC nursing department the overall passing rate of 81.16%. Looking at the fluctuating exam results history of San Pedro College in the past four years, it is safe to say that many factors might be affecting the students for having good results in the licensure examination. One of our students who took the exam suggested that we continue our encouragement by meeting and counseling the students [who will be taking the exam] personally. She felt that the next batch of takers is pressured despite the good results of the latest Nursing Licensure Exam. So yes, we can probably find a schedule and meet with them and I hope they respond to it. The school has always wanted to reach out to those who didnt make it, we can help them any way we can and boost their selfesteem. But then, another concern is that we have difficulty in identifying and reaching out for the retakers because we no longer have a hold to them since their documents have already been submitted to the PRC Dean Jeanie Bibera said. Theres really no problem with the first takers since they got 95%. It was probably the retakers that pulled the results down a little. So I guess we have to reach out to the retakers Prof. Leah Zamora added. Over the years, the repeaters passing rates are relatively low compared to the first takers passing rates, which can pull down the overall result of an institution. Last time one of the board members Hon. Marco Antonio Sto. Tomas, mentioned that they are trying to find a way [to reach

They were also advised to take review classes in Manor R e v i e w Center in Manila aside from the review classes they took in Davao. The last batch of graduates who took the simulated b o a r d exam were those who graduated last March 2011 who were then under Dean Ma. Leilani A. Betonios term. Under her implementing strategy, the students who failed the simulated board exam were given the freedom to take the licensure exam scheduled last January 2012. As practiced they were also advised to take supplemental review classes in Manila. The licensure exam results turned out to be above the National Passing Rate (59.9%) with 26 out of 37 takers passing the exam garnering a 70.27% overall passing rate. San Pedro College got a passing rate of 100% for the first takers and an overall passing rate of 71.43% in the March 2012 Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers. The Education Division of the Arts and Sciences Department has been performing well regardless of the decreased number of students. I am happy that the Education Program of San Pedro College has been able to get 100% passing rates in the Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers despite the few number of graduates. SPC is really making a name in offering Bachelor of Science in Education. We try our best to maintain the good passing rates that we have for this is also a way to advertise that our school has such program. The September MTLE takers nailed the exam by placing San Pedro College as top four performing school of Medical Technology in the Philippines garnering 90.91 percent overall passing rate with 80 out of 88 takers passing the exam. The department was also applauded by the institution for having 100 percent passing rate for the first takers. They [first takers] were the second batch of examinees who graduated under the new Medical Technology curriculum in pursuant to the memorandum order of CHEd last 2006 adapting the Medical Laboratory Science education curriculum. In the course of four years, there has been a dramatic increase in the performance of MTLE takers. I am very proud to be part of the BMLS faculty. The efforts made by the teachers and reviewees were really paid off. We have been aiming for excellence and continuously pursuing it. This achievement we obtained can be attributed to our strict compliance
Graph 1 shows a drastic increase in the MTLE results since 2009. Graced by Fr. Jude Guesler Roquero, O.P., the LRCs brand new Learning Commons adds to new attraction in the SPC library.
Saligan through Mr. Hubert Alegro with the LRC staff deliberated on the 6% library fee from the tuition fee increase. It was elaborated that the new baggage counter, subscription to new databases, purchasing of books, and the construction of Learning Commons were all allocated from the fee increase. As a response to the changing behaviors of students, their study habits, and the means of teaching them, the Learning Commons aims to give students a dynamic learning space combined with services from the LRC and access to the colleges information resources which would also provide an atmosphere that meets the students needs.
I have come across such libraries abroad through the internet. The idea hit me since I noticed that the generation of today are hooked with gadgets such as laptop and iPad in doing research while some opt to eat while studying and prefer a comfortable atmosphere conducive for learning, says Ms. Lariosa. Political Carnival
t is undeniable that Philippine politics resemble a carnival, a riotous flimflam of the illogical and the ridiculous. and why not? we have elected movie stars, one of whom was recently embroiled in a plagiarism scandal. We have voted for family dynasties without thinking that, to paraphrase author Jessica Zafra, candidates should be elected based on what they can do and what they have done, and not what their antecedents have achieved. During elections, candidates disseminate flyers and posters bearing their qualifications as if being a Bar topnotcher or a summa cum laude assures good leadership. Post-elections they still barrage us with their faults: electoral sabotage, bribery, incomplete SALNs, corruption, and so on. Those are nothing new. Recently, attention was focused to another politicians habit: the sin of using our taxes for free publicity. One might as well ask: when does public service end and free publicity begins? Welcome to the world of epal politicians. According to a Philippine Daily Inquirer article, epal is slang for mapapel, which is a Filipino term for attention grabbers, scene stealers, or people who crave a role (papel) in affairs that are not necessarily theirs to handle or decide. Anywhere you look, you see some government projects funded by our taxes with a politicians name, face, or both. There are gyms, schools, and government vehicles bearing the name of politicians as if they are altruistic philanthropists who love to donate. Their faces and names are plastered on every project they do as if reminding us that they are doing their jobs. Nice attempt at reassurance. What possessed these politicians to become epals? Are they that image-conscious to brand every project as theirs even without contributing a single cent to its inception? The initiative may be theirs but they dont own it. Do they suffer from paranoia believing that people might not vote for them unless their names are not brandished everywhere? Granted that we want our politicians to do their jobs and we should instead be proud that these epal politicos have at least the initiative to do something concrete. But then, to do something concrete is expected of them in the first place. We elected them to lead us, to represent us, to make our country a better place. We did not elect them to act like celebrities whose image spells everything. We want them to act like responsible intelligent leaders and not as stupid rejects from a toothpaste commercial flashing their dentists work for the world to see. We want them to construct bridges, build schools, and provide betterment programs out of their own venerable wills and not because they want to keep their names abloom. Its not the names that we want to see but the proper leadership. We can feel youre doing something even without the names and faces. Chances are we will instead be alienated from you especially if youre not photogenic. Cut us some slack. Were not morons or zombies. Thankfully, measures have been taken to clear this ignominy. Lately, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago authored Senate Bill No.1967, also known as An Act Prohibiting Public Officers from Claiming Credit through Signage Announcing a Public Works Project. Hopefully, this bill will encourage politicians to clean up their act and start behaving like leaders and not as celebrities. This bill is but one of the many avenues in making our murky political arena less like a carnival. But if these politicians insist of bludgeoning us with their faces and names, let them. After all, their fates lie in our hands.

hey know theyre wrong but do not know how wrong theyre wrong.
When I finally moved out of that central haven for the modern Magdalenas (I would not name it for whatever sake, because I know that in certain ways you know this place when you happen to have your acquaintance party, pinning, or capping inside), I glanced from the cabs window and saw those girls already made their flirtatious negotiations with the men in black. My mind actually had a preformed disgust on their ghoulish business but something in their eyes was actually crumpling my heart. Its like behind the mascara and thick make-up is a separate entity, trying to break-out from the world they are in. But too fast to flicker away that I cannot ultimately identify what that was. This had left me pondering. I braved my soul to return to the place to quench my growing attraction for such truth, if there was, I was trying to extract. It was slightly raining when I arrived and quite surprised that the show had still go on. I met Lena, a 34-year old expert of the fishing business. She considered her marriage as a failure and started fishing when his husband left her. Shes been 5 years in the business, and still counting, she said. Every day we always deal on how to fight - or at least subside - the feelings of loneliness and at the same time, how to make our folks proud, they who are making ways to provide us good education in Davao. We have to deal with the two extremes. Aside from that, we also need to pay attention about our expenses, friends, food etcetera, etcetera. Tough, right? But what keeps us going? We go forward because we are aiming for something not just for us, but for our families as well. Living far away from home prepares us to the other challenges that will come as we reach nearer to our goals. After all the hard work in the city, going back with a sense of fulfilment is further enriched when we see the smiles of our parents and family members, knowing that letting you study in Davao was more than worth itbecause you made your entire family proud of you. Maybe not all of us are the best, the top performing students, but the fact that we have survived the ordeal on our own feet gives our parents the pride that they have raised a very strong and smart child. :) Self-criticism is a time of reflecting and pondering about our thoughts and actions that we have done. Self-criticism is crucial in knowing your strengths and weaknesses as a person. The process is painful, because knowing our own flaws shakes our perception of invincibility and power. But remember, selfcriticism is and will not be synonymous to degrading yourself, but rather, an opportunity for self-inquiry. Self-inquiry will lead you to the ways of self-improvement. of years from 10 to 12 they said would produce more competitive and skilled workers that would aid our labor force. The matters I want to point out are that a.) longer schooling years will not assure us of better quality of education, b.) it might cause loss of interest in the part of the students and c.) this is not the aspect we should focus on now because what I think on where the administration should concentrate its attention is on the backlogs and shortages. Public schools are in need of textbooks, of desks and chairs and of teachers. Facilities in state universities and colleges as well in public elementary and high schools are not adequate and conducive. Should they be blind of these? Launching K-12 will add on to the already progressing deterioration of our offered education at least for this moment. Basically, the idea of going together with international number of years is good but hey, we have a lot more problems to solve that pose more vitality. Aside from the negative feedbacks of the observing public, the Administration still has the right to be recognized and appreciated. They are working or so I think for our welfare. They gave us commendable achievements. But they should stop from criticizing the previous administration. What happened before is already a part of history so I say let bygones be bygones. What is essential is here and now.

which always poolsprotests across the map. Adding to the same burden is granting them privileges of the Philippines regulations against foreign intrusion to pave way for the transformation of the countrys national security. With these privileges, the Aquino regime is granting them the luxury and pleasure of blindly letting the women and their children be molested in exchange of military transformation. The administration is blindly wagging its tail to its master just to suffice a concern which the government cant solve on its own. What a shame! This affair between the two countries is basically triggering yet another threat to the countrys sovereignty. This calls for the Aquino regime to trash this treaty to protect the Filipino people from Americas personal interest. If the US genuinely supports its ally, they should have consensually come and have the initiative of extending out its arms to help the country against China in the first place. If this dysfunction continues, impotency endures thus no genuine development would be born. The country is still in shackles in this modernworld colonization. Needless to say, the Aquino government should start to man up and stand on its own feet. This feat that his administration is facing is just a prelude of what is yet to come for the remaining four years of his term.

Conditional Cash Transfer, tickling your ears? No? This is the program known as the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino in which cash is given out amounting to 1,400 Php for a duration of five years to marganilized citizens for them to have a better living and elevate their economic status. This is a good move, ideally. But is CCT, a sustainable program? The government cannot assure with a hundred percent certainty that the beneficiaries of this program will not get unattended in the coming years. What if budget deficiencies arise? Somehow, I think this is a band aid solution. Giving out of cash is not a bad idea but we cannot say that the beneficiaries will work their guts off maximizing what they have received. Let us not be in denial that there are many of us who would rather enjoy now and pay for it later. Higher-ups insist that this is for developing self-reliance but are we really cultivating self-reliance or are we allowing a temporary dependence? Do the math. I did in fact, very well. It is not questionable that the budget for the Department of Education has increased from P175 billion in 2010, P207.27 billion for 2011, P292.7 billion for 2012 to the proposed P238.8 billion for 2013. Plausible, it is. But beyond this, what I am concerned of is not about the budget allocated for the DepEd but for what this big money is intended for. President Aquino mentioned that this increase is partly because of the launching of K-12. Yes, I know youre aware of this. Lengthening the number
The Philippine government became more assertive to claim what China so called to be theirs. The tension between these two countries escalated when China sent their troops to inhabit one of the islands that compose Spratlys. The Philippines on the other hand didnt make any drastic move as it still upholds diplomacy, considering it a vital solution to the problem. This made way for the Aquino government to seek the help of the foreign community to address this problem by justifying the provisions stipulated in UNCLOS. The Philippines got no clear feedback from the international village which is tantamount to saying you need to stand on your own. This neutrality from the side of the foreign community just boosted the assurance of the Chinese government in sending additional troops and ships patrolling the Spratlys and recently they maneuvered their way to Scarborough Shoal. The Aquino government in its desperation to safeguard the nations sovereignty clung for help to its one true love the US. The Philippines used the provisions of the 1991 Visiting Forces Agreement in seeking US military aid to protect the country in any untoward hostilities that this dispute might cause. This treaty between the Philippines and US encompasses the strengthening of the Armed Forces of the Philippines expertise to protect and preserve the country through upgrading military facilities and conducting Balikatan Exercises

experienced this state at some point. Every teenager, in any way, is hardheaded. We usually think that every thing we do is right. We get mad when other people will say something negative on our decisions. We ignore other persons advices and end up doing what we like to do. When there is a clear President, instead of finding a solution to alleviate the number of out-of-school youths, even made a move that will most likely change everything, but not for the better. Sending their kids to a school with a ten-year basic education cycle already is a great challenge for those minimum-wage earner Filipinos. After graduating in grade 6, not everyone from the batch gets the chance to proceed in high school. And PNoy made it even more impossible for Filipino students to ever get hold of their OWN diploma. Effective June this school year 2012-2013, the K+12 curriculum will be followed. This K to 12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education six years of primary education, four years of junior high school, and two years of senior high school (SHS). The implementation of this curriculum, the transition from the existing ten-year basic education to 12 years, gained mixed reactions from the affected citizens. But will this be of good help? For me, its a NO. We need to add two years to our basic education. Those who can afford pay up to fourteen years of schooling before university. Thus their children are getting into the best universities and the best jobs after graduation
mistake on the outcome, we then realize that what we have done was wrong. In our individual and personal views, we know things. But, the truth is, we THINK we know things. In reality, we surely dont. We tend to rush things. We think we are already grown-ups. We think that we know what we are doing. We think that we do not need any guidance from our parents anymore. We think we can handle ourselves. One good example is in the classroom, can you hear your classmates plan after he will ---- President Benigno S. Aquino III. Let me emphasize what he had said, those who can afford pay up to fourteen years of schooling before university, so what about those who can hardly send their children to school? What about those who cant afford to pay up to fourteen years of schooling before graduation? Are they no longer given the chance to go to school and acquire knowledge? The current administration wants to place the Philippine education system at par with international standards, following the Washington Accord and the Bologna Accord and to contribute to the development of a better educated society capable of pursuing productive employment, entrepreneurship, or higher education discipline. The administration blames the poor quality of basic education to the low achievement test scores of the Filipino students. But is the change in our countrys educational landscape the salvation of the low quality education provided by the DepEd?

A law is not a law if no one respects it.
Law VS Lore
According to the dearest friend of most people, Wikipedia, teenage pregnancy is pregnancy in a female under the age of 20, a quaint and clinical term of pregnancy consequenced from a wrong act and at the wrong time. It is a colossal result of ones misplaced carnal desire or curiosity that must have overwhelmed reasoning enough to lose care and throw away caution and morality into the wind. A teenager, twelve to eighteen years old, what is life supposed to be of a girl that age? School, family, friends, crushes? Yes. Pregnancy? A baby of her own? Hardly. Teenage years is still a time of selfidentity. A time when a girl is just learning how to be a woman, struggling to find an identity of her own, learning to stand up for a life of her own. Now here comes pregnancy, so new, so big, and so real. Whats for a girl to do but to abruptly stand up to carry it? Pregnancy is hard, teenage pregnancy is harder. Yet it still happens. According to the United Nation Population Fund Agency, the teenage pregnancy in the Philippines surged by seventy percent over the last decade, a very big figure for something that is clearly not liked by most people, if not all. What is the reason for getting pregnant in such age? To very few teenage girls, its because they wanted to; but most of the time, there is none, they have no reason at all. To them, it is an effect of an action, an action that was either for a blind pleasure of a moment or a forceful pursuit of a blind mans wicked happiness. It is bleak, it is hard, but it is a gift. Experience is deemed to be our greatest teacher. This particular experience has a lot to teach. Fast and furious the learning may be, the lessons are deeply etched. Responsibility towards life and towards every decisions. Support, to those parents who are more focused on its wrongness rather than on to what their daughter is facing. The hardest lesson would be forgiveness7yu to the man, to the act, to herself, and to the growing fetus and to what it will bring once born.
babys cry and a girls sob reach your heart at the same time. Two cries that bring you emotions so apart that it hurts when theyre felt together, heart warming happiness and heart breaking sorrow. A cry proclaiming a new life, and a cry both detesting and loving the life that was born by her. Teenage pregnancy is like that.
eality shows us that there are many countries currently competing for the possession of the Spratlys, especially the prized Scarborough Shoal due to its mineral abundance. Countries such as Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia as well as Taiwan also desire to claim the islands, but the two most viable contenders, RP and China, hold their stand to attain a prized jewel that could turn the tides of each nations economy. Two races who used to be close friends for centuries have gone quarreling for the possession of the controversial Spratly Islands, situated a few degrees below the South China Sea, rich in mineral deposits such as natural gas, fossil fuels and deuterium. Needless to say, its Peoples Republic of China versus the Republic of the Philippines. The conflict of possession over the Spratlys which the Republic of the Philippines calls Kalayaan Group of Islands heated up due to the Republic of the Philippines-China sidelight scandals such as the Manila Hostage Crisis wherein many Chinese tourists were killed by a rampaging former police officer and the execution of three Filipino drug mules who after three months of suspension of death penalty were pursued upon and were punished. The basis of the Philippines for claiming the Spratlys is the UNCLOS (United Nations Commission of the Law of The Sea) which was forwarded to the United Nations during the Marcos Regime. This international law states that RPs territory should extend up to 12 nautical miles from the baseline or coastline, and an additional 200-nautical mile EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone). To make this law even more powerful on its effect, data shows that the Spratly Islands are situated less than 100 nautical miles from Palawan. China on the other hand hardens its neck, relying on the fact that the Spratlys is a part of the South China Sea and Chinese folklore talks about their possession of the islands.
We should not let someone steal from us while our eyes are still open. We should not be timid about this conflict. What is ours is ours. Take heart, everyone.
around the shoal, declaring that they are prepared for war. Chinese television channels and news centers spread false information such as Chinas dominion over the whole Phillipines. As a result, many Filipino journalists, celebrities, and bloggers reacted in newspapers, in the internet and in television shows, protesting on Chinas bullying and appealing for a fair argument rather than a bombing palooza. This is where the United States of America entered the scene, deploying submarines, aircraft carriers and battleships in the Spratlys in aid for RP which made China even more furious. In the present, much trivial issues overcast this territorial dispute. Filipino channels seldom report about this issue anymore, to think that this is a national interest. But come and think of it, is it really worth the fight?
Teenage pregnancy is wrong, but it is not a mistake, never to be regretted upon. Despite its impropriety, the child that comes out of it is a gift and a miracle. Avoid it at all expense, abhor it and the child not once its there.

Weighing the scales, it is quite obvious and determinable who should own the Spratlys, but does the law make any sense when it is not respected. On a legal basis, the Philippines has the upper hand with the UNCLOS backing us up, but in its nature, the UNCLOS is an international law, and international laws could be or could not be followed by other countries, in that sense, making it useless to use against Chinas defense. RP designated people to be inhabitants of the islands to prevent China from drilling for minerals and for other resources there. These heroes are given provisions and are being sustained for by the government. They are the reasons why there is no rapid and radical takeover of the Spratlys. But later in the passing weeks, China began to be hardheaded, ignored the UNCLOS and started drilling on the Scarborough Shoal. The Chinese government also harbored their battleships and military sea vessels

When I saw blood, I swallowed the guava leaves I was chewing, which was to be used to cover the wound, he narrates in his authorized biography, Dolphy: Hindi Ko Ito Narating Mag-isa. Decided on helping his parents, the skinny and asthmatic Dolphy worked as a shoeshine boy, helper at a garments factory, porter, and calesa driver while dreaming of joining the US Navy. His job as a peanut seller earned him a ticket to the vaudeville stage. Our star, 16 and still asthmatic, started his prestigious career as a mere chorus boy in a vaudeville revue, performing alongside the revered Fernando Poe Sr., UPs oblation model. For Pidol, performing was literally a matter of life and death. When there was an air-raid, we would interrupt the show and run for cover at the air-raid shelter sa orchestra, kasama ang audience. Kapag walang bombang bumagsak, tuloy uli ang show. Mr. Dolphy moved to the radio after the vaudeville era stopped. Here, he starred as Golay, whose distinct voice easily caught the interest of radio listeners. Back then, radio was todays equivalent of an iPhone. With a 1000-peso talent fee, Pidol made his official movie debut in 1952 in the Sampaguita film Sa Isang Sulyap mo Tita. As the trends of the past were, our Dolphy played lead roles in Komiks adaptations such as Mars Ravelos Silveria, Captain Barbell, and Kalabog en Bosyo. But none was more risky in Pidols career than when he pioneered the young television industry. I was practically jobless when I left Sampaguita. There was no contract. And I wasnt very interested
But the fact is, we cannot judge her. You may claim that she is not a victim of an unfortunate circumstance for she has the option to say no. But like Lena, we had frustrations in life and to some point we have misdirected our resolutions. Im not writing this to tolerate their mischievous commerce but let you evaluate your own stand. A long time ago a man said, He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her. Jesus, does not approve the actions of Magdalene but neither throws the stone at her. Are we one of the mob, so quick to condemn? Or do we look at them with eyes of the Compassionate Father? May you have the valour to choose the noble one. For all those who are still on the streets searching for answers may they be like Magdalene who inspite the hopelessness, fought to surrender herself to the true Savior. Let us pray for the souls trapped in those bodies for all we know, they know theyre wrong but do not know how wrong theyre wrong.

encountered just to have a single gulp from the fountain of youth. Deaths, temptations, and many other things challenge everyone who dares to explore and search for the fountain. Nevertheless, many still continued and are still determined to discover the legendary fountain. Did you realize the message of the whole movie? It simply implies that youth is that important. Can you remember the times when we do not have a truckload of assignments and tasks? Can you remember the times when our greatest problem was when our lollipop fell on the ground? Can you remember the times when people adored you of your cute baby charms? It is so good to be true. We cannot turn back time. We cannot foresee the future. The only thing that we can do is perfect the present. We should live life to the fullest. Think of it this way, many elder people would want to exchange anything just to go back to their youth, when their bodies are still able to play a certain sport, or watch a movie without glasses, or eat anything without restrictions. As for us, we still have all of these now. So why not enjoy it instead of rushing it? Death and old age are unstoppable. There will come a time that we will not be able to do the things that we can still do now. We only live once. Make every second count. We still have many things to learn, a lot of people to meet, many more memories to make. And there is no perfect timing to start these things but now. Take it or leave it. It is now or never. We are young.

process, we become stronger because we now know ourselves better. Self-criticism is better than projecting your flaws to others. In self-criticism, you get to know yourself more, work on your flaws and be more mindful on how to act better. In projection where you see your very own flaws in others - you are ignoring your weaknesses. When someone especially a loved one - points out you weakness, it can greatly shatter you. _________________________ Writing is a socially acceptable form of getting naked in public Paulo Coelho Just to add, it is also an art of giving both pain and pleasure to your neurons. You force yourself to write something that makes sense, impresses people and satisfies your so-called intellectual self. Write, read, delete and rewrite. Do the same thing until it has become banal. You curse yourself for your lack of English, your laziness or whatever characteristics you have. You end up feeling frustrated. Five hours later, some internal miracle from above suddenly controls your hands and brain. You type, type, type and type. Pause for a moment to check errors. Then type again until both hemispheres of your brain agreed that you have made something worth reading. You feel happy and a huge increase of self-esteem, which makes you giddy, happy and hungry. budget for the education, then maybe, the quality of education, even with the ten-year basic curriculum, would have been better. It is a fact that we are lacking school buildings, classrooms, armchairs and teachers, that three students share one outdated textbook , and that there already are three-shift classes in some public schools. Adding two more years in our basic curriculum just deteriorated the situation. Instead of allotting the budget for the additional two years, the President should have used this amount to build more school buildings and classrooms, hire more teachers, and provide one updated textbook per student (in every subject). Instead of doing more to help children stay in school, the Aquino administration made it even more impossible especially to those coming from poor families. And yes, we can predict that more children will soon drop out from school. Indeed, there is no bright future for the youth under the administration of Benigno S. Aquino III. And ever since he came to power, the educational crisis has only worsened. Can there still be hope? No one knows. But as long as PNoy is in power, there will never be an assurance.
in money, Dolphy recounted. Dolphys first project for ABS-CBN was Buhay Artista, a consistent top-rater until the network was shut down in 1972 when Martial Law was declared. Even up to the television era, iDolphy was proficient in his filmography, this time, putting up his own film company, RVQ Productions. The companys first box-office hit was Pacifica Falayfay, which starred Rodolfo as a flamboyant cross-dresser. RVQ moved his TV career to RPN 9 following the closure of ABS. The former was where the sitcom John En Marsha was born. The show starred Dolphy as the poor but principled John Puruntong. John en Marsha ran for a record 17 straight years. The master comedian proved that behind the perfection in comedic timing lived an actor whose sensibilities and sensitivities could easily elicit tears from the audience as well, - Direk Jose Javier Reyes. In a dramatic gay role in Markova: Comfort Gay, Dolphy did prove that life is unfair, that life is about seeing the positivity in things. This phenomenal portrayal earned him, with his three sons, Eric and Epi, the Prix de la Meilleure Interpretation acting award at the Brussels International Film Festival. Faced with a barrage of criticism was Pidols last film, Father Jejemon, a FAMAS best actor film, which was severely attacked by the Catholic Church when it portrayed a priest who with his best intentions failed in the eyes of CBCP by degrading the sacraments. Still, with enthusiasm, even with foreseen condemnation by the Catholic Church, Mr. Dolphy taped the film, often carrying with him his portable oxygen tank. John Puruntong, in real life, was as his children say, the best father but not the best partner. Dolphy happily supported his 18 children. The reason for such number of partners was the fact that man is, at his truest, attracted to many women. But he, will and shall stay awed by only one. Ang mga talagang minahal ko, mabibilang lang sa daliri ng mga kamay. Huwag na nating bilangin ang naka-fling at masisira ang abacus ng Intsik, a testimony from the one and only King of Comedy. To trace the history of Dolphys career is to create a map of what was Philippine entertainment through decades of the twentieth and the early twenty-first century. Dolphy is more than a National Artist appointed by a committee and annointed by a Palace. The man who made us laugh is a national treasure. And no simple decision of men or laws can make some as priceless, director Jose Javier Reyes points out.

ouve been really bearing the brunt from school or work, havent you? Kudos to you if your mutilated eyebags have been refreshed by hue of colors when you decided to ramp the streets of davao City last august for the 27th annual Kadayawan Festival. however, when you opted to lock the room and study for that comprehensive exam, or say do your decent job, heres a birds eye-view for you to spell a true Kadayawan experience.

They say that behind every great man is a woman. Aside from being eye candies, Dabawenyas have unfathomable prominence of more than what meets the eye. The Hiyas ng Kadayawan was originally a model search created to accredit the growing fashion industry of Davao. However, in 2007 it was refined to a competition among the young, indigenous ladies to which their substantial culture and history of the indigenous community they represent are on the clench of their knowledge. In 2011, an SPCian capture the title with its outstanding performance during the competition. She is in in the person of Princess Bai Rahima M. Usman, representing the Maranao tribe. Mirroring the smiles of the Dabawenyos are the actors, actresses and artists of the country visiting the city. Among these are the Pop Princess, Sarah Geronimo who amazed her fans at Abreeza Mall; the yummy Coco Martin who by his mere presence made the girls jumping, panting, and wanting; and others stars who participated in the caravan like Richard Gutierrez, Sarah Lahbati, Maja Salvador. Their presence contributes to the magnetic force of the celebration, drawing more and more crowd (di mahulugang karayom). In turn, the all-stars would say that they are the ones elatedly compelled to return by the delight and beauty of Davao and the people. This years theme, Ten Tribes, One Vibe is a quintessence of the true spirit of Kadayawan Festival. The 10 indigenous tribes living in Davao City are the Ata, Matigsalug, Ovu-Manuvo, Klata-Djangan, Tagabawa, Tausog, Maguindanao, Maranao, Kagan, and Sama. These natives are beautifully unique to each other and are of great pride to the city. Dabawenyos even with mounting diverse cultures have always been one in heart and spirit. The cosmic modernization did not untie our embrace on the legacy of our mores and ethnicity. We have profound respect to the richness of our ancestors rituals of thanksgiving, as these heirlooms made us privileged to relish the bounty we are experiencing.

Second, the prosecution team. Mind you, why did they let themselves be humiliated for a couple of times by presenting shallow evidences and committed false allegations against Corona even before the trial started? The public have expected a lot better from them. However, it was fortunate for them since in the end Corona was convicted and hailed guilty beyond reasonable doubt. During the verdict, we saw how corrupted our officials are salvaging the time to market their good reputation. Instead of sticking with the status quo, they started discussing about themselves and what they did for the people. They were supposed to state facts on why they chose to convict or acquit Corona. It was supposed to be a day of objectiveness and selflessness for the country. Unfortunately, only a few understood such principle. At the end of the day, kudos to the senate for finishing such legit process of impeachment. It wasnt easy yet theyve done it with dignity still. As for the public, did the politicians gain your trust? The question is, would we want to believe
someone who washes his hands clean while convicting another when in fact even he himself committed the same?
heard the saying, The one who gossips to you, gossips about you? this holds true in most cases. The lesson I want to share here is plain and simple: Keep your lips sealed and mind your own business. If you cant express your personal comments in front of the person youre gossiping about then you might as well just keep it to yourself and think twice before passing it around. For those who listen to gossip, try to open up your mind first and youll realize that its really ignorant to judge someone based only on what you heard about them; its unfair and your prejudgment will only mask the good attributes youre actually missing to see on that person. Just think of all the friendship and reputations ruined because of harmless gossip, and youll realize how much damage those rumors can actually cause. You might think youre just one person, and you promise to tell just one other person, but word gets around faster than a blink of an eye. If youre the object of the gossip, I just want to advice you that ignoring irrelevant gossip is the most feasible thing to do. If the gossip isnt true, then dont fuss in the first place, just accept the reality that people love to talk. I believe in an old saying that one shouldnt try to defend oneself against gossip; your enemies wont believe you anyway and your friends dont need to hear your defense. Though, you should also know when to get help when the gossip already goes out of hand. Nonetheless, if you have a fairly good concept of who you are, you wont let gossip get to you. In time, rumors that are left alone will die a natural death. Photo sources:

Gold &
Diamond
s I was watching The Buzz on TV, I realized how fast gossip sells. even I cant deny how exciting it gets when someone starts to share juicy stories about other people. you may feel a little guilty at times but what could a little gossip do, right? But imagine this, what if the tables were turned and you become the object of the gossip? Thats when you start to realize that its not so harmless anymore.
GOSSIP?
More precious than gold, much more valuable than diamondsthe Earth.
Gossips are baseless allegations that damage or even wreck another persons reputation. For example, one person said negative things about you and others may forever hold this assumption against you, even though its the furthest from the truth in reality. Originally, we are all very impressionable people for good reason but many abuse this ability to be molded and instead use it to serve their selfish purposes. Weak minds may choose to believe rather than do their own research or they might see the truth straight from their own eyes but are too scared to stand up for it. Gossip is plainly a verbal diarrhea that comes out of the mouth and shows that the person speaking them has no control over their narrow mind. Gossip has
also been frequently condemned in religious and ethical writings, according to the Book of Exodus in the Bible: Dont bear vain hearsay. One is not even supposed to listen to gossip: Dont give others the chance to bear vain hearsay (Exodus 23:1). The reason is clear to anyone who has ever been a victim of libelous gossip: a persons image -- where their social standing depends -- is damaged. This may sound a little clich, but we are all created in Gods image and we are to give each other the benefit of doubt and always assume the best about each and every one. Its just a matter of trusting in the goodness of other people and always thinking the best of them and simply just follow the golden rule; do unto others what you want others to do unto you. I think people love to gossip for the reason that we all want to cover up our own flaws, or to bring down someone who has an advantage over us, its like an I-will-destroy-you-because-I-cant-be-like-you kind of mentality. This might also be the reason why we love to talk about celebrities so much, we feel good when we hear that these popular, flawless, good-looking, close to perfect stars mess up once in a while, too. Always remember though, gossip is damaging not just for the object of the rumors, but for the person spreading them as well. What comes around goes around and in the course of time, gossipers eventually lose their credibility because most of the gossip they waste time and energy on are just that--rumors. They may even lose their friends trust. Have you ever

he richness of the Philippine soil is astonishing. Beneath such, there is something more precious that resides under the earth. we are blessed with rich deposits of minerals which feed the hungry mouths of miners while making the mining corporations richer everyday. With this beneath us, lets take a closer gaze into the earth, into the heart of Philippine mining an dthe issues that converge around it. Mining is an industry wherein they obtain minerals and other elements from the depths of the earth. This is being practiced long before we were colonized. Gold and silver along with other jewels have become the trading media before. Mining in the Philippines became prominent specifically in the mountainous districts of Sierra Madre in Luzon, Western Mindanao and Eastern Mindanao particularly Region XI. These were just among many other rich mineral site deposits for industrial use. Mining in the Philippines wasnt given much notice not until lately when a campaign was launched to stop mining in Palawan alongside with the consecutive instances of landslides in the Northern and Southern parts of the country. Since then sprung caravans to stop mining as it poses risks to the lives of the miners and the conservation of our forests. The landslide in Pantukan, Compostella Valley Province a year ago buried 23 people and 2 went missing. This led to a mass evacuation of people living near the tragedy site. Small- scale miners were forced to move given a small amount of subsidy from the local government . Sentiments were raised as orders were formed. Where will those people take shelter? Is it more important to leave and earn nothing than to stay and feed their families but risk their lives? The same thing happened with the miners in Palawan. Only they had a large- scale corporation driving them off the island to salvage our resources. Everything is best under moderation. Anything too much is destructive. Anything so minimal would be unfruitful. People, a minuscule existence in this vast earth, should play their role in maintaining balance for us to become more successful and to live in the best conditions but still being able to harness our needs from the surroundings. May all these tragedies serve as a reminder for us to reflect upon. Let us always remember that much more precious than diamonds and more precious than gold is the earth itself.

A part of my
eventeen, eighteen and nineteen are the ages of personal blooming and independence. The world awaits us and we are discovering that same world. all of us, foreign students, are in this journey to fulfill our dreams and become doctors. how many of us have had this dream since we were as young as we could remember?
Leaving our comfort zones (i.e. our homes, our families, and our friends) in the pursuit of achieving selfsatisfaction, success and happiness. Interestingly enough, we find ourselves in a new world - Philippines. At ages like this, we have critical decisions to make independently. Being away from our loved ones can be such a challenge. Adapting to a new environment can teach us things about ourselves and whats around us. Basically, given an opportunity to study abroad is a blessing because it equips us with lessons we could bear for a lifetime wherever we go. As for me, I am thankful being given this opportunity to study here in the Philippines because as I compare things back home lessons acquired here would not have been learned at home. These lessons cant be bought nor read in any books in the library- experience. Being away from home teaches us to trust ourselves more to emerge as stronger individuals. We trust every decision that we make are the best decisions for us and for our loved ones. When we were younger, our parents cared for us, gave us food, picked us and sent us to school. Well guess what? As young adults, we do all that on our own now. I guess its a part of the growing process afloat on a sea of knowledge. Adaptation is what Im working at now. Ive been here for four months. Im adapting well and lets just say that the level of adaptation is directly proportional to
time. I begin to compare and contrast the new surroundings with the environment and culture that Im familiar with. I learn why they do this and we, that. Im exposed to a new culture and thus the learning scope is widened even further. The differences between Malaysia (where Im from) and Philippines arouse my curiosity and thus questions began to emerge. Questions initiate the search for answers. What is the main cause of the economic differences of Malaysia and Philippines? What is the psychology behind corruption? How do we put an end to corruption? How do we ensure that all the street children and orphans get their right to be educated? All these form components of my time here in Davao city. A new environment provides a lot of momentum for positive changes as quoted by Sean Covey in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Most of us subjected to a new environment are motivated to make positive changes to continue in this journey of self-improvement. New surroundings serve as springboards of change that go hand in hand in achieving our goals. These are the reason why we came here. As a conclusion, studying here in the Philippines is such a great blessing because of all the new things that we learn everyday and the things that we add to our basket of experiences. The many wonderful memories that we would have experienced during our stay here will enkindle in our hearts forever, reminding us of all the interesting lessons and experiences here, not to mention being able to learn and speak another language. Oh and have I mentioned how nice and friendly Filipinos are?

Plastics make up the bulk of garbage collected from the canals in the Metro. In 2011 alone, it reached up to 17, 087 kilos. But this will finally come to an end.
Davao City Local Government Unit has finally enforced the ban to all plastic and polystyrene foams used as food and beverage containers last June 28, 2012. The ban is in accordance with the provisions of the Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009 or City Ordinance 0361 series of 2010 (section 7, article V) which only permits recyclable and biodegradable plastic bags and containers. Section 8 of Article V of the City Ordinance 0361 states that all stores, as well as ambulant vendors in Davao city shall sell or provide only the following check-out bags and containers to the customers: recycled or recyclable paper bags; biodegradable plastic bags; reusable bags, such as cloth bags; bags made of indigenous materials such as bamboo, buri, abaca, anahaw, and pineapple; and used corrugated boxes or cartons. Meanwhile, Section 10 of article V states that only recyclable, biodegradable or reusable containers are allowed to be used as food and beverage containers. The city government has sent out notices on the ban to the business establishments since June 8, 2012 and over 34, 000 establishments in the city were expected to comply with the ban. The Davao City Ecological Solid Waste Management Ordinance of 2009, written in compliance with Republic act 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Program, enumerates waste segregating procedures as well as penalties involved for non-compliance. The ban imposed a fine of 2000 to 5000 pesos and imprisonment of not less than one month but not more than six months on violators. At present, Davao City is the lone LGU across the Philippines that created a localized version of the Republic Act 9003. It was in 2009 that the city passed an ordinance that bans the use of non-biodegradable plastics and polystyrene containers that are utilized as food and beverage take-out containers. The implementing rules and regulations of the ban were set out in 2010 with a twoyear grace period that ended in June 27, 2012. Last June 28-30, 2012, City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) has deployed four teams to roam in malls, restaurants, and local plastic manufacturers to monitor whether these establishments complied with the total ban. CENRO has penalized 194 business establishments on the first three days of the implementation of the ban. The City Treasurers office has generated 58, 200 Pesos from the erring establishments. But a week after the implementation of the ban, different establishments, including malls, has used biodegradable plastic bags. Most malls have days that they would use paper bags: SM during Wednesdays and Abreeza during Fridays. Fast foods, including McDonalds and KFC have used paper bags for their take-out orders. Jollibee, on the other hand, has used laminated cartons as an alternative to Styrofoam food containers. Plastic ban is more of a health concern Plastic bags and polystyrene foams are by-products of crude oil, and if ingested, can be detrimental to humans health, said Fortunato de Castro, Jr., head for the Information education campaign unit of CENRO Davao. Just Imagine your food is served in Styrofoam container, he added. The official recommended the use of laminated cartons as food and beverage containers instead of plastic and polystyrene foams. what Oxobiodegradable plastics are? After the implementation of the
t has been a tradition for the Philippines (and the world, for that matter) to welcome another prosperous year with firecrackers. It has been much a part of the celebration that to go without these loud materials will be like having a dance party minus the music: dull and meaningless. fter the death of Jesse robredo, people are wondering who will be the next department of Interior and local government (dIlg) secretary. The results of an online voting survey as to who the people wants to be the next dIlg secretary conducted by aBS-CBNs anthony Taberna in his Punto por Punto segment of Umagang Kay ganda program showed that davao City Vice Mayor rody duterte got 44 percent of the votes. Duterte was followed by former Isabela Gov. Grace Padaca, with 22 percent; Transportation Secretary Mar Roxas, nine percent; Manila Mayor Fred Lim, seven percent; Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, six percent; Vice President Jojo Binay, five percent; Sen. Ping Lacson, four percent; Cavite Rep. Emilio Abaya, two percent; and Executive Secretary Jojo Ochoa, 1 percent. Davao City Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was favored by many people to be the next DILG secretary. Also, Duterte admitted that he was also offered the DILG secretary position by President Benigno Aquino III even before the late Robredo took the helm of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) post two years ago. Even during the time of former Presidents Fidel V. Ramos and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the DILG post has been offered to Duterte. Both the government and majority of the Filipino people want Duterte as DILG secretary.

Asia. He was famous in his fight against criminality. Although he is also branded as The Punisher, for reportedly tolerating extra-judicial killings, he is still well-loved by the residents of Davao because he has shown his genuine service to others. He is known to give free food services for the poor with his Libreng Lugaw during special events in Davao. He also supported many campaigns like the Anti-smoking campaign and implemented strict rules like the Fireworks Ban that eventually helped maintain peace and order within the city. After twenty years in politics, Dutertes political savvy only improved and has grown practically unmatched within the citys political elite. His legacy is to establish Davao City as a peaceful and crime-free city. Indeed, based on his track record and able leadership in Davao City, Duterte is a local official who would qualify best as the DILG secretary and who could probably continue the genuine service of Robredo to the Filipino people. Still, after getting the offer for the position for DILG secretary for more than three times, Duterte declined all offers. I dont want to accept any national post (because) I am not qualified, Duterte, said in a news report in Inquirer Mindanao. At status quo, Mar Roxas is declared as the new DILG secretary.

ban on the use of plastic wrappers and Styrofoam materials, local makers of plastic bags and wrappers, and Styrofoam boxes and containers have started producing Oxobiodegradable plastics. Oxobiodegradable plastic is a polyolefin plastic with added amounts of metal salts to speed up the natural degradation process in three to six months. These plastic bags become brittle when exposed to heat of about 80 degrees centigrade. Biodegradable plastic bags cost up to 130 pesos per pack of 100 which is much more costly than nonbiodegradable bags, which only cost about 80-90 per pack of the same quantity. This plastic ban indeed is an eco-friendly move. It may not be the solution to all the environmental problems but at least, 20% of the total garbage thrown at the sanitary landfills in Davao are trimmed down. Banning plastic bags may not be the salvation of the environment, but it can be a way to reduce the environmental impact of human activities. Plastic ban was implemented citywide, why not make it NATIONWIDE? Act now. Think BIG. Save Mother Earth.

during New Years, and you might just have a major culture shock. Davao boasts its stellar record of having zero, if not some, casualties during the celebrations of Christmas and New Years. This is brought to you by former Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who once upon a time (2001 to be exact) issued a decree to ban the use of firecrackers and other explosives during the New Years celebration. But despite the Citys silence in revelling on the advent of another prosperous year, it is still amazing to see how it manages to celebrate the holidays modestly, creatively, and needless to say, safely. This can be seen on the alternative ways it adapts in welcoming the year. The TOrOTOT OrCheSTra. Who says you cant get laud during New Years? Next thing I saw was a list of IDs. Required valid IDs. Surely, I am not 65 years old so I cant have my Senior Citizens ID. Im not a professional, and so no PRC. Im an inutil when it comes to driving, so no Drivers License. The only valid ID I have is of my beloved schools, San Pedro College ID, beautifully showcasing the new schools facade. With that in set, my mind has achieved inner peace. Fifteen minutes later, I fired youtube. Typed New Voters Registration and watched how the scorching heat and the impossible queue of teenagers threw
curses in the air, possibly hating how slow the process is. But my metanoia is not as weak as it seems. I am an SPCian and I have my political and social responsibility. I might as well suffer an eon under the sun if that would mean serving my country. The smell of sweat and the fear that a barrage of quizzes bring will never hinder my resolve. Nationalism has touched my heart. What touches yours?

espite the strengthening the implementation of President aquinos executive order imposing moratorium on the cutting of trees, the illegal loggers continue to rape the mountains in Mindanao, especially in davao region.
Last year, a total log ban in the country was imposed by President Aquino owing to the series of disasters such as landslides and flashfloods that hit the country and to the fact that about 80% of the Philippines forest cover is already gone. Amidst all of these the operations of illegal logging continue. Massive illegal and commercial logging operations in Cateel, Baganga, Davao Oriental Province, Compostela, Compostela Valley and Talaingod, Davao Del Norte are resulting to the denudation of critical mountains and forests. Just this year, officials had confiscated 16 million pesos worth of hot logs in Manila North Harbor which was said to have been shipped from Davao. In Kapalong, Davao del Norte, illegal-logging activities remained rampant as hot logs littered the stretch of the Liboganon River in Sitio Patil, Barangay Gupitan and also log-bolts and flitches floating in the said river in Barangay Florida. Some forests in Davao Oriental were also not spared by environment plunderers as log ponds and hot logs were found along the road of Barangays San Jose, Catihan and Boston town. The seizures of cut logs and the monitoring of the forests are continued to address the illegal logging activities in Davao city. But these confiscations only solve half of the problem. The government officials failed to stop the illegal loggers from cutting those forest products, those trees should have been still standing on forests. So why the executive order of the President is not well implemented despite the strong conviction of the President to save the forest reserves of the country? Why does the deterioration of the Philippine forests continue despite of the announcements of DENR about the successes in their campaign to reduce the number of illegal logging hot spots in the country? The unresolved problem about illegal logging all boils down in one thing, connivance between the DENR, the military and large-scale logging companies.
AFP is considered as protectors of big businesses in the country, and one of these are those big time logging syndicates in the country. In the last three to four decades, they have been co-conspirators in operations that diminish the countrys forest cover. They should be blamed for the rapacious plunder of our forest reserves. DENR and the AFP declare themselves as protectors of the environment when in truth they directly are responsible for the rapid denudation of Philippine forests. The flash floods in Manila and cumulative death of thousands of other Filipinos were caused by the denudation of the forests in Sierra Madre Mountains. If the illegal logging in Davao region continues, we may soon experience the same situation as Manila. Death of many will soon be a sight to all Davaoenos. You, as a student may say that you can do nothing to stop these illegal loggers from cutting trees, but a simple act of recycling your used paper and hand-outs is already of great help. The hope to protect and conserve the remaining forest frontiers of the country continues but the implementation depends on the higher authorities.

establishments would soon be extinct. Once you open the smoking room, naturally the smoke goes out. Whether you like it or not the smokes goes round and round inside the building, Duterte held.
The Anti-Smoking Task force, more than a fright tactic, upholds awareness about smoking consequences among the smokers, by supporting graphics and visuals in cigarette packs on effects of smoking to
health, thus pursuing the DOH Executive Order 13. Hon. Sara Duterte-Carpio already reaffirmed the local governments pledge for an indissoluble support to the Comprehensive Anti-Smoking Ordinance. For this the booklet, Your Guide to a Smoke-Free City (Lessons Learned from Davao City, Philippines) , written by Domilyn C. Villarreiz, RMT, MD, MCH, was first out in public last March 2012. As substantial at it can be, it encompasses the 10 Steps towards
a Smoke-free City, The Key Elements of a Smoke-free Campaign, and the Smoke-free Settings. The SEATCAs published booklet was supported by the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease to advocate healthy and vigorous life for Davaoeos and to sustain a liveable and impeccable smoke-free city. Davao City continues to be a model for other parts of the Philippines and other Asian countries. The implementation
of the decade-long smoke-free legislation has been notably accredited for its significant upshot on the behaviour of the smokers, and for the decline of smoke-related health cases. Through the committed advocates of this crusade, more and more Davaoeos are inspired to become extra-responsible citizens of the city.
Bubble tea, also known as Pearl milk tea, is a Taiwanese tea drink that originated from tea shops in Taichung, Taiwan in the 1980s. Milk tea, odd as it may seem, is not a combination to be messed with. It is a Gods gift to all mankind for BV days (perfect de-stressor if you failed that major quiz) and not-so-BV days (because it is just sooooo good!). This heavenly blend has a frothy finish. Foam forms when the teas are shaken to mix the tea with ice, thus creating bubbles. Chewy tapioca balls made this drink even more ethereal. Before, the only milk tea known to Filipinos was Chowkings Nai Cha milk tea. It was not until these tea shops bombarded Davao that the Davaoenos cant get enough of this drink.
Milk Tea shops have become an affordable alternative to pricey coffee shops. These shops offer great choices to meet individual tastes and preferences. They also provide cozy ambiance perfect for students who want to do their paperworks, study for their quizzes, meet up with their friends, or to those people who simply want

The lampoon section of The rock is a compilation of articles that attacks a certain individual, group or institution in a light, good- natured humor and satire way. The purpose of the publication of writing such is to present its character or behavior in an exaggerated or grotesque form. Through this, we could give an impression to our readers that there are other styles of writing that would give them an interest to read for them to explore and reflect a certain topic. Some of the brilliant Filipino lampoon writers like graciano lopez Jaena who wrote Fray Botod and Marcelo h. del Pilar who wrote dasalan at Tocsohan succeeded their goal in writing by attacking the abuses of the friars during the Spanish Colonization. with these, The rock Publication sees lampoon writing an effective way of conveying relevant issues in the Philippine society which affects the ordinary life of a SPCian. dISClaIMer: The views and opinions expressed on these articles do not represent the views and opinions of anyone other than the author or the views and opinions of the organizations with which the author may be affiliated.

Woo! Ang pinakamaamoy sa mga passenger types natin. Nakaka- knock out ang body odor!
Bonifacio: Aba, tingnan mo iyang is Yves. Babaero katulad ni Rizal. rizal: Kung maka-backbite ka Andres wagas, as if wala ako dito. At least di ako katulad mong brutal. Bonifacio: At least nagbuburn ako ng calories di gaya mo na nakaupo lang at nagsusulat. Boring! rizal: The pen is mightier than the sword. Bonifacio: But the sword is sharper and longer than the pen. Daniel at Katerina? N i n o y : Natural lamang kay Noynoy yun sapagkat siya ay lalaki. Di gaya ng i b a diyan na napapabalitang. rizal: Ano? Ninoy: At least may fashion sense. Points for creativity! Bonifacio: If I know, mahilig ka sa mga ganun. Parang gusto kong bawiin ang aking linya na Filipinos are worth dying for. Parang they are not worth it kasi eh. Pumupunta ka dun no? Bonifacio: Hindi.
he Olympics has begun once again. athletes, coaches, journalists, and kibitzers have flocked to london to watch people strain their muscles. There are roughly 26 sports and 39 disciplines competed upon. This has been going on for so many years that it cant be denied that many people are getting bored by watching the same sport all over again (except in swimming where the sight of the bodies make us alert). So, to give a little bit of service to humanity, I compiled a small list of sport modifications to keep us riveted throughout the Olympics.
TaBle BadMINTON. If there is table tennis, whats stopping the International Olympic Committee from creating table badminton? Imagine a little racket and a little shuttlecock. The same rules for nontable/floor badminton apply but only in a smaller space. They could also create table volleyball, table fencing, table equestrian, or even table 1000-m run.
Go!
UNderwaTer rhyThMIC gyMNaSTICS. Rhythmic gymnastics is one of the most beautiful games in the Olympics. Those young little athletes bending and jumping never fails to catch our breaths. So for a twist, why not put them underwater? It will become a test of flexibility, skill, grace, and oxygen control. So as not to commit murder, gymnasts are required to finish their routine within one minute. The most graceful or the most fish-like wins. PlaTFOrM dIVINg BaCK aNd FOrTh. This involves the diver diving the regular way then, with as much willpower and effort, dive back from the pool to the diving board. headBall. There are football and handball games in the Olympics, so why not add headball. This involves passing the ball using the head from one athlete to another. No usage of hands and feet.
NegaTIVe 100-M rUN. The goal of this game is to make the athletes run backwards. Barrel ThrOw. Like the shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw, this game aims to throw a heavy thing, in this case a barrel ( the same one used in weightlifting),as far as possible. 100-M hUrdle wITh Bar. The start of this game is played the usual hurdle way but the last obstacle is not a hurdle but a bar, the same one used in pole vault only that the runners should not use any pole to leap. They can only use their legs. Thats enough for now folks as I am politely interrupted by space constraints. Remember that the only constant thing in this world is change so, who knows, maybe years from now those events I enumerated above will be included in the Olympics!

genders were male, supporting the fact found out by DOH three years ago that the drivers of the epidemic are unfortunately males and their male sex partners. Every guy is potentially infected with HIV, stated Juan Roxas III, seeing as in the 17 cases reported in June of this year, eight of the cases were of homosexual orientation and transmission (or males who have exclusive relationships with other males), seven bisexual, and two heterosexual. Now you may ask, why should this be a cause of concern for us students? Probably due to the fact that the age group of the majority of the cases are in the range of 15-34, a range where the average college student can be found. Another alarming trend is that most of those infected with HIV are getting younger, and that a number of Filipino adolescents who are HIVpositive have increased drastically in the last four years. The Philippine National AIDS Council warns that up to 46,000 Filipinos could be diagnosed with HIV by 2015 unless the spread of the contagious disease is effectively checked. Peer pressure, the limited opportunities to learn about preventing HIV infection, and the lack of skills to communicate their health needs are said to be some of the reasons why the number of HIV cases among young people are increasing. Call it curiosity or experimentation, but one shouldnt meddle with something that they are not braced for the consequences that would come afterwards. As stated by Mr. Roxas to the youth of today, If you are young, and not ready for pain, delay your sexual debut. People who indulge in sexual activity should be financially, physically and emotionally ready and prepared. People who are responsible exercise their rights to sexual freedom. As residents of Davao City, would you dare to take the risk and be part of

in this situation are vulnerable to the stresses of arguments, misunderstandings, seeing someone not enough or seeing someone too much. Those who arent in relationships have to deal with the stress of unrequited love. :( Sad, right? Anyhow, relationships are huge stressors for college students.

he department of health was alarmed upon reporting that two Filipino children were confirmed to be positive from enterovirus. The dOh is suspecting that these children acquired the enterovirus type 71 (eV-71) which is the usual cause for hand, Foot and Mouth disease (hFMd). The same enterovirus almost killed 60 children in Cambodia which alarmed the officials to have further study to these children. However, the Research Institute for Tropical Health Medicine reported that the Enterovirus that affected the two Filipino children were unlikely to be the EV-71 since those children recovered immediately which does not usually happen if it was the real EV-71. Undersecretary Eric Tayag also supported these claims and added to continue to test those children for it can also be a mild case of HFMD. Because nag test na sila, hindi naming pwede i-dismiss na EV-71 kase alam naman namin na EV-71 associated with HFMD na mild. Hindi lahat ng EV-71 ay deadly, explained by Tayag to his interview with Cher Jimenez on TV5 Interaksyon. Nevertheless, the authorities claim that it might be new polio because of its potential outbreak. Right now, the DOH had done series of tests and surveillances to detect if any children or adult were infected with the same type of virus. Whether it may be the real EV71 or not, we students should protect

Need I say more?
Yes, the ever-familiar promissory note. These are the poor students (forgive the pun) who have to painstakingly compose a letter to the finance office just to take the exams on the scheduled date. Also take into account the miscellaneous fees that a student has to pay for, like, his/her project materials, books, allowance, and etc. This is by far, the biggest college stressor since no money means termination of education.

He said that he expected to be resigned for Knicks after the Big Apple Linsanity of the past season and honestly preferred New York, as being quoted in SI.com.
