Definition:

A seminar is a lecture or presentation delivered to an audience on a particular topic or set of topics that are educational in nature. It is usually held for groups of 10-50 individuals. A seminar is frequently held at a hotel meeting space or within an office conference room.

Example:
Jane organized 1/2 day breakfast seminars in 10 cities throughout the month of August as part of a product rollout. According to Meeting Professionals International, more than $122 billion is spent annually in the U.S. meetings industry (2006). This money is most commonly spent at resort hotels, city hotels, suburban hotels, conference centers, restaurants, country clubs, convention centers, and at nearly every unique venue imaginable.

Description:
Seminars are usually shorter events, lasting a couple hours, day or a whole day. They have single or multiple speakers, and keep all participants together in the same space. Seminar is, generally, a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to actively participate. This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research. Normally, participants must not be beginners in the field under discussion (at US and Canadian universities, seminar classes are generally reserved for upper-class students, although at UK and Australian universities seminars are often used for all years). The idea behind the seminar system is to familiarize students more extensively with the methodology of their chosen subject and also to allow them to interact with examples of the practical problems that always occur during research work. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can be conducted it is relatively informal, at least compared to the lecture system of academic instruction. The terms "seminar" and "workshop" are frequently used to describe the same thing--training lasting more than an hour or two. The Random House unabridged dictionary defines "workshop" as "a seminar, discussion group, or the like, that emphasizes exchange of ideas and the demonstration and application of techniques, skills, etc.: a theater workshop; opera workshop." "Seminar" is defined as Seminar: present information on a broad topic, such as "marketing," "sales," "theater," in contrast to a more narrow topic such as "e-mail marketing to doctors," "sales closings," "Elizabethan theater." And all of these topics could be furthered narrowed

Types of Seminars
Live Seminars Live seminars are presentations in various areas of practice with actual presenters following a published schedule. Live seminars provide opportunities for interaction with the faculty members considered experts in the subject area, and time for Q & A is generally built into the seminar schedule. Community Seminars It involves adults joined by some common ground, either literal or figurative. Community Seminars have occurred in businesses and retirement homes, as well as in schools. This type of dialogue is constructive for building collaborative understanding and to promote thinking processes. Often Community Seminars are associated with a school and include parents and other community members in formal Paideia dialogue. They serve to introduce community members in a minds on way to an important facet of the schools life, and they provide a means for discussing ideas and values that are essential to the development of the school community. Content-Area Seminars These are designed to be integrated into the learning life of the individual classroom in order to support student thinking about the curriculum in one or more subjects. Content-area seminars may occur at the beginning, middle, or end of a unit depending on the unit plans structure and sequence. They may occur in all subjects. Content seminars are designed specifically to complement didactic instruction and intellectual coaching by nurturing students conceptual understanding of the complex ideas and values that give meaning to the curriculum. Seminars are conducted in various stages. Based on the size and organizational aspects the seminars can be classified in to four types. viz. 1. Mini seminar 2. Major seminar 3. National seminar 4. International seminar Mini seminar: Its coverage and scope are small and simple. A small population is enough to hold this seminar. A discussion held over the topic taught or to be taught with the students is known as Group discussion. Such group discussions held in an organized way within a class room, it is called mini seminar. This mini seminar gives the students training in questioning skills, organizing the information and presentation skills of seminar. A mini seminar is felt necessary because it gives good experience to conduct a major seminar at Institutional level.

Major seminar: The seminar conducted at an institutional or departmental level for a specific topic or subject is known as Major seminar. Usually students and teachers are participating in this type of seminar. This major seminar can be organized at department level for every month. A specific topic or subject is selected for the theme of the seminar. National seminar: An association of any kind particularly with academic or professional interest or an organization (Government, Firm, etc.,) conducts the seminar at National level is called National seminar. The subject experts are invited to the seminar for discussion. The Secretary of the seminar prepares the schedule and functionaries for seminar. International seminar: Usually the seminar conducted by an international organization or agency is known as International seminar. Theme of this seminar has wider aspects. Globalization, Renovation, Atomic energy agreements, Policies implementation and modification etc., are examples for themes of International seminars.
